I think he means Jakes Magpie who is in the bilge with him. I will point out that the text next to 'Man the Bilges' say to clean the bilges, which is not the same as pumping the bilges.
This text explains the importance of cleanliness and, especially, dryness of a ship. The blige would be pumped as dry as possible first, then the bilge itself would be cleaned, including the bottoms of the pumps in any area that could be gummed up as well as scrubbing/scraping mold and/or mildew. Depending on the chemicals available, chlorine could be added, and the planking could be washed with chemicals designed or thought to be anti-mold. Of course on a fantasy pirate ship, there may be more or less focus on cleanliness. Last edited by Brian; Dec 1st, 2021 at 04:25 PM. |

Derp. He almost certainly did. And I made top scores in reading comprehension. *facepalm* But I did have Plugg say "pump the bilges" because I wasn't aware there was a difference. In this case it appears that the characters are working in the absolute dredges of an at least partially drained bilge, sludge about ankle deep. They're essentially breaking up any large bundles of waste and keeping the siphons clear. There's only really one pump described but it doesn't really seem to factor into anything other than the fact that it's present. The reasons for being in the bilge room at other times has nothing to do with the operation of the pump, as I initially thought.

Or, the GM made a somewhat open ended storyline request, and the player took that opening, and drove a freight train through it, totally wrecking it and derailing the story the GM had thought about completely.
Ungrateful players...

You're giving me waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more credit than I deserve if you think I can come up with a significantly interesting plot point around pumping the bilge.

See above, you're giving me waaaaaaaaaaaaay more credit than I deserve if you think I can come up with a significantly interesting post around pumping the bilge. I mean, interesting posts, in general, are a bit of a stretch, if satisfyingly sesquipedalian.

"Punishment," the man finally said to Badger. "Just punishment. Can't clean a thing, till they start the pumping up top and lower the bilge level. He raised a small leather bucket. Then you scoop, and carry up to the top deck. But they don't start the pumps, so you just stay here for the entire watch."
"Punishment," he summed up.

Just checking through the list of actions and tasks. Am I right in thinking that we are posting for a full day's actions? Day and night actions, or just day actions? And is the cook (Fishguts) in his cabins down below deck, or is there a kitchens area there somewhere? Graak wants to go check out ol' mate Fishguts and find out he isn't some long lost relative of his.

I should have been a bit clearer there. You're posting for day actions only, at the moment. There's a bit of an interlude that's going to happen. Fishguts is passed out drunk in the galley (kitchen).

I was going to post then realized I need to make sure that the captured turtle is not Lyneth's actual spirit or if it's just another turtle? Big difference on actions depending on which it is. Well, maybe not beginning actions but later actions for sure.

It is indeed Lyneth's familiar. I couldn't find a name for it. There's supposed to be a cooking roll off for Cook's Mate but this was the best way to make sure you could prepare your spells daily.

While many of these pirates are the scum of Golarion, I would never use that to convey just how vile they are. That said, I very much appreciate how everyone's getting into the feel of the thing. Except for Dirk, whose off somewhere reading about bilge pumps. But I definitely don't want any of my players worried about having to engage with anything that triggering*.
*Unless I post a face pic, in which case I expect everyone to send me compliments.
