I was shocked as Aurora threatened to kill our host, and possibly all of us along with him. was this woman truly insane? If it had been anyone else, I would have believed it a bluff, but her previous reckless behavior made me think she would actually do it. before I could do anything to stop her, her provocations elicited another response from the entity inhabiting Mayuri.
Oguun’s theory of Almavalesh being controlled was proven correct as our employer screamed and expelled pure darkness which enveloped everything and everyone around him. there was no chance for me to run. In desperation I sent Nephala to fly away in the hope that she could escape my fate and possibly render assistance from outside the darkness, similar to how Rolen had his familiar in the waking world.
"I... I didn't intend to kill him? A-are wizards that fragile?" Aurora asked uncertain, looking around the complete darkness. "They blinded us! Prepare!" The bride didn't make note of the change in sensation, assuming that it was her body reacting to fear. She raised one blade in a defensive manner, expecting an attack. At the same time, she lowered the other one, trying to tap the ground with it, to use it as a walking stick and orientate in the surroundings.
Oguun hadn't quite reached Mayuri when Aurora offered violence to Almavalesh. He turned to watch. It was an interesting ploy, and one that produced immediate results. The conjecture of the mage himself being compromised appeared to be confirmed, although it remained to be seen whether the true source of the malign influence was memory-Mayuri, Almavalesh, or something else hidden in this constructed world.
The shadows rolled toward Oguun. It was always wise to prepare for the unknown. He laid a hand over his amulet and cast Resistance on selfspoke a word.

When he heard Aurora’s shocking threat, Geghard slightly shifted his weight and his grip, preparing himself to intervene. The woman had repeatedly surprised him since the dream began; she was reckless at best, wantonly destructive at worst. Geghard did not doubt her willingness to burn everything down, literally and figuratively, and he had no intention of permitting her.
But then Almavalesh collapsed, seemingly before Aurora could harm him. Geghard reflexively moved to help, but stopped short at the emergence of the living darkness. Another attack from the mysterious entity? Regardless, Geghard had to move quickly to save himself. He back-pedaled, but not nearly quickly enough. The darkness quickly grabbed him, numbing, paralyzing…perhaps he would now find the answer to life’s greatest mystery.

If one of the adventurers had ever made an experience with drowning, this was it. Except there was no water pressure, no trouble breathing. Only nothing. Rolen had to suppress his instincts which were telling him to wake up from this nightmare, but curiosity persevered. Once again Ara let him know through their telepathic link that nothing much was happening inside the living world, except for Almavalesh sitting in his cushioned chair convulsing, rocking back and forth unconsciously before his shaking died down and he began to breathe calmly again. With his limited knowledge of medicine, Rolen could conclude that there was nothing he could do for him right now. If anything could be done for his employer, then it was probably more worthwhile to pursue the secrets of this dream realm. And so it was that each of the adventurers was swallowed by the darkness and pulled into a state of sensory deprivation. For a moment, all that existed were just their bodies, no more cobbled street that they were standing on, no sounds of a lively Westhaven, not even air that carried any kind of smells. Derek called out mentally to his familiar, to learn if Nephala had managed to escape the darkness, but for a moment there was no connection. Oguun spoke a prayer to shield his body against anything that might come, yet the all-encompassing darkness swallowing him seemed to have been it for the moment. Aurora expected an attack, Geghard expected death, but for a few seconds, nothing further happened.
The absence of reality or even surreality gave the adventurers a few solitary moments with themselves. Calling out to the others went unheard by anybody, and moving their limbs at least felt right, but without any other objects around there was no feeling of treading on anything, no resistance. Only the familiar weight of the adventurers' clothes and equipment and their own beating hearts let them know that they still existed. There was no reliable way to tell for how long the adventurers stayed separated in their lightless dream void, but eventually, the sense of limbo ended with a snap. There was no particular impact or momentum, but from one moment to the other their surroundings sprung back into existence. Aurora had never even realized how it could have happened after feeling like she was standing up and feeling around with her sword, but just like all the other adventurers, she found herself lying on a cold, hard and even floor. The air was stuffy, letting them know that they were somewhere inside, but as their eyes were opened as wide as they would, there was still only darkness around. Breathing noises seemed to come from every direction, and only Derek was able to understand immediately that he was into an enclosed space with seven other beings, where their living sounds ranged from calmly breathing up to strained panting. And just as fast came the realization that Nephala was with him again. Though when he asked her telepathically, it seemed like the conjured raven was just as blind as the young necromancer right now.
