Physical Description: Seoni is fairly tall for a female Varisian, at 5’ 10” she is the tallest in her family, even taller then her Father. She is very fit and rather slim compared to most Varisian women. But she prefers to train and practice with her sword over the more common activities that her fellow Varisian’s do. Her hair is dark brown, and would stay darker if she would keep out of the sun, which she does not. Seoni has quite a few tattoos on her body, her arms, midriff, Legs, and other areas. They all mean something to her or her people, but she has become quite enthralled with them and often spends any extra gold on getting more.

Although to poor or inexperienced to own armor of any quality, she has managed to acquire a rather nice sword. It is her most valuable possession, but she does not keep it safe and locked away. She uses it every day for practice and keeps the blade well honed. The rest of her possessions are of below average quality and often seconds or other used goods and clothing.

Background:

Seoni grew up on the streets of Old Korvosa with the other gypsy children. To often picking pockets or other petty crimes, and more often then not getting into trouble for it. She soon learned just what the people of the city thought of the Varisian gypsies and by the time she was about 10, she had decided that she did not want to be a gypsy either, she wanted to be a Guardsman of Korvosa, to help and protect the people, not steal and cheat them.

But that was not the way her family and tribe worked. They had always worked the people of the city, paying there dues and bribes to the powers that ruled, to be left alone. Of course as a young girl she knew nothing of this and the workings behind the scenes that allowed her family to live and prosper. What she did know was that her big sister Piousa, was always watching out for her and keeping her safe from anyone that would harm her.

As the years passed and Seoni grew older, Piousa was often gone for most of the day and night. When she asked about her she was always told the same thing, “she was working with the others” what this work consisted of Seoni was not sure. But in her late teen years, she started to have ideas and was fairly sure just what her sister did to make money for the tribe. She knew that she would never be able to do what her sister did; she was not even that fond of the local boys and young men. But to spend the night with different men of the city, she could never do that she told herself. She still loved her sister and worried about her. But there was little she could do about it. The one time her mother brought up the subject of starting work with the other young women, Seoni went into a rage and swore that she would kill anyone that tried to make her do that or anyone that touched her! Her mother dropped the subject and never brought it up again. Although she was required to help support the Tribe so she continued to work the streets conning and stealing with the younger children. Often working as there guard and supervisor.

During this time her sister had started taking the drug Shiver, although Seoni did not know this at the time. As the drug worked its magic or poison on Piousa she became more and more withdrawn. At the time they hardly saw each other, Seoni working during the day and Piousa working the night. In just a short time, less then 6 months, Piousa was dead from an overdose of Shiver, whether taken deliberately or forced to take, no one knew. What they did now was she was dead and there was little anyone could do about it. This angered Seoni greatly, she went to see guards and others to try to get help with what she called a murder, but most were not interested and the few that listened to her said there was nothing they could do.

She decided that she was going to find out who had killed her dearest sister and extract her own justice! It was actually rather easy to find out who was running the drug trade that her sister had died from. It was a man that went by Gaedren Lamm, he had orphans selling the drugs and stealing for him. Although he was old and rather weak, he always had others around him and hardly ever left the safety of his compound. And at this point she only had a small dagger, really just a knife, and she would need a better weapon to kill this man.

For the next several months she saved coin and did what she could to hideaway enough gold for a proper weapon. As luck would have it, she acquired a long thin sword from one of the local thieves that desired her gold over his weapon. He swore it was not stolen, but she doubted his word. It mattered little to her though, as it was unmarked and a finely crafted sword. (Sword is a Rapier) She started to practice with is and continued to practice every day, becoming very skilled in its use.

Recently she tried to join the Korvosa Guard, but after many test and several interviews she was given the option of joining the reserve. She did not want this, she wanted active duty and training so she could see to her “problem”. But the Capitan was only offering her a chance for the reserve unit. She protested and demanded to see the Field Marshal. Much to her surprise her request was granted. Upon entering the Field Marshals office and standing at rigid attention as she had seen guards do, she was finally told to sit after several long minutes. What transpired next was the most embarrassing thing that Seoni had ever endured. The Marshal knew much more about Seoni then she had told the other guard officers during her interviews. She quickly realized that they knew who she was, who her family was and what they did, who her sister was and how she died. They even had a list, quite a long list of crimes that she had committed. Including whom she acquired the sword from, who happed to be in jail now. At the end of the short but sharp scolding that she received, she was also surprised to hear that she still had the offer to join the reserve unit and that MAYBE, if she got her act together and stopped lying to Guard Offices she MIGHT have a chance to join an active unit. But it was all up to her. At the end of all this, she was told by Field Marshal Cressida Kroft that she though Seoni had potential and that she should take the offer given to her, as they would not make an additional offer. At that point she was dismissed back to the Capitan who was waiting in the other office. She quickly singed the papers and became a member of the Guard Reserve. Now how to tell her Mother and Father!

