Dawn of Darkness

Dawn of Darkness

Game Structure and Flavour
Pathfinder

This is not a published AP, this is brought to you by the creative nightmare of a mind that is Kapera. This is a game of survival, adventure and mystery, from the outskirts of society, to the ruins of worlds past and the throngs civilization and the conurbation which marks the Royal kingdom. There will be moments of intrigue, paranoia... okay not moments of that, that could happen consistently, just ask my other players, drama, confusion, sorrow, regret and then yes, triumph.

The Backdrop
Rivair Hibbair is a small, mostly forgotten town nestled along side the Rivair Hibbair River. Now one might point out the auditory circularity of the name, but then the one to do such a thing probably hailed from such a place where there are more than tens and tens of people and has probably even been provided with an education outside of the actual practical sort one receives when in a trade. Rivair Hibbair is the town and Rivair Hibbair River is the river, that fact was not for debate. Now as for a map, Rivair Hibbair is not on one, indeed it is also likely that anyone within the town has neither seen nor used a map, as when one has all they need, why would they ever leave. More to the point, no one leaves Rivair Hibbair, because... well no one does, it is just tradition, along with many other traditions found around the world.

Rivair Hibbair is a traditional sort of place as well. The Wise Man, or Woman, depending just on who is the oldest in town, keeps all the oral traditions and ensures that everyone else keeps them. Currently it is Maudie Briggs, a cantankerous and yet delightful stooped, old woman who keeps the knowledge as well as presides over the rare times there are conflicts in the village.

This is a small village, there is a blacksmith for tools, a very small inn, mostly for group meals and socializing, though occasionally there is a traveler who passes through and tells the most unrealistic stories of the outside world, but then again everyone loves a good fiction. The inn also serves as their source of medical aid, as the owner is both deft at cooking, brewing ale, stitching a wound and tending to a fever. Otherwise most people are self sufficient and trade for what they need. Farms for grain, linen and sheep, as well as a few dairy cows and goats all provide most of what they need. The river also provides its bounty when the fish are running, a time that draws the whole village to the river banks, to both catch, prepare and then dry the fish for all.

There is one main tradition within the village, that of the founding four families and their second born. The firstborn children are expected to have at least two children, and the second born of these on reaching their eighteenth birthday and adult hood, is presented with a necklace. The pendant is a small blue stone set in burnished silver, and is worn by the second born, until their first born sibling has children. Then, when the sibling's second born reaches the age of eighteen, their aunt or uncle, presents them with the necklace, and so the tradition has continued. While it is both a mouthful to explain and a headache to sort out, this has been passed on for generations even though the memory as to the origin has long been forgotten.

Along with the lost knowledge of the village's origins and the exact reason for being in Rivair Hibbair, is the fact that all the iron within the town is sourced from a single location, gleaned from the ruins which lay on the other side of the river, in a mirrored position to Rivair Hibbair. Like the original families, the traditional necklace and many other things, these ruins just always have been there, much like the river, the trees and the world.

Magic is the last area to consider. Much like ruins, rituals and anything else, there is magic here, though not that they would call it such. Sally can light a fire with her fingers, her great grandma could too, and Neil has a way with healing just about any injury just like his great uncle, and, well you get the point. There are skills and abilities which have presented themselves in this little place, but as no one ever leaves, no one has ever had chance or need to develop any occult like skill beyond the basics that just made aspects of life easier. If one was to point out to the Rivair Hibbairites that what various members of their village had done over the years was magic, they would be scoffed at, as magic was a thing of legends and fantasy, such as flying and walking on water, not lighting a fire nor unusual good luck.

Application Scene
The sun had begun to rise once more in the sky, rays of scarlet and dusts of salmon and violet danced across the eastern mountain range and lit the world in a rainbow of brilliant if not threatening colours. Red skies in morning... and yet it was the first day of the Char run and that meant that all hands were to be at the river's edge before the sun finished the banishment of night. Old Maudie Briggs was already there, firmly ensconced in her wicker chair to supervise while Trayner and Nona had already spread out fresh baked breads for breakfast. A soft murmur of the little ones as they waited along the rocks further down stream and then a shout. "They're coming!"

