A strange DreamDaybreak blinks eyes slowly before the campfire and softly mumble some sentence, surprising herself to even not understand them. She begins to panic as they sound like some dark ritual rhyme. Opening her eye widely this time, she poses lying on the grass before the fuming lightless campfire she was suppose to nourish during her guards.

Breathing heavily, she was thinking to herself that it's better fall asleep during duties than performing some abyssal promises like Oren like to do. Seeing her mentor from the corner of her eyes, she share her thought about her possible origin.

"I know you said many bits of stories about my past but I just dream of me like a panthera kidnapp during some creepy stuff you deal with, pulling me in a dark hole, been grab by tendril of shadows. Then one step after, you open my ribcage while I‘m a dragonborn to pullout the dragon heart you tell me you bring back to the temple...then you offer me flower that are fading when I barely touch them...pfff and that only those I remember..."

She take her bowl of vegetable stew that were left on the cold campfire and take some bites as her usual night snack.

"I don’t know if you are playing with my head Oren, but your story about being a dryad before been transform in Thiefling begin to sound me odd as time pass by… I know you always tell me the truth … well you kept so much for you ... in fact, I don’t have any proof you never did... but, I feel so confortable in beast form now… again it’s just weird that I feel so good as a beast while thinking of putting my teeth on meat make my stomach torn inside out…do you think its just a bad dream that torn my head more than my stomac ?"

She raise her eye toward Oren to notice that he wasn’t paying attention to her at all.

"Crap … your meditating again… I wish to learn to talk to trees some day…"

She kick slowly Gallindan feets who was sleeping beside.

"Hey Gil … your turn … Oren need to continue his stuff. By the way, you can start a new fire cause it's time for the beast to return struggling with which nightmare to continue … So good morning to you ...and good night for me."

OOC

I can have fun with Daybreak ! I read about 5 first pages, if you think I'll do a good avatar behind her, let me know

Hmm, alright, I'll put in my 10 copper pennies in the ring. Though, I ain't gonna lie, my concepts tend to just be stuff a threw around. I have no confidence that I'll be accepted but can't blame a guy gal sword for trying.

Name: Ezra Goldeneye
Race: Human
Class: Rogue (Mastermind)
Backstory: Ezra came from a family of humble farmers of Oakencrest, she work and toiled the land. Life was always so simple yet she couldn't help but have a certain habit. She had a love for wandering, and no, it was not just a simple wanderlust, it was a need for exploration. A need to travel this world as it is.

And let's just say that habit of hers turned into a sort of vagrancy as when she started she realized she had absolutely no skills at all in the outside world. And she had a well spring of misfortune, she had lost her wagon by banditry, loss her backpack from a pack of wolves, and was almost sacrificed twice from two different cults. She was surprised their were even cults this close to Oakencrest, she was surprised their were bandits in Oakencrest. Either way, she immediately went penniless by the time she went to her first major city. The city she stumbled to was called Jeremiah's Crown City, founded by a fellow farmer that found a crown of all crowns, a crown that would make all rulers, even dragons bow before him, or so the legends go. Ezra really didn't have the time to go in-depth on the lore of the city as she had mainly focused on getting ends meat.

Her life was rough, she had to learn the ways of the street and had to become a common thief. However, unlike many Thieves, she was different, she had ideas, she had smarts. She was dedicated to survive and patient enough to gain wealth. It was by luck when she stumbled upon a secret. You see, this kingdom used to run by one king until that king was dethroned by their own spawn and a silent war began for the crown of all crowns. Many nobles and even the most influential merchants participated in this bloody game. In the end, only one single merchant was the one to survive. However, instead of using the crown, he decided then and there that their would be no more Kings or a Monarchy. He eliminated those who coveted the crown and hid it, where? No one knows but that merchant. After that, he formed a Guild that would rule Jeremiah's Crown City, they formed a democracy were only 20 of the cities most favorable would take their seats. Where does Ezra fit in all this, you ask. Well, she found out a secret of this city, that merchant that won the war was no merchant, but a master thief in the guise as a merchant. And the Guild and the twenty people on the council are all thieves in league with that merchant. Now where did she learn of this you may ask, her mentor that gave her a helping hand when she was at her lowest, the one that hid Jeremiah's Crown, the thief that claims himself a merchant. It was by luck they met, yet when they did, her mentor knew her desires were just like his once upon a time. He offered Ezra a deal, to follow her dream, to see this world as it is. And one day follow into his footsteps. With an offer like that, she couldn't refuse.

