Rise of the Redscales - Get your Kobold On

Game NameRise of the Redscales - Get your Kobold On
Game SystemDnD 5e
ThemeKobolds, comedy, exploration, ignorance
FlavourLight-hearted, cute and whacky
Plot Summary

Rise of the Redscales

Are you Kobold enough?

An adventure for an all-Kobold party of 4th level characters.

WelcomeGreetings! This is something I've wanted to run with my own personal slant on it, for quite a while now. Together we'll run through the Redscales adventure, and then if things are looking good (and a TPK hasn't occurred) then I'd be happy to expand it out as the commencement of a Kobold-centric campaign. My main hope for this game is to see some Kobolds really come to life with their antics, a lot of comedic action, and fun times all round.

Two feuding Kobold tribes left alone in their Dragon Queen's lair...

Nobody to supervise them...

Surrounded by wealth and piles of magical artifacts...

What could possibly go wrong?

The Shell of a NutThis is the story of two Kobold tribes: the Redscales and the Bluescales. Their duties include guarding vaults and hoards, setting traps, feeding tamed monsters, and fighting off the occasional ooze. They are the Dragon Queen's caretakers. Oh, they also hate each other, and constantly complete for power and dominance in the lair. The reason? Didn't we just explain their scales are different colors?

Recently, the Dragon Queen awoke without warning, and departed along with some salamander servants. This was ten days ago. This is a long time for impatient Kobolds! Has she left for good? Are we abandoned? Alone with mountains of gold and dangerous artifacts... but... what if those sneaky and treacherous Bluescales get to the loot first?

Yes! This is an adventure about Goblins Kobolds! The best and brightest among the Redscales... but probably not the least foolish.

Proposed post-rate is 2 per week.

I Wanna Play This!Above anything else in this game, I'm looking for personality, individual Kobold character, and a fun writing style. I'll be aiming for a team of 4 or 5. To apply please respond with:

Character Name:
What the other Kobolds call you.
Class & Subclasses: You're level 4, and multiclassing is ok.
Personality: What is your Kobold like? What is unique or whacky about them? Any mannerisms we should know about? Are you friendly and trusting, or snivelling and manipulative?
Appearance: What kind of small, weak individual are you? How do you dress? What sets you apart from all the others in the tribe? Are you a cute Kobold, or an ugly scary one?
Bluescales, yuk: What did the Bluescales do to you personally, that makes you dislike them? For bonus points, feel free to create a rough Bluescale NPC who wronged you some way, in the past.
I Can Write Funny: Link to or write a small example of something humorous. Slap-stick, black comedy and all forms of funniness acceptable!

The deadline for applications isn't set in stone because I don't know how attractive a game this will be. I'm thinking until the 6th March, maybe? I'm hoping to find players who can create drama in their posts, appreciate small things, and can get fully into Kobold-mode.

Which Kobold? You don't need to delve into mechanics for the application, but if you prefer to do the number-crunching at the same time (or check you meet some prerequisites hehe), feel free! There are a few ways to make a Kobold, but we will be using the following:

Stats: 27 point buy.

Race: Only Kobolds need apply!
  • Ability Score Increase. Increase one stat by 2, or two stats by 1.
  • Age. Kobolds reach adulthood at age 6 and can live up to 120 years but rarely do so... lol.
  • Size. Kobolds are between 2 and 3 feet tall and weigh between 25 and 35 pounds. Your size is Small.
  • Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
  • Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
  • Grovel, Cower, and Beg. As an action on your turn, you can cower pathetically to distract nearby foes. Until the end of your next turn, your allies gain advantage on attack rolls against enemies within 10 feet of you that can see you. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
  • Pack Tactics. You have advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of your allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated.
  • Sunlight Sensitivity. You have disadvantage on attack rolls and on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight when you, the target of your attack, or whatever you are trying to perceive is in direct sunlight.
  • Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Draconic.

Background: Something relevant to your life as a Redscale, flavour it up however you like!

Gear: Standard gear for your starting class. There aren't a lot of shops in the Dragon Queen's Lair for doing upgrades, and until now... she's been rather protective of her stash!

