In an age long past, the great wyrm Ashardalon razed the countryside. His brutal and fearsome actions literally carved the land into what it is today. However, this terrifying demi-god was somehow banished from the realm, and peace has reigned ever since. Until now...

In the small town of Oakhurst, trouble is brewing. The Hucrele matriarch is desperate to find word of her two missing children. Cattle from nearby farms have been savagely attacked by beasties in the night. Curiously, goblins have come to town again this year, selling nothing but a single, magical apple.

What could these events possibly have in common? Perhaps a group of daring adventurers could find the answers by delving into the Sunless Citadel.

Name: Clausell L. Knott
Race: Human
Class: Fighter
Background: Soldier (Retired Officer)

Favorite Pastimes: Playing Chess, Drinking Wines and Reading Books on History & War
Favored Weapon: The Crossbow
Most Hated Insult: To be referred to as Old or Lame

Backstory: Once a soldier tied to a nearby township to Oakhurst, Clausell was renowned during his time in service as an excellent tactician and a kind and honorable man. For this (and some well placed and planned shmoozing of the local lords) he was granted an officer's rank and the charge of defending the western gates, as well as the authority to lead those guards into battle when one presented itself.

During an attack on the town some years into this service Clausell was grievously wounded and, even after being healed, he was found too weak to remain at his post. The man needed a cane to simply walk around. Accepting the end of his career well enough, the limping warrior left that town behind for a simpler life of playing games and of pleasant studies and training the village's local guards and men in marksmanship and swordplay.

Clausell has lived in Oakhurst for a bit over five years. Recently his people have found themselves troubled with a great many disturbances; missing children, cur-slaughtered cattle and more. Enough to make the retired warrior wary enough to polish up his old mail and arms. Feeling a bit more spry, though not as great as he'd been in his prime, those old yearnings have welled up again. If just once more, Clausell wishes to fight and to lead.

Last edited by Vathe; 03-06-2019 at 05:56 AM. Reason: Changed some small things to better fit the setting. Title is left vague for now, as well as what township he protected.

Gonna need a healer.

Name: Noddy Foxbramble
Race: Gnome (Forest gnome)
Class: Cleric of Rao
Background: Sage (scholar — librarian)
Backstory:

Noddy Foxbramble (his actual given name is Gillibrand, but nobody has ever called him that) grew up in a small gnomish community in Pellak. Most of them are scholars in the local Raoist church, a congregation which also includes humans and a scattering of dwarves. His parents are both chuch librarians, and Noddy is as much at home in the library’s winding bookshelf corridors as in the family burrow. He is never to be found without a book in his hand, on almost any subject, and when he is absorbed in his reading he is utterly oblivious to his surroundings or nearby conversation. He was nicknamed Noddy for his habit of falling asleep over his books while reading late at night.

Noddy has never questioned his Raoan beliefs. Rather, his devotion to the ideals of peace, reason, and scholarship has deepened as he has grown to young adulthood. He has had a sound introduction to other faiths, however, and is quite comfortable among adherents of other non-evil faiths. His parents were delighted when he felt called to the clerical vocation.

His personality is typically gnomish, with a cheerfully self-deprecating sense of humor and a delight in wordplay. He’s not above playing harmless jokes on others. Like most gnomes, he casts minor illusions, like greeting a friend with disappearing confetti, without even thinking of it as “real” magic. He has always had a pet mouse (the current one is named Pip), and his mother called him Mousepaw as a child.

His current journey away from Pellak is his first time away from home. He’s filled with a mixture of excitement at seeing the wider world, and trepidation about whether he can handle its perils. He has never faced personal danger and secretly fears that he might prove to be a coward when it comes. His task is to collect new books for the library, and document the histories of some of the smaller, rural communities. He’s been in Oakhurst for about a month, reading town hall records and interviewing residents, while paying his way as a scribe, writing documents such as wills and marriage certificates in his neat, graceful handwriting. He’s also a decent sketcher and will add illuminations to the document margins for an additional fee. His pay just covers room and meals at the inn.

Oooh an adventure path! Application below!

Application
right-aligned image

Name: Reginald Geoffrey Delafontaine Fox Darlington-Whit
Race: Human (Variant)
Class: Warlock
Background: Noble

Appearance: Reginald has meticulously groomed hair, beard and mustache, and is almost never seen with an out-of-place hair. Everything he does and says gives off a strong hint of wealth and care-free upbringing. He always carries several scented handkerchiefs, which he uses to inconspicuously dab his nose whenever he interacts with someone he deems beneath his station.

Personality: Unlike the majority of nobles in this land, Reginald has no hint of malice or grandeur in his behavior - even though his unequivocal ignorance might sometimes make it look like that would be the case. He has as much street-wise skills as a desert has dolphins.

