Plot Summary In the year 2042, the world was forever changed by a series of devastating terrorist attacks. Cities were reduced to rubble, and an orange haze covered the globe. It became known as the Orange Sky Event - a tragedy that would leave millions of names etched into memorials across the world. But out of the chaos emerged something unexpected: superhuman abilities. In the aftermath of the attacks, a small percentage of survivors found themselves changed, with incredible powers that defied explanation. And now, one year later, the world has become a very different place. As nations struggle to rebuild and recover from the Orange Sky Event, tensions are high. Governments and organizations are scrambling to contain the growing number of superhumans, who have become a force to be reckoned with. Some see these individuals as a threat, while others believe they hold the key to a better future. It is in this world that your adventure begins. As a player, you will navigate a complex web of politics, shadowy organizations, and ambitious criminals in a rapidly changing world, all while trying to master your newfound powers. You'll encounter villains who seek to exploit your abilities, and allies who will stand by your side through thick and thin. I'm your friendly neighborhood Fairy Overlord! I've been lurking for a while, but I haven't seen anything that's really caught my interest lately, so I decided to just make my own game! I'll admit, this might be a mistake on my part -- play by post is not my medium of choice most of the time, and as I understand it, it's very demanding. -- but I want to try anyway. I'll come out and admit right now that I'm very much a quality over quantity roleplayer. Just because a post has a lot of text doesn't mean it's a good post, and not all short posts are bad. What this means in practice is that a lot of my posts are going to be on the shorter end; a few paragraphs, usually. I'll add detail where I feel it's appropriate, but I'm not going to wax poetic about every crack in the street in each and every post. Similarly, I don't expect you to write a novel every day. A couple paragraphs with a decent amount of detail is all I really need to get the ball rolling. -------------------------------------------------- The Game Stuff So let's get down to what I expect for characters, and the application process. We'll be starting the game at PL7. You've had superpowers for at most, a year. Some of you may have developed them later, but nobody had superpowers before the Orange Sky Event -- at least, nobody in our party. I'm not going to do a blanket ban of any particular powers or effects. I encourage you to be creative. Part of the fun of M&M is feeling unique and powerful in your own right. That said, M&M is a game that is easy to break if you know what you're doing, so I'll be on the lookout for anything truly game breaking and ask you to change it or adjust it over the course of the application process. For the best results in the application process, I'd like you to focus on the character more than their powers. I want to know who they were before the Orange Sky. I want to know how their lives have changed since then. I want to know their friends, and family, and hopes and dreams and what their favorite foods are. Feel free to make up locations and places and things. The world is different than our own. It's more than two decades in the future, and an Earth-shaking event has recently taken place. This is your chance to shape what this new world looks like early, if only on a surface level. I'm sure some of you are wondering about the expected post rate... and my early answer is: I don't know. I'm not really sure what's expected or preferred. Feel free to add your two cents about what's felt about right and reasonable in the past, and I'll try to stick to that. Tentative cutoff date for applications is currently: March 10, 2023

