The Field of the Lost, The Diaspora, 6/3/317As Vette tries to give the pirates pause, Grix steps on it, turning wildly to starboard and veering past smaller bits of rock and debris! The Sunrise Maiden banks and weaves through the Field of the Lost, and the pirate ship surges forward. Her pilot effortlessly maneuvers through the dangerous asteroids and keeps the Maiden in sight. T'aro tries to get a scanner lock on the other ship, but they are not used to dealing with so much interfering matter and cannot get a fix! Grix's flying is good, but not quite good enough as the pirate ship turns toward the Maiden's stern at the end of his run!


"Haha! Yah, girl, da Black Bullettes are sooooper-tough bastahds, but you ain't flyin' da Black Bullette. You gonna make us do dis da hard way? So be it, Vagabond! Let me know when you had enough." At the end of this transmission, the Maiden's sensors pick up an incoming missile launched from the pirate ship!

OOGMRound 1 - Gunnery Phase

Nevynxxx: The pirate ship is in the aft quadrant and the flak thrower (your aft weapon) cannot reach the ship; HOWEVER, you do have a chance to shoot down that missile with the flak thrower (the weapon is basically the same as the point-defense cannons (PDCs) from The Expanse, if you ever watched that show -- i.e., they're designed to engage incoming tracking weapons. Make a gunnery check against DC 22. If you succeed, you intercept the missile. If not, brace for impact and hope for a miss! (Note: if you were firing a different weapon this turn, the flak thrower could engage the target automatically, but with a slightly lower chance of success).

Runetide: The pirate ship is well within the first range increment of the turreted heavy particle bean. You may fire without penalty.

Khalil: You may Encourage your gunners to give them a bonus, or taunt the enemy gunners.

Silk: Not much you can do here, unless you want to try to encourage a gunner or taunt? I'll let multiple encouragements stack on a specific gunner, or you can split them.

Matsu as all hell lets loose

Matsu whistles as Grix accelerates. "I'd forgotten what flying with you is like Grix. You need to teach me that sometime!". Even as he speaks though he's watching the tracking systems. Matsu watches the missle, hoping to let it close enough to target, but not so close it damages them in return.

Just as he pulls the trigger on the flak thrower though, the target lock disapears! "We have incoming folks. Brace for impact!"

Not quite good enough on those dice! Assumed no range increments for the missile. Used the Re-roll from T'aro, not too sure it still applies, but didn't work so...oops?

The Diaspora - The Field of the Lost: Attacked!
Mendev's jaw tightens as he hears the sensors alarm for a launched missile. We need to take that out! Matsu, lead your shots ahead of it's path. Grix, buy us some time while we do our scans. For a moment Mendev thinks about that, but then quickly changes his mind. Scratch that, charge towards it. Matsu, WE need you now. Steady shots. If this works we will be setting up to get behind her. Once we get behind, we will hail them again. We'll negotiate from a position of power.

|Green skinned, this half-orc female sports bleached blonde short-cropped hair and pearly tusks jutting from ruby lips. Endowed in both muscle and charm, she carries herself with the grace of someone used to wearing heavy armor and hauling heavy loads. On her neck is a brand that looked to be a menacing looking sigil, but the details are obscured by a tattooed 'X' over it in black ink. Body language is one of someone who is used to casual violence, but she doesn't aggressively pursue it. Vette has a positive, upbeat attitude that reflects her joy over newfound freedom and life. When relaxing and off-duty, she wears light station clothing, a strange mishmash of outfit pieces and parts seemingly assembled from a number of different people's collections. When at work, however, Vette wears heavy armor that's well maintained, clean... and bright neon pink in color with a logo of a landshark emblazoned on the back in black.

Born a slave on Apostae, Vette is a 8th generation half-orc descendant; a family lineage of both parents being half-orcs going back as long as anyone has record. (mis?)fortune found her as a young girl when she was purchased from the Drow by a space pirate crew, the Black Bulettes. A rough and uncomfortable lot, Vette was kept as a cabin girl and general laborer until she was old enough to start taking part in actual piracy. There was when she started to shine. Using her speed, strength, and toughness, she became one of the Black Bulette's best boarding crew. Several years and many successful raids later, she had amassed a fair amount of her own wealth. The Black Bulettes weren't only ship-raiding pirates, however. They had worked out a organic relationship with several of the businesses in the area, including the local asteroid-mining crews of the Diaspora, who were under the Captains express orders to leave them be... as long as they were willing to let some of the crew berth in their shipyards and docks every once and a while when the ship was far away.

