The Nightmare Begins

The weather was a radiant example of celestial beauty, full of warmth and vigor like only the perfect day could bring. Brilliant, billowy, white clouds casually glide across the canvas above, blissful in their whimsical flutter. Despite the scattered clouds across the expanse that is the azure sky, not once did the dazzling sun ever obstructed. The rays of the sun were gentle and warm throughout the entire day, accompanied by a subtle breeze that could bring life to the hardest of hearts. It was a perfect day, blessed by the kindhearted gods of Faerun, a fitting beginning for what will be an important end.

Today is the last day of Flamerule and the people of Darromar are cheerfully preparing for the event to come. Throughout the beautiful day, the many streets of the grand city bustle with activity, as the diverse populous gather food and decorations to celebrate the Midsummer Night Festival. A celebration of love and music, the Midsummer Festival is a day of joy across Faerun; full of vibrant red, yellow, and gold hues in the form of feathered wreaths and flower offerings, honoring the summer sun. Largely considered the longest night of year, the night of the festival is full of feasting and reveling, but sometimes things simply are not meant to be. Foul weather on this special night is strongly considered a bad omen, and the events that follow are world changing...

It had only been an hour after the night eclipsed the day, shrouding the land in shadow. The burning embers, and various magical lights, of the festival had been holding back the all-consuming darkness of the night while the celebration attempted to rage on. A priest of Lathandar attending the occasion had begun to rally the revelers for a ceremonial speech, but that was when it happened, the lights of the festival began to fade. Without so much as a breeze, or even the notable use of a spell, the lanterns and candle flames throughout Darromar burned out, leaving only the signature smell that follows. The magical lights began to dim, their mystical energies barely clinging to their meager existence.

Whispers in the night surged like wildfire as people began to worry amidst the dark. Spell casters attempted to empower or make new light sources, while citizens desperately tried to relight the lanterns and candles. Something, however, was terribly wrong; the fires would go out immediately and the spells backfired on their casters. Fear of the ominous, bad omen caused doomsayers to cry their tales of Armageddon, or other unpleasant prophecies, producing panic in the hearts of the people. Those outside were quickly ushered home by those brave enough to handle the cruel dark, encouraged to stay indoors until the light of the sun begins to hold back the night.

You are aware of the superstition surrounding Midsummer Night, but in this world of magic you know that superstitions are not to be ignored. Eventually you succumb to the sandman’s spell, passing through the veil of dreams. Your dream is pleasant at first, but it becomes twisted with time. As you toss and turn in the dark, you fall victim to your greatest fear. Time seems to pass slowly when terror grips your heart, and as you restlessly thrash in the night something sinister stirs in the shadows of Darromar.

Suddenly, you are awakened in the night as a horrifying, shrill cry pierces the quiet dark. You find yourself drenched in sweat as it rolls off your frightened face; panic and terror have long filled your heart, born from the nightmare that you embraced throughout the night. At first, you think it part of the dream, but then the cry shatters the calm night once again. Whether through simple curiosity or a desire to commit righteous justice, you find yourself leaping out of bed to investigate the shrill in the night. However, if you had known what awaited you in dark, you would have never allowed yourself to wake…
