Why Should You Join?

First off, why should you join this game?

I've been DMing Legacy of Fire since January 14th, 2014. I had to take a hiatus for the last year and a half because of a career change but I feel ready to return. Many of the other players that I have been playing with in the last ten years are still with me (they are awesome, incredible players) and will slowly be returning to the game. If you want a game that just won't quit, you are in the right place.

We won 'Hall of Fame DM 2018'.

Many winning 'Post of the Month' entrances originates from this game. Some great players who take their character seriously have shaped the world and made it their own.

You won't be disappointed with a Legacy of Fire.

Who Should Your Character Be?

Firstly, I need a kelish character. Kelish is not only a language in my game, it is also a culture based on classic Arabia in real life. So have the Middle East in mind when creating your character. You can be as imaginative or loose with this as you want, I enjoy some interpretation.

Secondly, I prefer (but it's not exclusive) a character that will guide the other PCs through the city of Katapesh. If not, then someone who at least comes from that city.

Thirdly, choose an image for your character. You will be using this image with every post so perhaps it will be easier to choose the picture first and then form your character around it to keep it in sync.

Once you have the first three out of the way, finally give me an overview of your character and follow the Backstory and Application Information format shown below. Class, race, background, appearance, and personality. Have fun. Be creative. My main objective for my players is to have a pleasant experience and explore what they can do in my world.

I am looking for one adventurer to help the PCs navigate the complexity and danger of the nation's capital, Katapesh. They can either come from here or have some great experience with ins-and-outs of this gigantic city.

Current Cast of Characters

Drusilla and Grak'ark were hired by Lady Almah long ago. Both are drifters of a sort and are truly their own masters. They are what Grak would call a 'fatara' or family. Fandrik was a slave of the Carrion Tribe and freed by these two Hires. Pontiac was later hired by Lady Almah to identify an item the PCs found in the last adventure.