MERMAID   Name: Marina Lopez – aka “Mermaid” Age: 19 Concept: aqua powers!   Personality: Marina is young and somewhat naïve, from a simple upbringing. However, she is bright and enthusiastic despite the difficulties in her life, and can be charming and persuasive when arguing for what she thinks is right. She has witnessed bad people perpetrating true evil in her life, and has a strong moral compass. Her knowledge of oceanography, learned through practical experience, rivals that of a university graduate in the subject, and she has become passionate about the natural environment, particularly the lakes and oceans of the world.     Background: Marina Lopez is the daughter of a poor Mexican fisherman. She has only a vague memory of her mother, whom she lost when she was very young, and her father spoke very little of her. When he did, he made vague claims that Marina’s mother was an “angel of the sea” that once “saved his soul.” Some nights, when he had too much tequila, he told Marina her mother was a mermaid. As a child growing up in the fishing village of Zihuatanejo, Marina loved being near the sea. She was an instant and natural swimmer, and learned much about the animals of the ocean. But one day, when Marina was 17 years old, a drugs gang took over the town. The men took an unhealthy interest in her. Marina’s father knew he could not protect her, so he took her aboard his small boat and tried to flee to the US. He said he had some distant cousins in Nevada. On the way, avoiding coast guards, they were caught in a storm that threatened to sink the ship and drown them both. At the height of the storm, an orange haze covered the sky. The ship capsized and Marina was separated from her father in the water. She swam and dived, desperately looking for him, to no avail. But at the same time, strange powers seemed to have been triggered in her body by the orange haze. Marina found that she could breathe underwater and swim with increased speed and agility, like she had become a creature of the sea. Still, she could not find her father. She eventually made it to shore in California, and remembered her father’s last wish; to make good use of the life he had sacrificed himself to give freedom to her. Marina hitched rides to Discord City, their intended destination, as the rapidly rebuilding city was meant to be the place for new opportunities. But she never found her relatives. Marina lived homeless for a while, as chaos erupted across the Unites States – and the world – in the aftermath of the Orange Sky Event. It seemed she was not the only one who had been affected. She decided to keep her powers a secret, for now, in the climate of fear. She worked in hotel bars and nightclubs, then picked up a job as a lifeguard at a hotel pool, after rescuing an infant. Eventually, she was taken in by a wise old Maori man, who ran a “surfer” bar on a lakeside beach by the huge Lake Mojave (previously known as Lake Mead), just outside Discord (a popular tourist destination for those staying in the city). She worked as a waitress in Papa Haka’s Shack, sleeping in a spare room at the back at night. Papa Haka seemed to recognise something special about her. Marina quickly became a favourite with the patrons with her sunny personality and striking looks. She loved to swim with the wind-surfers, and her mastery of this skill soon became apparent. They started to nickname her the Mermaid.   Powers: Marina’s mutation is an evolutionary leap; her lungs have spontaneously developed an amphibian ability to breathe water, like gills. Due to her aquatic physiology, with muscle strength enhanced for pushing her body through the dense medium of water, Marina also found that she has gained great athletic ability on land – and feels much lighter out of water. She developed super speed, reflexes, agility and strength.   COMPLICATIONS: Enemies Below: Marina is not the only person mutated by the orange haze in a way connected with water. A great aquatic mutant called The Kraken also lurks in the depths. He was swollen and made into a monster by the mutation. He spied Marina when she dived deep in the ocean, and there is a river tributary from Lake Mojave to the sea, along which he has followed. Driven equally by hatred, jealousy, and desire, he wishes to catch and enslave her. Illegal: Marina needs to avoid contact with police, in case too many questions are asked about her presence in America. Trouble in the old country: Unknown to Marina, the drugs cartel that controlled her former hometown tried to force her father to undertake smuggling operations of their “merchandise”. He refused, which is why they threatened her. The only way he could safely get his boat out of the harbour was to pretend to take one shipment from them to the US. He threw the drugs overboard as soon as possible, when no-one was looking. But in the eyes of the cartel, he – and hence now Marina – owe them repayment. She froze for a moment, witnessing the men working the crane on the other side of the deck. They had brought up something from the depths… and the insignia on the sealed toxic waste crate told her everything she needed to know. They had found the extra-terrestrial weapon. The being between the two burly sailors seeped a bilious vapour from the sleeves and collar of his long, ragged leather coat – so incongruous in the bright Nevada sunshine. Marina knew this must be the mutant they called Fume. At that moment, one of the thugs happened to look over his shoulder and caught sight of her, mid-step as she tried to sneak along behind them. "Hey! What’s she doing here?” They all turned to face Marina. She hesitated, mind working furiously. She beamed her best smile. “Uhhh, wrong boat. Anyone seen a little dinghy around here?” Marina turned to dive back into the lake, but found her way barred by a cliff-face; a towering torso that seemed to be made out of diamond-hard rock. She looked up into the rugged features of the massive mutant, Boron. He grinned back down, then swung a fist like a battering ram. The impact crunched into her midriff, crushing the air from Marina’s lungs, and threw her bodily across the deck until she slid into the far wall. Marina struggled to rise. The thugs, and Fume, had moved quickly to surround her, while Boron cut off her escape route. Fume chortled from within the shadowy features inside his hood. Tendrils of greenish smoke reached out like tentacles toward Marina. She gagged on the overpowering stench of excrement and decay. “Unngh, how long since you had a bath?” she gasped, reaching out with her senses to the lakewaters surrounding the yacht. Extra credit: Character updated to reflect the game story, tone and location. I still hope to be part of a group of disparate heroes, all with different themes and powers, perhaps coming together as an impromptu team.