"Is this it? Are we dead?!" The first to frightenedly speak into the darkness was the familiar voice of Grimly Packer. Among the panting sounds, his were probably the least controlled as he appeared almost panicked. And just as this gave the other adventurers the time to realize that they were still alive and that they'd seemingly been transported somewhere else but were still together, they were only given enough time to get up off the floor before a window of sorts seemed to open up. Right ahead in mid-air, slightly elevated above even Oguun's head and a few feet ahead in the darkness. It was not a large window by any means, just the size of a single head. But as the party could see the silhouette of bars reaming the only visible space, none of the dim light behind the window seemed to fall into their room, which aside from the window was still pure darkness. And then a familiar face appeared inside of the frame behind the bars. "Welcome, adventurers. Settle down for me for a moment. At my behest, please." As the barred opening and the face behind it were the only things that the adventurers could visually perceive, they could recognize Mayuri's voice as well as her semblance, and now the regally smiling noble had made herself the focal point of the lightless room. Her voice was just as amused as it was calm.
"You've created a lot of turbulence by coming here. And no, you're not dead, Grimly Packer. Just forgotten and out of the way to cause further trouble for the moment." The placidly smiling visage of Mayuri seemed to peer into the room as if she could see the adventurers, but even as she kept her smile, the amusement in her voice gave way to a gentle strictness. "Simply put, your little bride has caused a little too much mischief, to the point that it has started to become unseemly." As Mayuri peered through the slightly elevated bars, Aurora realized that somehow she was now making eye contact with the other woman, even if she herself couldn't even see her own hands or the two sabers in them. "So as a peaceful solution I've decided that instead of letting you traipse about and set a few more things aflame just for fun, we're now going to simply talk it out. There are no secrets here anyways, if you want to know of Alma's day that he lost, I can simply tell you about it." The noblewoman's tone was both calm and meant to be soothing. No traces of how the adventurers had seen her during the incursion remained and now she seemed to be extending a peace offering of sorts. Having been given no time to ever discuss amongst themselves since they'd been rushed from one surreal moment into another, after they had magically fallen into this lightless prison the wife of their employer was now awaiting their responses.
Feel free to pick up the action as you please. As stated, your characters seem to have arrived in an enclosed space, and now Mayuri has shown herself to be peacefully talking with you. The window that you can see her through is not that far away from you and only an arm's length above eye level if your characters are standing. Your characters start prone but can stand up without any issues.
Your characters are mechanically blinded from perceiving anything inside this room with their eyes, but if they want to, your characters can explore the room by touch. Derek is the only one that can say with certainty that there are just as many breathing sounds as you have people in the party, the rest of you simply know that you're not alone until you talk to each other. To describe your character's movements, feel free to use cardinal directions. Assume that Mayuri is in the east. Your characters are all somewhere in the middle of the room on the floor.
Aurora didn't expect to suddenly appear on a stone floor of some sort of cell in a complete darkness, with only the face of Mayuri looking at her through the bars. The bride slowly stood up, puffed out her chest and raised her chin with a smirk. The other woman was probably the only one, who could see it, but she was still proud of herself.
"See? My plan worked. I annoyed that creature enough to make it just talk to us." She said, looking to the sides, though failing to spot anyone. "Thanks to me, we can skip all the boring and unnecessary walking, getting straight to the point... Though, watch out for whatever she says, she is a fellow noble after all... Are you?" Aurora looked straight at the woman again. "Should we even refer to you as 'Mayuri'? Are you some mind-construct inspired by that person? Personification of Alma's subconsciousness?"
The darkness took Oguun. He noted that it was much like the interstice between leaving the world of Westhaven and entering Almavalesh's memory. As sensation returned, he wondered if he had been transported within Almavalesh's memory or into another's memory altogether. Oguun's mind began racing.
"Is this it? Are we dead?!" Others were here then, Grimly at least.