"All right, we do this the fun way." Vette retorts. She lets the others worry about the flying pretty, all she needs is a good line of fire, and she had one. She ignites their shiny new particle beam weapon and cackles with maniacal glee as the weapon fire is snappy and responsive. "Yeeee Booooi! This gun f*ckin' rocks!" she cheers, stamping her feet a few times energetically before she swivels to keep the enemy ship in sight.


OOC Got a critical hit with the heavy particle beam turret! 31 damage, critical hit to the power core!

The Field of the Lost, The Diaspora, 6/3/317The pirates' missile weaves through the asteroids tracking the Sunrise Maiden through a network of radar, infrared, an optical sensors. Matsu toggles to control of the aft flak thrower and spies the incoming projectile in his sights. At his command, the gun spits out a stream of 20mm projectiles, every fifth one a tracer that creates the image of a lash whipping out from the ship's stern. The lashunta guides that lash onto target and blasts it to smithereens within 500 yards of the Maiden's tail!

Vette spins her turret to the stern and fixes the pirate ship with her particle beam. The blast--and this one rocks her turret--emits a thick bolt of energy and matter that streaks out toward the enemy ship and scores a direct hit! The beam tears through the forward shields and rips down the starboard side with a brilliant flash at the stern that could only be a a hit to the ship's power core!

"Whoa girl! Why you got such a big gun on dat little ship?! It don't matter! We got homefield advantage. I bet your pilot hits a few asteroids coming round that big one! Hahaha!" Grix doesn't let on, but this taunt Successful taunt! All Sunrise Maiden Helm Phase actions are at -2 for the next 3 roundshits home and suddenly she finds herself scanning rapidly for incoming rocks in any and all directions! The opening moves have all gone the Sunrise Maiden's way, but Captain Okwana seems confident in her surroundings.

OOGMRound 2 - Engineering Phase

Rolls.
  • Aja may do an Engineer Action, Chief Mate Action, or Open Action now.
  • Mendev has the option for a Captain Action, Chief Mate Acton, or Open Action now.
  • T'aro has the option for a Magic Officer Action, Chief Mate Action, or Open Action now (this would forfeit a SO action in the Helm phase.
  • Grix I assume will wait 'til the Helm phase to fly, but she lost the Pilot check and will have to move first once the Helm phase begins. So Blackfyre, you may post your moves when ready.
  • Matsu and Vette I assume will want to wait for the Gunnery phase.

Quick explanation of damage to the pirate ship: Vette's shot (31 damage) defeated the 15 points of shield on the pirate ship's forward quadrant, then did 16 hull points of damage to the ship. The roll was a critical hit, scoring 99 (Power Core). In addition, the hull points inflicted exceeded the ship's critical threshold of 13, meaning I rolled again on the critical table and hit the sensors. Sensors and Core are now glitching. If an attack next round does 10 or more HP of damage, give me a critical roll as you may exceed the critical threshold again.

Captain Okwana's taunt technically occurs at the beginning of the Helm Phase but I added it to this post so you will know the results going into that phase. The pirate engineer succeeded in diverting power to the shields and filled in that frontal arc with 7 new shield points, but the SO will have to rebalance them if they want to strengthen forward shields further.

T'aro watches as Matsu and Vette begin tearing the enemy ship apart. While they are shaken a bit by the enemy captain's bravado, T'aro tries to calm themself. They look at the computer, and let their mind connect the strands of life with the asteroid vectors they see on their screen. "Trust in yourself, Grix... And be aware of that region, right over there-- it will be acting a bit unpredictably..."

While the computers recalibrate, T'aro instead reaches out with magic, probing through the asteroids and into the enemy ship. They try, as best they can, to learn something useful. Weapons capabilities? Crew Size? They open themselves to the universe, and see what secrets are revealed...




 


OOC/Mechanics -2 penalty to my actions. Precognition to help Grix with her piloting. DC16.
Dice Mysticism:
1d20+11sch16 (12)+11 Total = 23
If success, Grix gets +2 to piloting on her next initiative check. Based on OOC conversations, changing this to Scrying, the mysticism equivalent of scanning. DC14 base.

Hells yeah, Matsu, that's how it's done. Ooo NIOCE HIT Vette. Mendev winced as he watched the "battleffield" unfold in space. Captain Okwana's assessment may have been more truer than he'd like to believe.

Mendev decided to retort. His initial thought was to use the bounty hunting badge to badger the woman into surrendering. But Mendev knew people. He didn't know Okwana in particular, but he knew people, and this Captain was as green as they came. Cocky and sure of herself. Probably thanks to an intellect and crew to back it up. She was probably trying to earn well deserved reputation amongst the Free Captains...

