She, and yes you are correct! The theme of the character is purification, respect for the dead, and protecting the bodies of those gone from becoming undead.

There's definitely going to be some stuff in her backstory about people thinking she's a Necromancer and about stigma against people who work with the dead. Application coming this evening.

Read up on how the Japanese and Asians treated those who dealt with human flesh. That would make a good backstory.

You might also consider the Grave domain (which isn’t in the PHB, however), @DiceGoblin, which could also suit the character you have in mind well.

@Hitch: I have added some information about Sister Ignatia’s handmaidens (retainers) and myself as a player. I think that my application is now complete. Any comments and of course criticism are very welcome!

@Hitch. Great game idea would love to play but going to have to withdraw. My plate is getting pretty full and wouldn't be fair to you and others if I can't devote the time needed to this.

Yeah. Most of my responses about necromancy have been quick to assume. This was mostly in response to the later Death Cleric levels when they start doing fairly obvious necromancer things like Vampiric Touch and Animate Dead.

I just want everyone with necromantic powers to be warned at the gate about how NPCs will likely react to it.

You always have the luxury to cut off any levels that begin to disrupt your story, or cut the spells and/or abilities that are questionable. You can replace it with other classes (to complete the 20 level) that fit the style without having the benefits you don't want in your story.

Just the 2 cents of a Joe Schmoe.

Took a bit longer than I wanted but here it is! I might adjust a few things in her backstory. But for now it should be all good to go.

Application
right-aligned image

Name: Luna Aldercrest
Class: Cleric (Death Domain)
Background: Sage

Description: Luna is relatively tall, standing at around 5' 9" with a lean build that hides a surprising amount of strength. Her hair is pale blonde, nearly to the point of white, and long, usually being kept out of her face with intricate braids or a quick bun if she's in a rush. Her eyes are light blue in color. She prefers dressing in dark colors and always has a feather tucked into her hair somewhere. Despite her odd appearance, one trait stands out above all the others, a nasty burn scar mars the right side of her neck, jaw, and collarbone. She also appears to have the motif of a bird skull burned into the back of her right hand.

Luna is a person of extreme patience and understanding. Having spent much of her life dealing with the dead and their loved ones, she's seen it all. She doesn't let insults bother her, and most people don't actually mean them. She works extremely well under pressure and tends to be a grounding presence to those around her. Despite her ability to care for the needs of others, she tends to neglect her own needs, sometimes forgetting to eat or giving up sleep for the sake of others. She keeps her own troubles bottled up all while lending an ear and a helping hand to yours.

Backstory: Luna had always been a bit of a macabre child. But that's what happens when most of your village is wiped out by a plague. Including her parents and older brother. But it wasn't in the healers who came to fight the plague that the newly orphaned girl found solace. It was instead in those who came for the dead. Dressed in black, with feathers and bird skulls on their clothing. It was they who were responsible for the cleansing rituals and burying of the dead.

They were worshippers of the Raven Queen, the goddess of death itself. But not just of the death, but rather the very moment of death itself. She was said to protect and ferry the souls of the dead to whatever afterlife their was. Though nobody could say what. Luna still found comfort knowing that somebody was still watching over her family.

Luna stuck to the Raven Queen's followers like glue. So much so that they ended up taking the orphaned girl with them. She learned their teachings and spent much of her time studying death. The members of the Raven Queens church believed that had two jobs on this earth. To take care of the dying and ease them into death, and to take care of the bodies of those left behind. Cleanse their bodies so that they cannot become undead. While the goddess takes care of the souls.

It wasn't long before Luna was a fully trained Cleric of the Raven Queen. Though she still continues her studies in hopes to learn all she can about death. She participates in battles, both as a comfort to the dying, and to experience a bit of what the dying must go through. She spends much of her time in hospice, taking care of the sick and dying, comforting the families, and then taking care of the bodies afterwards, once again so the families don't have to worry about it. Those who need her services are grateful. Everyone else, not so much.