Name: Mortis Draconum
Race: Kobold
Class: Wizard/necromancer
Background: Sage
Alignment: lawful evil
Personality traits:
1 I use words to convey the impression of great erudition
2 I…speak…very…slowly…when talking…to…idiots…which…almost…everyone is…compared…to me.
Ideal: power. Knowledge is the path to power
Bond: I have an ancient text that holds terrible secrets that must not fall into the wrong hands
Flaw: I speak without really thinking through my words, invariably insulting others

Appearance: Mortis wears black robes with a fine belt he got off a halfling. He covers his face with the skull of a baby dragon that was killed by adventurers. He carries a staff with a coiled handle and a sculpted demon head on top. His scales are a light green, and His eyes glow with arcane power. His lizard familiar, a bearded dragon named Calesi likes to sit on his shoulder.

Personality: Mortis is highly intelligent, and curious almost to a fault. He often risks his life to observe dangerous creatures or phenomena, but it hasn’t killed him yet, though a few others haven’t been so lucky, but it was a small price to pay for knowledge. He is constantly frustrated by the small, ignorant minds that surround him, and he has little patience for them. If he didn’t need them for cannon fodder, he probably wouldn’t even bother. Once he creates his army of undead minions, things will be much simpler.

Bluescale yuk: There is a bluscale sorceress named Silverwing who Mortis envies greatly. Despite his intellect and hard work, her god given magical talent always outshines him.

Backstory: Mortis had always been…different than his clan mates in the Redscale Colony. More…evolved, refined, insightful, intelligent, superior. He had always admired Silverwing’s magic, and it didn’t take long for that admiration to turn to coveting it for his own. Sadly, he lacked her gods given power, but fortune smiled on him.

One day a human wizard attacked the colony, a necromancer with a small horde of undead. He was defeated, his minions slain. Everyone celebrated their victory, but what Mortis noted was how much of a fight one necromancer with undead warriors was able to put up. The warriors picked through the human’s possessions, taking coins, potions, and other trinkets, but they discarded the greatest prize: The wizard’s spell book which Mortis was able to sneak away with.

He taught himself to read by studying the book, no easy task, but he was up to the challenge. After countless hours of diligent practice and repetition, he managed to cast his first spells. What Silverwing possessed through providence, Mortis earned through hard work, talent, and diligence.

He has put his knowledge and magic to good use, participating in the colony’s defense, and researching arcane secrets to benefit the community, but his main goal has always been himself. One day he wishes to create an undead army, become the leader of the colony, or perhaps found another one, and attain greatness. The dead can mine without rest. They can guard without distraction. They are sustained without food or water. They are the perfect labor force. Mortis just needs to get stronger.

Such a great and crazy concept! I would've applied here in a heartbeat if I could! Sadly my hands are full in RPGs and RL monsters. Wish you the best!

Wow what a fun campaign concept. Let me see if anything comes to me, cuz I'd definitely love to throw my hat (skull helm?) in the ring

Edit: I came up with a character I love, it was surprisingly easy, I suppose that's in the nature of a good prompt.

Mikriti - Dragon Princess!
right-aligned image

Character Name: Mikriti! (mee-KREE-tee) Dragon Princess! Well, the others aren't great about always adding Dragon Princess to the end like they should. Mikriti is certain they'll come to their senses soon.

Class & Subclasses: Drakewarden Ranger 4 (What better opportunity to try out this subclass than a Kobold campaign!)

Background: Mechanically, tbd. Mikriti found a perfect round gemstone among the Dragon Queen's Hoard. Mikriti would NEVER steal from the Dragon Queen, but to her surprise, the gemstone followed her to her cave! You can't blame Mikriti for that! Gem came on its own! She loved and cared for the gem, and just as she hoped it hatched into a beautiful shimmering drakeling of a hundred shining colors. Mikriti knew how important the first hours of the hatchlings life would be, so to bond with the hatchling, she pretended to be a dragon herself, she would be the little drakeling's mother. Er - Not that any kobold could ever stand in for the Dragon Queen but... well Dragon Queen very busy and drake will need a mother who will be there for it!

