Rogue Trader: Voided Warranty

Game NameRogue Trader: Voided Warranty
Game SystemOther Roleplaying Games
ThemeA grand adventure to throttle the heavens and shake from them your heart's desires.
FlavourGrimdark, but not with room for humor and light in the darkness.
Plot SummaryA newly formed Rogue Trader has been granted his Warrant by Lord Marius Hax, the austere and dignified Lord Sector of the Calixis Sector. Hax has chosen to send another wave of newly minted Rogue Traders into the Koronus Expanse in hopes of speeding up, or even making some actual headway into pacifying the wildlands of the Expanse, and making the area suitable for expansion of the Imperium's civilization.

Of course Warrants of Trade come with conditions, and yours has at least one, possibly more.

ApplicationsI am not interested in statistics. I want characters. Characters with character.
Please apply with the following.

Name: Obvious. Include any aliases or nicknames if you like.
Career: I will not be selecting characters based on career, beyond only selecting 1 Rogue Trader for obvious reasons. If we have 2 particularly good Voidmaster applications, we'll have 2 voidmasters in the group.
Description: Feel free to add a picture, but I'm not just wanting a physical description. A picture might not exactly convey your character's demeanour and general presence, nor how they come across in casual interactions, or formal. So even if you have a picture please fill out a text description as well.
Background: Bonus points if I can figure out your planned Background Path solely from this section (though it's not necessary).
Vignette: Select some key facet of the character that you'd like to highlight and write a short Vignette about them that illustrates this.

As a newly minted Rogue Trader dynasty, there will have been no chance for sanctioned Xenos characters, however later on the possibility will be there for replacement characters or players. I am looking for between 4 and 6 players, anything more is unwieldy, and less tends to result in games that peter out.

ExpectationsI'm aiming for 2 in game posts of reasonable length per week, and would like to see that many from players as well. More would be fabulous from the PC's, but less would be frowned upon without some sort of notification, even if it's just “I stared at the page for ages and couldn't come up with anything, go ahead and move forward.” Writers block happens. So do illnesses, vacations, and just life in general. I only ask that you keep the group appraised of those fluctuations and I promise to do the same.

I'm not expecting every post to be Chaucerian in quality and artistry, but I do ask that you use a spell-checker and try to have reasonable grammar and punctuation. Mostly I'm hoping for something that I can read and understand without too much difficulty (Mild ADD).

I'm also hoping that people will be open and straightforward with both me, and each-other. I want to have fun, and I want you all to have fun too. If people aren't having fun, let's try to fix that.

MechanicsOnto the nitty gritty. I don't particularly need a character sheet as part of application, but you should probably decide on at least background path to start, since it's kind of necessary for writing a lot of your background entry in application.
DO NOT make any rolls in this thread.
Characters will be built using the standard character creation rules with a few exceptions.
Characteristics will be purchased on 100 point buy rather than rolled.
Background path can have one unrestricted jump when selecting the path. Please note where it happens.
Characters will have: an additional 500xp over the this cannot be spent on things that are part of normal character creation, like background path options that cost XPstandard starting XP, meaning characters will have 5,500xp at game start. I am fairly permissive with elite advances so long as you can reasonably explain why your character should have it.
Characters will receive: one unique or semi-unique gift from SpatulaODoom's vault of custom 40k stuff. This might include things like a servitorized arbitrator that's still got fragments of his original personality, an ancient pattern of light tank half-way between a Chimera and a Leman Russ, a ship component that allows your ship to do a micro-warp jump once per combat to re-position themselves, a best craftsmanship double eagle autopistol (storm quality), a small supply of do NOT use more than one per weekhealing spore grenades, or a pet land-squid of unusual size.

Note: While you won't get any additional acquisitions on character creation, you will get a chance to make a couple on the way out of the Calixis sector.

Character Name: Captain Malleus Cain

Origin Path: Homeworld: Void born
Career: Arch-Militant

Description: Tall, broad, looking every inch the hulking brute, Malleus Cain is built for the heavy lifting in life, violence and survival. Generally dressed in heavy fatigues, carrying an array of weaponry, with buzz cut hair and numerous battle scars he wears as a subtle trophy. He is surprisingly well spoken but there is an accent which spacers will recognise as belonging to someone from a lower, more manual labour orientated background.