Backstory: The Darlington-Whits made their fortunes by practicing the second (well, perhaps third, if you count Village Idiot) oldest profession: getting rid of other people's refuse. One might think emptying outhouses and carting off garbage is a shameful business, but the Darlington-Whits quickly learned to ignore shame - then completely hide it, behind luxurious mansions and expensive banquets. You'd be surprised how much ordinary people are willing to pay to have smelly stuff taken away from their houses! Wherever there was a settlement, a Darlington-Whit was sure to move in, usually among the first to settle and set up the collection infrastructure, at the expense of the city hall, of course! And thus, their fortunes grew exponentially over generations. Today, no one in the family is directly involved in the... ehem... dirty work, instead employing others to do it for them. They even have teams of goblins sifting through the daily intake - people do throw away the strangest, and sometimes, the most resealable things! And the goblins, of course, are happy to keep any scraps of food as payment.

Reginald, the latest offspring of the Darlington-Whit family in Oakhurst, was the personification of a pampered upbringing. There was nothing he could not buy. As such, to no one's surprise (except, perhaps, of the Old Ones themselves), he became the only known person in the region's history to buy himself magical powers - and why? Because gods also get bored and need a bit of a giggle from time to time, so they've industriously ignored the saying 'good things come to those who wait' and granted Reginald occult powers in exchange for a considerable amount of gold (nobody knows what an Old One does with it. Some think hip replacement). He was also the only warlock known to be able to nonchalantly cast an Eldritch Blast with his pinky finger held out.

And then he turned 19, the wonderful age when teens need to explore the world, against every single shout of alarm from their internal self preservation mechanism. Armed only with his complete ignorance of what life is like outside his villa (build on the grounds of his parents mansion), Reginald set out to explore this magical thing he only heard about: the countryside. Idealistic to the bone, he decided to challenge himself and see if he could survive on his own (even though his idea of survival includes 3 warm meals per day, 4 courses each, a warm bed with a feather mattress no thinner than a foot, and someone to dab his mouth with a silk cloth after each sip of wine).

DM Marten, are you open to a homebrew god of knowledge and libraries? I can adapt my character concept to an existing Greyhawk god, but I’d prefer one of my own. No change to rules (I’m new to 5th Edition, have only played Pathfinder and 3.5 up to now). Working on character, but backstory will depend on deity.

Between the Greyhawk gods in PHB and the Gnome gods in MToF there are 10 gods of knowledge so I see no need to add more.

Ok, no access to MToF right now. Using Wikipedia, Dugmaren Brightmantle would work very well. None of the Greyhawk gods in the PHB quite hit What I’m after, but Gilean of Dragonlance or Oghma of Forgotten Realms or Aureon of Eberron would work. If it’s gotta be one from the Greyhawk listing PHB, I guess Rao is closest.

Name: Violetta Sturmvoraus
Race: Half-Elf
Class: Rogue
Background: Noble

Appearance: Violetta is a very athletic young woman with a toned, curvaceous physique. She's actually quite attractive, but it's kinda hard to tell because, most of the time, she wears stealth-oriented clothing that covers her from head to toe, hiding from sight all of her features with the exception of her eyes. In fact, it is her lifelong dream to one day wear a frilly, feminine dress like the ones owned by her luckier cousins.

Personality: Silent, fast, efficient and scarily effective in her job, Violetta is the perfect operative, dispatching the enemies of her family and acquiring information for her constantly scheming relatives. However, this "extraordinarily efficient agent" persona of hers is just a facade: deep down, Violetta is a shy, insecure girl, who focus so much on being good at lurking in the shadows simply because she's scared of the impression she could make on others, were she to take center stage. She's actually caught in a conundrum, in that she wishes she could be free to engage in more feminine activities, but she's also insecure about her own femininity: this steps from how different her upbringing was, compared to the other females of the family.
She's exasperated by the constant schemes of her family, and won't pass up a chance to make snarky, sarcastic remarks about the orders she gets because of those: she will nonetheless never fail to carry out said orders to the best of her abilities. When around males she tends to act like "one of the boys", at least until she doesn't start developing a crush over one of her male companions (it happens quite often, since she desperately wishes she could have a romance like the ones described in the books her cousins used to read), at which point she'll get rather clumsy and awkward.

Backstory: Traditionally, when a major noble has multiple sons, the first born is the one who inherits the title and the fortune, while the others go on to become knights, or bishops, or stuff like that. Patrick Sturmvoraus, younger brother of the powerful Marquis Philippe Sturmvoraus, had decided in his youth to become an adventurer, joining a party to go dungeoneering an exploring all around the world... And his chosen class was bard, so it should come to no surprise that, when he returned, he brought with him a half-elf daughter. At the time, Violetta was still an infant, so she remembers virtually nothing of the sylvan kingdom of the elves, or of her mother: she grew up in the ancestral palace of the Sturmvoraus, alongside her various cousins (the Marquis had two children and, other than Patrick, also had another brother by the name of Andronicus, with two children of his own), but unlike them, she couldn't be officially recognized as a member of the family due to her half-blood, illegitimate status. She still got the surname, the luxurious upbringing, and the love of her family (who saw her father as an irresponsible fool, but never actively discriminated against her because of it), but due to the way nobility worked in her area, she could not legally inherit: this caused her relatives to decide against giving her the same refined, high-class education her cousins got, simply because making her into a fine noblewoman would have been a waste, as she could not BE a noblewoman to begin with. Instead, she was inserted in the pet project of her uncle Andronicus: a project whose goal was to create an elite group of agents specialized in B&E, assassination and espionage. From a very young age, these prospective agents would be trained so as to provide them with all the skills and abilities they would require, in order to acquire critical info for the family's schemes, deliver their most secret messages and, if necessary, eliminate their enemies: having been inserted in this project, this was the childhood Violetta got, as well.

