Upon a Shaded Glen [Ars Magica]

Game NameUpon a Shaded Glen
Game SystemArs Magica 5th Edition
ThemeExploration and Survival
FlavourHighish Fantasy, Largely Ahistorical
Plot SummaryThe Praeco of Transylvania has believed for some time that there is a nest of subversive hedge wizards held up in a regio Northwest of Bac where the Drava meets the Danube. The project spent another few years being passed down through the ranks of Tremere who couldn't be bothered with it directly until it eventually fell to Fierro, the Tremere in charge of the expedition. You and a number of other young magi were recruited from your home tribunals by Fierro or by Azhir the mysterious Maga he travels with. You were promised a favorable charter privileges as Coloniea (magical settlers to the tribunal) with the regio as your covenant site if you were willing to assist in the seizing of the location.

For whatever reason you accepted the assignment and went with the expedition through a gateway woven of trees. You find yourselves in a wide field with tall broad leaved grass up to your waist and enormous trees on all sides. Fierro, Azhir, and the bookish elder Magus with them take a perfunctory look around and tell you to scout around while they secure this site for the moment.

This will be a saga about exploration and survival. The saga will come in roughly three parts. Exploring the regio to find a covenant site. Finding and executing a strategy to exit the regio. Living happily ever after as Coloniea in Transylvania under the ever watchful eye of house Tremere.

Sounds great! I like the combination of exploration with mystery. I have an idea for probably a Flambeau that I'd love to play.

Character Name: Valeria
Character House: Flambeau
Birth Place: covenant in Provencal probably
Parens' Tribunal: Provencal most likely
Magical Specialty: Manipulating her own magic along with Life Boost and Life-Linked Spontaneous Magic
Character Areas of Interest: Necromancy

Background:
Raised at a covenant dominated dominated by Flambeau magi, she has always desired to be a great mage within the order, and great in Flambeau terms leans toward combat and adventure. Now she has passed her gauntlet and it's time to make a name for herself.

Partial Virtue and Flaw list:
Affinity with Rego [1], Life Boost [1], Life-Linked Spontaneous Magic [3], Minor Magical Focus: Manipulating Her Own Spells [1], Puissant Rego [1], Skilled Parens [1]
Ambitious: Greatest Hermetic Warrior Ever (or something similar) [-3], Covenant Upbringing [-1], Infamous: Necromancer [-1], Small Frame [-1]

I understand you are trying to do something with Necromancy and then manipulating your Necromanced things I just don't see how it is supposed to work.

The main magical focus isn't necromancy. Rather, it's being able to manipulate her magic extremely well (Maintaining the Demanding Spell, Suppressing the Wizard's Handiwork, etc. in addition to expending Fatigue). Given that she has this talent at manipulating her own magic, she will focus on preparing things in advance to unleash when needed.

Necromancy works well for that: make a bunch of animal corpses and animate them so they can be unleashed upon your enemies. So necromancy would be a favorite method of applying those talents. But I'm not aiming for a one-trick pony. Other things can be done well, too, such as creating a Pilum of Fire that lasts and can be moved about (yes, extra magnitudes).

I played around with numbers a bit. It looks like I can pull off what I was thinking without Affinity with Rego and without Puissant Rego. That frees things up even more, including the option of House Tremere.

Virtues and Flaws at gauntlet: Puissant/Affinity Imaginem, Second Sight, Skilled Parens, Minor Satyr Blood, Venus blessing, Gentle gift, binding the gift, fairie magic
Unnatural magic, Major lecherous, minor carefree, magical animal companion (magical satyr lover?), ability block martial, small frame

Post gauntlet initiation virtues and flaws: spell timing, glamour, harmless magic, poor memory faces, social handicap (colorful hair and clothing)

I also want to bind the familiar pre-gauntlet because I want to get something out of the virtue binding the gift

Augustinus ex Verditius

Character Name: Augustinus ex Verditius
Character House: Verditius
Birth Place: Munich
Parens' Tribunal: Rome (Verdi Covenant)
Magical Specialty: Generalist; Finesse-based Magicks
Character Areas of Interest: Building a legend as an artificer
Virtues: Puissant Finesse; Strong Faerie Blood (Faerie God - Wayland Smith); Skilled Parens; Inventive Genius; Affinity with Finesse; Puissant Magic Theory; Personal Vis Source; Puissant Parma Magicka
Flaws: Blatant Gift; Ambitious (Major); Wrathful (Minor); Loose Magic; Legacy (Wayland Smith); Bound Casting Tools

Description:

The man standing before you looks more like a smith than a magus. He’s tall, broad and muscular, and has a shock of red hair and an giant bushy red moustache. His eyes are pure black, without pupil or white, and with just a hint of a red ember glow. When he speaks, his deep, growling voice sets your teeth on edge, his teeth are visibly pointed, and he has a peculiar accent that makes him hard to understand. He smells unpleasantly of blood, or iron, and when he casts a spell, the smell intensifies and also smells unpleasantly heated. The handle of a huge sword is visible over his shoulder, and he’s wearing chainmail with an odd bluish-black hue. A thick chain made of iron is loosely wrapped in several loops around his neck, and a number of strangely shaped iron keys hang from it.