Backstory: Malleus was born second son in a family who for generations had managed the upkeep and resupply of the aft gunner battery on the transport Name can be changed if other links requiredSanguine Mistress. Reaching adulthood without having ever set foot anywhere but the ship, his life was planned out for him bar for several quirks of fate. In the first, he caught the eye of a daughter belonging to a rival battery supplier who decided to use him as a pawn in the toxic relationship she had with her father. Malleus was largely immune to her charms and this ended up in her frustrated attempts driving a rift between the two clans.

The expectation aboard was that this would burn itself out and not become an issue, however, in a violent exchange Malleus's mother was beaten close to death. The touch paper was lit and Malleus was found two days later disposing of final parts of the opposing family's patriarch in the acid bath used to scour the gunnery machine parts. The ships guard were summoned and found the man sitting patiently awaiting their arrival. His story may well have ended here with execution or imprisonment if it was not for a timely Ork attack on the ship.

Trapped in the aft gunner section, an imperial navy captain chose to recruit several crew members to bolster the squad he had brought to arrest Malleus and so began his military career. The ship invasion became a war of attrition with countless waves of Ork pirates crashing against the military might and general crew determination to repel them. During these days, Malleus's natural physical attributes, loyalty to the ship and preternatural talent for unbelievable violence resulted in several field promotions as the troops were decimated. His final test came, clearing a route to the ships bridge in order to gain control, his commanding officer making specific note of his skill with a hellgun and the fact he carried the officer with him after he fell despite the risk. He would make an excellent addition to the Imperium's officers if not for his total disregard for military ettiquette

On the ship's arrival, his current rank of Captain was assessed, he could not be absorbed into the existing system due to his lack of formal training but they were loathe to have him executed because of his loyalty and obvious skills. A decision was made that he would be assigned to a ship with a position appropriate to his assumed rank, but that ship should be travelling far, far away from civilisation.

Picture and Vignette to follow....

Well fancy meeting you here. I look forward to seeing it. Have you ever played any of the FFG 40k games before?

Note to others, if you want to re-use a character you applied to the Hawthorn game, or any other, go right ahead.

I’m going to wish you the best of luck Spatula!
To everyone else, whilst I haven’t had him as a DM, he is an awesome RPer, and I’m certain you’re in good hands.

Ask away. The system can mechanically be kinda clunky, but it isn't too complicated, being at it's heart a good ole d100 system.

Awesome. Make sure when you copy him over to here you also remember to add a vignette and anything else I'm asking for that isn't already there.

OK, I - perhaps amazingly - know a little bit about the 40k-verse due to an older brother. I was thinking of applying to the Hawthorn game but my character conflicted (IE duplicated) with another applicant.

Here is my idea...

Sister Gianna
right-aligned image

Name: Sister Gianna (also previously known as Gianna D'Arque)
Career: Sister of Battle (= Missionary, with a violent disposition!)
Description: Gianna is a devout disciple of the God-Emperor, pious and innocent, and will come across as passionate, fervent and perhaps a little dogmatic to her fellow crewmates. For her own part, she is there to ensure their spiritual purity, as well as redeem her own.
Background: Gianna, like many Adepta Sororitas, was recruited as an orphaned child. With a childhood of indoctrination and training, she grew to become a fierce warrior of the creed, participating in the great purge of the planet Arque, when it had become overrun by Chaos cultists. There she fought a daemon and prevented its entry and desecration of the planet's holy Imperial Basilica - the people hiding inside witnessed the terrible struggle and hence she was named. However, certain events of that campaign shook Gianna's faith in the Imperial Church, and she defied direct orders on an occasion. Records have been expunged. Unbeknownst to her crewmates, Gianna has been sanctioned by the canoness. Her punishment is to join this voyage, to watch over the crew and minister to their spiritual needs, but also to redeem her faith in the dark reaches of the void, ready to rejoin her cloister.

And, perhaps, there is word of a certain ancient lost artefact, that coincidentally lies upon the path of the Rogue Trader's separate objective.