Physical Description: Zylan is a slender but tall half elf with very white skin that is soft and makes him look almost vampire if the shadows fall right. He stands at about 6’3with a wiry build that puts him around 163 pounds. His hair is a bluish black with a few strands of dark icy blue hair hanging down in the form of bangs as the rest of his hair falls down around his neck without touching his shoulders. His eyes are mismatched between a vibrant purple in the right eye underneath a black brow while the left eye is an icy light blue that is almost bluish white. His nose is small and thin and a little bit long. His lips are thin and tend to be a rather pale color, much more pink than red. His chin is sleek and pointed with not a trace of a whisker on it anywhere.

 

Personality: Zylan doesn’t get mad. Whether this has something to do with the icy heritage of his mother, or it is just the way he is, he has never gotten truly angry yet in his life. He is usually cheerful, though not too the level of bouncing all over the place and oozing cheeriness all over the place. He is the playful one with a lopsided smile. Deep down inside though, behind the smiles, there lies a lust for power in the form of magic. He loves being able to snap his fingers, feeling the power flowing through him and out into the world to do as he wishes. It sends shivers down his spine and he wants more power, but he wants it quietly, he doesn’t talk about it. He is kind and quiet, with a love of food and company. He enjoys a good, light conversation and even pranks now and again, though he thinks gnomes take it beyond the extreme. He also doesn’t have much in the way of a sense of honor, tending to be more pragmatic and seeing things such as honor as delusions of grandeur.

Background:

 

Step 1: Write 5 background and concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the character. These can be a concept overview, a list of important life events, a physical description, a personality profile...whatever you need to get an image in your mind. 5 is just a minimum...more elements are encouraged!


1) Zylan is the son of a female snow elf named Telsarra who came down from her icey mountain village to find a mate outside of the village. She took up with Zylan’s father, Arioch Talron, an azlanti who didn’t fit in with own often snobby group and so he left, somehow managing to be welcomed into a Varisian caravan. Telsarra spend a year with Arioch, giving birth to Zylan before she returned to her icey home in the dead of night. Born of an Elf and an Azlanti in a Varisian caravan, he never quite fit in and so he is often alone and withdrawn, though he does try to make friends and can be jolly company when the mood fits.

2)While Zylan traveled in the Varisian caravan for 20 years, he never quite caught onto their rather celebratory way of life. He will join in a song, and he picked up a very carefree, laid back sort of personality, he broods now because of events that happened after coming to Korvosa. He did pick up the knack to entertain now and then in bars or general company, sometimes he prefers to sit along with a drink with a crease in his brow and a frown on his thin lips.

3) Zylan’s father was a wizard, probably how he managed to get allowed into traveling in a Varisian caravan for 26 years. He attempted to teach Zylan his discipline, with his focus being in conjuration, when the boy first showed magical talent. He was however greatly exasperated to find that the talent didn’t subscribe to written formulae and archaic components. Even then, he encouraged Zylan and taught him what he knew of the arcane arts without trying to interfere with the boy’s budding potential, though that potential often lead to messy caravan wagons.

4) Zylan and his father traveled for 8 more years after leaving the caravan, traveling all over Varisia but never leaving. Eventually they both grew tired of traveling and decided to settle down. They arrived in Korvosa 5 years ago and Arioch used his magic to make a living, crafting objects and doing magic for those that needed it. Eventually though he started to miss the Varisians and the woman he spent a year with. He ended up turning to drinking, and then to drugs, finally finding Shiver and he pursued it with a passion as he wasted away, dreaming of his icy lover. Zylan watched it happen, tried to talk his father into stopping and going back to his work, but it was of no use, in the end Arioch lost himself and wasted away, dying four and a half years after their arrival in Korvosa. Watching his father waste away on a dream of a woman over 30 years old twisted something inside of Zylan and he vowed to find the one who had killed his father with drugs.


5) Zylan doesn’t like Cheliax. He doesn’t like that they consort with devils eagerly and that they focus on the worship of Azmodeus. While he no knight in shining armor himself, the levels to which Cheliax sinks and wallows in evil with glee irks him, as such he has had an interesting time in Korvosa. He has bitten his tongue on it, but he can, every now and then be heard grumbling about devil worshipping Cheliax and how the world would be much better without them. Mostly this springs from the tales his father has told him of Cheliax and its grip on the surrounding area of the continent.


Step 2: List at least two goals for the character. At least one of these goals should be one that the character has, while another should be one that you, as a player, want to see developed over the course of the game.


1) His current driving goal is to track down Gaedren and make him pay for the deaths he has caused with his drugs. He has not yet acted on this, instead he has simply gathered what information he can and is waiting for the opportunity to act on it.


