|Green skinned, this half-orc female sports bleached blonde short-cropped hair and pearly tusks jutting from ruby lips. Endowed in both muscle and charm, she carries herself with the grace of someone used to wearing heavy armor and hauling heavy loads. On her neck is a brand that looked to be a menacing looking sigil, but the details are obscured by a tattooed 'X' over it in black ink. Body language is one of someone who is used to casual violence, but she doesn't aggressively pursue it. Vette has a positive, upbeat attitude that reflects her joy over newfound freedom and life. When relaxing and off-duty, she wears light station clothing, a strange mishmash of outfit pieces and parts seemingly assembled from a number of different people's collections. When at work, however, Vette wears heavy armor that's well maintained, clean... and bright neon pink in color with a logo of a landshark emblazoned on the back in black.

Born a slave on Apostae, Vette is a 8th generation half-orc descendant; a family lineage of both parents being half-orcs going back as long as anyone has record. (mis?)fortune found her as a young girl when she was purchased from the Drow by a space pirate crew, the Black Bulettes. A rough and uncomfortable lot, Vette was kept as a cabin girl and general laborer until she was old enough to start taking part in actual piracy. There was when she started to shine. Using her speed, strength, and toughness, she became one of the Black Bulette's best boarding crew. Several years and many successful raids later, she had amassed a fair amount of her own wealth. The Black Bulettes weren't only ship-raiding pirates, however. They had worked out a organic relationship with several of the businesses in the area, including the local asteroid-mining crews of the Diaspora, who were under the Captains express orders to leave them be... as long as they were willing to let some of the crew berth in their shipyards and docks every once and a while when the ship was far away.

"That was fun..." Vette murmurs, sighing as she hauls herself out of the turret seat. She'll pick up her newly re-handled doshko and rest the haft of it on her shoulder. "Y'all coming? I *did* promise to show her what a real boarding action looked like." She'll pause for a half-second. "No, I'm not gonna frag her. She surrendered. Pirates understand if you don't respect the surrender then you won't be afforded it either."

The Diaspora - The Field of the Lost: Attacked!
Mendev is relieved that they had been able to end the fight early. He shakes his head at the absurdity of whole event. He looks over the computer systems that are available to him and not being exactly sure if he understood what was going on with the ship's system he give a call over comms. Aja, how's she look. Any major damages? What type of repairs are we looking at? And timeline?

Mendev looked around. Vette was already hedging towards accepting the Captain Alera's offer as a reasonable event. You don't think it would be a trap? He had heard enough of the Free Captain's code of "honor", but the bounty hunter in him made him cautious. Being invited to their ship was a sure way to get the crew into a vulnerable position. Granted... they probably hadn't seen or heard any news of a group often referred to as the the "Drift Rock Six."

"shlirck" Alright Captain Alera. It is good to see that reason has prevailed. I will say, we have received some minor damages... as per the initial offer. Any deal will include the cost of repairs. "shlirck"

Matsu
Matsu gives it a minute or two for Grix to prep the boarding action and make sure this isn't some trick. As the two ships close and the ships weapons become useless he too extracts himself from a gunnery position.

He moves to his cabin, and retrieves his pistol and the sword. There's no time for the full battle armour, and in the confies of a ship, these will be better weapons should they be needed than the big babies.

Once that's done he moves to join the others at the airlock. "That was almost too easy. But if that missle had hit, it could have gone the other way. Stay cautious, but I think we got them where we want them."

Grix winced when the Rivet’s shots pierced their shields and then impacted on the Maiden’s hull. But then it was time to return fire and both Matsu and Vette did so beautifully. And just like that the fight had already come to an end. The ysoki was torn between still feeling somewhat apprehensive about the asteroid looming so close and being hyper focused due to the drugs now swirling in her system.

The latter were probably the reason for the docking maneuver that she executed being a good deal flashier than it really needed to be. In the end, though, it got the job done and the two ships connected. "Well, this is gonna be interesting, eh?"