After years of being a part of the Guild, she became a wandering merchant. Selling her wares to see the sites and places, all the while contacting the Guild and forming connections. That is when she heard news of her hometown from the merchant's line, of how a dragon was attacking it. Hearing this, she was worried of the folks at her home, so she made haste. Yet, she was far, it would take her a long time to reach it. She can only hope they were still around with the farm intact.

Personality: Ezra is a kind young lady, her mind filled with that of a traveller that wants to see the world. She can be seen as naive and sort of reckless, however, this whole persona is a facade. She's actually more cold and calculating, and just doesn't understand emotions much, which felt alienating to her. Her reason for leaving stems from that feeling. The only person that understood her was her mentor. Yet, despite her disposition with her emotions, she still deeply cares for her family. Anybody that hurt them, will feel her retribution.

Biting the bullet because! I think I can also manage the pace more long-term.

Application
Name: Sam Kaustroot
Race: Halfling (Mark of Healing if allowed)
Class: Cleric 1 / Wizard 5
Concept: Sam was an acolyte and used her old name when she left the Temple of Yondalla in Pike's Grove. She wanted to pursue more esoteric magic anyway, and by then that stupid Fekish, the Incubus from Oakcrestmeddler was causing more and more controversy and political back-stabbing and such. It was heartbreaking, and none of the priests seemed to care for her opinions anymore, so Sam fled to <Chronurgist Mage School>.

Only a year later when she went back, Sam was horrified at how her beloved temple and home was desecrated by that black-haired, black-hearted, pipe-puffing man. Murder. Blasphemy. Dark rituals she didn't even dare repeat out loud. It took weeks of investigating that this man might not even be a man after all, and was causing the same trouble in a village called Oakcrest.

By the time Sam arrived, the Abbot had filled her in on what had transpired. Sensing that Fekish was simply one demonic agent of many, she purposed to seek out the heroes who slew the Incubus in hopes of making sure these Dark forces never set foot in these parts ever again.

RP Links:

I know it's a bit thin, but I wanted to just start with a seed and see if it's something you can work with! So please do send feedback my way if you're interested.

Application

Name: Kerwin Powell

Race: Human (maybe Variant)

Class: Wizard (Transmutation)

Background: Guild Artisan (Alchemists and Apothecaries)

Description / Personality: Kerwin was not a hero. Standing not much taller than five feet and as rotund as an autumn pumpkin, Kerwin could have been mistaken for a beardless dwarf. He hadn't the physique nor the mental tolerance for such nonsense. What he did have was a gods given talent for alchemy...sometimes. Just as often as not, his creations would have a different affect. This is how we learn but this is also small solace for those who are provided a faulty potion.

His spellcasting was far more sound than his magical brewing but it just didn't have the flair, the excitement. Besides, being a wizard always carried negative connotations along with it and those were bad for business. But an alchemist? That was what the people demanded. And they were willing to hand over their hard-earned coins for an alchemists services. Those same folk would just as soon run from a wizard.

So, Kerwin kept his alchemical recipes mixed into his book with his spells to keep up appearances. He didn't wear a big long pointy hat or carry around a long stick. He wasn't obsessesed with moons and stars and he certainly wasn't about to summon a demon. However, he wasn't above profiting off of them. When he heard that the town of Oakhurst was having issues with demons, devils and all things occult, he hitched his mule to his cart and headed off for the accursed village. Fear was a great motivator and people who were afraid wanted to be reassured. Who better than the alchemist with his magic potions to make the populace feel better about their odds of surviving the next demon assault than with one of Kerwin's magical brews.

Since there's a good amount of reading to do to catch up on the whole story, do you have a selection deadline in mind? Also how tied are you and your players to "Common Races preferred"? Is it like... 90% chance you won't select an application based on exotic race? 30%? You definitely wouldn't at all?

Wow, we have had a ton of interest, and I am pretty flattered! Especially those who are taking the time to go read through the game threads. There are certainly a lot more players, and a lot of good really ideas here than we will be able to accept into the game. We are planning on closing applications Monday, August 15th at Noon EST. You have until that point to read over the game threads, and make any updates/changes to your applications that you would like. At that point, mountainbound, zebedee, and I will read over everything and make a decision on the direction we want to go.

No specific date for selections just yet, but noted above the close date for applications.

Regarding race: I can't give you % on the numbers. If you are going for an exotic race, it needs to be absolutely critical, and organic to the character. Not just selected for a desired racial benefit.

Adelaide DarkdraftFrom the treeline with the others, Adelaide watched the spectacle as demons fell dead from the sky around Tribblefork. While her companions talked of future plans, she turned her attention to the present, and began cleaning demon blood from her blade before it corrupted the steel. Focused on her work, she is startled when Gallindan claps her on the shoulder to impart some wisdom.