Personality: Mikriti is vain and arrogant. As well she should be! Not only was she chosen (indirectly and not intentionally but you won't hear her mentioning that) by the Dragon Queen to raise one of her brood, she is herself a dragon! Or at least, she always acts like one. She goes around on all fours when not needing to run (for her life or otherwise (Cowardly description writer! Mikriti would never run for life!)), climbs up on top of things and claims to have flown there, hoards little trinkets and sits on top of them, things like that. This very much colors her personality because she almost never drops the act, so she's always acting proud and domineering, which is funny of course because she's like the tiniest scrawniest little wimp. She generally models herself after a RED dragon, for reasons nobody can guess (idiot writer, red best color!). She's also a bit derpy, and has a habit of getting too excited or upset about unimportant things, or saying and doing things that conflict and failing to understand the contradictions.

Appearance: Mikriti is, frankly, adorable. She has huge floppy ears, tall horns, and an oddly rounded snout like a salamander. She wears a cloak over her armor that she made herself out of fallen dragon scales and other shiny colorful things that could be mistaken for dragon scales at a distance. It shimmers like a rainbow in the candlelight. She also wears a rusty tiara that she made out of bits of scrap metal and old nails.

Bluescales, yuk: One of the bluescales, Ebernark, painted Mikriti's drake blue! Blue! Worst color! Worst kind of dragon! Terrible!! Took all day to wash, and Mikriti got blue paint on her! Awful blue terrible.

Writing Sample:

I look forward to seeing what everyone else comes up with!

Character Name: Old Eejit
right-aligned image

Class & Subclasses: 1 Barbarian/3 Druid

Personality: Old Eejit is...old. Maybe as old as the Dragon Queen herself, or so he would claim. And claim a lot, he did."I was there when Klauth himself was birthed. Swaddled him first, I did. Cute as a button." But who was there to debunk his claims? There was very fewer older with any evidence to the contrary, and those who were older, well, simply didn't care. The Old E was also a stickler for tradition, something these damn hatchlings didn't respect in the slightest! "Back in my day, we were proper Kobolds! We worshipped the queen from the moment we woke to when we went to sleep, and them some! Why, if ya didn't dream of the queen ya got 50 lashes! We had Dreamwatchers!....Yes...thats what we called them. Watch ya while ya slept. See if ya talked about the queen.

Appearance: Given his age, it was a miracle that Old Eejit was still mobile. Yet with stick in hand, we was still as swift as a Kobold a tenth his age. With advanced years also came gray, flowing locks, cascading down from his crown and maw. This would be something E attributes to a healthy diet of ground pegasus bones when he was younger. Another thing yet to be disproved. His scales on the other hand, were not so lush. They were now the colour of faded brick, but rest assured they were once as crimson as the blood of Tiamat in his youth...

Bluescales, yuk: What did the Bluescales do to you personally? Well what didn't they do!? Those devious, untrustworthy, blue menaces are responsible for famine, drought, thunderstorms, stubbing your toe, hiccups, losing your keys...Everything! Or so you would believe after a minute in Old Eejit's company. The truth is (and not in a million and two years would he admit it) there was nothing specific that the Bluescales had ever done to him personally. It was just built into him.

Background:
Old Eejit, his real name was long forgotten, was the tribes historian. Ironic for someone who couldn't even remember their own name. But as the oldest, it was his job to keep the records of the tribe and all their misadventures. But here in lies another issue. Old Eejit was not especially good with words. Oh saying them was fine. They'd fall out one after the other and create great accounts of the past, even if not entirely true. But getting those words on to paper? That was the tricky part. However, Old Eejit had had many years to refine his craft...with drawings.

"Ummm...What is it E?" asked the young confused Kobold.
"What? Ya daft moron. It's a picture." Rasped Old Eejit. His eyes burning daggers at the idiot youngster.
"Yes, E. But of what?"
"What you mean of what? It's damn obvious.Shrieked E. It's that time we set off the volcano and melted down the mining town."
"Oh...Ummm...Well it looks like a bunch of halflings at the beach under a palm tree..."
His dull red scales seemed to burn brighter as his anger rose. "Idiot! That's the volcano. How is it even a beach!? You know we don't use that lice-ridden colour, blue."
"Um... Well....They got towels....and that there's a dolphin, right?...and sandcastles.... Old E smacked the child on the back of the head. If Old Eejit said it was a volcano. It was a damn volcano!

Oh this sounds absolutely fun! I really like the concept of same race party lol

Couple of questions though:
-By Dragon Queen, do you mean Tiamat herself?
-Is this an evil-aligned campaign? You did mention it is mostly light-hearted and wacky fun. But I'm bad at being bad.