"Honest" Hasim THE BALLAD OF HONEST HASIM   Luck? Luck appears and disappears on the flip of a coin tossed by Abadars hand, or at least that's how Hasim has come to see it. On the day he was born, Hasim Sr and his mother (who were well regarded in the highly religious, Abadar-centric community) claimed that he had been marked for greatness by Abadar himself. The Clergy remained neutral on these claims, but many people took their silence as confirmation and gave the family gifts to curry favour with their God. The young Hasim did have a remarkably glib tongue as well as an eye for deals. His parents had him sign on as a cabin boy with a trading ship as soon as he was old enough, their outward reasoning being was that they wanted him to learn the Merchants trade from as many places as possible, but really it was so that all the attention/offerings would go to them!   All went well for the first couple of seasons, but then the ship was taken by pirates. Those crew who lived (including Hasim, who cowered in the hold until everything was over) were sold into slavery. Due to his small and scrawny frame at the time, Hasim was bought up by a crew a sewerjacks for a pittance. The squalid conditions he was forced to work and live in over the next few years would affect his physical and mental well being for the rest of his life.   There were some benefits of these awful days. His upbringing had given him an eye for what other people might give worth to, which occasionally included the bits of crap floating around in sewers, which enabled him to make a decent side-trade as a Someone who scavenges in the sewers, a sewer-hunter.Tosher. His dedication to the pursuit of Trade, even in such dire circumstances, was the impetus that caused Hasim to formally declare his service to Abadar. Over time he was able to scrounge up enough funds to barter for his freedom, and to pay for his passage home.   Hasim's homecoming was not all he hoped it would be. His parents had lied for the past few years, telling people that he was in regular contact with them, and that he had become so successful that he was practically a He wishes!Merchant Prince. In return for him leaving, and so not risk their lies being found out!never to return, they offered him a Stipend to live however he wished, on the agreement that he do so far away! So without a home, but with money to invest and a Silver Tongue, he was well set up to start his career as a travelling Merchant, looking for places that have been hit by troubles, as there is always a way for a cunning trader to make himself useful in these hotspots. Sandpoint had been one such place, and he had done his part to re-establish free trade in the town and the local area. Things looked as though they had returned to normal now. In fact there was a local festival planned soon. Hasim planned on using this event as either a last opportunity to make a profit before moving on, or to invest more fully in the local economy. ..... A few years (and several adventures) later, Hasim returned home noticeably richer than when he left, with coin enough to even satisfy the inflated reputation that his parents had inadvertently given him, he reinvested his wealth into a more permanent venture in the Katapeshi Merchant Quarter, and armed with the knowledge and contacts he had built up over the years, managed to make a success of it. Name: "Honest" Hasim Race: Human, Katapeshi Class: Cleric (Leadership & Defence Subdomains) of Abadar Appearance: His height has dramatically increased since his days as a sewer jack (perhaps due to his later access to fresh air, decent food and actual sunlight), but he remains as rakishly thin as he was in his youth. Hasim is invariably either grinning or preening, and usually both at the same time. Impeccably (though not flashily) dressed in Katapeshi Merchant's Garb. Personality: Greedy, Mercantile, not evil or cruel but a true Businessman, will exaggerate an item or services worth to the point of ridiculousness, but he will honour every contract, just make sure you read the small print! He is easy to overlook unless he wants to be noticed, then his strangely hypnotic voice can convince a person of almost anything! Perhaps due to his history of travelling to far away climes (and making a healthy profit there) he does not have the same bias against foreigners that many of his countrymen have. Motivation: Hasim is a simple man with a simple dream, and that dream is to own enough Gold Coins to drown a city! Obtaining wealth and putting himself in a position where he can obtain more wealth, is his primary concern. Of course, being alive to horde it, and having living people around to trade with, will certainly filter their way into his thinking as well! Traits: You gain a +2 trait bonus on Diplomacy checks to influence hostile or unfriendly creatures, and if you fail at such an attempt, you may retry it once.Patient Optimist, You increase the gp limit of any settlement by 20% and can resell items at an additional 10% over the amount of gp you normally would get from selling off treasure.Merchant Family Character Sheet WIP Role Playing Sample 1:   "Honest" Hasim Hasim hurried over to open up his Stall, his yawning Workers appearing a couple of minutes later. "I really shouldn't have waited for you all!" He muttered as they set out the last few items on display. "I KNEW the rush of potential customers would start early, so I should have been out even EARLIER. Hmph! At least we have a good view of everything!" He gestured around. Their Stalls were slightly elevated, so they did indeed have a good view of the proceedings. "Very well Gentlemen!" He said to his Staff, seeing that all was ready. "It's Showtime!" He opened up the Shutters and subjected the Crowd to his stereotypical Merchants patter. "ROLL UP, ROLL UP! COME ON LADIES, COME ON GENTLEMEN, HAVE-A-LOOK, HAVE-A-LOOK! IF HONEST HASIM DOESN'T HAVE IT THEN YOU DON'T NEED IT! VERY, VERY GOOD. VERY, VERY CHEAP!" Role Playing Sample 2:   "Honest" Hasim 'Twas the night before the Midwinter festival and all the children in Taldor were excitedly awaiting the dawn, with the treats they would receive and the feast they would enjoy....all the children except those that lived in the tiny village of Canton Vale, that is! Set in a valley among the mountains, they had been completely cut off from the rest of the empire by the worst storm in living history. The previous harvest had been terrible, but the people had pooled what little funds they had in order to buy winter supplies...which had run out nearly a week ago. Normally, they could have begged for aid from another town but with the storm raging there was no way they could make it anywhere. Much like children everywhere else, the young of Canton Vale had trouble sleeping, but rather than excitement keeping them awake it was dread and hunger! But wait! A strange sound could be heard over the wind. It sounded like jingling and of someone shouting! "Ho, ho, ho!" The children began to look out from their window shutters to see what was going on. Many of the adults woke up, scolding them for letting what little heat they had escape, but then stopping because they could hear it too. Jingling, shouting, hoof-beats now, and was that a light they could see approaching from the windswept darkness? It was! Attached to the light was something large. The hoof-beats hinted that something was being driven towards them at speed, perhaps a wagon, or maybe a sleigh! "HO, HO, HO!" The voice bellowed, much louder now that it had closed on the villagers which had begun to gather in front of their homes. Bursting into sight of the villagers torches was a wagon being dragged by a terrified and half-dead horse, while a flamboyantly dressed middle aged man tried desperately to regain control of it! "Ho..Ho..HOLD IT, HASIM SAYS!" Yells the man, giving the reins one last desperate tug before he ploughed into the locals! Miraculously, it worked! The horse stopped just shy of the crowd and started shuddering uncontrollably. The Man looked out at the surprised looking people. "Ah, hello there! Hasim's horse got spooked by wolves on the way over. Hasim has..." "FOOD!" Shouted a little girl in glee, pointing at the wares in the wagon. Seeing this as an ideal opportunity to start up with his salesman patter, the man started gushing: "Oh yes, Hasim has food...supplies...everything to get you through this nasty Winter..." The eager villagers gathered round, reaching for the contents of the cart. "...and all at the lowest possible cost!" They stopped. ""Cost?"" Repeated the girl, confused by the word. "Means we'd 'ave ter pay fer it Bridgette!" said an old woman. The people that had already picked up items began to place them back on the cart. Beginning to realise just how bad the situation was there, Hasim made a decision that would change the course of his life for the next few years. "Hasim was...kidding?" He says, uncertain of the words coming out of his mouth. "...erm, Happy Midwinter Festival, everyone. Tuck in!" There was a slight pause, then an almighty cheer went up from the villagers. They unloaded the cart heartily heaping many a "Thank you, stranger" and "The Gods bless you, Sir" onto Hasim's drooping shoulders as they did so.