Aja Miram

Aja

Aja's reply to Mendev's request about the status of the Sunrise Maiden came back calm and analytical in nature, indicating that she was once again using the full capability of her emotional regulator.

"Video footage of the blast showed some armor being blasted off the hull. Still, there are no indicators of internal damage. A systems check returned negative for any anomalies, and the area beneath the impact site still indicates a solid atmosphere. Another systems check of those sensors also returned no anomalies. Until I personally check the outside of the ship, I can say with only 90% certainty that the blast was absorbed by the Sunrise Maiden's armor and hull superstructure, and failed to penetrate the hull."

But even as Aja recited all that in emotionless monotone, a part of her was rebelling against the emotional regulator. Aja saw her emotions and fear as a handicap when dealing with combat situations. Hence, it made sense to engage the device to its maximum setting when the pirates attacked. But now, all she could focus on was thinking about Edwards' death aboard the 'Fair Price' less than two years ago. And the worst part of it all was that she could only think of Edward dying in an emotionless analytical manner that felt almost painful to Aja.

Not long ago, when she had first met her companions on Absalom Station, Aja mentioned that she hated pirates. The ensuing feeling of anger when she found out that Vette was a former pirate had slowly fled to nonexistence over time. But being attacked by pirates once again brought all that anger back. Only Aja could not feel any of it. But even though her emotional regulator stopped them, Aja could still tell that the emotions were trapped on the other side of her mind. It was an analytical decision on Aja's part to drop the emotional regulator down to 70% effectiveness as the manual for the device warned that if you felt strong emotions with the regulator engaged, there was a reason for you to be feeling them and could cause psychiatric problems if ignored. The surge of anger that she felt was quite intense, and Aja had to grip the engineering console hard. The sound of squealing metal informed Aja that she had accidentally activated the clamp tool in her mechanical arm and slightly bent the engineering console's frame. Deactivating the clamp, Aja took a few deep breaths to get her anger under control. Once she managed to reign in her emotions, Aja decided to keep the regulator on a lower setting from now on so that she could feel something and to prevent another episode like this one.

Though several minutes have passed since Vette asked her question, Aja said over comms,

"I'll be right there."

It was apparent from her tone that Aja was feeling her emotions again and angry for some reason. As Aja walked into the airlock, her frown, aggressive walk, and the liquidator disintegrator pistol drawn and firmly gripped in her mechanical hand confirmed her mental state. Glaring at the airlock door, Aja said slowly,

"Let's go say hi."

OOC: I thought about having Aja turn off the emotional regulator entirely and have her storm angrely for the airlock weapon drawn with the intent to use it but decided against that

The Rusty Rivet, The Diaspora, 6/3/317
right-aligned image
"Dont'cha worry, Captain Ain't-Gonna-Introduce-Yourself," says Captain Okwana's voice over the comms. "We ain't no feral space dogs. Dis here a Free Captain ship and when our word is given, it good. See you on dis side of da airlock."

Grix maneuvers the Maiden in alongside the Rusty Rivet and uses her controls to align and marry up the two ships' airlocks. There is the satisfying thunk of a good seal and through your airlock windows, you can see what looks like a young boy waving at you through the Rivet's airlock portal. Vette explains the protocol: armor on and weapons slung or holstered and the group complies, though some grudgingly. The airlock on the Rivet's side opens and you step on to the pirate ship. There you are greeted by a red haired boy covered in grease and with a blood-stained bandage around his head. His mis-matched eyes are blue and black and he looks like he is 13 or 14 years old at most. When he sees you coming, his face breaks into a nervous and uncontrollable grin and he utters a near incomprehensible greeting in the famous Diasporan version of Taldane: "Damn boys! Why you gotta bomb mah' engine room like dat? Nearly spaced me out da back wit dem por-tickle beams, ya? An' dem bustah cannon sure burnt mah shielz faster'n I puttem up! Puttin' your ship on da no-go list in da future, man!" After a moment of regarding you with a strange mix of fear, friendliness, and consternation he then beckons you to follow him. "Name'a Scrint. Come witmee, da Cap's breaking out da rum bomba." With that he leads you along a dim, rusty corridor leading forward up the port side of the ship.

