"Oi! Ya aintn't dead... Not yet. You got a debt owed"

What appears to be a squat man dressed in ragged robes with a wide-brimmed hat covering his face so that only his beak-like nose protrudes is poking you with a stick. You're lying on your back looking up at... the sky? You feel a sense of vertigo as while you can feel the ground pressing against you back, the 'sky' above you looks like a cityscape - thousands of rooftops projecting from it like an upside-down city.

"What'sa matter? You never seen Sigil before?""

As you get to your feet, you realize you are standing on a cobbled street in a city of buildings much like those in the 'sky' above you. Every so often, the buildings are broken up by strange doors of all sorts of designs with writing in hundreds of languages written on them. Looking behind you, you see a similar door - with the name of your home written on it in your own native tongue.

Another sharp poke brings you to attention.

"'ey! Stop gawpin'! As I said - you got a debt you gotta pay - an' you gonna come with me to get started."

You remember - how could you not. When you made that promise: a lifetime of service in exchange for a favor.

"C'mon. We gotta get the others first. You can call me Johnson, berk. Step lively - I don't wanna have to come fish ya out of a crowd."

Something compels you to follow the hunched man with the stick as he walks off pushing through the streets crowded with a diversity of beings both known and unknown you have never seen before.


Introduction
You have 'woken up' in Sigil, City of Doors. The last memory you have before this was of dying, but you seem alive as best you can tell.

At some point in your past - you made a deal. You got something and in exchange, you promised "a lifetime of service". But nothing happened after you got your half - nothing came to claim you for the rest of your life.

Now, somehow, you know that "Johnson" is taking you to serve out your side of the deal.


Why Sigil
There's an in-game reason - but in terms of character creation, it is because it means players can come from any plane. This can be an inner plane (the feywild, shadowfell, an Elemental plane etc.) and outer plane (The Nine Hells, Limbo, Celestia etc.) or any of the Prime Material Planes (Faerun, Greyhawk, Eberron, Ravnica etc.)

So as far as options for creating your character, you can use anything from a published book. I am also allowing Unearthed Arcana (except for those that have been adapted for official use already) and you may also use the Matt Mercer's Bloodhunter or Gunslinger. You can also use the Circle of the Beyond for Druids

You start at level 1. Use 27 point buy for stats and default starting items as per your class/background.


The Game
Your character owes a "lifetime of service". Even though you might have lived long after you made your deal, you still start at level 1 - so feel free to play as if your character was once stronger. Your debt is only considered paid when you die.

You will always be given an option of several missions. These can take place on any plane of existence - as Sigil serves as your base. The missions are varied in their objectives and ideal methods - some may be straight dungeon crawls, others might involve negotiation, some might be about exploration. When a mission is finished, those of you still alive are returned to Sigil and the process repeats.

So don't expect too much of a connected story regarding the missions - most of your common ground will be that you all are serving out the same debt in the same place. However, there may be connecting threads and repeated foes - depending on the choices you make. And if you have a particularly juicy hook in your backstory, I'll be tempted to try use it.

Did you get what you wanted? Was it worth it? Did you get what you wanted or was your desire twisted in some way? Did you come to regret making this deal, or do you think it was worth it?
What was the aftermath? At the moment, you look as old as you did the day you made your deal. But, in reality, you continued to live for a time? Did you live a long life, or a short one? Did you change after you made the deal? How did you die?
Where did you expect to be now? When you died, what did you think would happen? Did you think you'd lived a life as a good person and expected to find peace in the Blessed Fields of Elysium? Did you live a warrior's life and expect the glory of fighting each day and feasting each night in the Heroic Domains of Gladsheim? Did you believe your soul was damned to an eternity of servitude in the Nine Hells or Torture in the Abyss? Did you have a completely different view of the afterlife - not a belief in the Great Wheel? Did you not believe anything would happen? Did you even think you could die?

After answering these, feel free to flesh out anything about your character you think we should know.

Yo. So what are the class/race limitations? whats the point buy? Any equipment stuff we need to know? What alignment should we be?

Added the 27 point buy part.

There's no restriction on race or class save it has to be either from a published book, Unearthed Arcana or the two Matt Mercer homebrews which are practically official.

Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron is also fine.

Equipment is whatever you get from your class/background and there are no alignment restrictions

Appearance Barely five feet tall and of slender build, he is covered in iridescent black feathers. He is dressed in what most would consider rags made of cloth as black as his plumage. Hanging off his large staff is a lantern which glows a muted green, its purpose is lost to his former life.

Basic Personality

Personality Trait: I often get lost in my own thoughts and contemplation, becoming oblivious to my surroundings.

Ideal: Solitude and contemplation are paths toward mystical or magical power.

Bond: I’m still seeking the enlightenment I pursued in my seclusion, and it still eludes me.

Flaw: I’d risk too much to uncover a lost bit of knowledge.