I think this is a type of character I am looking for, thank you for that great app. Honest Hasim is simple, straight forward, and his motives are clear. He seems to know himself and what he wants: money and worship of commerce.

In a land beholden to Abadar and with one of the PCs already a worshiper to the God of Coin, I think you'll fit right in.

Yawi Name: Yawi (formerly Iman el-Parsa) Race: Human Class: Pact Wizard (Teleportation School) Traits: Pragmatic Activator, Reactionary Appearance: Clad in yellow cloth from head to toe, the hooded figure is easily recognizable in a crowd despite his facial features being hidden. Deep within his golden hood a pair of intense eyes can be seen almost glowing from the shadows. Closer inspection shows a jagged scar that starts from his upper cheek into the wrap that masks his lower face. His body is lean though not emaciated and he moves with an ease that suggests a youthful body free of the aches and pains of time. Constantly in motion, Yawi's head is continuously scanning around him, as if searching for the next ambush or attack. Utilizing a magical discus to traverse long distances as well as a protective fortification in battle, the young wizard often seen sitting crossed legged upon the disk as he hovers around like it is his own personal flying carpet. Despite his colorful outfit, Yawi is not very flamboyant or extravagant in either words or actions. However through his signature garb and his unique method of transportation he has still made quite a name for himself. Rumor has it that he doesn’t sleep and many of the caravans who hire him as an escort find him to be a guide and guard without equal, but often to disconcerting to hire again. Personality: While his tone is respectful most of the time, the deference seems to be more from upbringing than actual high regard. Indeed, those who get to know the young mage will often overhear his true thoughts through mumbled whispers. The wizard possessing an acerbic tongue and a sardonic tone to those he is comfortable around, or to those he believes cannot hear him. Betrayed and humbled by those he trusted in the past, Yawi is not one to warm up to those around him. Even the few merchants and innkeepers he is close to are little more than friendly acquaintances, treated warmly and respectfully, but never fully trusted or confided in. Unable to depend on others Yawi has taken to using a combination of magic and the local narcotic pesh to forgo sleep. The combination has made him jittery and short-tempered, but Yawi considered it an acceptable price to being free from the dependence of “friends”. Backstory   Born the youngest son of modestly successful merchants. Iman el-Parsa was granted the privilege of an excellent education and upbringing. As the youngest child, Iman was unlikely to inherit much of his parent's estate and so sought his own fortune in service to his Country and City. An intelligent and talented mage, Iman's trajectory was meteoritic as he rose up quickly in prestige and made a name for himself as a member of the elite Zephyr Guard providing tactical support for his unit in their apprehension of magical thieves. Though his rise was swift and unprecedented, it ultimately only served sadly as a foil to his eventual fall, which was equally quick and unstoppable. Discovering corruption within the Guard's ranks, and involving not just his companions but his superiors as well, Iman risked all to bring the thieves to justice. Unfortunately a misstep was all it took to expose not only his plans, but his evidence to those he fought against, and Iman was framed, ambushed, and left for dead. A disgrace to his family's name, and a pariah to any who discovered he was still alive. Unable to leave his City while his former companions escape justice, Iman abandoned his name and family, taking upon the identity of Yawi: a caravan guard, mercenary, and sometimes guide to Katapesh. In between jobs, Iman continues the investigation that seemingly killed him, desperate to redeem his familia name, and get revenge on those who he once trusted. Nicknamed the Golden Mage, Yawi is known to be a dependable, if at often times overly intense caravan guard. His work over the last couple years have helped establish him in the region, and while he is not very warm or friendly to those who hire him, he has nevertheless formed several connections to the merchants in the City. Roleplaying Sample   "Careful Iman, you must be delicate son, you cannot just probe around poking those clumsy fingers in every crack or crevice. This is an art." Two figures leaned over the workshop table, a strange hexagonal object sitting between them. The larger, older of the two slipped two fingers behind his glasses, pinching the base of his nose as he squinted, his eyes fatigued. "Feel your way, but let your instincts guide you, you must consider the piece, the style, the owner. Intuit where to press." Sighing silently the man puts a steady hand on the young boy, exuding a calming aura as he guides his son. "Yes, father, I understand. It is just... just, I don't think intuition is needed here." His voice cracked slightly, but his hands seemed sure as they twisted a hidden joint. "These grooves seem to be representative of Ley Lines, and the symbols around them directions for the energy to flow. This