2) I would like to see Zylan embrace his dislike of Cheliax and work on rallying people against the Cheliax rulers in their land and perhaps royalty in general. I am not sure how easily yet Zylan would embrace this but I feel that with his charisma he would make an interesting voice in the conversation.


Step 3: List at least two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet. This will help me in creating plots that center around your character. I will also be creating a third secret which you as a player will not be aware of, so expect some surprises!



1) Zylan is furious at his father for killing himself with drugs. He knows that for a human he was well into old age, but he feels it was a weakness of his father to give in to that sentimental longing the way he did. He can’t take that anger out on his dead father, so he has bottled it up and is liable to take it out on Gaedren in a sadistic and perhaps even horrifying way if he can.

2) Zylan’s mother has actually come down out of her home once more, this time to find her son as she has grown curious as to how he has grown and what path he has chosen in life.

3)Zylan is driven to become more powerful. He doesn't display this much though, more often he is carefree, but he loves the thrill of magic and wants more and is willing to quest for that power.


Step 4: Describe at least three people that are tied to the character. Two of them are friendly to the character, one is hostile. If you like, you can include an enemy of yours here as well, so I have an instant NPC nemesis to throw at you.


1) Zandu was one of the children in the caravan around the same time Zylan was growing up. They became friends, perhaps not good friends as there was always a bit of a gap because Zylan was not of the clan. They still grew up together and soon after Zylan and his father left the caravan he went as well. He was curious to see more of the world than the trade path that his clan followed and so he has been wandering around Varisia, even into Nirmathas before he returned and decided to go see Korvosa.

2) Antil is a young halfling who lives just down the street from Zylan. His father is a sailor on one of the halfling ships that is in and out of Korvosa. His mother is a baker who lets him run around the street, which is how he bumped into Zylan one day who was delivering a chair his father had crafted through magic. They became good friends and while Antil is a bit younger than Zylan they often go to the same bars or walk by the waters as Antil talks of his father’s sea adventures.


3) Grachius, a local guard who turns a blind eye to Gaedren’s activities in the drug trade in return for some of the drug, a small amount, and some gold as well. Zylan reported him to his captain and got a black mark put on his record, though he still remains a guard in the area.


Step 5: Describe three memories, mannerisms, or quirks that your character has. They don't have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.


1) When Zylan was just coming into his magic, one night when the caravan was making a rabbit stew, his magic asserted himself in a way that doused the cooking fire, soaking the logs and causing the clan to have to eat cold, barely cooked stew and sleep cold that night. Zylan often remembers the yelps of surprise at the sudden appearance of water pouring over the flames, the coughing from the smoke and the grumbles as he sits eating a stew, particularly a rabbit stew.

2) Zylan has a tendency to smoke a pipe when he is drinking or at other random times. It is a habit he picked up from a Varisian fortune teller in the caravan he traveled in. Though he rather thinks it suits him more than it did her.


3) He often, in quiet moments, can be hard humming old Varisian songs that he has forgotten the words to even though the tune sticks in his head.

 

Zylan sat in a corner booth in the tavern staring down into the mug of mead in front of him. His blue bangs feel in front of his eyes, hanging down between him and the mead which was showing him a murky reflection of the grungy ceiling above him with its blackened beams and its grimy ceiling that was black and grey from years of smoke wafting upwards. He looked up as one of the men at the card table on the other side of the room bellowed out laughter. The half-elf’s eyes narrowed a bit at the noise as the man’s hand smacked the table as he laughed some more, spittle flying out of the man’s mouth and onto his red beard. Zylan shook his head before lowering his eyes again and he lifted the mead to his lips with a pale hand. Taking a gulp and then leaning back, that same hand letting go of the mug to reach up and brush back the bangs that had fallen forward. A sigh left his lips even as his eyes were drawn to the dark, cloaked figure that was sliding into the booth with him.

The figure pushed back their hood just a bit to reveal the face of a young dwarf by the name of Ingrin. She is a member of the Korvosan Guard and works the areas that Zylan lives in. He had made something like a friendship with her. She wasn’t quite as gruff as the other dwarves he knew and she was interested in the wellbeing of her patrol area, plus she had always been suspicious Grachius and his potential link to a criminal and was happy when Zylan reported him. She looked up at the half-elf and gave him a half smile. "The man you are looking for is named Gaedren Lamm. He is a local criminal, a small time name in the drug trade, several people saw him meeting with your father now and then." She frowned as she said it and shook her head, the hook quivering around her head as she did. "I’m sorry about your father Zylan, and I wish I could help more than this, but the guard is busy elsewhere with criminals, we don’t have the forces to track down every little drug dealer." She sighted and pulled her hood back forward as far as it would go. Her voice came from its dark depths. "I shouldn’t have even told you this but your father was a good man before the drag got him, I’m sorry I can’t do more." With that she slid out of the booth and walked across the room and out of the door of the tavern.