Death is scary, death is a bad thing, anybody who surrounds themselves by it is a freak. Luna frequently finds herself in unfavorable situations. Either being given the cold shoulder by an entire village, or even having stones and other things thrown at her. People need those who are willing to take care of the dead, but the hate them all the same. They're freaks, monsters, necromancers.

One day Luna was in a small, very close minded, village. A family had just lost a child and she was there to help. As she was taking the body to be buried, she was attacked. The local hedge wizard had rallied the folks against her, decided that she was a necromancer and needed to be punished for it. A Firebolt from the wizard left what would eventually become the burn scar on her neck. She was held down as they branded her a necromancer, burning the scar into her hand. They would have killed her, or much worse, if not for the family of the child. They bought her enough time to flee.

Once she was far enough away from the village, she allowed herself to stop running. She sat against a tree and began to heal herself. That's when she heard footsteps. She looked up and saw a woman dressed in black. She looked like another Raven Queen Cleric so she thought nothing of it. The woman took hold of her burned hand and suddenly there was no pain. Looking at her hand, Luna could see that the brand of a skull had become a bird skull, the mark of the Raven Queen. "The mark of a champion." The woman said. As Luna realized exactly who she was talking to, the Raven Queen disappeared. She needed a champion, and she had picked Luna.

Motivation: As the Raven Queen's champion, it is her job to fight the undead. It is only natural she be called to a place where undeath is rampant.
Role: Mortician, Therapist, and in battle Support.

I have published some expanded information and house rules in the game forum if you want to take a peek. I know some people have already seen it somehow.

I don't actually know if the private thread there is actually private. It doesn't have anything in it any more.

If you have a private thread up and it is labeled Private. You are good to go. I only see Information and mechanics.

Looks good, I like the settlement building and exploration rules.

@Hitch Can I use that building/resource requirement chart in the future? It is indeed a great resource.

Ok...I have a couple more questions.

1. How many trees can be cut down by a person/day?

2. Can we get an inventory of what all of the homesteaders are bringing. I'm more interested in livestock, wagons, carts, tools, food seed... Not their personal blankets or whatever. Trying to plan based on tools that can be used.

3. What role does the noble have? Will be provide resources, help build, or just make reports/requests to the king?

4. How many stones can a person load/day (using wagons, carts for transport)

5. How do we acquire odd items (Plows and Plow blades)?

Resource Gathering
With the intent of keeping resource gathering simple, each laborer can gather Assume one large tree or several small trees, and about the same general working quantity in stone.one load of a resource per day.

Homesteader Inventory
The carrier ship's hull storage is not excessively big, so there's limited space.

For basic survival, the NPCs are bringing food, Mostly canvas, cloth, iron, rope, ect.trade supplies, camping gear and some tool-type simple weapons.
For development, they have some basic crop seeds, Sheep, chickens, and two draft animals.a few animals, Expect at least one or more sets of these tools among them...
  • Herbalism kit
  • Weaver's tools
  • Smith's tools
  • Mason's tools
  • Leatherworker's tools
  • Carpenter's tools
  • Cook's utensils
an array of trade/labor tools and a few carts (which have been dismantled to make space).

The Noble
The noble's name is Lord Milates Durandan. His personal lore may later be expanded upon in-game, if it comes up, but all Player Characters would know that he is of venerable age and has an even temperament.

His mission is the report the developments and exploration of Ramia. Officially, he is in charge of this operation and is tasked with ensuring the people's safety and well-being. He will supervise developments and be your political touchstone with Anur for trade and other matters. His major capabilities are in the social and intellectual spheres.

Advanced Items
Civilized items can be gained by trade or by crafting them. Some items will be improbable to make outside of trade, but many of the basic adventuring gear items can feasibly be made in town. (I hold a high regard for the ingenuity and skill of simple folk. If they can get their hands on a plow-head, the villagers would be able to make a plow.*)