A barred window formed with the mate's face behind it. "You've created a lot of turbulence by coming here." Here. Still in the mage's mind then, if the mate or not-mate spoke true. The word "forgotten" nagged at the cleric, but he couldn't quite place why. But the party wasn't dead and he still felt his armor and his mace. The mate was either unable to dispose of them or required them alive. And there were bars at the window. The Mayuri-thing felt some need for separation.
"Simply put, your little bride has caused a little too much mischief, to the point that it has started to become unseemly." Aurora then had somehow provoked the Mayuri-thing to this. She did seem to have a talent for provocation, but how precisely? Breaking windows? Starting fires, threatening the mage? All these things, perhaps. Perhaps something else.
Aurora's voice sounded in the darkness. It was safe to assume all the others were here then. Oguun rose to a crouch, tucked his mace away, felt around himself to make sure he wouldn't trip over someone else. The Mayuri-thing mentioned the mage's lost time. His forgotten day. She had called the party forgotten too. But they had not forgotten themselves or each other. Perhaps she had made the mage forget the party.
"Yes. No secrets. Tell us of the mage's lost day. That is why we are here." What the Mayuri-thing said might or might not be true, but it would at least reveal what she wanted the party to believe. He moved east to directly below the window, where it would be difficult for the Mayuri-thing to see him even if she put her face to the bars, and felt for a wall or something like it beneath the window.

Still alive, after all. It's a start. And the others as well, it seemed. "Almavalesh?" Geghard asked into the darkness.
"Mayuri" had imprisoned them immediately after Aurora threatened her. Her dismissive talk of "mischief" and "turbulence" seemed just that; the timing suggested that the being did fear for her - its - physical safety. But just minutes ago Mayuri had seemed quite passive during the recent violence occurring all around her. Was she protecting something else?
Geghard left the conversation to the others for the present. While they talked, he drew a javelin, stepped toward the window, and slowly slid the butt of the missile between the bars, to test the window's reality without suggesting any aggression.

My heart raced as I was engulfed by blackness. Was this the end? would I die on my very first mission? I still felt myself. I still existed, but was I a ghost now? I still needed to breath. Ghosts didn’t breathe, did they? Then I heard the breathing of others around me. I wasn’t alone in this blackness. That only made me more frightened. Were there monsters here? I was about to cast my light spell so I could see my surroundings when Mayuri appeared.
From her words I gathered I was not dead, and that the others were here as well. That eased my anxiety, but only slightly for our situation was not good. This entity had managed to trap us, and we appeared to be at its mercy. But then she spoke of peaceful negotiations. I found that very suspicious. She had tried to kill us moments before. If she had the power to trap us like this, why did she need to negotiate with us? Couldn’t she just kill us? Maybe she couldn’t. maybe her control over this dream world wasn’t as complete as we thought. She was only coming to the table because violence hadn’t worked. she was afraid of us. At least I hoped so.
Aurora began talking and once again I found myself disliking her. She treated her insane behavior as a good thing. Honestly, I had never met a more childish, out of control person in my life.
Oguun was far more reasonable. He accepted our captors offer to tell us the events of the missing day, though I would be highly skeptical of anything this creature said. I kept my silence for the moment to hear her story.
The clamour of fighting slowly started to abate, for which Baka was most grateful. He’d never developed a taste for conflict. He’d heard often enough in his travels about the glories of battle, and listened, at least in part before nodding off, to many tales of great heroes defeating terrible foes. Certainly, in his travels, he’d even gotten into the odd scrap or two. However he was firmly of the mind that it just wasn’t for him.
The ring of clashing steel was an often rude shock to his head, drawing out the most inconvenient migraines whilst he was doing his best to negotiate a hangover. It also moved so quickly. Honestly, he wasn’t entirely sure why everyone was rushing around so frantically to get themselves skewered on some spear or stuck with an arrow. He much preferred slow, methodical approaches to most things, and getting in a fight didn’t really allow for that. Finally, he just wasn’t all that thrilled about the spilling of blood. It was an awful waste of life, in his book, and whilst there were plenty of ne’er do wells who needed a good bonk over the head, he still didn’t think there was any worth in ending a life.
He pondered that thought for a short while, paying little heed to those around him as they chatted away about something or another. As he considered it, a sense of alarm slowly crept over him. His shell had taken a hit, he remembered now feeling the shock run through his body as fungal matter had been torn free of his carapace. Reaching back, brow furrowed, his hand ran over the patch of shell where the blade had landed. He sniffed, his fingers feeling the hardness of shell with little else upon it.