In many places and times, such a call from lookouts boded ill, but here in Rivair Hibbair, it was the sound of delight as the first edge of frothed waters indicated that the run beckoned. Soon everyone would be wet, scale marked and filthy, but as the catch was made, sorted, gutted and laid out on the drying racks, there was laughter and joy to be found in the annual tradition. Everyone worked, there were enough jobs to go around and in the evening there would be a great feast to celebrate the harvest which would provide meat for the winter months ahead.

Q&A and Reminders

Because this has come up several times: Yes, I have a reason for this to be a backwater with simple characters. No, you don't need to know it to make the characters. Yes, you will enjoy it, I promise.

When choosing a race, remember there have been no outsiders for at least 4 generations. Half-breeds are suitable so long as both halves would live together there as non-halves... and that statement is about to get convoluted, but I think you get what I mean

There is no town guard or militia, should there be a threat from a wild animal, all able bodied men and women will deal with it. There has never been an attack from bandits that any are aware of.

Religion has not been marked, I am open to creativity here.

Law is handled by the Eldest plus the 4 other oldest in the village to make judgement.

NO SHEETS needed at this point, but please list your intended Traits and Drawbacks

Once your application is complete, come up with a few ideas on how your character would interact with other completed characters and make a post see how people feel, this will be built on after final selection.

I'm going to be applying as an NPC, already spoke to Kappy about this. Basically, I'm going to be someone's Samwise Gamgee. Friend, pack-mule, moral support.

Blue Made an NPC
right-aligned image

Name: Thomas Miller
Age: 21
Race: Human
Class: Expert(for the skill points)
Traits: Whenever you successfully perform an aid another action, you grant your ally a +4 bonus instead of the normal +2.Helpful, You gain a +2 trait bonus on Swim checks in rivers or streams, and a +2 trait bonus on Survival checks to forage for food in or near a river or stream.River Acumen, You gain a +1 trait bonus on skill checks to use the aid another action.Supportive
Drawback: Oblivious
Fear: Disappointing the people he loves.
Flaw: Passive, prone to whittling away time doing nothing.
Alignment: NG

Appearance: WHY DO YOU HATE ME KAPPY??? :sob:

Okay, I can do this. Appearance. Thomas has eyes, and a face... and other body parts. The appearance of which match the picture in this post. Much describe.

Personality: Thomas is a kind soul who enjoys helping out wherever he can in Rivair Hibbair. While strong and a hard worker, Thomas isn't very proactive and is prone to daydreaming if not given something to do. As such, outside of the busiest times at the mill, he is usually seen around the village running errands or helping out wherever he is pointed.

When he's not working, one of his favorite spots to be is hanging out with Lillian at the inn. For as long as he could remember, he and Lillian had been best friends. When she lost her ability to hear, he stood by her side. When she tried to pull away, he went out of his way to make her smile. Even though it was difficult for him, he learned to sign well-enough for her.

RP Example: It was that time of the year, and Thomas knew he needed to help with the nets like he always did, but he had something more important to do first. Across the river and scattered along the hill where the ruins sat, the flowering blue flax could be found. He couldn't use the ferry since everyone was busy with preparing for the char run, and he wanted it to be a surprise anyway.

Making his way to the river, Thomas dove right in and began swimming across. He was a strong swimmer who could easily handle the water any time of the year, other than during the winter melt. A short time later he was dragging himself onto the other bank and striding quickly toward his goal.

Fifteen minutes later, having found the perfect specimen, Thomas returned to the river. Swimming back across was more difficult due to keeping one hand above the water, to protect the flower, but the waters were calmest in the fall. By the time he dragged himself back out of the river, he was tired, soaked, and covered in mud. That didn't stop him from smiling though. After stopping by the house for a change of clothes, he went to the regular gathering spot and looked for his target. A flash of blonde hair and a familiar voice drew his attention, and grinning widely, Thomas approached Lillian, who was currently carrying her nephew.