Zylan sighed and shook his head, taking a long draught of the mead before setting down the mug of mead. "Gaedren Lamm, well now I have a name, now I just need a face and a body to go with it and then perhaps justice can be served." He drained his mug of mead and set it down. Slipping out of the booth he stood up, his own cloak falling down around him and he strode to the bar, bootsteps unheard over the guffaws at the poker table and the raucous singing from a drunken group. He tossed a couple of coins onto the bar and then headed for the door. His hands reached into pouches on his belt and pulled out a pipe and a wad of tobacco which he began to pack into the pipe. His feet carried him out into the streets with questions burning in his eyes even as a red glow burned in the bowl of the pipe he had just lit. He puffed on the pipe a few times before letting a cloud of smoke pour from his lips as he started striding down the cobbled street with purpose, his footsteps echoing off the walls of the houses.

Physical Description:     Ibrahím stands at 5'9" and reveals his drow blood being very slender, bearing the midnight coloured skin and the red eyes along with Khal Drogo style braidsbraided silvery hair running to the middle of his back. His ears are pointed but less so than other elves and his shoulders are broad revealing his human side and he is very masculine with each muscle defined. Those who see him now notice his cleanly shaven face with long trimmed sideburns that stretch to his jawline, he wears his monk robes wherever he goes and is always bound with a pair of manacles on his wrists and legs to reveal the seriousness of his vows that he has taken and how no matter how difficult they may be he will face the challenge.

Background:   Step 1: 1) Ibrahím joined the Monastery of Inner strength after a life of drunken homelessness. 2) To those who may accompany him on any exploits he is always polite but is always respectful of people's privacy. He will listen to a person's thoughts and story until they are blue in the face but will not give his opinion ever unless asked to despite what he may think. 3) Ibrahím has trouble being around alcohol, he cannot drink it or smell it sometimes makes him throw up due to his years of drunken vagrancy. 4) As he decided to leave his monastery and monk brothers in order to save his stepsister he took up the vow of chains. This forced Ibrahím to shackle his arms and legs with two pairs of manacles as he thought this was his own way of penance for what he saw to be disobedience to Irori or atleast the monastery that took him in. 5) Ibrahím became a drunk on the streets of many towns and cities after his stepfather commanded he leave his house and his mother and never return. His life became a life of drunk wandering before Ulric showed him a new purpose to work towards. Step 2: 1) To find what has happened to his stepsister to decide the fate of her children. 2) Become released from his vows without penalty from Irori and be gifted with true enlightenment and be able to carry out Irori's will. Step 3: 1) Gaedren Lamm's Second in command is a pedofile and trolls the night inns and brothels for young children, however Ibrahím doesn't know his true name. 2) Ibrahím's stepsister's husband is still alive and is plotting against Ibrahím to either kill him or banish him to the edge of the world so he cannot interfere with his plans. Step 4: 1)Friendly - Ulric Myrtel, a grizzled 40 year old ex-cleric of Veiloaria. He is a human who knew Ibrahím and guided him into a life into the monk lifestyle due to Ibrahím's choices in life becoming a drunken homeless leach, he was the entire reason that Ibrahím became a monk however during Ibrahím's training Ulric became a wanderer eventually having a moment in his life that disgraced him enough he walked from his path of his deity and ignored Veiloaria entirely and became little more than a sell-sword whenever he wasn't drunk. 2)Friendly - Mirõt Gitch, a 25 year old Rogue racial archetypeFilcher. He is a half blind thief who Ibrahím literally ran into, unknown to Ibrahím, Mirõt stole Ibrahím's family ring given by his sister. Unfortunately Mirõt was being pursued for the theft of a solid gold broach, it dropped out of Mirõt's pocket as he ran away from Ibrahím. Being young took pity on Mirõt being a scrappy small person who looked like he was without food for weeks he took the broach from the ground and hid it in his pockets. He walked past Mirõt as he was being held by the authorites who couldn't find the broach and after he was taken in and cleared of involvement Ibrahím gave the broach back as long as he returned his sister's ring. Mirõt agreed and after that the two became friends and have remained friends to this day. 3)Hostile - Zova the Bane, a young and quick female rogue who relished in using poisons. She was often used as an assassin and was even sent to kill a mercenary who was staying in an inn near the closest town to Ibrahím's monastery which Ibrahím stayed in as a thanks for clearing the roads of highwaymen. A mercenary gave his room away to the monk which turned out to be the target. Zova broke in and Ibrahím gave her a fight she wasn't expecting, she couldn't even hit him but Ibrahím was able to stun her where she stood and then kicked her out the window, he next heard a loud thud and a crack before looking out to see no one was there however he saw an individual running away holding their shoulder. It was no secret she had a vendetta against the monk but she hasn't struck yet. Step 5: 1) Ibrahím's mother's hair being a beautiful golden blonde 2) Ibrahím despite having such important and strict vows and rules to undertake and keep up he will never, ever go near rotten meat whether it be the smell or the sight. 3) Every night Ibrahím will take 40 steps to the East from whatever he camp he has, while doing so he will restate his vows and prayers. If he has killed someone that day he will pray for their soul whether he knew their name or not. 4) Since Ibrahím has taken a vow of chains he shortly after taking the vow whittled a back scratcher out of wood as he knew that he would need it at one point and so far he has been right.