No. mentioning a warrant or a bounty won't have quite the effect. He mulled it over with himself.

Mendev clicked the comms to broadcast out to the enemy ship. A nassaly and accented voice broke through the comms. Captain Alera Okwana of the Frreeeee Captains. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I am a... Captain of a well maintained small renown. I'd like to keep it that way. I've heard a good bit of you. You have a promising career. I could only have hoped it was under better circumstances. Perhaps in a bar at Broken Rock.

Mendev let his finger go off the comms for a second. Letting the audible "shlirck" of the radio go out. After a short moment that seemed longer than it was Mendev clicked the comms again "shlirck". Captain, I must confess. While you do hold the homefield advantage, I assure you that circumstances are not in your favor. You see, in this ship I hold a hand picked cast of individuals for a special mission that is not YOU. The best at what they do. Vette has already introduced herself. I hope you are apt enough to be appreciative of the distance the void puts between you and her. Our ship has also been... how does the saying go... TWINKED. Yes, twinked. I'm sure you've noticed, much to the dismay of you and your crew. I'VE noticed. "shlirck"

Mendev watches as Grix trieds to maneuver. He looks over at T'aro and twirls his index finger forward in a circular motion, asking the shirren to hurry with his scans.

"shlirck" Now Captain; It is not lost to me that you offered us the option to surrender in exchange for our haul. First we have nothing, and your scans will surely show that. At least nothing worth the repairs for your ship IF you survive. Two, I shall extend you the same kindness. When you have had enough us tattering your can, you can surrender. At that point we will assess how much damage and time and you have cost us and then we will discuss the terms of a deal inclusive of recompense to match those costs. Come now Captain... early bird gets the worm. Is there no other way we can help each other, other than one being grave and the other lamenting the loss of opportunity? "shlirck"

Aja walked into engineering with a wide stride for better balance if the ship should take a hard jolt before she got to her engineering station. That worry is dismissed as all she felt was the strain on the gravity generators from Grix's evasive maneuvers. Once at her station, Aja engaged the safety bars that would help prevent her from being thrown across engineering but not hinder her if she needed to rush to another station.

Transferring one of her monitors to the tactical overview, Aja confirmed what she heard over the comms from the rest of the crew. Aja didn't like being chased and activated her comlink to voice her opinion to those on the bridge,

"Grix, I don't like being chased by pirates, diverting power to the engines. See if we can turn the tables and hunt the pirates for a change."

Aja quickly did just that and smiled as her screens showed the auxiliary power flow into the engines for more speed.

"And yes, if we had upgraded the thrusters as you had suggested Grix, we could be going even faster right now. Unfortunately, we had to change out those antiquated lasers."




OOC: I wanted to do a deep bit where after Matsu asks if the settings of the emotion chip could be adjusted, Aja has a big internal dilemma of leaving it at 90% that leads up to Vette grabbing her for movie night and calling her a robot and it ends with Aja turning it down to the recommended 50% emotion setting to enjoy the movie. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to do that, so I figured I'd just mention it here. <shrug>

The Field of the Lost, The Diaspora, 6/3/317Aja routes power to the thrusters and Grix can feel the throttle shudder in her grip as the thrust potential readings on her monitor spike into the red. As this occurs, T'aro reaches out to the opposing ship and sees that their engineer has failed to balance the shields! The forward shields have received some buttressing, but remain weak. They can also see there are OOC: I initially mis-wrote this as threefour life forms and a likely synthetic on board the pirate ship, which is a Nebulor Star Hopper class explorer that bristles with two light laser cannons port and starboard, a light missile launcher forward, and a turreted chain cannon.

Okwana's reply to Mendev crackles over the comms: "You heard'a me? Pretty impressive! Ya, we can see you got no cargo. But you got some primo parts on dat girl! They'd sure look good on da Rusty Rivet!"

Same map as before. Blackfyre, please post the Maiden's moves and the other ship will follow before the gunnery phase. Remember you can use the computer for a +1 and you have -2 penalty from the taunt. ALSO: you have 2 extra hexes of movement, courtesy of Aja's reroute.

Grix wasn’t easily shaken, but, in her defense, she also had never flown inside of an asteroid field before. Let alone during a battle. The ysoki eyed the various, tumbling rocks warily before deciding that this was just the right time to juice up a little bit. After all, what good was that nice little serum they had found a few weeks ago if it only sat in her pocket?