And thus, she could only watch her cousins read fancy books, wear fancy dresses and entertain dreams that involved opulent feasts and memorable balls, while she practiced misdirection, stealth, and assassination techniques. She came to envy them and even resent them to an extent, but since they were always so kind towards her, she kept all those feelings to herself: in many ways her family was evil, as their constant schemes for increasing their powers saw them commit the worst atrocities without so much as batting an eye... But from Violetta's point of view, they weren't a BAD family: they were supportive towards one another, bonded over shared goals, helped each other with their latest conspiracies, an were always kind with her. For all intents and purposes, it was a functional happy family. A bloodthirsty, power-hungry, ruthless, functional happy family.

And of course, it is at the behest of her family that Violetta is going to join the party: her cousin Tarvek, heir to the title of Marquis, is a hardcore nerd when it comes to ancient history, the exploration of ancient ruins being a major fixation for him because of both historical curiosity, and the simple fact that acquiring ancient artifacts of unspeakable power is a very effective way of expanding the family's power and fortune. Thus, he has given Violetta the mission to keep an eye out for any adventuring party that might be interested in exploring the mysterious Sunless Citadel: he doesn't care one bit about disappeared children or slaughtered cattle, but if all these events are going to result in a party being formed to go explore the Citadel, then he wants his most trusted agent to be there, to keep him informed about anything relevant that is discovered. How open Violetta will be with the rest of the party about this interest her cousin has in the Citadel will depend on whether or not she sees a conflict between the party's goals and her own.

Sheet coming soon, everything else should be done
EDIT: here's the sheet https://www.rpgcrossing.com/profiler/view.php?id=79622

All gnomes see Nebelun as the delightful spirit of invention and discovery, even those whose livelihoods have nothing to do with the construction of odd devices.

There is also Rill Cleverthrush. There are some similarities between the interests of Rill Cleverthrush and Nebelun. Rill is more concerned with objects of art, gems, and magic items while followers of Nebelun seek out new inventions utilizing such things as clockwork, airships, and science.

Nebulan's Province is Invention, Luck while Rill Cleverthrush is Law, Thought. Both provide the Knowledge Domain.

Finally, there is a third gnomish god, Callarduran Smoothhands, which provides the Knowledge Domain but his worshippers are Deep Gnomes.

Name: Abigail Leafbride
Race: Half-elf
Class: Bard
Background: Folk-hero

Personality: Abigail is a bubbly, energetic young woman. She enjoys hearing and telling stories, and fancies herself something of a storyteller herself. She's usually the type to try and find ways around actual violence, with no real interest in hurting anyone if she doesn't have to. While Abigail may find herself offering up small prayers to the gods from time to time, and she may be fairly knowledgeable when it comes to old religious stories, she isn't actually particularly religious herself. She certainly believes that the divine exists -- she's seen enough evidence of it -- but she's not convinced that any gods out there really care that much for mortals, and doesn't specifically revere any of them personally.

Backstory: Abigail is not an experienced adventurer. Until recently, she didn't have any interest at all in becoming one either. Abigail was raised by her father, never knowing her mother, with three younger half-siblings to care for as she grew up. She was just a simple village girl, helping on the family farm, taking care of village children in her spare time, and occasionally going exploring in the local woodlands and collecting flowers for fun.

That all changed when a crazy old man wandered into town one day, and somehow managed to convince the village elders that she was some sort of 'Chosen one' spinning a tale about how she was supposed to defeat the evil emperor -- and the village saw fit to promptly hand her a dull sword, ratty armor and a pot-cover shield, and send her on her way to find her destiny. It all happened too fast for her to really have any idea what was going on, and after two days of camping outside the village and not being allowed back in, she finally set off on the road, hoping that she'd be able to find some way to make her meager funds and terrible equipment work for her.

Obviously she doesn't believe any of the nonsense that the old man claimed to know about her, so she has no intention of going after any evil emperors or any evil at all. She's mostly just looking for a way to make enough money to settle down again -- unless she really takes to a life of adventure that is. Who knows... maybe she will end up fighting evil after all.

Sorry about that, still new to this website's systems. I should have fixed it now, try again: that aside, is everything else about my character in order?