Ibrahím's eyes teared up as he felt touched but also terrified for Estelle. He folded the letter and began thinking as he walked through the monastery thinking to himself I haven't seen Estelle for ten years, I thought she forgot about me...Well I can't leave these kids alone. I have to let my brothers know I am going to leave, family still exists. Even my vows can't stop me protecting the innocent and these kids are innocent. He walked towards the elder monk and said "Brother, I must talk to you please. It is something of deep importance." The Elder nodded and closed the door behind them and sat in a mediative position and nodded to Ibrahím to continue. Ibrahím took a deep breath and said "I must leave the monastery. My stepsister's children are in deep trouble, their father is dead and their mother has been missing. I know I am yet to reach higher planes of enlightenment but I can't ignore my family. I am willing to take the vow of chains as penance for my actions. I shall leave in the morning thank you elder." The Elder angled his head towards an old pair of manacles hanging on the wall, Ibrahím is the first of the monastery to undertake the vow of chains in many years but he has made his choice. Ibrahím took the manacles off the wall and attached them to his arms and legs before leaving the room without a word from the Elder. Night's darkness was pushed away from the morning's rays it was the sign of Ibrahím's leaving. He bowed to each of his brothers and began to walk out of the monastery with his backpack and his training the only thing welcoming him is the wilderness and a long road to a path he has almost no information about what is to come. He bows for the last time to his monastery and he begins his travels.

Personality and Background   Personality: Despite her appearance, Kyla has a very kind heart with a strong personality and sense for justice. She often leads thru example, relying on her abilities to speak louder than words or prayer. When she is not practicing her faith and swordplay or cleansing the land from evil in the name of Iomedae, Kyla enjoys music and dancing. On occasion she can be found in court dancing and sometimes she is seen dancing while working her swordsmanship skills. Background: Kyla was born of noble birth. Her rich family is just one in a long line of noble families living in the Heights. She is the only female sibling and also the youngest in her family. When she was a child, her family was tasked to travel and serve the current King of Korvosa as an envoy of their emperor. This was an important task for opening relations and trade between the two countries. Her family in Korvosa consists of her parents, father Lord Jahauul who also served as the Kings personal armor smith, her mother Lady Beatrice along with 3 older brothers, Sir Kahn, Sir Silvendreth, and Sir Elmendarr. As she grew, due to her status, she was required to learn etiquette and dance. Her brothers were more of the aristocrat type and studied law. Her brothers would always bully her around. But despite her brothers and the necessary training that was required for one of noble birth, she always felt an urge to prove herself to her brothers by upholding law/order and justice thru the arts of faith and swordplay. By the time she was old enough, she began training as a Paladin and studied religion with swordplay. She spent many years in the church training and servicing the community. During her pass time, she always lent a helping hand out around the town. These actions earned her a reputation among common folk. Then several years later, after proving herself in combat thru a great display of skills and swordsmanship, she was granted knighthood and joined the Kings Elite Guard. Soon after her promotion, her brother Sir Kahn went missing. At first her family thought it was a kid napping until later no request was ever made. There were rumors of his death and that he may have been too involved with one of the local drug lords. After several months passed and no information was found, her father stopped searching. However, Kyla does not believe that her brother is dead, nor could he perform such a dis honor to the family. Kyla to this day insists that he is still alive somewhere and hopes to one day find him. Kyla served several years on the Kings guard. Over time Lady Kyla picked up some rumors around her missing brother. Confused that her brother is not a child and wondered how it could be true, it is the only information she has to go on. After she acquired the information, she sought for sanction to continue her investigation and piece together the truth. Mainly because they felt little need to press an investigation, the Kings Elite Guard and Church granted Lady Kyla the right to continue her investigation. In addition to the sanction she was granted the power to pass judgement on those she finds affiliated and guilty in the manner she deems. This decision was not taken lightly and was mainly granted due to their belief that the search would not amount to anything, but also because of her nobility, paladinship and duty to the guard. As far as the church of Iomedae is concerned, they view this desire and request as an Oath of Vengeance and as such it is fully supported.

