ApplicationName: Celeste the Ashen
Race: Human
Gender: Female
Archetype: Sanctioned Psyker

Appearance: Celeste used to be a beautiful woman, with rich brown hair, and soulful green eyes. Being exposed to warp changes a person though inside and out. Celeste is no exception. Her long, lank hair is an ashen white. Her eyes have turned a deep blood red that seems to glower with menace no matter what expression her face wears. Her features have turned pale and wan. Overtop her armour she wears a voluminous cobalt blue robe, her hood raised to shroud her features in shadow. The sleeves of her robe are singed and blackened at the cuff.

Personality: As are many who have been touched by the Warp, Celeste is unnerving to be around. Constantly focusing on things that no one else can see and eschewing the social niceties at odd times. When not succumbing to the eccentricities of a human who has gone through the rigorous process of becoming a sanctioned Psyker, Celeste is sanguine, serene and zealous. For all that the destruction and death swirl in every moment of the 41st Millenium, she is the eye of the storm. Celeste is notoriously difficult to ruffle socially without direct provocation. Her varied past means that she is comfortable at a nobles dinner table just as much as she is in the trenches. The only place that causes her to be disconcerted are the underbellies of society, those portions of the imperium that impede the war machine and the righteous crusade of the Emperor in their small petty ways. Even then, she is at most reduced to silence and the menacing glower of those ember like eyes from underneath the cowl of her robes.

Background: Celeste was born into the administratum of the Hive World Mordian, her parents high-ranking members of the Imperial Bureaucracy. She herself showed an aptitude for the same scholarly work and was steered toward such things so as to avoid the debilitating, dangerous and altogether short-lived lives of normal Hab workers. Naturally, everything changed when she first began to get glimpses of the warp, though the discovery of what she had become was swift and she was interred before she could inflict much damage.

While Celeste's studious proclivities and devout outlook helped somewhat in the process of becoming a Sanctioned Psyker, it was truly a strength of will yet unseen that saw her through the trials. The rigours of becoming a Psyker changed her in nearly every way, those that knew her before her transformation would be unlikely to recognize her save her own parents. Being judged of sufficient quality, Celeste is shipped off to the Gilead sector where her talents can come to the aid of the forces of the Imperium.

Questions:
You have a friend or family member serving in the Mordian Iron Guard. Are they a reliable soldier or a troublemaker? They harbor a secret that they've only ever shared with you. Detail that.
Celeste's older brother Cabrian and her were close growing up, very close. The man was charming, accomplished and besting even Celeste in being the apple of their parents eye. In short he could do no wrong. That's why it was such a shock the day her very troubled brother confided in her that he had killed a man. No, murdered a man. Celeste remembers to this day how remorseless he seemed and the reason that he was troubled because he felt he should feel more. Celeste could and would not turn her brother in, so she felt quite relieved when Cabrian decided to enlist. He told her it was to cleanse his soul, he told everyone else it was to serve honourably. To do this day part of her wonders if he did so he could kill again, without remorse, without hesitation, without skulking in the shadows.
What was your most troubling experience in dealing with the warp so far?
There Celeste was, fighting alongside her squadron of PDF scouring a heretic nest from their entrenched position. In a last ditch attempt to appease their filthy gods the heretics mounted a final charge. Celeste opened herself up to the warp, starting to channel the energies into a devastating attack when las-fire caught her armor in the chest and knocked the wind out of her. For that brief moment, when she was stumbling backwards unable to breathe, control slipped away. For a brief moment she saw a pair of eyes staring at her through the abyss. Eye's that only she could see. Eye's that hungered for her soul. And then the moment was gone. It shook her to the core, but thankfully her squadron rallied to her defense. In the name of the talisman who had turned fearsome opponents to ash again and again they cut down every last heretic in a ferocious barrage from their lasguns and autocannons.