[Hello Lily,] he signed. Bringing his arm out from behind his back, he showed her the blue flax before tucking it carefully into her hair. [Beautiful flower. Beautiful heart.] His smile seemed to light up his face, such a contrast to his expressions when he was daydreaming or focusing on a task. Thomas turned and pointed to the river. [I go work,] he signed and trotted off to join the other men in setting up nets.

Thinks She is Much Funnier Than She Actually Is
Maketahk Barra

right-aligned image
Titles: The Mischievous, The Best Barra Daughter And Probably Favorite Child

Race: Halfling
Class: FeyspeakerDruid
Nature Bond: Serpent Domain
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Deity: The Lantern King
Age: 23

Favorite Item: Her marionette strings
Favorite Hobbies: Telling jokes, playing pranks, and staying still
Least Favorite Food: Elf
Least Favorite Sensation: Does not enjoy being manipulater

Character Concept: The better jester!
Intended role: Party Face, Battlefield Controller

Traits: Convincing Liar, Slippery, Wild Shadow OR Successful Shirker
Drawback: Occult Bargain

Physical description: Maketahk is disconcerting to say the least. She has been 'blessed' with an eternally youthful appearance which is a bit too youthful, making her look like a rather small child. Worse, her roughly textured hair and opaque eyes give her a distinctly doll-like appearance as she moves about, a resemblance that becomes exact when she purposefully remains still and unblinking. She purposefully exaggerates this by wearing clothes very reminiscent of what one would expect a child's doll to wear, such as plain dresses and earth-colored vests. It doesn't help that she carries a stuffed doll modeled after herself.

Personality: While her looks may be innocent, if creepy, her mind is one honed sharp from utilizing what she has been given. She knows how to leverage her uncanny looks to unnerve when she wants, to fool when she needs, and to get her way by the end of the day. Thankfully, her way typically is her looking for an entertaining story or a funny new joke that she can then kick up the chain during her morning prayers. Her sole drive seems to be ferreting out amusements and novel experiences, making her mostly harmless, and she's more than willing to help out. She calls this doll Mocketahk.

Biography: Most devout followers of deities are indoctrinated into the faith early, as children. For Maketahk, this did not happen, and her years growing up were pleasant and uneventful after that early section where her parents freaked out over their daughter's slightly abnormal appearance, one that stuck with her as she grew up - largely due to how utterly not-freaky-looking her older brother is. However, in her mid-teens, she sat down with the town's resident holy man and had a long, lengthy conversation about the gods of the realm, a visit that was sparked by her growing abilities with plants and animals, something that she had been keeping secret. There, she had him lay out as many deities as he could think of, which were a lot, before she fell in love with The Lantern King. A god who loves laughter and jokes and pranks matched her own personality and likes perfectly, and Maketahk latched onto him with all her might, developing her own worship of The Lantern King. After all, there was no god better suited to her!

Not only did this help direct and focus some of that youthful energy that Maketahk had just a bit too much of, it further honed her talents. As it was, she was already good at dealing with her family's milk cows, great big beasts that were equal parts dumb and sweet, but with the Lantern King by her side, she could practically talk to the cattle, get them to settle in the worst of storms and help diagnose them when they fell ill. And it wasn't just the cows, too. All manner of animals began taking to her that much more easily, whether it was the birds of the trees, the mice in the attic, or the adorable little snakes in the garden.

Her talent for working with animals cuts both ways though - she sympathizes with them, perhaps a bit more than someone in a small farming village should, so she has had recent troubles performing some of the more... practical parts of farming. Thankfully, her brother has been there to take care of that part of the business, and that kind of looking out for her has Maketahk with a sweet spot for Aiden, despite him being the 'normal' sibling she always gets compared to.

Flaw and Fear: For all her mirth and laughter, Maketahk's humor sometimes has a very harsh edge to it that is anything but fun - in particular, her jokes and pranks going too far is something she is semi-consistently scolded for. This unfortunately meets with her greatest fear, which is that she will some day accidentally harm someone that she cares for. Many of her reoccurring nightmares has her at the scene of something tragic that she inadvertently had a hand in.