RP Sample:   While returning from lunch, Lady Kyla witnessed an argument between a small boy and a scruffy looking man. The man was bullying the child Boy, how many times have I told you! The shaken child responded I forgot, I'm sorry! Lady Kyla approached the man. My, my, what do we have here? The man looked shocked as he was not expecting a member of the guard to be in the area, let alone that guard being Lady Kyla. Oh, it is nothing Lady Kyla, just a small dispute between father and son. Lady Kyla raised an eyebrow Oh? Then boy shouted out. He is not my father, please help me, this man wants me to deliver drugs. The man quickly drew a dagger and was going to throw it at the boy. Foolish child! Lady Kyla knew that the mans action alone proved the child was not lying. With lightning reflexes due to her reactionary skills Lady Kyla was able to draw her weapon and move between the two. The man threw his dagger and it clanked as it bounced off her armor. With a swift and skilled motion, Lady Kyla used the hilt of her sword and successfully knocked the man out with a single blow to his head. She took a moment to comfort the child. What is your name? Boy replied, I am Johhy Oxford, Lady Kyla. Lady Kyla replied with a bright smile, You should be alright now, run home now and stay out of trouble. Remember don't talk to strangers. The boy gave her a big hug Thank you. then took off running home. Then she turned to the man and began to tie him up and prepare him for transport. The man awoke as his binding we tightened. Ah, my head. Please let me go, I can pay you well. While finishing the binding, Lady Kyla responded Is that so? Well, no need to worry about your head, soon you will be charge you with attempted murder of an innocent child, assault on the Kings Guard and attempting to bribe an official.

3. Cressida Kroft, Field Marshal of the Korvosan Guard, whom Shadfrar petitioned daily for assistance in solving his lover's murder. Despite his unusual heritage and persistance she found the case unremarkable and did not notice when Shadfrar stopped coming...

1. Shadfrar has a habit of "using the first level feat "Harrowed" and rolling bones instead of the mechanics of selecting from a physical harrow deck"rolling the bones" when he is unsure about the future.
2. His face is almost permanently painted with a skull, to the extent that most people have never seen him without it.
3. As with most Shoanti, Shadfrar is somewhat distrustful of outsiders and disdainful of progress. He reserves the perjorative title of tshamek for those he finds particularly exasperating or offensive.

Stretching down, Shadfrar scooped a handful of coarse red sand from the arid desert floor. The breeze did nothing to cool the heat as he slowly let the contents drain from his hand, blowing a trail behind him. Above, the crescent moon shone brightly in a clear sky. Before him stood a powerful and lithe young woman, proudly displaying her warrior prowess. Shadlah! She was looking to him for guidance and, as usual, her attention nearly overwhelmed him with ardour. The squeak and click of nearby bats seemed like an omen, with the prominent webbed-wing tattoo dominating the left side of her face.

"Tell me, Spirit-walker, should I go wit' you into the South?"

Forcing his gaze from her, he looked to the sky for a moment and took a deep breath to settle himself before drawing his bones from the Gargoyle-skin pouch at his hip - the intricately carved runes a comforting feel against his hands. With a blow he cast them to the ground at her feet, bending to examine their spread. Destruction, pain, malevolence! Shuddering, he recoiled in shock as the images assaulted him. Dust, heat, dryness... a snake lunging towards him - its fangs bared - yellow and black scales glinting in the sun. "Yaaargh!" The blind man, the scarred, a man screaming into the night as he chewed the raw flesh of his victim. The images came fast and faster, becoming more overwhelming until he found himself on his knees, screaming, holding his head.

Forcing himself from his knees he saw the runes glowing brightly, stronger than ever before, the bones burning up against all reason and crumbling to ash before his eyes. The wind whipping around them all, the sudden sandstorm and the twisting spout of the cyclone drove the tribe before them as they ran for safety, but not the Spirit-walker! Stepping forward he stood strong against the tide, wrapping Shadlah in his arms as tide threatened to overwhelm them, a shimmering ball seeming to hover around them for a moment before they went out of sight.

When the dust settled the two stood in a perfect circle of flat ground, completely unharmed.

"If you go South you will find pain and death." With that, he walked away...