Name Brother Raguel
Race Space Marine
Gender male
Archetype Tactical Marine

Appearence. Raguel is clad in the bone and dark green power armour of the Angels of Redemption, successor chapter to the Dark Angels. Out of it he's a blond giant. His blue eyes are sad looking. Scars crisscross his entire body.

Personality Raguel is quiet and methodical in his work. Devoted to the protection of the Imperium. He likes to read in his spare time. Raguel is feeling a little frustrated as he knows that he hasn't been told everything about the current mission.

Background
Raguel grew up on a death world. The strongest, smartest of his tribe, he was naturally amongst the first recruits chosen by the Angels of Redemption. The transition from a savage to noble space marine was not an easy one.
Raguel's tribe was not the only one the Angels of Redemption recruited from. Other tribe members, including the runner up to Raguel, Abidiel were chosen. People from other tribes, and indeed other worlds also came aboard. He went from the top of the totem pole, to the bottom. Becoming the butt monkey of his scout unit.
After a lot of setbacks, Raguel knuckles down hard. This is inspired by a talk with Abidiel, who restores Raguel's confidence by reminding him that the Angels chose him first as he was the best of their tribe, and how hard he worked to be that champion.
Surprising himself, Raguel shows a talent for investigation. Finding things out is a good skill for a scout, and would have been wasted on his home world. Becomes a better soldier too. The assessments from his trainers improve to almost glowing terms.
One of his last tests was the Grand Melee. This was a free for all, last man standing the winner. Non-lethal weaponry was used but you were restricted to the gear given at the start.
Abidiel went down respectfully in the mid to end portion of the melee. Raguel did much better as he is one of the final three. He swears when he sees whom he's up against. Leon, probably the best of the year, and his toady helper. Worse still he's out in the open with very little ammunition left. So what does Raguel do? He picks up a knocked out brother and uses him to absorb the shots from the pair. Leon's face was a picture when Raguel used his last shot on him, after eliminating the toady.
Raguel's training sergeant was a hard bastard to please, and Raguel was fully expecting a telling off for his unconventional method of winning. Instead the sergeant laughed and told him he had passed.
Leon however was outraged. He claimed Raguel cheated. This cut short shift with the assessors however. Despite Raguel offering him a handshake, Leon stormed off. For Raguel the matter was closed.
Seasons passed, so Abidiel and Raguel were made into tactical marines. Abidiel was selected for chaplain training. Raguel was a bog standard marine. Years and campaigns passed.
Raguel saw his old friend again when Master Raziel summoned them along with a few others. Raguel informed them that they would be joining him for a secret mission to hunt down a dangerous individual. The Master was very vague on why a squad of space marines were being sent to capture one man, or what he had done to garner such attention. It was only after leaving the room he realised Leon was picked to go as well.
When on the mission, the master split them up to cover more ground. That's when things went wrong fast. Marines started to miss their call in times, Raguel lost contact with everyone. Until finally he got a message from Abidiel, telling him where to meet him. Immediately Abidiel sounds off, seriously off. When his brother marine gets the name of their home world wrong, Raguel knows it's a trap. He doesn't know what the hell is going, or what to do next.

A few questions:
1) Would it be possible to play a commissar tied to a naval vessel of some sort?
2) There are commissars who are in charge of PDF or more than one planet. Lex says that they tend to be aging men, or ones who disciplinary action have been made against. I might be interested in playing one of these figures, though the power dynamic might be too broad for a game like this and I might have to downgrade it.
3) Would we be allowed to play a more minor rouge trader alongside the Heartlands faction?
Thoughts?

Ambition Class Cruiser

Character ApplicationName: Vasal Tarabay
Race: Human
Gender: Male
Archetype: Rouge Trader

Appearance: Vasal Tarabay's Praetorian roots are clear to anyone familiar with the planet. His harsh jawline and slick blonde hair makes him look like a poster for Praetorian recruitment ads. If it wasn't for the long scar breaking his once regal forehead, and his half sliced ear, he would have been the ideal image of a Praetorian officer. He is a bit taller than the average Praetorian, adding to his presence and stature. He usually keeps his face clean shaven, though at times he enjoys sporting a small mustache. Since his hair grows fast he has been known to change his look every few weeks. His hair though is always neatly trimmed in typical military fashion.