It would be difficult to admit aloud that she finds his teachings inspiring, without sounding a little sarcastic, perhaps even hypocritical in her own eyes. She could indeed hear the birds singing, just as she could see the sky a little bit brighter, and the trees a healthier green. Yet she could also feel her pulse still racing from the fear and excitement of battle, enough that it fought to consume her attention. Adelaide knew she should not be giving into such base emotions, but it felt good to smite evil and drive it from this world. Were they not warriors, bound to combat evil however they found it?

”Thank you, master,” she replied as her breathing evened out and her heart rate slowed down to a resting pace. Finally satisfied with the blade, she slid it into its scabbard and turned to face Gallindan, ”I will… try.”

StarflierAs a player I am a big fan of high fantasy settings with all the themes and tropes that come along with it. Games that strike a good balance between seriousness and levity in RP are especially appealing to me, whether it’s through jokes to cut some tension, or simply some ‘everyday’ RP between characters and npcs that doesn’t have the fate of the world riding on it.

With the impression that she's short-tempered and a little headstrong, I see the possibility for a little friction between Adelaide and the oath she’s taken. I think she needs Gallindan’s tutelage more than she would ever admit, not just to remain faithful to her oath, but to her growth as a person.

If selected I would like to hear the current player's/dm's thoughts on where they think the character was headed, and any little ‘unwritten’ background or impressions they attributed to the character. I suppose this applies to both the rollplay and roleplay aspects of Adelaide, since there’s not much to go on besides ‘human paladin’ mechanically at this point in the current game.

Post #2 - Half-Elf Wizard dividing treasure for the group.
Post #3 - Rookie secret agent coming to grips with the situation.

Damn! Just saw this. In case I get time enough to get a good app in, what is the expected post rate? (I may have missed the info)

At best once or twice a week (when in combat). We have had times, like during Outplay, when it has been more like once a month. I expect with new players, there will be some added energy, and the posting will probably be closer to the weekly mark initially.

I think Adelaide is a great option for someone, because she IS such a blank slate. I think you've put your finger on the conflict behind the scenes with her. Up to now, she's felt a lot like an old school "henchman". She could be a lot more interesting than that.

Name: Remy Le Pew
Race: variant human (halfling)
Class: Bard (college of spirits) 6
Background:Haunted one
Description/personality/History:

The halfling was hit on his head during the initial assault causing him to lose consciousness. No hair grew on the scar above his left ear. Rudely awakened by a dretch gnawing of his left hand. Luckily the fiend was slapped onwards by one of its masters before it could chump his way further up the arm. Needless to say that the pain and the blood loss combined with the commotio cerebri and the Hell that was unleashed upon Tribblefork sent the boy into a delirium. It had to be a delirium. How else could he explain the swarm of villagers floating around him while he could clearly see their butchered corpses. There was Halen, the old gatekeeper. And there little Lise, the normally so lively toddler was clutching her teddybear and looking at him in silence while tears meandered down her translucent cheeks. Was that?

"Elsie?"

As his trusty mule hovered closer, the word escaped his lips before he could stop it. Remy cringed. He had to run, or hide but either choice meant death. Even as he rested his weary form, clutching the stump of his left arm, against the north wall of the Inn where he had spent a few nights entertaining the good folk of Tribblefork. Just then Pebbles, the innkeep ran by, several demons in his tow. It was clear they were hunting for sport because rotund as he was, Pebbles hadn’t ran in several decades. Soon after they vanished from sight, a gurgling cry rose up and just stopped. Running was not an option. Then he spotted a mound of corpses nearby. He was small enough to hide underneath and the stench would smother the smell of the blood dripping from his head and stump. It was the only chance he had, so Remy ran to the pile, got flat on his stomach and crawled backwards underneath the bodies, their fluids soaking his clothes, his left foot trapped in a loop of intestines. The Halfling gagged and struggled to keep his meal down. The spirits kept him company, assailing him with their cries for help and questions.
"Where is Sam?

This is all your fault.

I want my mommy."

The despair in that last cry finally broke Remy. He could not hold it back any longer. Spewing his partially digested meal out, the bard collapsed in his own vomit.

When he finally came by, the others were destroying the portal. As he crawled out from his hiding place, Remy was a changed Halfling. Gone was the merry entertainer, here stood a man, scarred by horrors, a bleakness in his eyes that have seen and still see too much. A man determined not to let the fiends get away with this ever again. As the chasmes returned to the village, Remy snuck out, aided by the helpful remarks of a few young rascals who seemed to know - have known their way around town.

Applications are now closed. Thank you everyone for your interest! There are a lot more great ideas and characters here than we will be able to accommodate. Over the next couple of days, we will go over everything and make a final decision on which characters to add.
