As gruesome as the bifurcated razorcrow appeared, the sight of its lifeless upper half still filled Arthos with a perverse joy. Take that, he thought as he quickly surveyed his unlikely handiwork. He had no time for celebration, however, as another arrow whizzed past him ineffectually. "Surrender, and we will spare your life!" he shouted in Goblin across the river to the clearly upset hobgoblin, still perched in the tree. Arthos couldn't tell if the creature hadn't understood him, or simply chose to ignore him, but it produced another arrow from the quiver at its side and notched it.

"Incoming!!" Arthos shouted as he crouched down and attempted to run for cover, sheathing his rapier and attempting to pull out his trusty shortbow in order to take a shot at the last assailant.

The sounds of battle drifted to Griff’s ears as he tried to hack his way through the undergrowth. He looked back at their hardy companion, she looked as tired as he felt, but he couldn’t leave his other companions to fight alone. Given that he had been hacking his way through thick undergrowth of a forest, a quick search of his surroundings found any number of branches of which Griff could tie Petals reins. He randomly chose one, gave her a quick pat on the head and charged forward to help his companions.

Hearing what he could only assume to be Goblin being yelled out gave a real impetus to Griff’s step as he came. As he burst into the clearing, Griff spotted the remains of two overly large crows. However, his eye was drawn to the hobgoblin by the simple fact that Arthos was pointing his bow towards it. His mind made up, Griff committed himself to covering as much ground towards the Hobgoblin as he could and ran headlong across the clearing and over the bridge.

Taggoret river

On the far side of the river the hobgoblin became visibly agitated, it obviously hadn't expected it's heartless trap to be quite so effective and attract the beast it now faced. Thias's arrow whistling past it's head and Arthos' rapier slicing through the remaining razorcrow caused it to let out a dreadful howl of frustration but there was a definite hint of fear to be heard in the cry.

All alone now against three armed foes it was caught between standing it's ground and making a run for it.

Just as it reached the decision that perhaps living to fight another day was the best course of action open to it Griff made a daring run right across the battle field to the far side of the bridge.
This new enemy didn't do much to help the hobgoblins desperation but making a run for it now would mean having this new and rather large assailant right behind him. Out of panic and a sense of survival it reached quickly for another arrow, drawing and taking aim on the new threat, even a badly placed shot in the leg would help slow the armoured man with the sword down and he could jump from the tree and make good his escape.

He just had to hit the man, the target was big enough there was no doubt there but his hands were shaking as he held the bow at full draw and sighted along the shaft.

'Jus' hit man! Jus' hit man!' it thought as the tip of the arrow wavered back and forth. It closed it's eyes and Attack: 1d20+3sh15 (13)+3 Total = 16released the wooden missile but didn't even wait to see where it went, throwing its bow to the ground it leapt after it, the full ten feet, stumbling but quickly rising and picking up its bow in the process. Clear panic was in it's eyes as it scanned all around looking for the best direction to run, obviously it's ambush hadn't accounted for this situation.

Hearing the groan of Damage: 1d6g {3}pain from the direction of the bridge it smiled a crazy fear riddled smile, perhaps escape was possible after all.

Thias watched intently at the hobgoblin’s movements in his tree stand. They had become disjointed, panicked and frantic at this point. Not entirely unlike the suffering fox. After all, his pet raptors had been dispatched and he now had the undivided attention of the entire party.

Trent’s infernal appearance was enough to inspire fear and the arcane energy that danced at his fingertips served only to cement that opinion.

Arthos had no sooner cleaned his blade of bird gore and feathers and had now decided to share his displeasure with their master by arrow point.

Then there was this giant of a man tearing towards the hobgoblins vantage in long pounding strides like an unstoppable Tarasque through a helpless village. His wicked blade ready to spill blood.

Thias watched helplessly as the hobgoblin managed to get a shot off and hit Griff. Then the idiot actually jumped from his stand! Thias watched for for a few more seconds, looking for repetition or rhythm that he could take advantage of. A tell of direction.

There it is.

Thias Attack: 1d20+4(16)released his arrow with leave to the right. The hobgoblin turned directly into the arrow just as he had predicted. It drove deep into his shoulder and he let out a scream that echoed through the tree tops.