Background:

Born in the city of Munich, child of a master smith, Augustinus had every opportunity to be normal. However, something about him was off, even as a baby, and it gradually got worse as he got older. However, he took to the craft of forging quickly and easily, so his family was forgiving of his strangeness. When he was only 6 years old, his father woke up in the middle of the night because he heard the forge running. Fearing fire, he ran to the forge, but he found Augustinus in the room, working at the forge competently, and seeming to be taking instructions from a voice only he could hear. His father observed quietly, and realized that the boy was asleep, but being taught to forge by some mysterious dream. His father left again, and they never spoke of what happened, but he put the boy to work during the day and checked on the forge periodically through the night. Augustinus enjoyed being in the forge, and by the time he was 10, he had become a competent smith, and was starting to learn the jeweler’s craft from the voice in his dreams.

Unbeknownst to him, the Cult of Heroes had noticed him as a child, and they were convinced he was a reborn Hero; namely Wayland Smith, the mentor of Verditius. They realized he had the Gift, so Antonio ex Verditius, one of the few non-Mercere members of the cult, was chosen to take Augustinus to the Verdi covenant as apprentice. Antonio has the strange practice of waiting to take his apprentices after they have learned a Craft, and this almost backfired in the case of Augustinus, as the young man had become so strange and off-putting that Antonio actually had to rescue him from an angry mob and take him to Verdi.

Augustinus has never completely accepted the idea that he is an ancient legend reborn. The constant annoying persistence of his parens and various visitors from the Cult to do great deeds didn’t convince him of his heroic lineage, but it did stoke his ambitions; he wants to make a great name for himself as a warrior and an artificer-smith, but he’d like to do it for his own merit, rather than that of some ancient dead hero.

After his gauntlet, he continued to share space with his Parens at Verdi, waiting to find a spot in a covenant somewhere, but that arrangement started to wear on both their nerves, and he couldn't complete his initiation to his Parens' confraternity (the confraternity of Roland) without his own lab. Finally, through a friend of a friend in the Cult of Heroes, he heard that a Tremere was looking for young magi to explore a vast regio and found a new covenant in it. He immediately realized this was an opportunity to prove himself to the Cult, and to find a secluded space of his own. He set off for the Transylvania tribunal immediately.

Thanks everyone for expressing interest. I'm going out of town tomorrow and I'll be on my phone only until the 26th.

@Callen I have talked to you, I think I have seen Valeria's full sheet before? Was she posted on another game?

@Diedne I sent you a PM. I don't think we had any major issues. Where did I pull you from? Have we talked before?

@Larates No rush. Talk to me on the discord. I can respond pretty easily while I am gone on there. That server is too big to unmute, so tag me to make sure I see things.

@Gwtyhion You really took the Saga pitch and tailored your idea to it. That is fine. Some insight into me, I write IC descriptions as an unreliable narrator so not everything in the description of the saga set up is 100% accurate, obviously for there to be plots there have to untold complications. So don't be surprised if your magus slips from a situation he finds perfectly comfortable in to something he needs to adapt his style to.

@All I don't generally like Puissant and Affinity with the same thing. It's a fairly boring way of choosing virtues. There has to be something more interesting you can do with that design space. This isn't a rule, just my preference.

My note to Larates applies to everyone. For quick questions just tag me on the RPGX or Ars Magica Discord. Or PM me I guess. I may or may not be allowed to link those. I think since they are community areas and not something for this game specifically it would be OK. But getting infractions would be irritating.

I didn't actually intend to make him tailored to the pitch, just give him a reason to want to go, is that bad? (I've actually just been wanting to play a Tremere.) Also, I've been having second thoughts on his virtue choices anyway, so I will make some changes there. Basic concept will be the same.

I can't fault someone for trying to make their character make sense in the context of a Saga.

But to be clear as a newly gauntleted Tremere there would have been a lot less asking and a lot more telling in your recruitment letter.

Of course. FYI I was planning on making him 5 years post-Gauntlet, but I assumed that's still not Experienced... he's hoping if this goes well it might get him there.

Yes, after this Fierro would probably speak on your behalf to move you up to the Skilled Magus tier. Assuming you don't royally screw up. We can work on specifics later but it stands to reason any Tremere that go on the expedition were hand picked rather than picked at random.

Anyone other house, who knows why you came? Presumably you had other options. As it stands everyone who has a concept fits very well into my initial designs. Assuming the Flambeau is just here to raise skeletons and chew bubble gum (and he hasn't invented bubble gum).