She retrieved the little flask and chugged its contents. "[ysoki]Just wait and see, I got this!" she said more to herself than anyone else before turning her attention back to the situation at hand. It still seemed prudent to keep some of those rocks between themselves and the pirates. At least for a while. Maybe… maybe they could play a little hide and seek.

"Thanks, Aja, but right now, I think speed’s not what we want." With that she proceeded to guide the Maiden around in a tight turn and parked her in the shadow of the closest asteroid, hoping the pirates would follow and fly right into their arcs of fire.

The Field of the Lost, The Diaspora, 6/3/317Grix downs the her small bottle of Diaspora Daredevil and it is suddenly like her nervous system is made of wired steel! Her pupils dilate and the chaotic, random movement of the asteroid field suddenly blends into a predictable pattern. With that, the ysoki cuts hard on the controls and brings the Maiden in close to an asteroid, hoping to lure the pirates into a withering field of fire. Captain Okwana gamely gives chase and circles around the asteroid, bringing her ship into a deadly face-off with the Sunrise Maiden, Grix's gambit has paid off in that she has brought the ship's weapons to bear on the Rusty Rivet's weakened frontal shields, though as the old adage goes: When the enemy is within range, so are you.

The Rivet lets loose with a missile and its turreted chain cannon! The tracking weapon knocks out the forward shields in a single blast and heavy rounds from the chain cannon rake the Maiden from bow to stern, sending bits of ceramic plate spinning off into space! Captain Okwana remains ominously silent.

OOGMRound 2 - Gunnery Phase

Rolls.

You guys got a little lucky with the damage rolls - exactly average for the missile and below for the chain gun. The Maiden nearly met its critical threshold. Three more hull point of damage and a critical effect will be applied. Forward shields are currently zero, but they will automatically fill in a few points from the other arcs at the beginning of the Engineering Phase. You may want to either re-balance them or consider turning your front away from the enemy ship.

Nevynxxx: The gyrolaser (EDITOR THE PORT SIDE BUSTER CANNON has the enemy ship in its arc (no range penalty).
Runetide: Turret as always can attack 360
If Matsu fires the buster cannon, I will apply those effects before Vette firing the particle beam. That could tear down their shields nicely for a full-effect heavy particle beam to the grill.

Blackfyre: Remember that R does not advance the ship. I assumed you meant for it to because without that assumption you would have risked crashing.

Matsu braces in his seat as Grix maneuvers. Silly really as the straps wouldn't let him move either way, but it helps to keep his hands steady on the controls. As the ship spins and turns Matsu flips the controls from the flak thrower to a much more fun weapon. "Let's take out those shields then..." he mutters as he pulls the trigger on the Buster canon.

The Field of the Lost, The Diaspora, 6/3/317Matsu opens up with the buster cannon, sending a scraggly barrage of flickering electrical charges through the void. These blasts of energy splash across the Rusty Rivet's shields, instantly ionizing them! The forward shields come down and even the port and starboard shields lose some power. With the gate open, Vette lines up what is essentially a point blank shot and reams the pirate ship with another blast from her heavy particle cannon. This one impacts the port laser cannon and then cuts across the vessel and scores another grievous hit on the ship's power core.

"Whoa! Hang on a second there, Vagabond! We yield, we yield!!," comes Okwana's voice over comms. "Ain't no booty worth dyin' over. You got us, Vagabond. My word as a Free Captain, we surrender. I invite you over to my ready room for parley so we can hear your terms." The young woman's voice seems equal parts angry and impressed.

T'aro can see on their scanners that the Rusty Rivet has closed its missile bays and powered down its energy weapons.

Rolls. I rolled for Runetide to move it along.

I hope a two-round space battle wasn't too anticlimactic, but the dice were definitely with you in this one and Okwana isn't stupid! The pirates are trying to surrender. We'll stay in space combat mode until you accept, if you choose to do so.

T'aro recognizes that they are a bit late in relaying some of the information to the captain, but hey had hoped to not distract Grix in her quite daring and dangerous maneuvers. It had all worked out for the best. They turn to Matsu and relate what they've learned.

"Enemy energy weapons have been powered down, and missile bays closed. There are five creatures on board," they don't see the importance of noting that one of the life-forms is synthetic. It is something that deeply interests them... but is not relevant information for the captain. "Star Hopper class explorer ship. I wasn't able to get any further information in the heat of the moment, but let me see what else I can do, now that things are calm..."

T'aro begins tapping and clicking at their console in the aftermath of the fight.



 


OOC/MechanicsIf allowed, taking 20 on scanning with computers to learn anything else I can about the enemy ship-- 31 total.