Perhaps this will allow Griff to make his rebuttal to being hit with an arrow. Thias felt a momentary flash of pity for the hobgoblin.

The goblin squealed with the newly acquired arrow jutting from it's shoulder. Trent could see that it was attempting to escape from Griff's powerful form before he reached it's vantage point. After dispatching one of the birds and seriously wounding the other, Trent was confident that his spells would be equally devastating to their master. He moved his pointed fingers in the direction of the hobgoblin. Another sharp snap followed another arcane needle of force that screeched across the stream and into Trent's target.

The hobgoblin leapt from the tree branch like he was diving from a cliff into the welcoming waters of a blue lake; the scrub beneath the tree didn't greet him with a refreshing "glunk" and a splash, however. There was a loud crunch, followed by a thud and a squeal. The beast had disappeared beneath the foliage, and there was no movement for what seemed like an eternity. Arthos stood silently watching the scene play out in disbelief. Finally, the creature's head popped up above the bushes, a wild look of terror in its eyes. It sensed the urgency of its predicament, and after collecting its things from the ground, it bolted for the cover of the deep forest.

Arthos heard a grunting sound approaching rapidly behind him, so he turned to investigate. The monstrous mass of Griff was barrelling toward the bridge, and him, at full speed. He quickly sidestepped the rushing fighter, nearly falling into the small river that ran beneath the wooden crossing. Well, my work here is done. He couldn't help but chuckle at the turn of events. He watched contently as Griff crossed the bridge in two strides and closed the distance with his prey. "Glad you could join us, Griff!" he called after him with the utmost sincerity.

The hobgoblin had time to revel in the damage it had done with it's arrow and was even grinning to itself as it turned to make its run into the woods. It would follow this group undetected at a distance and pick them off one by one when they least expected it, they would not be allowed to get away with this insult and two of his birds were dead, did they know how long it took to train those birds and now he would have to trap and train more, oh they would pay these nasty little killers, they would pay alright.

But not right now, first he had to escape and with that thought he took his first step and was nearly knocked clean off hit feet as the arrow thumped into his shoulder. The pain was intense and he squealed loudly, the tip of the heavy shaft had narrowly missed his heart not that he felt particularly grateful at that moment. He staggered forward a step his vision narrowing, this was bad, this was very bad but he may yet survive.
That was the moment when an icy blast hit him and the heart which had been so lucky moments before stopped.

With Milon’s disparaging remarks about running into trees still burning his ears, Griff was disappointed to find an arrow had made its way through his armour. He couldn’t help but feel disappointed that if he hadn’t charged heedlessly towards the hobgoblin, he probably wouldn’t be in this predicament. Despite his disappointment, he was truly frustrated that Trent’s magic had cut down the hobgoblin before he could. He was about to say as much before he tried to mentally calculate the distance between himself and the corpse of his foe. He may not be all that clever, but even he could realise that the hobgoblin would have been able to get off another shot at him before he could have gotten his revenge. So instead, he offered his thanks.

"Say Trent, if I had a cap, I’d tip it off to ya. That magic of yours sure does come in handy. I’d be reckonin’ he’d have gotten at least another shot at me before I’d have reached him. So while I sure would have liked to put me pa’s falchion through him, I don’t like the idea of “running into another tree” as Milon would have put it."

With that, Griff casually ambled over to the corpse of the hobgoblin and kicked it in the ribs for good measure. Not willing to rummage through the guts of the hobgoblin in a fashion similar to Trent, he nevertheless bent down and Perception check 1d20(14)+7 = 21rummaged through the corpse and it’s belongings, hoping for at least some insight as to why it had laid this ambush, or something of a more material nature.