Character Application
left-aligned image
right-aligned image
James "Jimmy" Stones
Well half-elf but with round-ears trait so elven blood is pretty thin at this pointHuman, Male, Neutral Good, 18 years old
Fortunes' favored faith traitLucky Family has some goats and other livestock, also has the Rancher regional traitrancher and Town renowned just doesn't have the same ring to itworld renowned Bard, Duettist archetype, Savant social traitfiddler.
Character Sheet

Appearance: What do they look like, a picture is not a must, but a written clear description is

Flaw: If there is one flaw that stands out about Jimmy, its putting others above and beyond himself, and especially Familes Ties drawbackhis family. If his family needs something Jimmy is the first one to volunteer, even if it is not something he should really be doing or somebody else would be better for it, even when others take up the task he is keen to help, sometimes getting in the way or making things more difficult than it needs to be just so he can feel like he is helping out. Some would argue there are worse flaws one can have, and family should be important, but it can put a strain on Jimmy when he isn't able to get it done or its just not something that falls within his morals.

Fear: Everybody has fears, what rational person doesn't, but some are worse than others obviously. Jimmy has some strong dislikes that include things like boredom, things with more than 8 legs (ugh centipedes) and leeches (come on they suck blood), but these are things he can push through on if need be but as for true fears that will haunt his dreams, well he has those too. For the most part they follow a common theme of being trapped, buried alive and suffocating, typically in a small place like a closet, coffin, barrel, etc. A room wouldn't be as bad as there is some room to move about, or a large cave, but even then eventually it would wear at him and would cause him to panic.

Biography: Who are you? Your personality, what your job is in the town, what you think about your little village

Role Play Example: Your character is on that river bank working. Which job is theirs in the process, what are they doing? Write this as if it was a post in the game, I just wish to see your post-writing style. I am not expecting a book, just a real response.

Jimmy's take on the others who are completed

Go for the helpful Halfling build. A helpful Halfling investigator is perhaps the most busted support character ever. And a blast to play.

He's just going to be a commoner, but helpful would still be a good way to take him.

Hi Kapera, just wanted to run my race by you before I got too far in on my application. I'm hoping to have half-orc for my race with Human Raised and Burning Assurance alternate racial traits to represent the peaceful life she's lived. I know the desert part of the Burning Assurance fluff doesn't really fit but the extra confidence coming from a half-orc founding family does, and I couldn't find a better thematic substitute for Intimidating.

@Bookworm
I just have to ask how does a family maintain being half orc for generations upon generations? There have been no outsiders in at least three or more generations as well and a lack of threats in the outside world that is closest to them. While some half-races would work, one of the founding families may be elven and with the breeding and such, there are half, or halfling, or such things, but there would not be a full-blood orc set of families in this setting.

Application Name: Argus MacFeio
Race: Human (Heart of the Wilderness racial trait)
Class: Fighter (Brawler archetype)
Age: 22

Appearance: Like most MacFeio men, Argus is exceptionally large for a human, tall as a doorway and just as wide. Years of working on his family's farm has bulked up that large frame with an impressive display of thick muscle and a deep tan complexion marked with a dozen or so minor scars from just growing up in the backwoods. His brown hair is usually kept short, shorn down to the skin by a straightrazor on the sides most times of the year, and never in the way of his kind blue eyes. To Argus's frustration, he has yet to show any sign of growing facial hair, keeping the rest of his face baby smooth.

Flaw:Argus is strong as an ox and fairly kindhearted, but he's also...kind of dense. If it doesn't involve physical labor, it just kind of passes right over his thick skull, to the aggravation of his elders as well as some of the younger female citizens of Rivair Hibbair who have been too subtle about their intentions.