is less a trigger to activate and more a puzzle to solve." The object clicks are Iman's deft hands twist and turn. A soft hum emanates from the device as a blueish glow travels down the grooves before it starts to levitate a foot off the workshop table. Whistling under his breath the father pats his son on the back encouragingly. "By the Master's vault. How?" Astonishment tinged with pride colors his voice as he stares down at Iman. His brow furrowed as he looks down at the young lad, thoroughly confused. Reaching down a calloused finger taps the side of the device, a tiny spark of power arching from finger to hexagonal artifact, jolting him back. Sucking on a singed finger the father looks down at his son once again, more thoughtful than before. How did you do it son?" Smiling broadly, the young lad winks at his dad as he leans in closer to the device, hand hovering nearby, guiding the object as it floats around the table as if pulled by invisible strings. "The books I had you buy me Father. In one I read about menhirs, the lightning stones, giant monoliths used in a battle of ancient Elementals. Something about this device, the groves, the writing, reminded me of the objects and the theories of their creation. This is no more than a trinket though, probably used as a marker on some ancient Lord's Map to designate where these stones once stood. I must admit father, I have found my studies on magic to be most illuminative, more so than the instruction I have been given as a merchant. I am not sure I have the..... knack, for this. You asked me to feel it, to trust my instincts, but my instinct is to examine, analyze, and research." Biting his lip the boy looks up at his father worriedly.   The once bustling streets seemed almost empty as a group of hooded figures moved quickly in formation, the promise of mercantile and trading abandoned at the coming of the Zephyr Guard. Moving in unison without any obvious signal or warning all six men turned sharply into a nearby alley in perfect step with each other their footsteps growing distant as the customers of the market come out from their hiding places to continue their business of the day. The Guard stops at the side entrance to a decrepit building, drawing weapons as one of them steps back several paces his hands glowing with magic as he incants several spells upon the men. Nodding to the others, the lone rearguard signals to them with his hands and watches as the five burst through the door, an eerie silence enveloping them and smothering the sounds of them breaching the portal. Lowering his chainmail facemask, the rearguard is revealed as a handsome youth, a relaxed cocky grin splitting his face as he looks upwards to the balcony above. Unlike his compatriots this Guardsman makes a sound, though it is whisper quiet as he disappears and apparates atop the balcony, quietly tapping a leatherbound boot as he keeps a silent count. Satisfied he kicks open the balcony door and conjures up another spell, mist coming from his hands obscuring the vision of the men within. Their shouts of anger and indignation cut short as the door across the room splinters and a magical silence fills the room, along with the other five Guardsmen. The butcher's work is brutal, quick, and efficient. Those few who survive the onslaught long enough to surrender find themselves chained and gagged before being dragged outside to the street below. With the magical silence expired the sounds of exertion can be heard as the Zephyr Guard departs with their prisoners and several bags of magical contraband. One of the men in the front, his additional crests denoting a leadership role turns his head as they march, looking at the cleanshaven youth in the back. "Good work there Iman, we hit them so fast I don't doubt the Nightstalls won't realize their shipments aren't coming for awhile yet. But did you even draw your sword lad?" The handsome youth grins, an infectious, cheeky smile that soon has his companions chuckling. "Well Captain, the plan was going so well, I figured why mess things up by putting a blade in my hands and endangering us all." A couple of the men openly laugh, the knowledge of the youth's ineptitude with a sword well known. "Besides, I'd like to think I played my own part quite well. I trust you could all see and breath through my cloud cover?" Nodding quickly the Captain turns back to the road ahead as the six men and their prisoners keep a steady pace through the streets. "Aye, Lad. As I said, it was good work. You keep this up and I might be out of a job before long. If the missus would ever let me retire." A couple more chuckles slip out from the men, but they are quickly extinguished, the men knowing how quickly the Captain's mood could change.

@Acathala: You're correct! I missed that. I am indeed looking for three players. Thank ye, Acathala.

Though the PCs need someone to guide them in the city, we are going somewhere far beyond Katapesh in a moment so just prepared for some whiplash from the current world at the moment.

What are your guardrails surrounding archetype stacking? I note your mention of paladin, but also that you have a couple of melee folks already, so I was thinking Divine Hunter, Knight of Coins, and maybe Tempered Champion. Or might just look at ranged inquisitor, in which case the question is moot.