With a scalp that's 'Bald as a babies bum' as he likes to say, yet his ample blond beard shows his true hair color. A smile and a twinkle to his eye disarm the common tavern goer and a promise of a good deal entices even the stingiest of buyers. Clothed in fine fabrics and furs, his charm and presence can barely go unnoticed, and the few sacks hanging off his belt must surely contain large quantities of coin. He doesn't carry any backpack or even any heavy weapons aside from a thin rapier and a short sword, both scabbards dangling from his belt and ordained with purple fur. All the better to pursue his own private interests. 4) Blainn never fights fair, and firmly believes that "if you're in a fair fight, you're doing something wrong". 5) Desires to be a mercenary for hire, and also sell poisons to the highest bidder, without really thinking where they go to use. One of the contributing causes of death might have been some of the initial stages of poisons that Blainn was working on, but he refuses to accept it and firmly speaks out against the criminal underworld as being the true source of his brother's death. She has known him as Blainn only, never knowing about his past, and thus not being able to speak against him in any way other than being a stingy miser with his coin and having a strong sense of Pride that should not be crossed. 2) Kreten, who's true name is likely something more upstanding but Blainn refuses to call him anything else, is a dealer of various hard to find substances that walk the grey line between brewery ingredients or new alchemical mixtures for poisons. Sometimes that line is just completely ignored and Kreten knows exactly how deadly the things he brings to Blainn are. Fortunately, he has the sense enough to accept the coin he's paid and keep quiet about it, otherwise he knows he's likely to put to test the next batch of poisons personally. 3) Glimmer, a gnome sorcerer of some prowess, has held a grudge against Blainn for quite awhile and has caused more than a few problems in trade deals by magically influencing the buyers coming to order more shipments. Sabotaging the brewery business is merely only the surface of his hatred, as he is secretly planning on attempting to kill Blainn in the future when the time is right. He was orphaned young, and has been dealing with the pain of loss after Blainn took a contract to kill his mother for some unknown reason. He doesn't actually know the specifics behind why Blainn killed his mother, but for the act, he has personally vowed to exact revenge. Step 5: Describe three memories, mannerisms, or quirks that your character has. They don't have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor. 1) Blainn grew up in comfort, but nevertheless still sought out shady friends and activities. A number of his close friends when he was younger have died to street violence and overdose through the years. It wasn't until his brother's death that the path he led really hit him personally. 2) He was kicked out of his home, his parents not wanting to deal with a rebellious son, when he was only 19. Stealing the family brewery recipe for quality micro brew, which he'd practiced making as an apprentice for his father, gave him a marketable product that he'd survive on and barely make enough coin to support himself. Having spent a few years as an alcoholic, he'd lived in squalor and filth with other 'low lives' and through this made a number of shady acquaintances before rehabilitating himself through sheer force of will. 3) Still harboring the thirst for overindulgence, Blainn lets go every once in awhile, getting drunk and reckless, or heading to a brothel and spending coin freely. It is more of a psychological addiction than a true compulsion, for it could just as easily be food that satiates the urges he feels. Borderline hedonist, he's had years of practice in exercising self control and as such only lets his passions out in small doses anymore, attempting to keep away from such indulgences of the grotesque nature while still knowing how much he'd enjoy it if the situation came up.   Walking down the street, Blainn wished more eyes were on him. The center of attention and the love and adoration of others was something far better than any drug. He should know. He'd partaken of a number of drugs in his younger years, but always found the strength to never get addicted. Smiling as he walked past a few store fronts, he decided to make his presence known in the community and start generating some income. This was going to be a new life in a new town. The old ways behind. "Greetings!" he called to a barkeep of the inn. The best place he could start with, in his mind, the largest inn. Also a likely spot for many of the citizens to come drown their sorrows under the current rule. The place probably went through beer faster than the lechers coin in a brothel. "Ayun, what can I do ya fer?" the balding human behind the counter asked, wiping out another mug and hanging it from a rack along the wall. The shelves above the glasses were lined with a variety of labels which Blainn noted were mostly full. The top shelf liquor was not bought often, or they went through it very quickly. "The name's Blainn Goldbrow and I'm a brewmaster new to town. I'm looking to introduce the community to a secret family recipe and as such, I'm willing to let you have a case of my brew free of charge. Samples, of course!" Laying the smiles on thick, Blainn knew that if he couldn't find a buyer in the next 2 or 3 cases he handed out, he'd be stealing and begging for coin to get his next meal. He was risking a lot to strive for more, but it reminded him so much of his gambling hall days that he could almost feel the lace of adrenaline trickling down his spine at the thought of a new form of gambling. Economy was a strange thing and business skills were something he was going to have to learn fast. Having a few coins left, he put down a few silver on the bar counter and ordered some of the finer beers that the bartender had on hand so that they might taste comparison with his own. After a few slow sips, the bartender nodded, "Aye, you're a strange one, Mr. Goldbrow, but your brew is true. I can negotiate prices after talking to the owner." as he glanced back at the few remaining silver pieces on the counter. Blainn, not missing the glance, "Ah, it's good to be welcomed into the community. Please take this tip, merely a thanks for letting me try the competition!" He raised his glass, knowing he'd paid fully four times the price of his drink, but knowing that greased palms bought more friends than the best smile at times. "I'm likely to return with a number of cases, and have a standard rate. Will that suffice?" he asked the barkeep, "Ah, pardon my manners, I forgot to ask your name..." Smirking, the older man replied "Aye, you did. Presumptuous. Mark of desperation that is. Still, this is quality and my customers will pay for it. I will take the cases, at a discount, but you'll have more ready in the near future, yes? And the name's Jrabaar." The keep scooped up the coin on the counter before taking the case of beers and setting it down behind the counter as well. "The day is young, Mr. Goldbrow. There's much you might find in this town. Go and make your profits and come back tonight with the rest. We'll discuss your rate then." Desperation? Blainn burned at the comment, but kept his smile firmly in place, "Till tonight then..." Tipping a nod at the barkeep, he walked out of the inn, thoughts drifting towards retribution. The nerve of him, calling me desperate! He had no right, and he will have to pay or make amends. I can take it out in my rate, charge a higher profit margin for myself. We shall see who has the last laugh. For now, I must bide my time. His thoughts continued yet he walked the streets with a light skip to his step, a smile, and a twinkle in his eye. In time, I will have the information on his whereabouts, and I will take revenge for you my brother. If only we had not had so much Blackcaps, but still that batch of Shivers should have been fine... Stormclouds brewed behind his sky blue eyes. And yet, he still smiled while greeting strangers, and tossing a few coppers in a beggars cup.