May we still roll if we prefer the chaos of random stats instead? Also, any free choices in the path?

I'd prefer you use point buy. That way nobody's envious of someone who rolled well, or hobbled if they roll poorly. If you want some randomness, you could always roll dice to decide how you spend your points.
If by path you mean background path, you get one free jump/illegal choice.

The Navigator
right-aligned image

Character Name: Mendaric Graveon-Gantz

Description:
Mendaric is young for a Navigator and is much closer to normal humans in his appearance and if it wasnt for his third eye and his unusual graceful movement he would not garner a second glance from any other noble.
His sense of style puts him firmly in the expensive noble bracket but unlike others in his House it is less extravagantly adorned. This lack of exuberant style is for two reasons, firstly Mendaric sees them as something earned, a medal if you wish, secondly knowing what his demise will be he likes to indulge himself and less attention can be useful.

His appearance is typical for someone spending a lot of time in space almost exclusively, a little taller, a little paler, with dark eyes and his head shaved.

Backstory:
Being born a Navigator is an automatic entry into a life of power and privilege and the benefits that provides. Whilst his nomadic house of Aleene is not seen as powerful as a Magisterial house what they lack in obvious wealth they make up for with greater experience and knowledge (or so their propagandists state). Experience hard earned out in the void, living as they work this had led to a culture of disdain for those on a planets surface, come to space and your acceptance might increase.

Unbeknownst to Mendaric he has been identified as potential candidate for a future Novator for his house, there are others but they keep this secret - early assassinations are discouraged as it shrinks the candidate pool to soon. What they do instead is encourage some kind of independent service to hone and sharpen the candidates and to provide an opportunity to grow the houses connections.

Mendaric has benefited from a better than average education compared to some peers (which he accredits to his breeding, little to no mutation is beneficial in the Imperium) and has allowed him more opportunities to serve as Navigator on ships and routes that interest him more than they benefit the house. This has also led him to more questions, a quest for knowledge that has become one of his vices and accepting his future demise he has acquitted himself with a memory implant to ensure all his indulgences can be relived at his convenience.

Whilst out and about navigating and indulging he has had the luxury to taste many pleasures and learnt many things - some the Inquisition would consider, well lets say dangerous. It has also led to some strong disagreements with Academics whom Mendaric feels read and write too much about things that he himself has dealt with directly, especially with regards to the Immaterium.

On one particular voyage Mendaric used the opportunity to keep a ship in Warp longer than necessary so he could spend more time 'observing' its inhabitants. There was an unfortunate incursion, whether from a falling Gellar or an especially strong entity but Mendaric got some close up experience that will never leave him and has further spurned his interest in more dangerous areas of lore. The crew losses were not insignificant but the ship damage was minor enough that there was little in the way of a serious investigation - only ships on the move make money.

Having honed his skills and learnt his pleasures he is now coming to realise his potential and how his standing within his house and the Nobilite in general can open so many more doors and more opportunites. Who knows what secrets become available to a Novator, and the risks from without as well as within are all part of the process.

Perhaps it time a Nomadic house provided the Paternova.

Vignette:
Mendaric's shift in the Navigator 'suite' was over which he always loved and hated. Loved the Warp so powerful, so dangerous, so exciting - hated the tiredness and how coming back to the materium brought the jolt of his mutations back to him, he was young but knew this sensation would increase with time. The Price of our Power he sighed inwardly, Mendaric would suffer no outward sign of weakness, weakness invites treachery and treachery is the most common currency in the galaxy. He nods, slightly as befits their positions, at the next Navigator set to take up another shift "Navigator Prence, seems the Warp is behaving itself so far I hope it continues for you in the same way" and he picks up his staff and heads back to his quarters his thoughts on his plans to relax.