I like a mix of puzzle (investigation?), social and combat challenges. I have not mentioned hydro-kinesis in my background. I am intending for her to "discover" this power accidentally at some point during the story - perhaps in a moment of extreme stress. I also would like to bring in telepathy with sea animals as an additional power as we get more PPs to spend - so she is going through a process of self-discovery and growing up. Old Haka thinks she is touched by the ancient spirit of the ocean and watches on, wisely.

I'd like to make clear I don't expect the GM to artificially place scenes near to bodies of water just to accommodate me. Marina has some other skills which may be useful to the team (stealth and social skills). I accept that the flaw of the powers needs to really limit me sometimes! I do not expect to be the most combat-powerful member of the team, so will try to play more of a support role.

Ideally yes, this would be the way to go. That said, if someone wants to apply with something with a loose collection of powers like a low-power Superman character, that's perfectly fine too.

I have a couple of ideas but the one I really want to try is a kinda Aquagirl character I previously made. Hydro-kinesis is not such an awesome power but I think it might be fun to find creative ways to use it in games. She would be great at swimming/athletics too, but I think I'll drop the magical telepathy with dolphins lol.

I expect she was swimming when the orange dust descended, hence the mutation working that way.

But... I might also keep an eye on other apps and see which way the theme is turning.

I disagree! Hydro-kinesis is one of my favorite powers. I had a character once who was a heavy metal rockstar siren -- she controlled water (and to a lesser degree, sound) through music. She was super fun, even if I didn't get to play her for very long -- game got cancelled after just two sessions.

The exact location that the game takes place isn't necessarily set in stone yet -- if people have preferences, feel free to let me know.

For now, I am leaning toward using my usual go-to:

Discord City -- Built on top of the ruins of old Las Vegas, Discord City retains the casinos and luxurious lifestyle of its predecessor. Discord City was rebuilt quickly over the course of the last year thanks to the contributions of NovaTech, a company specializing in nanotechnology. It is currently the home of over 2.5 million people, including a significant superhuman population.

If nobody has any better ideas in the next few days, I'll put the details of Discord City up in the original post for people to reference as they create characters.

Technologically, things haven't changed a whole lot, but here are some key differences.

Things like Augmented Reality have taken off and become commonplace. Similarly, holograms are possible -- but commonly available holograms are easily distinguishable from the real thing.

Flying cars exist, but they're still in their infancy and most consumers don't have the ability to get them. Cars driven by AI, however are common. A manually driven car is actually a rarity, and with a few exceptions, most are now considered collector's items.

Nanotechnology has seen massive leaps in the consumer market, and have revolutionized construction. What used to take years to build can be completed in a matter of weeks -- which is convenient, because since the emergence of superpowers, buildings tend to be damaged a lot more frequently.

AI has become widely accepted, though there are still people who are afraid to adopt the technology. The first confirmed sentient AI was made five years ago, but to date there have been no public attempts to replicate that success thanks in no small part to constant lobbying against Artificial General Intelligences since the news broke.

As far as society goes, while I'm sure there are differences, it's similar enough to the modern day that most differences are probably superficial at best. The world is still pretty recognizable. If you had any specific areas of society you had questions about, or things you'd like to explore though, I'm happy to hear them.

I’m not expecting every encounter to be near water (in fact it will be cool to find some way to be useful away from water), it’s just that I’m hoping for a beachside location for my background story.