To further this image, Vasal wore the uniform of an Imperial Naval officer, a Captain to be exact. The name tag, as well as the title of the ship has been stripped, instead replaced with a patch showing the coat of arms of the Tarabay House; A Serval Cat curled around a plasma gun. Unlike most Rouge Traders, Vasal wasn't garbed in exotic and flamboyant clothes, instead preferring the regimented look of a Naval officer. But still his travels did have their influence on his dress. A wide brimmed hat from some distant human settlement usually graced his head, and he had a tendency to wear unusual arm bracelets of various shapes and sizes, most hand woven by very nimble hands.

Personality: Vasal is a stern unforgiving man. He has the airs of an imperial officer, and doesn't attempt to hide it. His words is law to any he holds sway to, and he has no problem reminding someone of lesser status how dangerous it could be to cross him. He does not tolerate failure, and is quick to punish those who disappoint him.

This does not mean that he is ruthless or needlessly violent. If someone fails due to their own incompetents, Vasal has no problem putting a bolt in their skull. But if someone failed due to situations outside their control Vasal is willing to look at the whole picture. He greatly awards discipline and bravery among his men, and has been known to be fair when dealing with internal disputes. He is well respected by those under his command, and is known to be very sharing of his spoils. This stands in strict opposition of most Praetorians who continue to keep the lower classes beneath them as much as possible.

Background: Vasal Tarabay was born into a wealthy noble family on Praetoria. Like many of the wealthy families of Praetoria, House Tarabay made its fortune off the back of the planet's factory workers. House Tarabay was seen as a rising power on the planet, with many believing that it might take up governorship of the planet. That might have been a possibility once, but politics played out differently. The current Governor, worried about a possible challenge to his position used his contacts to grant House Tarabay a Warrant of Trade. While this granted the house even more wealth and prestige, it made it impossible for them to attain any political position on the planet.

Vasal Tarabay was lucky to be born into such a privileged position. He was gifted with the best teachers for an array of subjects. His father, Javet Tarabay, was away for most of his life, spending his time exploring the unknown. Javet was very successful in his adventures, and sent back most of his wealth. Vasal was raised primarily by a caretaker since his mother spent her time managing their holdings throughout the planet.

When he was of age, Vasal joined the Imperial Navy. His mother had wanted him to take over managing their factories, and his father wanted him to assist on his journeys. Vasal hated the idea that their family could have been in a position of real authority. He saw his father's adventures as profitable, but mostly fantastical journeys. And he saw his mother as just balanced budgets; nothing more than a glorified accountant. He felt that by joining the military he could make his way through the ranks and bring more prestige to the family name.

Vasal was a good officer, well versed in naval tactics. He quickly became a captain, commanding a battle cruiser, protecting merchant fleets around Segmentum Tempestus. This was not a simple job, as frequent dark eldar raids, as well as Ork waaghs, caused constant turmoil in the region. Vasal greatly enjoyed his work, but he constantly felt that he wasn't able to gain any promotions due to his assignments.

Everything changed for him two years ago. His father died after repealing an ork boarding party. As the oldest living relative, Vasal inherited the Warrant of Trade. At first he was furious. He saw this as the destruction of his career. Then he was contacted by the Admirals in charge of the Segmentum Tempestus fleet. They had been watching his loyalty and military prowess and felt he could remain an asset. They offered him a position in Naval Intelligence. Using his position as a Rouge Trader, he could gain access to people that the Imperial Navy would have more difficulty spying on. While Vasal wouldn't gain the notoriety that he wanted, he saw it as a possible way to gain other forms of political power.

Note that what follows is simply 'my understanding' of the setting and may not perfectly reflect what others pull from the great void that is 40k canon. Still, since I'm running this I guess this is as close to canon as one will get for this game.