He takes a leisurely walk around the command levels aiming to get a drink of some mild stimulant for his body as his mind is still full of vim. Most of the crew avoid his gaze, for good reason which makes Mendaric smile again he's in a better mood than usual today as the last shift wasn't too arduous, and heads to the Commanders restaurant to look for a drink. The longer slower walk has worked out his bodily discomfort and the drink has given him the extra buzz he was hoping for and on scanning the room he spots an associate and strides over "Master Hydrologist Grubevo I was hoping to see you. Do you mind if I join you?" Mendaric sits without waiting for an answer as 'No' is not usually a response he hears and a good stare can quickly turn a no to a yes, plus most of those that know Mendaric have been trained by now. He rambles on for a little while talking about the condition of the hydro systems before getting to the meat of the conversation "How are the tank reconditioning processes? If I remember correctly you are still working on tank H one hundred and five"

"Aye Prime Navigator that tank suffered the worst when that fool crossed the fluid streams. I can assure that it has no impact on the efficiency of the ship in any..."

Mendaric holds up his hand "I am quite sure you have it all in hand but nonetheless I may pass by later on one of my rounds checking on the shielding" he stands up and in a quieter voice "I expect you will have a crew working the tank?"

"Of course Prime Navigator. I will be there myself as the Lord Captain demands the minimum of failures on his ship"

"Excellent, till later Master Grubevo" Mendaric takes his leave and walks back to his rooms where he lets his assistants remove his official garments. After a charming meal in his chambers and a revitalising jet bath he's ready for his 'tour'. "I will be going on one of my usual Gellar treks later Fyona could you prepare my mingling attire and then take the rest of the evening for yourself". Fyona bows at the request, there is nothing to say as no questions were asked and prepares a plainer set of clothing for the Navigator before heading back to her own quarters.

Mendaric checks himself in the mirror ensuring the hood of his robe covers his third eye enough to get him past most cursory glances. He's less concerned about the exquisite cut of cloth or the dark red trimmings, he would just come across as one of the many officers on this ship on his off-duty. Satisfied he wanders off and after checking on some of the Gellar stations he ends up at Tank H-105 with a small work crew by the maintenance hatch "Greetings, is the Master and his gang inside" One of the crew looks up and Mendaric can tell from his sudden loss of colour that he knows who's addressing him and without any further trouble Mendaric finds himself stepping into Hydro Tank H-105. The tank is supposedly undergoing decontamination, which will be partly true in the near future but right now its been used for an underground fight club that caught the Navigators attention. He wanders over to the pit master "Pit Master Grubevo, this attire fits you much better" and he hands Grubevo a fine pouch with a sum of money that the Navigator deems paltry, Grubevo would disagree with that very much "Well Gantz I dont know if we could cover every win even if we all pitched in" Mendaric is fine with the familiar tone, he is a regular, nay a patron, of these moral boosting games and he actively encourages the distinction between his high role as Navigator and his more indulgent Gantz. With just a turn of phrase he can let those around him know exactly what weight a request is coming with, Gantz likes to play and mostly win but the Navigator, well no one has tried him at that game.

"I'm here for the sport, put this on the competitors that quarter closest to the engines this time. Last time it seems those closest to the prow were somehow weaker" and he walks off aiming to get closer to the arena, swallowed up by the mass and stench and chanting of the crowd. Nothing like some light and live entertainment to take one's mind off the weight of their duties he swipes one of the filthy brews they pass around here and joins in the chanting for the next fight "Ashrek Ashrek Ashrek" Looking at those competing tonight he's sure of some fine entertainment and a spot of treachery Treachery and Scrip all the way from a fight pit to the towers of mighty men and he cant help but smile as the first blow lands and the crowd roars.

Please do not make any rolls in this thread. That applies to everyone, and is a general rule in this sub-forum.

I will have a look over everyone's submissions so far and offer thoughts tomorrow.
If anyone can think of others that you want to play with and like 40k/RT stuff fee free to message them on my behalf. I did kind of jump into this without posting another interest thread, but given Ace T's recent posting I figured I would actively not spam interest threads.