I was thinking of playing a support role (because I enjoy being an useless heal bot lmao), since no one seems to have applied for it so far. We'll see!

Rizz the Kobold
left-aligned image

right-aligned image

Character Name: Rizz
Class: Life Domain Cleric 4 (Though he truly believes he’s a Sorcerer blessed by Amaranthelyaveraxina. It was his faith in her that granted him divine powers)
Alignment: Neutral Good (He swears he's Chaotic Evil, but helps everyone in need. Yes, even bluescales when no one is watching)

Personality: When young, you were a normal redscaled kobold, and by that we mean that nothing made you stand out. One day however, someone brought a book to Amaranthelyaveraxina as an offering, and after your Queen gave it a quick read, she decided it wasn’t worth her time, and ripped the item apart. That seemed to be the end of it, until a torn off page landed near you. Curious as you were, you decided to take a peek at what such book could have had in it that made your Mistress so mad.

“We are all smart, differentiate yourself by being kind” It said.

The phrase puzzled you, and as your Empress did, you thought of discarding such shameful words. But then it got you thinking. You would like to help your Kobold kin (except the bluescales, those guys suck), so maybe being kind to your fellow redscales would be a good idea? Yes, be generous to those that deserve it! Genius, genius, you thought. If you managed to keep the morale up of your group, surely Amaranthelyaveraxina herself would see you stand out, and reward you! Everything for the lovely Queen!

Since then, you’ve delved into a little bit of Medicine, helping those redscales that would sometimes injure themselves when bringing something back for Amaranthelyaveraxina, or an ooze getting out of hand. Even a trap set erroneously, you’d be there to patch them up!

After a long while of being kind, you felt a magic power wake up within you. Your Queen had seen your worth at last, and had bestowed some of her power to you! Her will becoming yours, you’d work extra hard to keep all redscales healthy and come to their succor when needed!

Appearance: “I am one manly redscaled Kobold, who fears no bluescale! … Well, except for Vipa, but don’t tell her I said that- EHEM. Don’t call me cute, or I’ll bite you! I have been blessed by our Queen herself, and I’ll use her power to help us in our daily tasks! … Whichever those may be. Our Mistress left some time ago with some silly looking Salamanders, and hasn’t returned since! But we must not fall into despair, lest we let the Bluescales take advantage of our Dragon Queen absence and betray her! Stay vigilant, redscales!”

Bluescales, yuk: There’s this other magic user, Vipa is her name, a blue kobold that you despise so much. You get angry by her mere presence. Thinks she’s so clever doing her magic-y things, and claims she was also blessed by Amaranthelyaveraxina and that’s how she gained her powers too. Nonesense, you say! You were the one and only to be blessed by the Dragon Queen, you’re her one and only chosen. And you’ll prove Vipa wrong! Er, somehow. It would be easier if she wasn’t so cool, and helpful and good looking and has pretty green eyes, and a pretty laugh and and- Wait, no! You despise her! ARGH!

I Can Write Funny: Banana

Couldn't help myself and ended up writing something for an App. aaaaaaa

Hi Folks! Thanks so much for your interest and responses so far

Strangemund: You're too kind! You make me blush with your lovely flattery my friend. Yes, it felt like there was some space in my otherwise quiet life, for another little game hehe. I haven't run a race specific one before, but played in a goblin-only one once and it was really fun. There's something liberating about teams of critters!

Togot: Mortis is creepy as haha! The lawful evil alignment should work fine, and the idea of experimenting and trying to be an ambitious necromancer sounds fun. He has green scales? Interesting... I wonder how this could potentially effect part dynamics and subterranean politics lol.

ElderOblex: A handful of monsters and RPGs? Sounds like a great way to be!! Thanks heaps for popping in

squirmonkey: Mikriti sounds wonderful! The dragon-emulation and identify crisis is a really fun quirk, and the drake would no doubt be good for all kinds of mischief

Azure Nokori: Greetings! It is great to see someone willing to explore the idea of a really elderly PC XD. Which druid circle do you think Eejit would go for? There could fun to be had in flavoring things to suit an underground existence with him. The barbarian level sounds interesting too... I wonder how much he has to be poked to start raging