Character name: Alfred Forbes Age: 25 Archetype: the Batman Mutant Powers: Alfred is super intelligent. Able to pick up and learn new things quickly. Especially when it comes to technology. Nationality: Scottish. A Note On Scotland Post Orange Sky Scotland, unlike the the rest of the UK, was relatively unscathed by the terrorist attack. However with the flood of refugees and the lack of resources. some element of the Scottish, led by the politician Murdo Mckinley, seized power, under the pretext of a national emergency. Scotland is now a de facto dictatorship, with closed borders. People who protest the regime have a nasty tendency to disappear. What isn't known, is that Murdo Mckinley isn't a real person, but an advanced A.I., using holograms to appear in public. Physical Description: Alfred looks like the picture. What the picture doesn't show, is that he's tall, and slightly muscular. He never used to really care about how he dressed, but Isabella sorted him out. Now he clothes himself nicely for her. His Camazotz batsuit was adapted from a cosmetic design by Isabella, intended for an Mayan theme Halloween costume. She never got around to designing one for herself. Now he has redesigned it. "Camazotz" looks like a demonic bat and human hybrid monster. Black robed and furred, with ebony horns upon his bat head, and eyes as red as fire. Bat wings sprout out the back, as Alfred finally got around to making his device work. Also included a voice changer so he can make loud bat sounds. This batsuit is to both troll and mock the cultists. His flight is noticeable via two giant bat wings flapping, which creates some noise. Disposition/Personality: Alfred is a little socially awkward. He's never happier when he's tinkering away in his workshop, or with his wife and son. When in business he can be a tad hard, but he is a fair man. Alfred had relied on his wife to handle the human side of the business of A & I incorporated. Currently heartbroken and angry over the murder of his wife Isabella and kidnap of son Andrew Complications: Rescue of his son. This is his prime motivation. Alfred could probably live without avenging his wife, as he got Andrew back. Avenge his wife. His wife was brutally slain. The murderer remains at large. Alfred isn't sure what he's going to do if he catches up to them. Nemesis. Alfred is an over-achiever in that he already has a powerful enemy. Suspect. Alfred is a suspect in his wife's murder. Socially awkward. Alfred is not good with people in normal social situations. Some of the things he says and/or tone he says them in, can be misinterpreted. Background: "If they want a bloody Mayan death bat god, I'll give them a bloody Mayan death bat god." Alfred grew up in Scotland's capital, Edinburgh, to loving parents. Clever but a tad socially awkward, he excelled at schoolwork but not so hot at making friends. Especially at high school where his slightly pudgy frame was a source of mockery His life was to change when he read about the ancient Greeks, and how they believed you needed to exercise both body and mind. His dad was surprised by Alfred asking for a gym membership. The boy persevered with both gym training and schoolwork. His confidence improved as did his grades. Alfred still found people slightly difficult to speak to. University beckoned, and he moved into a dorm. Taking an mechanical engineering course, as that's where the smart, but not yet super smart boy's talent lay. He enjoyed the course, especially the design projects. Alfred had to literally dragged away from the library or gym, when he wasn't in class. Even after all this time, he was still socially awkward. This changed when he met Isabella, a beautiful international student from Mexico. For the first time he met someone he could just talk to. She just got him in a way nobody else could. Becoming inseparable, nobody was surprised when they married a couple of years later. After graduation they set up a small firm. AI incorporated, a tech company that offered and designed tech solutions. Whatever the client needed, they created. Isabella acted as the face of the company, and the contact point. Alfred was the creative genius. It worked well and the money trickled in. Best of all Isabella was pregnant with their first child! He couldn't be happier. A beautiful wife, a great son, interesting work, money in the bank, and his own workshop to tinker in. Sadly this is an origin story. No one is allowed to be genuinely happy for long. Two years after Andrew's birth, the Orange Sky happened. Scotland turned into a place that he didn't recognise, and Alfred was genuinely scared for the safety of his immigrant wife. Perhaps ironically Alfred should have been more worried his wife's fellow countrymen and less about the Scottish government and the Scots. Alfred was