Commissars are an oddity. Technically, they function outside the standard rank structure as they are disciplinarian and morale officer. They are often assigned positions of authority and those positions can change as the need arises. Most often, a guardsman or other enlisted person will defer to the commissar as the point of authority given their mandate to ensure loyalty 'by any means necessary'.

So really, a commissar could appear in any Militarum structure or even among the Astartes. Who they have authority over will always be a question that is most reliant on how much they can justify the need to exert said authority.

I'm 100% willing to work with someone who wants to play a commissar as regards where they've been assigned and what their history involves. Give me a concept that you think is cool and we can work up the details on how it works.

A rogue trader is absolutely an option. The Varonius dynasty is the major player in the system but by no means the only. A rival house would certainly find a lot of reasons to ally with Fylamon against them. And rogue traders are pretty damn cool.

Thank you for the response.

At the moment I am thinking of a Commissar or a Rouge Trader who operates as a member of the Imperial Navy Intelligence which has not been flushed out much in 40k lore. Basically he would be a spy for the Imperial Navy/Commissariat. But this would tie him to a naval vessel or a planetary unit rather than an Imperial guard regiment.

Interesting thoughts, and definitely doable either way you approach it.

Not sure if you have the book but here is a snippet of info, specifically the archetype ability from those two archetypes. Might help you decide.

Commissar: The commissar and all allies within 15 meters add +Rank (initially 1) to resolve tests (things like fear and enduring hardship apply there). The commissar adds +Rank to intimidation tests, including interaction attacks (ways to use non-combat skills in combat).

Rogue Trader: Add +Rank to all persuasion tests and to influence tests to acquire goods or services. They also start with a ship and get to choose their weapon and armor options from a variety of choices rather than assigned gear, so that's something.

Would you happen to have a link to any of these classes and the core book if it's online? I keep getting a board game reference when I google them.

I can't back out of having my own ship.... Even if it is just a fluff piece. And the Rogue Trader ability does seem to jive a bit closer to what I was thinking of. I might give him a military background though to add to what I was looking for with the commissar/Imperial Guard theme.

I do not have the book. Once I pay off a bunch of bills I can buy it. That would most likely be at the end of this month. Would that be alright at least for the start of the game?

Is Warhammer 40k Wrath and Glory also called 8th edition? I looked on my Scribd account for the books and found two that say Wrath and Glory but the rest say 8th edition. Just want to make sure I have the correct books

Nabiki the Hive Ganger
right-aligned image
Nabiki
  • Name: Nabiki
  • Race: Human
  • Gender: Female (age 19)
  • Archetype: Hive Ganger

  • Appearance:
Nabiki is a little on the short side with a wiry and petite physique. She keeps her black hair clipped at shoulder height and her bangs trimmed short. Nabiki always has a readied smirk as if she knows something you don't, which she usually does. She is vain about her appearance and keeps herself relatively clean for a Hive Ganger. Nabiki wears no makeup or jewelry, and when the gang goes to war, she gets away with minimal face paint. And while she can get by on the bare necessity's, Nabiki likes, and wants, all the things she missed as a child.

  • Personality:
Nabiki comes off as someone cold and calculating that finds humor in other peoples troubles. While it is true that she finds amusement at the expense of others, she uses this as a mask, unwilling to become friends with anyone. She keeps everyone at arm's length as they are only going to die anyway, just like all her friends and family had died. Beneath the mask, Nabiki is intelligent and cunning with a will that surpasses her fellow Hive Gangers. While she is afraid of making friends, Nabiki has the drive to better herself above all else. Nabiki is not into all that Honor and Glory crap portrayed in the Imperium propaganda, but she has found that a reputation of keeping your word opened all kinds of doors.

  • Background:
Nabiki once had a family. Her grandparents were refugees from one of the many conflicts that rose up the Imperium. But they're all gone now. Her parents, her grandparents, and her two sisters, all recycled for the greater good of the Hive. They died when she was thirteen years old, and she fell down thew the cracks of society, ending up living in the lower levels, the Underhive. Those early years opened her eye's to a whole new world, one that Nabiki vowed to crawl out of on her own terms. While she was young, she was also smart. She did everything she had to do to get into a gang for protection and quickly rose up the ranks.