The growths would come back, he knew, they always did. Still, he felt keenly the loss of several small mycelial organisms that had been growing on that particular patch of shell. He knew it was most likely the smoke talking, but he was certain he shared something with the growths on his shell, as if they were just as aware of him as he was of them, and losing them was like, at least to him, losing a cousin or a sibling. The mushrooms on his shell would grow back, but would they be the same? Would new ones take their place, or the surrounding ones grow in to fill the void?
He’d lived with the growths for such a long while, yet still understood so little about them, or his relationship with them. He knew though, that they were far more than just a convenient patch of narcotic fungi growing on his shell. They had a life, a strange sort of awareness that seemed to hover on the edge of his own consciousness, and at times he felt as if perhaps they were trying to communicate directly, and he was just unable to hear.
Perhaps the price for keeping out the… other… voices was that he had deafened himself to his fungal friends as well. A steep price, but probably still worth it.
His reverie was interrupted before he could consider that last thought any longer when suddenly the world seemed to go utterly dark. He’d no earthly idea of just how long he’d been standing in the middle of the street lost in his thoughts, but no doubt it had been substantial. It was not the first time his mind had wandered internally, nor would it be the last, but there was a sneaking suspicion that perhaps this time was not the most ideal. In fact, as his mind began to consider the new problem of this encompassing darkness, he was pretty certain that he’d been doing something important.
When the voice of his newfound friend, Mr Grimly Packer, enquired as to their state of life or lack thereof, the fogginess of his memory lifted and he recalled what they were about. Of course, that memory was likely to have been jogged by the emergence of Mayuri’s visage at the newly appeared window.
Baka shifted slightly, feeling his shell bump against someone else.
“Sorry,” he muttered in a quiet drawl, before cautiously finishing the movement so that he could sit down.
No point standing about in the darkness if a chat was about to be had, after all. As he sat, hopefully not bumping anyone else, he considers what tools he has at his disposal that might alleviate their current situation and decides that for now, he has little to offer. Indeed, as both Oguun and Aurora ask their questions, Baka finds he has nothing more to add for the time being, and so waits expectantly for some form of answer from this ‘Mayuri’.
A thought does come to him in that instant though, as he waits for the conversation to ensue, and so he clears his throat.
“Does anybody mind if I smoke?” He says, as the sound of a pipe being is heard in the small, confined space, a potent, acrid smell following shortly after.

Slowly the adventurers situated themselves with the strange new circumstances that they found themselves in, but in this dream world, there was really no telling what had to be expected. And while their party had been transported into some kind of ever-dark prison, they seemingly had left Almavalesh behind as he didn't respond to Geghard calling out to him. And while the adventurers could only guess what kind of intentions the being that was seemingly pulling the strings had with them, there was a shared understanding among the adventurers that they had to at least hear Mayuri out, no matter how well they would trust her word in the end. As Aurora was the first to demand to know about the being's identity and Oguun added that they wanted to be told about their quest's subject, at least half of the party settled down in the midst of whatever kind of room this was and waited to listen. Initially only Geghard and Oguun began to move about, carefully moving forward as they couldn't see their way.
"Mayuri will be fine, Aurora. And really, noble-born as I might be, there's really no reason not to believe anything that I will tell you. That would be pointless now that we've come here, wouldn't it?" There was gentle condescension in Mayuri's voice as she spoke to Aurora, but then she swiftly moved past the insult that had been made towards her person. "Alma's lost day... Where do I begin?" Since the human woman was still the only vision that wasn't obstructed by darkness, her gaze scanning the group as she contemplated her words easily gave away that at least she could see when everybody else couldn't. Baka lighting his pipe went completely uncommented as she continued. "I believe that Alma has already told you the version of events as they happened, but I believe that you'll need to hear it from me as well since he's the one afflicted."