Trent began to pant heavily was the excitement of the battle came to a close. He hadn't realized it, but he had held his breath to steady himself during the casting of the last spell. Now that the adrenalin began to fade, Trent noticed that Griff had been injured once again. Only now did he realize that Griff's aggressive progression towards their mutual enemy perhaps caused it's arrow to find him rather then the assailant that brought down one of it's pets. Griff was a tough customer who looked like he could take a hit, as evident by his ability to continually "run into trees". Trent has spent most of his life in the shadows and hasn't a single scar to mark him. He was unsure if he could take such punishment. He owed a lot to the large warrior. "I should thank you, Griff. I could be wearing that arrow if you hadn't showed up. I'm glad you did. I'm happy to dispatch anyone who is attacking you, any of you," he said, gesturing to all in company. "I think I would have failed well before now if I had taken this upon myself. I'm actually glad you all burst into Laurel's shop when you did. Even if I didn't seem like it at the time."

Trent spotted Petals tied off on one of the branches that Griff had somehow managed to keep intact. He moved over and untied her and gave her a compassionate pat. As usual, Nail emerged and sought the same. Trent lead Petals though to the path that had seemed to open up. "Come on girl, let's keep moving."

Thias watched as Trent’s spell hit the hobgoblin full force, causing it to draw its final breath. The body landed with a loud thud, a look of shock and indignation on its face countered with glassy unseeing eyes.
While the hobgoblin’s fate could be called deserved, Thias could not help but notice disturbing parallels to his own. For all intents and purposes, they shared the same occupation. True, Thias used non-lethal methods and would not have resorted to any of the tactics the hobgoblin employed, but on the surface the obvious comparisons were still evident.

And Thias did not care for that at all.

Trent had gone to calm Petals. Griff rummaged through hobgoblin’s person for items of interest and would probably need the wounds he received at the hand of the hobgoblin looked at.
“Griff! How fare you?!” Thias called out to the brave fighter.

Thias turned his attention to the fox still covered in his cloak beneath him. He carefully swaddled the small creature and examined the wounds on its leg, trying to establish if anything could be done to ease its suffering.

Griff’s search of the hobgoblin turned up very little besides its possessions and it didn’t seem to have too many of those. There was the bow of course a scruffy wooden shortbow, some leather armor which looked like even the cow it had been made from had been old. Then there was the arrow sticking from its shoulder and buried well into the corpse. It had been quite the shot Thias had made forty five feet or so at the moving hobgoblin who was partially concealed by the bush it had leaped from. If that shot hadn't stopped the creature in its tracks perhaps it wouldn’t even have been here for Trent’s freezing ray. The shaft was too deeply buried to retrieve it without getting messy so he settled for the small bundle of six others the hobgoblin had been carrying. A pitiful creature indeed Griff could only surmise that it had laid the trap either hoping for a meal or perhaps as a simple act of banditry although you would have to wonder about its intelligence if it were hoping for highway robbery on a track out here in the middle of nowhere. I guess now they would never know the answer and that was probably for the best, at least no more innocents would be attacked out here in the wilderness.

Trent wandered over to check on Petals and found that she had successfully cleared a rather large patch of the luscious green grass around the base of the tree Griff had tied her to. Not perturbed in the least she was now looking about for the target of her next culinary delight. He had certainly secured a gem in this one, if he’d wanted to enter the local derby he may have been a little more disappointed, she wasn’t one for rushing at things unless they were edible. The thought of him plodding around a race track on her back while people ran from the stands screaming was amusing perhaps but trying to make a hasty getaway on the methodical Petals would have been a little less so. But for the work he needed her for she was not only perfectly suited but also a wonderful companion, so long as he kept putting food into her, and there always seemed to be room for a little more, she didn’t care if he was red, blue or wearing his grandmothers night gown.

Thias, looked to the fox, it had settled during the combat, while everyone else’s pulse had risen the fox hidden beneath the cloak had relaxed and taken some much needed rest. It had probably saved its life he considered, the stress of an incident like this was often enough to kill an animal even without the wounds. This was a strong little fellow though and as Thias DC 14 heal check. Assumed a Take 10 heal. Sorry I need to start getting into the habit of asking in advance.tended its wounded leg he concluded that it would live, it would probably take a week or just under to heal but it would live. The fox looked up at him, it had obviously realised that Thias wasn’t trying to hurt it and even though it was Arthos who had managed to open the rusty trap it’s head had been buried beneath the cloak at the time and the scent was all Thias. It’s often all too easy to layer imagined intelligence on another creature but this small dog like animal did have a look of intense thoughtfulness in its eyes. It whined a little and nuzzled against Thias’s hand rubbing its head up and down his arm in what could only be taken for gratitude, imagined or otherwise.
It would be better if weight were kept off the injured leg for a day or two in order to aid the healing but the cloak already wrapped around it would serve as a sling to keep it both warm and safe. A little to heavy for Thias to lug around the forest he looked back towards Trent and Petals.