You follow Scrint through a medical bay and past the galley and a still smoking control and access panel for the port side laser cannon. The first door he comes to opens at his approach and you come in to the ship's ready room. There is a long, sleek metal table in the center of the room that does not match the grungy appearance of the rest of the ship at all. Standing on the other side of the table you see a male vesk, a female korasha lashunta, a male android with light green skin no hair, and an eye-patch, and a young, She is of Mwangi descent.dark-skinned woman with a curve blade on her hip and a red glowing eye augmentation fashioned into an ornate gold eye-patch. On the table are a dozen glasses and two bottles of Castrovellian rum.

"Welcome to da Rusty Rivet," says the woman with an amiable smile. "I am Captain Okwana, and deese space dogs here are my crew. Dat dere is Scrint who'ya already met. Dis here my pilot She gestures to the vesk who stands still and silent with an angry look on his face.Zekanoya Spikesmashah, my gunnah She nudges the lashunta woman, who gives you a half smirk.Korinna Noh, and my science officah The android nods at you.Q4 Now please have a seat, everyone. It a little tight in here, but dat's just cozy, eh? A real Diasporan ain't scared of no small spaces, yeah?"

The captain and her crew all sit down at the table and wait for you to do the same. Them Captain Okwana and Noh uncork the rum and start pouring glasses, first for your crew and then for the Rivet's crew. The pirates all raise their glasses and take a gulp. "To da Sunrise Mee-dahn," says Okwana. After you have either taken a drink or declined to do so, Okwana sets her glass down before her and lays her hands on the table. "So, let da parley begin. You got da upper hand, A Diasporan term for those not from the Diaspora.open space'ahs. You lay out yer preferred terms and we go from dere, yeah?" The pirates all stare across at you with anticipation.

* * *

OOGMBall's in your court. Basically, she has surrendered to you and is waiting to hear what you want to let them go on their way now. You can ask for credits, cargo, whatever you can imagine. Just be warned that there are limits to the Free Captain's honor. If you demand too steep a price, you could wind up back in a fight.

MatsuAs the airlock opens, Matsu nods at Vette. His weapon holstered. The small kid brings a smile to his face, even though mentally translating the chatter is exhausting. The subtle jubilation the kid gives off is enough to class him as not yet a threat.

At the conference table, Matsu acknowledes each of the opposition crew as they are introduced. As soon as it's polite to respond, he nods at his fellow Lashunta. "Well met Korinna Noh, your missile almost ruined my day. It was skillfully launched. " He sits to one side, leaving the focal seat for Mendev, and looks to Okwana, "My Name is Matsu Soryn. It is an honour to drink with you." With that, he waits for Mendev to take control.

The Diaspora - The Field of the Lost: Attacked!
Mendev stood leaning over the Captain's console, but his head was looking at Aja. When the talented mechanic gave her report, Mendev raised an eyebrow. Something was off about the young woman. The report had been largely immaculate and had all the information he would need when it came to demanding repairs for the ships. Yet something just seemed off about Aja. He knew about the emotional regulator she had had installed, and he chalked it up to that. But to a man who made a living talking and examining people for information, the new augmentation was unsettling. As if he'd already established a baseline profile on her, and he'd come to find that not was the his impression of her slightly off. It was completely wrong.

Mendev stood up straight and gave a wry nod. He smoothed down his new vest slowly and tugged down to ensure everything in his appearance was straight. The interlocking polymer hexagons of vesk brigandine armor stood out in the v-cut of the vest and from his shoulders where the exquisite outfit did not cover. Ok... good. He said over interphone-comms and looked over to T'aro and Grix. Alright, lets get us strapped up. Be ready for anything, but let us remain... civil.