It was at that point that Geghard's advance had led him to the invisible stair that seemed to lead up towards Mayuri's point of observation. For a moment the investigator faltered as he treaded onto the unexpected topology, but as a master of the spear he quickly refound his balance. With careful steps he climbed up the short stairs which led him up to Mayuri's eye level, and the adventurers waiting below could now see Geghard's silhouette as he moved in front of their view at the noblewoman. It appeared as if a shadow had stood up from the ground and had gained mass, and the indistinct person moving before the window was hardly recognizable as Geghard to them. Mayuri paused for a moment as she watched Geghard slide his javelin between the bars, where he found purchase without any kind of foul play. "Did that satisfy your curiosity, Geghard Van?" She wore a bit of a sarcastic smile, but it faded away just the next moment as she returned to more of a serene expression. In the same time, Oguun had felt his way to the butt of the stairs as well, having made his way about the ground that had seemed mostly even. Now he had reached the wall where the ground was a bit more earthy, but the wall that the githzerai found was solid stone with many fugues outlining a multitude of bricks. Again it supported the idea that this might be some kind of dungeon, but where Oguun had walked it was mostly empty space.
"Anyways, here is the short of it. After we had made it to the market that beautiful day, we did just some normal gallivanting and browsing through whatever stands came our way. It was really nothing uncommon at all until we made the acquaintance of this one adventurer that had come far, far from the east. Even speaking relative to the old continent. He spoke of his broken heart, or more the courage that had left him during a particularly gruesome adventure that he outlived. Now as my husband is somewhat of a healer of souls, there really was no other outcome than that he agreed to help the poor man. His name was Lee, and he led us to the house which he had acquired with the means he had brought over the ocean and what gold he had earned around these parts. And on his sickbed is where Alma must have gone wrong. While he could be considered a high-ranking magician and Alma is certainly a master of his craft, the way his magic manipulates minds something must have gone wrong during the seance. He started sweating and fell unconscious, and it was me and this Lee that had to carry him home. At least the adventurer told me that the procedure made him find his heart again... But afterwards Alma had forgotten what had happened since the morning." Mayuri regrettably shook her head as she seemed to recall how the events had played out.
In regards to Geghard's attempt, it does appear like the window is a barred opening in what's seemingly a door at the top of the stairs. The window seems closeable only from the other side. Looking at the frame, the door appears to be sturdy wood.
Otherwise, I don't have anything new to instruct for this scene yet, it's still going strong.
I'll simply use the free space in this section to point out how I'm loving the RP of this group! Great job everybody!
Aurora noticed that Geghard's shadow was able to poke his weapon through the barred window. "So we can stab her... If we go for the eyes, then... No, this creature has too much control over this place for it to work out... Maybe attack her and wake up before she reacts? How difficult would it be to wake up?" Some thoughts passed through the bride's head.
"Hm, if what Mayuri said is true..." Aurora lInsight 15ooked her in the eyes, trying to feel any doubt or hidden intent. "... then I think we don't have much more to do here. However, I would like you to share the location of this Lee's home. I want to hear this story from at least one more source."
The girl slowly begun making her way to one of the walls, using her weapon as a walking stick to not trip on something. She would feel safer with her back on a hard surface. "Have something similar happen to him before? Is the act of entering dreams strenuous for the body?"

"Mayuri," said Geghard, "I have a few questions as well. How did you come to have so much power here, within your husband's memory, under your husband's spell? You seem very comfortable with the facts of your awareness and control here; it doesn't seem a surprise to you.
"By the way, where is your husband - or his avatar? What have you done with him? He did not respond to me. Should I conclude that he is not here, or that he is incapacitated?"
Geghard continued, almost as if just thinking aloud. "What are your goals, here? We are here escorting your husband, at his request. Ask him. Does that compromise your interests in some way? If your issue was just that we were endangering the environment...well, you might have spoken up before attempting to kill us. And if that is your only concern, why don't you just keep this woman, and allow the rest of us to go? We were all strangers before a few hours ago. If you tell us what you want out of this situation, then maybe we can actually help you."

Oguun continued methodically working his way along the walls, listening all the while. He had no idea what a broken heart was or how one might be repaired, but Aurora and Geghard's questions concerning the Mayuri-thing seemed incisive. Her control over what Almavalesh had felt was his own construct was not at all reassuring, and her actions were somewhat at odds with her words.
"If your mate has never before been similarly afflicted following a procedure, we must assume this Lee's condition was exceptional and somehow transferable. Show us his memories of Lee. Show us your memories too since his are known to be unreliable." Though he had little hope that this place would behave like a physical plane, Oguun tugged at a protruding brick.