Eirnan Wishwood

Eirnan Wishwood

Character Name: Eirnan Wishwood.
Age: 21
Race: Half Elf.
Alignment: Lawful Neutral.
Class: Sorcerer.
Bloodline: Pestilence Bloodline.
Traits:Traditionalist, Focused Mind
Drawback: Helpless

SHEET: https://www.rpgcrossing.com/profiler/view.php?id=79018

Appearance: Eirnan stands out, not because of his bright blue eyes or half elf heritage, but because of how sickly he appears. Ever since his youth he has always been getting sick, and it shows. His dark brown hair is medium length, and hangs limply off of his head. His body is lanky, his bones are prominent. While he appears as if he could shatter, he is actually more resilient than he looks. Speaking of looks, despite his sickly appearance (which is by no means deceiving,) he is actually very attractive. His characteristic frown makes him look older than he is, but his red nose and rosy cheeks contradict that. He has a small braid in his hair, that ends with an old elven ring.
He wears many layers of clothing, always claiming to be freezing cold. He typically wears layered light brown or green robes, they look like the typical garment for someone indisposed.

Flaw: Eirnan has always been taken care of. His meals cooked by his parents, his chores taken care of by his siblings. He is perfectly capable of doing many things, but will play up his sickness to get more leeway. It cannot be doubted that he is indeed sick, but he tends to over exaggerate when he feels it will get him pity. He is not used to doing things for himself, as he has always been given the easiest jobs out of pity.

Fear: Eirnan is deathly afraid of being truly alone. He is more social than he seems, and although he frowns and tells everyone to go away, he loves being around people. He would rather die than be imprisoned alone without any friends. He likes being alone, but with people within shouting distance, because he enjoys company a lot more than he lets on.
Another (lesser) fear that Eirnan has is Tetraphobia, the fear of the number four. While he won't freak out if someone says "4!" He thinks that bad things come in fours, and doesn't like the number. He does not want to sleep in the fourth room, and is happy to wait outside house number four, thank you very much.

Biography: Eirnan is the second born child of the Wishwood family. He has an older sister, and two younger brothers. He had an older brother, but when he was 6 and his brother was 8, the sickness briefly changed hosts and quickly killed his brother. Eirnan still feels guilty to this day, he blames his brother's death on himself. He rarely joined in playing with them however, due to the fact that he was often sick. Nobody really knows how it came about, but when he was very young he got sick and never fully recovered.
Eirnan comes across as antisocial and brooding, but he is actually kinder than he seems. He cares deeply about his family, and his village. His most prized possession is a small elven bead that he wears in his hair. It is made of silver, and each of his relatives has a slightly different story about it. His venerable elven great great grandfather insists that it is from the first world, claiming that one of the fae gave it to one of his ancestors. His aunt (who gifted him the family necklace,) tells him that it is just something that some elf made and their family happened to buy. His little brother, (who obviously knows nothing about it's origins,) starts crying whenever someone tries to prove that a magical gnome riding a dragon didn't magically burp it up after drinking too much of Aroden's blood, not to get into that imaginative little boy's theories about how Aroden died.
Eirnan tries to avoid helping out around town, but his family forces to help him with their bakery. Of course, nobody wants the sick guy near the food, so they find creative uses for him. He groans and complains, but he secretly loves his odd jobs. Weather he is helping in the wheat fields, by somehow drawing all of the bugs and vermin to him, or secretly helping his mom with the icing of the cakes, he has fun. Nobody would buy the cakes if they knew that he had iced them, but his sickness doesn't seem to be too contagious.
He is generally accepted among the villagers, but pitied. He never has had too many friends other than his siblings, not that he would want any (he very much wants friends.) His snide and sarcastic comments may anger some, but those who know him know that he rarely means what he says. In fact, many think that him calling a girl "ugly" means that he secretly likes her. He has never had any romantic relationships, if there are any women interested in him he wouldn't have noticed.
Eirnan rather likes his little village. He sometimes has thoughts about leaving, but why would he? He has a relatively good life, staying inside and reading when he isn't being forced to help out. He secretly wishes that he could prove that he is more than the sick boy, but he has no real way to. When all he does is complain, sulk, and cough, it is hard for many to see him as more.

This sounds like fun, I'll leave this as a placeholder for now. Kind of bouncing between ranger and investigator.
