The Wandering Bard (Tips for New Players)

Greetings and salutations.

This is the New Gamers section of RPG Crossing, RPGX for short, and the home of the New Players Solo Game. The Staff here has established the NPSG as a way to allow one on one solo games between new to site players and veteran site members. The games will include character creation, in game conversations, simple site tools, and basic combat mechanics can be learned.

A variety of game systems are available for use in the NPSG, simply look through the application threads and sign up for the system of your choice.

The following posts in this thread will feature various tips to help you in site navigation and posting possibilities, and a list of folks that have completed the NPSG. Thanks for joining us, and welcome to the site.

Posting/BBCode Tips
In all code examples, any parenthesis "( )" used in tags should be replaced with brackets "[ ]".

In-Game Font FormattingIn nearly every game, you will find the following formatting 'rules' to be standard while actually playing the game. Follow these standards, and any DM will be pleased indeed.

In-Character Formats
Speech: Use "Say button" or Bold type and "Quotes".
Example: "Fear not young maiden...."
Thoughts: Use italic type.
Example: Hmm, I wonder if this place serves grog....
Narrative: Use regular type.
Example: Crouching behind the bush, his hands on his axe, Gurgg the Orc felt like slaughtering something.
Languages other than Common: Varies, but typically use a different color for each language.
Example: Speaking to the masses, Venosh said I love you all!, but to the elves he specifically said Erai'le'yifal, hifdelish!
Out-of-Character, but Within a Game Post
OOC: This is really up for grabs. Most DMs will tell you this one, but it tends to be either using a different color with the letters OOC in front of that section, or use a Fieldset box (see below). For the newbie games, feel free to just type OOC in front of your out of character section, unless your specific DM instructs otherwise.

Fieldset Boxes (like this one!)Fieldset boxes are helpful to clearly set text, rolls, etc. from everything else in a post.

Example: (FIELDSET="Title") Text meant to be clearly set apart from everything else.(/FIELDSET)

Result:
TitleText meant to be clearly set apart from everything else.

Hyperlinks/URL TagThey're URLs...what more can I say?

Example: (URL="http://www.rpgcrossing.com/cmps_index.php")A link to the RPG Crossing Home Page(/URL)

Result: A link to the RPG Crossing Home Page

Secret TextSecret text is useful when you only went certain users to see what you have typed.

Example: (SECRET=user1, user2, user3)Shh! This is secret text!(/SECRET)
Note: if you use the 'auto-tag' feature on the posting box, you will still need to enter in usernames manually. Also, to secret something to your DM, you can just use DM instead of using their username. If you don't put any usernames in, it will look like secret text, but everyone can see it.

Result of one secreted only to me (you will see nothing but perhaps a blank line):

Result of one "secreted" to all viewers (just so you see what it looks like):

Spoiler BoxesSpoiler boxes are useful for hiding something you want everyone to be able to see, but want to make sure they REALLY want to see it. Like, if you decide to post what happened on last night's episode of Lost in the Main OOC General Forum, you may want to use this kind of tag with a preface of "Hey, here's what happened." To read spoiler text, simply click the button with the mouse to open (and close) it.

Example: (SPOILER)Spoiler Text(/SPOILER)

Result:

Dice RollingDice are done via bbcode on the site. That means you have to understand just a little bit about how to code things inside of a post.

Dice are rolled using the following code: (dice)ndx+m(/dice)

The n represents the number of dice you want rolled.
The d with the x represents the type of dice you want rolled: d4, d6, d8, etc.
The m represents the modifier your character has, if applicable. If there is no modifier, just use the ndx method; if your modifier is negative, change the + (plus) to a - (minus).

Now let's say you want to roll the dice for an attack on a kobold. That would mean 1d20+modifier for your character (attack modifier in this case). If your character has a +3 modifier with a short sword then you would use the [dice] tags like above with 1d20+3 as your desired attack roll. Your roll would end up looking like the following:
Dice * Roll:
1d20+3 (12)+3 Total = 15

Note: the red star next to the dice result is due to the roll being copied from another post. If and when you make fresh rolls for your posts, those red stars shouldn't happen.

Hint & TipsWhen rolling attack rolls, you should also roll damage. Usually, you do this all in the same post (where you roleplay out your attack). This way, if you do make a successful attack, the damage is already calculated, helping to keep the game moving.

Important!Once you submit a post with a roll in it, you should never edit the dice rolls in the post. If you do, a little note like the one above ("Fixed") will be attached to it, and it let's your DM and others know that you have altered the post, and potentially the roll. This could be considered cheating, and nearly all DMs and players look down upon this.
You can go back and edit all the text in the post, just not the dice code. Be careful if you cut and paste while editing, so you don't include the dice code either, just so you don't appear to be cheating.

So, there is dice rolling.

for questions that you were unable to find help with in the FAQ, please send a private message to a current staff member/super moderator.

Favorites ListThe Favorites feature can be used to keep track of games you are playing or DMing.

To add a game to your Favorites, access the Game Tools drop down menu in the game board. From there, click (depending on the style, the text may be different) "Add to Favorites". To remove a game from your Favorites, head to your User Control Panel (My Account). Under the name of each Favorite, you'll see a link to "Unsubscribe" from that forum. Clicking this will remove it from your Favorites list.

The game will appear in the your user Control Panel, which can be accessed by the My Account button on the navigation bar. It will also appear on the index page in a left-hand bar above your buddy list.

Please note, there is no way to control the order in which Favorite games appear.