2. If i'm reading this right, character creation gives me the equivalent of a character with 4500xp spent. So I have 500 more and then an extra 500 gifted by yourself. The amount to advance those talents is in the tables of the book and I can only advance the ones attached to my career path. So, effectively I have 500 to spend on basic upgrades and 500 I can use to look at additional or elite advances.
3. I took an implant of subskin armour, the text said I could upgrade to common or good for xp but I can't see why it would be of benefit to do this, am I missing something?
4. Stats are combat heavy and poor on the Fel. Are any of them 'shooting myself in the foot big-time' low and should be reconsidered?
1= Technically it's an Agri-world. Death worlds tend to be pretty grimdark to the extreme, where just surviving the world itself is a challenge. That's fine though, you can choose death-worlder and Iocanthos.
2= You're building a normal starting character. Check page 30 for how much xp a character should have spent on game start normally. And then you're immediately gaining and spending an additional 500xp.
3= There is, but I don't really care about nitty gritty game mechanics at this point.
4= That is up to you. I generally like my own characters to have something to contribute to the group outside of combat, but you're never going to be able to build a character that's going to have applicable skills in every situation.

Of note, a Rogue Trader ship is a flying city with tens of thousands, sometimes more, of crew, and a Warrant of Trade gives you broad sweeping powers not even dreamed of by your average Imperial Citizen. Though you will be spending most of your time outside the Imperium, RT's are still recognized as people of power and prestige. Your characters will collectively be the heads of the dynasty. The admirals, head scientists, CEO's, surgeon generals, popes, etc, of your own little (though hopefully not little for long) kingdom. So be ready to answer why your character is seen as worthy of being brought up to this level by whoever winds up playing the Rogue Trader.

Bron HarrowI like the general concept. Bron as a character is believable, consistent, and well defined within the space of an application. He also has a ready-made slot for character development and drama.

I'd be curious to know how we went from mercenary work on Io to being selected as a senior member of a RT crew. How does he come to the attention of either someone about to become a RT, or the Administratum on Scintilla (effectively Marius Hax's intelligence service) who might suggest the about-to-be newly minted RT hire him on? Being hired on as a bodyguard might be a good starting point, and then Bron shows himself ridiculously capable (Starting level RT characters are actually pretty skilled and powerful).

You're concerned about being a one note character, and I can appreciate that. It's the fighter's dilemma in older editions of DnD of “what do I do outside of combat?” On ships your Ballistic Skill can be used in directing the ship's guns. If you don't want to have Fellowship and/or be the General, you could always lean into wilderness skills, like Survival, Alertness, Silent Moves, and Tracking. You could easily develop into a stealthy scout/big game hunter/guide. A wilderness guide/pathfinder/etc can be very useful in many exploration tasks. As written, your only possible role in social interactions is going to be intimidation (strength based skill), but that can be pretty handy.

GiannaI'd be fine with her as either a Arch Militant or a Missionary, but as written a Missionary seems more appropriate. She's focusing on her faith and the faith of others.

I really like how you justified her being attached to a Rogue Trader crew. It seems very plausible, and could be put forward in a way that nobody would question.

It's a good start, but I'd like to see a little more definition. Is there something that differentiates her from other Sisters? That you'd be able to point out as “this is what makes her different?” Why did she defy direct orders? Was it on a moral basis, they were making some sort of mistake of a more pragmatic type, or was it a conflicting interpretation of dogma? Would you consider her a Sister Repentia? Perhaps a lesser version, or one from a specific sect that does things differently for Repentia?

Mendaric Graveon-Gantz
Well he certainly has ambition! You did a good job of putting out the origin path in the background. I am however left with some questions.

I think the backstory does an OK job of showing it, but what is his general demeanour? What sort of experience do people who meet and talk with him come away with? Finding out what face he presents to the world will be helpful to me. There's a lot of minor NPC's in the crew who might interact with him, but we'll never roleplay every little bit, so it helps me have them have the correct attitude towards Mendaric.

It's mentioned he's “knowing what his demise will be” in the description. It's mentioned again in his background, but nowhere is it explained where/how/what it means. It left me a little confused. What's up with that? The only thing that comes to mind is you're tying it to the Foresight navigator power?

You'll need to take out anything that came up in rolling, because there is no rolling in the application thread. The site discourages it, and so do I.

Hope to see something from you soon Mightymconeshot. I had fun in that other RT game we briefly played.

@SpatulaODoom

Thank you for the helpful feedback!

I accept the role of missionary - especially as we have a militant on the team. I hope I will still be good in a fight, though.

I have finished the vignette and hope this provides some answers to your questions.