Arthos looked both relieved and disappointed, his gallant rush forward onto the bridge had been overshadowed and the hobgoblin dead before he could even draw a bead. But these companions of his were working well together and the thundering rush of Griff hammering across the bridge in defence of his friends, with little thought to his own safety, well that was something worth more than any treasure the big man now scavenged the corpse for.

Thias looked down at the bedraggled fox. Its small obsidian black eyes stared thankfully into his before it broke into an adorable nuzzle followed by an equally precious sigh and whine.

Beloved childhood memories flashed across Thias thoughts. His foster mother had taken in (as she did with all manner of creatures great and small) this scraggly pup. It was flea ridden, malnourished and was literally on death’s door. How it had survived before Nana’s care was anyone’s guess, but the stubborn dog refused to just lay down and die. It relished and excelled in her tender care and before long it was back to full strength. After this the small pup had made up its mind that it was of equal size and ferocity of a warg and it NEVER left his “mother’s” side.

Nana struggled to find a name to match the latest addition to her family, until she remembered her travels in the Mwangi Expanse and her time spent with the elvish tribe of Kallijae. Roughly translated the word meant “stubborn” or “relentless”.

Thias always liked that dog.

Thias couldn’t help but smile at the similarities. “I think Z’Anî suits you just fine my little friend.”

"Well chosen, Thias. I have never seen an animal so intent on clinging to existence on this plane. Z’Anî will make a fine addition to our motley group. There must be some justice left in this world if the bait has outlived the fisherman." The party was gathering around the ranger and his new companion, partly to see what all the fuss was about, but also to sit near the edge of the stream and rest after the excitement of the ambush. The attack had happened so quickly, adrenaline was high and everyone's hearts were still racing. Griff was gingerly testing the depth of the arrow that had struck him, wincing at each prod. It seemed as if he wasn't sure whether to pull it out or just let his flesh heal around the foreign object and be done with it. Either option seemed the appropriate amount of stalwartness for the tough-as-nails fighter.

Arthos retrieved his rapier and shouldered his bow at his back. He looked around the area near the spent claw trap searching for the crowbar that had liberated the tiny fox. He caught site of the black hunk of metal protruding from a tuft of trampled grass; he bent to pick it up and noticed Trent looking in his direction, as if questioning the existence of the burglar's tool. "I find myself in a lot of situations where creating immediate exits and entrances is of mortal importance," he justified, trying to smile. He was too embarrassed by the sudden attention, so he quickly buried the crowbar into his backpack and turned toward the bridge, blushing.

"Only a couple hours left until we reach the Elder tree, I'd guess," he cleared his throat quietly, trying to recover his confidence without sounding arrogant. "Are you okay to travel, Griff? I neglected to bring any first aid gear, unfortunately, and my recovery abilities are next to non-existent. But, I offer you my shoulder if you need assistance traveling."

Arthos felt terrible that he couldn't do more to help. Griff had done so much for the group already; at least he had taken so much for the group already. Most of the jobs that Arthos had conscripted during his second life had not required the need for first-aid. While he was undercover during an investigation or black mail attempt, he either lived or died; there was no in-between. Sure, there had been those few rare instances where he had awoken in a pool of his own fluids at the bottom of a very dark, very deep well at the edge of town, but sheer determination to complete the task had willed his body to continue functioning. His skin held the memory of those dark days, and he hoped to never find them again. The thought of carrying bandages or healing salves didn't cross his mind because he never wanted to have to use them. His face stung lightly where the crow had tried to flay him, but he tried to ignore the burn and knelt down by the rushing water to splash a handful on his cheeks.