returning home, when a woman called out in Mexican dialect of Spanish. She sounded in distress, so Alfred tried to see if he could help her. Once he had been lured into a secluded area, that is when he was ambushed by several Mexicans, and brutally beaten so badly they thought he was dead. As they carried his body, Alfred overheard some things. They were a death cult dedicated to the bat death god Camazotz, and believed the orange sky and Andrew would herald his coming. They buried him alive. The only thing keeping him alive was the thought of his wife and son. He forced himself to dig his way out the grave. Fists bleeding and raw, Alfred finally broke out. Ran back into civilisation. Until he saw Isabella's photo on a tv screen in a store. Horrified Alfred realises he's too late. His wife is dead, his son is missing, and he is the prime suspect. The cult's plan was to kill him and make him a patsy for both crimes. It worked. Alfred was declared a fugitive and all his property was seized illegally. He decides his best option to let the cult believe he's dead, to let them enjoy a false sense of security. If they wanted a bat death god, he would become a bat. He managed to steal his prototype flying device, as well as his Camazotz costume, and sneak out of Scotland. He knew the cult was heading to Discord city and that was as good a place to start as any. Alfred's first case came from following some leads that lead to a bank. He hadn't yet assumed the Camazotz identity, and didn't have his Camazotz batsuit ready. Just as a masked vigilante, he broke into the bank manager's office, got to her desk which was festooned with pictures of friends and family. Alfred was more interested in her computer however. For somebody of his intellect and skills, hacking into it was laughably easy. Oddly the cctv system was down, so Alfred turned it back on to see what he was dealing with. It looked like eco-terrorists with a dash of anticapitalism. They had taken hostages, and were also arming a bomb in the vault. Alfred turned off the cctv system, so he wouldn't be caught on it, and set off the silent alarm to the police. Knowing he wouldn't have much time, Alfred stealthily picks off the terrorists guarding the hostages first. Hostages aren't able to go anywhere as the bank's locked down. Alfred proceeds to the vault, where he is ambushed by the remainder of the terrorists. Superior fighting skill wins Alfred the day here. The leader's mask came off in the fight, and Alfred's eidetic memory recalls the face in multiple photos on the manager's desk. This wasn't terrorism but a cover up of theft from the bank by it's own manager! Bomb is promptly disarmed. Terrorists defeated, Alfred makes sure the hostages know what a scumbag their boss is, and to make sure they hold her for the police. The hero makes his stealthy departure. The next day papers run a/story on a mysterious vigilante who saved hostages and defused a bomb, foiling a plot by a bank manager and her husband, to great acclaim! Roleplaying Sample: Pre orange sky and intelligence boost Alfred gazed at the materials before him. He's working in his workshop, on a private project. Trying to create a personal flight device. Nothing was working. He could not make it work at all. This was the kind of the challenge he loved. Taking a sip of his favourite soft drink, Irn Bru, he was considering a quick break Suddenly there was brief pain in his head. He could see equations, possibilities, so much he was briefly overwhelmed. Focusing on the device at hand, Alfred could see where he had been going wrong. Constructing a winged device, inspiration left him. Completing the passion project, Alfred was left with a lingering feeling he had forgotten something, but his confidence in his ability dispelled his doubt. Later, atop a small hill, he is with Isabella, to field test his design. She looks nervous, but she has faith in her husband. Alfred runs and jumps off the hill. For a moment he flies and is the god emperor of the world. Then he plummets to the ground. They had selected a small hill to fly off, so Alfred's only injuries were bruised ribs and his pride. I love M&M. It's really fun, and I use to play it a lot on this "thinktank" site that use to kick around. It changed to a different forum, but I never liked the changed site. This was all before I found RPGcrossing.

The two ideas that immediately jump to mind, are to builds I've had on the back burner for a long time. One is a Lizard-man build, which is a straight forward agile bruiser. Similar to spider man in terms of agility, strength and wall crawling, but obviously minus the whole webslinging bit. The other is a caped-crusader type, similar to a Batman-knock off, though since they would be a 16 year old, a lot of the gear would be home made and pretty basic.