Physical :
Small even for a gnome. Just 2ft 6in and skinny as a rail. Hair the color of yellow, almost but more of gold, covers his head worn down to the shoulders. Deep reddish eyes nearly gray, and a long scar on his left cheek running from his nose up to past his eye. A very light beard, a little darker then his hair hardly covers the chin and is trimmed short. Pants of brown and soft leather boots with a green tunic covers his light amour. Over this he is covered with a full two sided mantle, one side very blue and the other side a deep gray almost black. Hidden under are his mace and gear.

 

Personality:
Immersing himself in his studies he became quiet, yet very assured of himself. He speaks little but softly. Inner anger fills him from his younger years seen only in his eyes. He still struggles to control his emotions. Outwardly he smiles and helps others especially children as the old one helped him.

 

Background:
He was the 8th child, the fifth son. A runt. As he grew up his brothers and their friends gave him a hard time. Fights happened often and although he never won he almost held his own. In the evenings he liked to sit and listen to the elders tell stories of their days gone by thus learning how they solved many problems or trials of their youth. He learned helping others was a good thing and started to do so, and captured the attention of an old one that instructed him in Diplomacy. There he met a young lady, Aireonna, twice his age, that he liked. She treated him as a person and they would practice together until her brother Alarin arrived. He took exception to Quabar often putting him down. After a go around with her brother he went for a walk to cool down. Then one day, after a difficult class he could take no more from Alarin and let loose a spell. This was seen by the elder and he was taken aside. "You have applied yourself to your studies and done well. There are some things you need to know. Do you remember your father?" Indeed he did. He remembered the magic tricks he could do, and the sadness of his mother when he left. "Your father was a sorcerer and not well liked here by the gnomes. He did not practice good magic like the gnomes, he had no problem hurting people. Remember when he was here he stayed indoors with you and your mother. Some thought he was evil, but then how could he love your mother? He was not evil, he knew he would die long before your mother or you. He left out of love. Not even your mother knows this. You are his son, and have studied to be good, use it wisely!"
His teacher and master one day could not be found. As an honored elder this was of great concern to Quabar and many elders in the village. Everyone was looking for him. Then a question came up. Who was the last person to see him? It was Quabar! The evening before. Quabar admitted they had stayed up to discuss some of his lessons, but about midnight they had turned in. After several days finger began to point at Quabar. Rumors started. People looked at Quabar as he walked by and they moved away from him. He was guilty even if their was no proof. He may as well have been jailed.
Aireonna had studied with him and they had practiced for hours their craft. She was not sure what to believe. She was sure he respected his teacher and would not harm him. So what happened?
Days became weeks, the elder was not found and Quabar was alone. Nobody would even talk to him. The people were sure he had done something terrible. He had done something.
A merchant came. He did so monthly or there about to peddle him pots and pans. Aireonna needed some small dishes and was looking over his wares. "Why is that guy avoided like a plague?" he asked. Aireonna explained what had happened several weeks ago. "That so? Did you get word of the elder that was found about a week or two ago? He was wearing strange clothing, like your elders. Some animal had attacked and killed him. It happened a weeks travel from here."
Quabar was not the same. His teacher was gone and his people shunned him. It was time to leave. Besides strange things had started to happen to him. At first he thought it was stress. Then that someone was trying to drive him mad. But it still happens. Even with the news from the merchant. Funny little things. Like someone was trying to get his attention. But who? And why? This was all to much!
Upon leaving his home in The Great Forest after 50 years and beginning his travels Quabar sees a new world. A world very different then where he grew up. A world very much in need, not as peaceful as his home. He was able to help people wherever he went in return for food and lodging. He practiced his profession and developed his skills and at times received help from others. He spent 26 years helping others and learning. Years ago, he never kept count, He arrived in Korvosa, broke and looking for work, of any kind. With his effort he found a room, next to the library, where he spent most of his time studying. He made some friends, but not many. Now 20 some years later....