Dechado: Tiamat? Oh scary! Our Queen's name is... Aramanthelyaveraxina. She's quite ancient, and sure did some pillaging in her youth. As for the evil thing... I'm not too fussed on the alignment thing, as long as the group can find a way to move through the adventure together. Friendly and "nice" Kobolds are as welcome as cranky and calculating ones XD. I've often found useless characters to be the most fun to play too, and a bit of healing never hurt anyone when done correctly

Name: Kib
Race: Kobold
Class: Rogue
Background: Clan Crafter (Guild Arisian)
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Personality traits:
I'm well known for my work, and I want to make sure everyone appreciates it. I'm always taken aback when people haven't heard of me.
I believe that anything worth doing is worth doing right. I can't help it—I'm a perfectionist.
Ideal: Aspiration. I work hard to be the best there is at my craft. (Any)
Bond: One day I will return to my clan and prove that I am the greatest tinkerer of them all.
Flaw: I have trouble trusting in my allies.

Appearance: Kib considers himself to be amongst Tiamat's most favored as he was born with red scales. Those scales are adorned with a bluish-black tunic and trousers of similar color. It's clear that the clothes were not built with the kobold (or any kobold) in mind as the sleeves and pant legs have been cut short. Over those clothes, he wears a set of "gently used" leather armor. He wears his armor and clothing with pride and would never part with them (unless something better came along). In addition to his clothing, Kib wears a leather belt to house his many blades and a patchwork leather backpack to carry his tools (along with any goodies he discovers).

Personality: Even by Kobold standards, Kib is not considered extraordinarily intelligent or strong. However, what he lacks in brain and brawn he makes up for with guile and lightning-like reflexes. Like everyone worth anything in his clan, his strengths were identified early on and applied in ways that benefited his brethren and his queen. For Kib, that meant fixing things that needed fixing and setting traps to protect the queen's treasure. He loved his work, largely because he knew that few others in the clan had the skill to do it.

Bluescale yuk: From time to time, Kib goes out to check on his traps only to find that they have been sprung with little to no trace of anyone having been near them. While it's likely that this is due to his own novice-level skill at setting traps, he can't even consider that possibility. "It's those stupid blue scales! They're jealous of my talents and 'cause we're the queens' favorites!" While the queen's favor between the two clans was fleeting and ever-shifting, Kib (like most) believed that her favor landed squarely on his own clan.

Backstory: At ten years of age, Kib is far from the oldest in his clan. However, among his division of trap checkers and takers, he's practically a grizzled veteran. Most that share his volition do not live long lives. Whether that's due to being caught by their own traps or being caught by any number of threats (ranging from do-gooder adventurers to monsters) whilst working alone deep into their tunnels. However, Kib wasn't like most trappers, he could hold his own in a fight and he was good at staying in the shadows (emphasis on the latter).

RP Sample:
It will be fun to play a silly character that's not a bard...
Dashing through the forest.
That was a warning shot!
Beware the wrath of the dwarves!

Maybe the chief of the Redscales is Red-Green colorblind, and despite the other Kobolds' attempts to inform the chief that Mortis isn't actually red, he won't hear of it.

And that's Mikriti Dragon Princess to you!

Going Bearbarian. One level of Barb for the CON save and rage, then the rest Druid, which will be circle of the moon. Although thematically asan underground dweller he'll have more of a connection to the earth.

How much does he need to be poked? Not a lot, he's always pretty grouchy.

@97mg Oh! I assumed it was Tiamat herself, since “Dragon Queen” is one of her titles!
I think I like Amaranthelyaveraxina better lol
Looking forward to see how this develops, thanks for having us!

@97mg how would you rule the actions available to a Battle Smith Artificer's Steel Defender if this hypothetical Artificer were to be sitting atop this theoretical Defender? And would movement be shared or separate?

This sounds like quite the build! I think riding your defender as a mount sounds pretty classy So I'll confess to having not had to adjudicate much mounted combat in 5e in the past, but we could re-fluff the defender to be some kind of blend between controlled and independent... maybe. You give it instructions, and the DM then interprets them as though it is an NPC. Does this sound fun and viable? Probably separate movement, but I would need to think on it a bit more (and do some research lol).

I'm looking forward to this too! Hey, thanks for popping in and your application

Treble83: Thanks for making Kib! A trap-tender is a neat idea, and I love how it is possible that sometimes the traps fail, so the Bluescales become the scapegoats hehe.