The Diaspora - The Field of the Lost: The Rusty Rivet!
At the airlocks Mendev maintained a calm demeanor on the outside. In the inside, he knew he was a sham. A few weeks before, he would have laughed in the face of anyone who would have read his Harrows to be foretelling of his "Captainhood." Still, he'd made his living pretending to be someone he never was. So it was that he took on another role.

He looked to Vette. If the woman had any worries, she didn't show it. Matsu too, was serious and quite. A bearing to be envied. So he decided to steal that. Mendev stood straighter. Head high, a demeanor of seriousness, with cockiness and haughtiness.

The boy name Scrint was an interesting one. He raised an eyebrow at the kid, but stayed silent. Nodding he asked to be followed. The accent and the mannerisms, Mendev replayed over in his head a few times before he filed away for a future use.

During the introductions Mendev delays responding to the introduction. In his mind he weighs the benefits and cost of revealing to the pirate, who they were and the nature of their business. He wasn't confident Captain Alera or her crew would be too happy with a bounty hunter aboard. They might think their whole intent is to collect a warrant in Free Captain Space. Still, it wasn't like they weren't exactly the most incognito group. There faces had been getting plastered all over the news over the last few days. Even if the folks didn't recognized their faces or their names, there was almost nil chance they wouldn't recognize Vette's vibrant armor. If there was to be any deception it would be at a great disadvantage and at the risk of losing any goodwill they may have garnered from not blasting them into oblivion outright. No, this was not the time for any of those deceptions. They'd have to play it as straight as they could.

Finally Mendev unfolds his hands from where they had been laid over each other at his front. In a motion he raises them up in a prayer like fashion and brings them up to his lips. A smile spreads behind his fingers, and finally he drops them to his side. I really wish you had heeded my warnings earlier, my friends. As the saying goes; time is money... and I assure you we have none to waste. He says with an amused tone. Mendev gives a slow shrug and the smile turns lopsided as he speaks through the barely contained grin. Rest assured though, I rather we make our acquaintances like this. I am Mendev Malone, current Captain of the Sunrise Maiden. These here are my comrades in arms and crew. Mendev's open palmed and joined fingers gesture down towards Grix. Our pilot, Grix. As quick with her fingers as she is with her eyes. Then he motions towards Vette. Our resident pirate specialist and gunner, Vette. If you haven't heard of her by now, you've just haven't been paying attention. This gentleman here is Matsu. Our other gunner. But to say it so simply would be any injustice. I am convinced his skill with the ship's weapons is influenced by his remarkable ability with his guns. By all of my accounts the man should be a certified open heart surgeon. That precise. Mendev turns slightly to the left with his fingers again joining together in a tepee formation and points them towards T'aro. Our Science Officer, T'aro. Mendev pauses at this, pondering how best to introduce the shirren. A doctor by trade, an euthanizer by necessity. Sometimes, rabid dogs just have to be put down. Mendev purses his lips as he considers his own words after the fact. He turns completely back and with one hand lifted he motions to Aja. And Aja, the brilliant mechanic whom keeps our vagabond in immaculate state despite it's age.
After the introductions are over, Mendev sits. He waits to see if T'aro mentions anything about the food or at the very least that their host eats or drinks before he tries his own.

Mendev sets down his glass, and intertwines his fingers before he speaks. Parlay then. I'll make this simple and fair. We are short on time, and have important matters to attend to which may bring the Sunrise Maiden into battle to bear upon a group of Devourer Cultists. You're stint has cost us greatly. Full repairs. Plus two thousand credits a piece for each of my crew. For their loss of time and to allay the induced mental distress. On top of that, we are looking for the aforementioned cultist. To this end is why we are here in Free Captain territory at all. If you have any information that may help us expedite our mission... we'd be interested in that as well.