Unlike others in the Gang, Nabiki did not use intimidation and physical acts of violence to get her way. Oh, she will shoot you dead without blinking if she had to, but Nabiki tended to use that as a last resort. No, she used other people as her primary weapons. It was well known in the gang that Nabiki could get you almost anything, for a price. And when you angered her, those people tended to make her displeasure known. While she accepts money and gear in trade, Nabiki's central resource was 'favors'. She got quite good at covering herself with such favors to the point that Nabiki felt safe once more. It was an illusion, of course, one that she knew intimately. But she enjoyed it none the less.

Of course there was always people who owed Nabiki more than they could pay and she used them as her agents until they paid off their debt. Any information they could find she wanted. Unknown to anyone else, Nabiki was looking for a way out. She had grown in influence within the gang and thanks to a few untimely deaths it was looking like she would soon be chosen for a leadership position. And Nabiki had worked hard at being the power behind the Gang leadership, so that was something Nabiki did not want as all leaders had bullseyes on their backs. Luckily for her, Nabiki's agents brought back news that there were strangers in the lower levels. Offworlders. Could this be her chance?
  • Additional questions:

    • Someone in the gang is out to get you. Who is it, what do they want and, most importantly, do you know about it yet?
Koda Isst was never a friend of Nabiki's, and he has alway's been jealous of her. As a Gang under-lieutenant, Koda was the same rank as Nabiki but had less authority and almost no influence within the Gang. Unbenonced to her, Koda secretly desired a A ring of keys, each one encoded to a stasis vault on a different world(will buy with BP).trinket of hers. Someone who Nabiki pissed off convinced Koda that the keys unlocked hidden caches throughout the gang territory where she kept all her blackmail information. He is trying to find the locations first and might decide to torture the information out of her if he can get support from other gang members. Nabiki knows Koda Isst is up to something, but she does not suspect the full extent of his plans.

    • The strangers who pulled you out of the gutter were on a retrieval assignment for Lord-Militant Fylamon. What did you do to impress them?
The strangers had been looking for something, and Nabiki offered her services to help guide them to their destination, for a fee of course. When they were ambushed, and the rest of her crew split, Nabiki stayed and helped them fight off the mutant gang's attack. When asked why she didn't run like the rest of her scum friends she merely said, "Once I make a deal, I stick with it." Impressing them with her integrity...for a Hive Ganger.

    • You got an I.O.U. out of the deal, too. From who and what for?
Once Nabiki had delivered her charges to their destination, they found out it was guarded by the same mutant gang that ambushed them earlier. When the group starts making plans for a frontal assault Nabiki says she knows of a back way into the place. But since their agreement with her was merely for her to get them to and from their destination, Nabiki insisted on making another agreement. When asked by the one leading the group, "How much?" She simply smiled with her patented smirk and said, "Why don't we just say you owe me a If she has to, Nabiki will use the favor to go with them.favor."

So we had a pipe burst in the walls of the apartment I both live in and manage. Big mess, lots of work for me. Questions will be delayed until tomorrow when I will be more aware and less covered in boiling water.

I do not have the book. Once I pay off a bunch of bills I can buy it. That would most likely be at the end of this month. Would that be alright at least for the start of the game?
You are not required to have the book to play. I can walk people through the creation easily enough. You will probably want access to the book as the game progresses so you can reference things yourself, but I make every effort to make the game accessible.

Really sorry to hear that! Good luck.

I got as much as I could today. I was hoping to get more done but unluckily that is not the case. I have a lot more in my head though. I am going to go the Naval Intelligence route still.

Always loved the setting so I'm super interested. I'm thinking either like a Devastator Marine or a Heavy Weapons Specialist Guardsman type if that would be possible to do. Someone that throws heavy ordinance from range.