Things were different now, however. He wasn't just looking out for himself. If this task was going to be completed, he needed his friends alive, so he swore to himself then and there that he would stock up on a good supply of aloe and bandages the next time he was in town. There was too much at stake for him to fail because of an infection or broken bone.

"Onward?" he called out behind him as he started across the wooden bridge, hoping someone would follow.

Griff’s hopes of finding some sort of cool scroll like Trent found on the zombie were dashed when the scruffy looking dirty hobgoblin turned out to be nothing more than a scruffy looking dirty hobgoblin. Griff hadn’t noticed the fox as he first charged across the bridge and now wandered over to join his companions.

"I am with you on that Trent. I have a feeling we all may have failed individually; but as a group, we definitely seem to be working well together. Luck, fate, will of the gods, whatever it may be, it seems to be working out so far for us."

Over the years, Griff had survived more than one beating and so, bruising and muscle soreness like he received from the zombie’s slam was something he was used to. Like any who has worked in a kitchen, he had received his fair share of cuts. But a puncture wound like the one this damned arrow had given him was an utterly new feeling to him. It was not feeling he would like to experience again anytime soon. He tried to shrug his shoulders and winced, if I keep up this adventuring life, I suppose it will be something I get used to he told himself.

"I will be honest with you Thias, I am not too sure what to do with the arrow… I’ve never been hit with one before. Getting knocked around like what that Zombie gave me I can handle, but this, how do I take it out?"

Petals walked out towards the others seemingly uncaring to what had transpired there only moments earlier. Trent was truly amazed by her resilience. Almost as hardy as the warrior, Griff, even if only mentally. As Trent was admiring his pet, he noticed that Thias had acquired one of his own, the unfortunate victim of a cruel trap set by the hobgoblin. Trent approached his friend and noticed the admiration that shone in his eyes that rivaled Trent's for Petals. He reached up and let the little fox smell his hand and was surprised at how easily the creature accepted it's new company. As his fingers gently scratched it's nose, Nail came scurrying down Trent's arm and nosily poked around at what all the fuss was about, placing is own small hands around the foxes nose in a friendly manner as though he approved of the new addition. "I say you might have found a friend for life there Thias. I would try to ensure it is a long one. Believe me, it is well worth the effort," Trent said, gently patting Petals down her neck.

Continuing on, Trent passed Griff, who was gingerly prodding the arrow sticking from his leg. "Here, let me take a look at that. Take a seat." He knelt down and gestured to a nearby rock to suit as a temporary chair. He took a look at the arrow and although it had stuck, it wasn't too deep and should only require some simple techniques to remove. He saw the worry on Griff's face, which showed he lacked confidence in Trents abilities. "Fear not. I didn't just sit in Laurel's shop twiddling my thumbs. She had many books that explained the practices of first aid. While I've never had to use them, I know how to remove this with little pain," he said with a smile on his face, which as the first true smile the group had actually seen. The most worrying part about it was his beard tentacles wiggling as though they were excited by the prospect of a smile. Trent took a look at the wound and saw that he simply needed to spread the flesh apart slightly then carefully slide out the arrow head. "Actually, it might be wise to bite down on this when I pull it out." he said as he handed Griff a thick stick. As the large man cautiously bit down, Trent used the knowledge he had acquired through the many books he had read and quickly pulled the skin apart with two fingers and pulling out the arrow with the other.

Not a single noise was omitted by the young warrior, which Trent was unsure was attributed to his first aid skill, or Griffs pain tolerance. Either way, the arrow was removed. With a lack of any real bandage, Trent reached into his pack and pulled out a scrap piece of cloth. I was a strange piece, with a heavy flower pattern, and a fluffy purple fur along the edge. A group of such cloth was laying in Trents pack, torn in shreds in a neat pile, placed there by Trent in order to remove a certain memory from his consciousness. He placed the strange psudo-bandage across the slit that the arrow had caused and tied it off in an effort to prevent any unnecessary blood loss. "There that should do," he said beaming with pride of his newfound skill. Trent made a mental note to look into the art of healing further, seeing as he quite enjoyed it, not to mention it could come in handy.

With the party looking as though they were ready to head off, Trent took Petals lead and set off once again down the track.