T'aro
right-aligned image
Credit to Raul Vilela
Prior to boarding, T'aro tried to let Mendev know that the enemy captain's ship had little in the holds-- but some technological components were stacked in the back. It was difficult, though, in all the fast movement and hubbub... They worry that they were not heard...

T'aro had to admit that they did not understand anything about this situation. The Sunrise Maiden had been attacked. It could have easily resulted in the death of the entire crew, or some of them, for either side. And the enemy crew and captain were acting like it was just a prank. Perhaps it was just a difference in pirate culture. T'aro would have to ask Vette about it later. But for the moment, they were just sullen and angry. They worried that, any moment they would need to finish the combat. Mendev's prerogative that the party remain "civil" meant that T'aro was going to remain "quiet."

Seeing the child engineer, T'aro becomes even more frustrated-- that they would put a child at risk with such a risky attack.

T'aro can only barely bring themselves to respond during the introductions. Fortunately, Mendev handled it. They don't love the description as a Euthanizer by necessity... but they can't deny that it's true. The presence of their blade at their side weighs heavily.

At the captain's offer, T'aro does then mention-- "Though perhaps some of the terms could be changed, depending on how you feel about your cargo, and its contents. Ours cans revealed that you have some interesting technological components aboard." They were making a bit of a gambit, bringing this up though Mendev is the one doing the negotiating... but they were also on edge, and angry.

OOC/Mechanics Apologies for not passing along info about the cargo hold sooner. As mentioned in the OOC thread, I have been kind of swamped. I tried to slip that information in, but I'm doing so in a way that might screw with the negotiations. Fingers crossed that I haven't ruined things?

Vette will take point on the boarding action, a huge grin on her face. To some degree, she hoped that they would break protocol and take shots at them while they're walking aboard, but on the other hand, they were on a mission and didn't really have the time or personnel to simply kill them all and take their ship. Which would be a waste. She gives Matsu a return nod, keeping her Doshko in hand but not ignited when the airlock opens.

Coming inside, she simply acts her part, being the muscle. Didn't seem that necessary, though, as the pirate crew was keeping their honor intact. When Mendev began negotiations, she simply stood just to the side of him, her arms crossed while she tapped the haft of her doshko against her shoulder armor. Being serious, and all, she only smiled a little bit during the proceedings.

Aja

Aja frowned at Vette when the half-orc explained the protocols here and begrudgingly holstered her disintegrator pistol. Her first introduction to the crew of the Rusty Rivet threw her off when Aja found herself looking at the kid engineer named Scrint. While Aja still maintained her frown, it was evident that she was also confused. Looking around as they went, Aja kept glancing at Vette and the others while wondering what would happen next.

Being offered a drink by the boisterous Captain Okwana was not what Aja expected. Aja ignored the offered drink and stayed quiet as introductions were made. When Matsu and Mendev started by asking for recompensation with T'aro talking about gaining some electronics in the Rusty Rivet's cargo hold instead of payment, Aja was surprised and reacted a bit hastily,

"What is going on? We're not here to get bought off!"

Given the current situation, Aja realized that she should have stopped there but couldn't help herself from glaring at Captain Okwana and adding,

"They should be going to prison, not buying their way free to go attack someone else!"

Aja's mechanical hand grasped air next to her holstered pistol as if she was thinking of pulling the weapon free.

Vette will double-take at Aja and frown. "Prison? Where?" She asked, cutting Aja off. "You don't understand, this isn't some core world where there's an 'all mighty force of justice'. And if there had been, they'd be taken down by the free captains. Cool your thrusters, girl." she warned, looking specifically at her companion's gun hand. "Besides, taking their **** is a worse punishment. Pirates take their property very seriously. And if you shoot her here, it's only going to make our work in the area harder from here on."

She looks over at Captain Okwana and shrugs. "Sorry," she apologizes gruffly. "She's new to this kind of stuff."

The Diaspora - The Field of the Lost: The Rusty Rivet!
Mendev nods as T'aro suggest cargo as payment as well. He figured if the shirren had mentioned it must have been for a reason. When Aja began speaking Mendev played it as cool as he could. HIs hands were folded over each other on the table. It was at this point that he'd realize he'd never had really asked in depths questions to Aja about her life prior to having met them that fateful day at the spaceport. He'd now realize that the mechanics's distress against the pirates may have been about more than just a simple injury to one's pride. He listened as Vette attempted to allay Aja's frustrations.

Vette had hit the nail on the head. This was Free Captain territory. If they wanted to have an inkling chance of finding the Cultists they would have to secure cooperation.

Mendev smiled, and gave a slow long shrugged. As I said. Induced mental distress.

The Rusty Rivet, The Diaspora, 6/3/317Captain Okwana and her crew sit back and listen to Mendev's proposal, each seeming to pay close attention to his words. Okwana's brow furrows as Mendev outlines the offer and T'aro chimes in about the parts in her cargo hold. The vesk, Zekanoya, leans over and whispers something into her ear and she punches something into her comm unit that instantly causes Scrint to look at his own comm unit. She is about to speak when Aja steps into the discussion and proposes her and her crew's arrest. She throws her head back and laughs at this, as does her crew, with the exception of Q4 who maintains an emotionless mien. None of them respond with words, however, and they nod with good grace as Vette explains the realities of the Diaspora.

When things have settled again, Captain Okwana speaks. "Hmm. I t'ink you done dis before, yeah Cap'n Malone? You squeezin' us poor buccaneers for more'n we're worth! Two thousand?! C'mon man, we can't eat da rocks you know! I say we give you one thousand a person, yeah? Dat's fair for your trouble. We'll throw in half da' parts we got so maybe you fix up dat Maiden of yours even nicer, yeah? Dem's salvage parts of course, not ill-gotten, you got my word as a pirate on dat," she explains with a mischievous smirk. "And Scrint--" at this, she looks down the table at her young engineer "--What you assess for da damages we done to deir boat?"

Scrint shrugs. "Shielz absorbed da missile warhead. Chain gun took a few chunks outta deir applique is all. I reckon a hundred or maybe a hundred fitty UPBs should do it."

"We make it two hundred den, yeah? A thousand a piece, half our parts, and two hundred UPBs to get yer armor whole again. Dat's fair, yeah?" She holds out her hands and flashes you a winning smile and a wink. Then she sits back with her glass and swirls the rum around in it for a moment before taking a drink. "Dat's for da battle. If dose terms is good for you, yeah, then I t'ink we can den sit and finish our rum and have a little chat about de information to, ah, expedite yer mission, yeah?" She sits back and waits for your answer. Her crew continues to drain their glasses and keep fairly respectable poker faces, except for Scrint who seems to now be playing a game on his comm unit.

OOGMThe parts she is offering would be transferred to your hold. They have no monetary value, but would enable you to upgrade your ship the next time you gain a level, should you be someplace where Sid Sneed is not available.

MatsuLetting Mendev speak was definietly the right option. Matsu struggles to keep his antenae from twitching as the "captain" makes his ludicrusly high offer. But then, it looks like it paid off. He tries to keep his emotions in check, conscious that his opposite number will be able to empathicly read them. To occupy his hands he takes a cue from Okwana, and brings out his own comm unit to tap a message to the rest of the crew.

Should probably have pitched higher if that's her return offer. I think we take that offer, and use the good will not bargening harder should leave us to get the information we need. Maybe it's her way of keeping the price down, but I think she knows something.

He hits send, and then reaches out to see if he can tell what the other crew is feeling.

Matsu OOC
Happy to make a roll here, if needed, but what surface emotions is the other crew giving off RuffDove?