Advanced:Answer the following questions:
Winds Whisper knows little of what transpired after his deal was made. He knows he lived beyond for the strange glowing lantern was not something he possessed at the time but its significance is lost to this younger version of himself. He was a hermit from Estagund in southeastern Faerun in the forests outside of Tirumala, a city ruled by rakshasa nobles. Prior to the 'deal' he had been involved with kenku spies attempting to unravel a plot that suspected the rakshasa of Tirumala of infiltrating Vaelan and claiming the Shining Lands for themselves. Freeing his people from the rakshasa's slavery was always of paramount importance to Winds Whisper.

The area of the forest he dwelt was more marsh and swamp than woodland and his intimacy with nature became twisted and warped by the decay and rot of the bog. There were some of his own people who feared to go to that place but Winds Whisper felt a kinship with that putrid place.

Seeking to enhance his power, Winds Whisper sought out an entity that had festered within the bog for millennia, a shade of Lolth. His memories of what took place after his deal are lost to him as he has reverted back to his younger form but the strange glowing lantern surely holds clues to that forgotten time.

Lolth's plans for weakening the rakshasa of Tirumala involved Winds Whisper spreading a plague among the fiends' slaves, robbing them of their productivity and wealth. This plague cost the lives of many kenku as well as the other enslaved races. Winds Whisper is so ashamed of what took place by his hands that he has subconsciously blocked out the knowledge of his involvement in that horrible deed.

So, while he did get what he wanted, his people freed from slavery, his desire was twisted that his people were only freed to a horrible death.

Winds Whisper expected an after-life of torment and torture in the Abyss at the hands of Lolth. A price is younger self was willing to pay to see his people freed from their bondage.

@Arachobia Can you use the starting gold to buy something that is not in the starting equipment list? Like a sword for a Hexblade warlock?

Yes. I'd also allow you to swap out starting items for other items that cost the same amount of gold

Where are you from? Khelkori comes from Riedra in Eberron. He had given up a life of purpose and renown and taken to the open and barren stretches of the Tashana Tundra seeking isolation.
Why did you make this deal, and with whom did you think you made it? Khelkori was a lifelong warrior for the Kalashtar of Adar, fighting against the Quori of Riedra. He took the lead on a mission that required getting in contact with an informant. It ended with the informant's torture and death. Khelkori's inner spirit still drove him toward a life of battle, and he sought to silence it. He prayed for a new instinct, though he didn't know if anyone was listening.
Did you get what you wanted? A few mornings later, Khelkori was on the road. He was walking north, taking some of the poacher's trails and such he had used for infiltration in the past, but this time he had a different aim in mind. Or, his instinct did. He was walking toward a new life in the Tashana Tundra, only vaguely aware of the fact.
What was the aftermath? Khelkori grew old on the ice fields, learning to survive for himself. While every day was a struggle and it often came down to close calls, he felt at peace. It was as if fighting to survive and exist gave that very existence purpose.
Where did you expect to be now? Khelkori was a devout follower of the I can't find any reference for what this would mean in regards to the afterlife.Path of the Light.

What the hell, I got a character that was made for plane hopping.

Where are you from? Material Plane
Why did you make this deal, and with whom did you think you made it?: It was done to acquire a list. The names, aliases, and last known locations of the crew that used and abused him for those long decades. The entity disguised as a noble promised him this list in exchange for his services, claiming he saw 'great world-altering potential glittering in the bottomless red sea of his heart.'
Did you get what you wanted?: The price was paid in full and worth every last ounce.
What was the aftermath?: As soon as he accepted the list Yuroak felt his world go dark and crash into the plush carpet beneath his boots. He awoke at the behest of someone he didn't recognize, still carrying his gear and weapons with him. But he noted now, etched into his arms, were highly intricate tattoos. One of them was of a mighty tree that melted into a portrait of a blasted hellscape. His other arm showed the image of a lone tower looming over vast mountains that transitioned into the tall cresting waves of a stormy ocean.
Where did you expect to be now?: Yuroak isn't aware that he actually died. He believes he was simply knocked out and dragged to this strange city with cryptic new markings all along his arms. He has no visible scars or recent wounds healed over after that deal so he has no way of knowing his life was ended so he could be utilized in the deal that was made.

Appearance: Guisane cuts a dashing figure with his black curly locks reaching down to his shoulders, his charming smile crowned by a shadow of a moustache and a dark cloak hanging loose over one shoulder, covering most of his lithe frame. He wears good quality boots, a bit worn but obviously well cared for and over a white shirt he wears a leather vest set with brass buttons. Orange silk scarf is tied around his neck and a single loop of gold is hanging from his right ear.

Where are you from? Radigast City in the County of Urnst. That would be Flannaes for those interested, on Oerik.
Why did you make this deal, and with whom did you think you made it? I sold my soul for three pieces of silver, each which would help me get what I need at the time I would have need of them. I do not know who it was that offered them to me, but at the time I had no other choice. So I spoke the words to seal the deal and reached out into the shadows, plucking the coins from empty air.
Did you get what you wanted? I got it all and more. Much more. One coin was spent for love, one was spent for fortune and one was spent for revenge. You could say it was worth every silver.
What was the aftermath? I lived a life of adventure and excitement, fulfilling my every desire with but three coins of silver. I did not care about what came after, I had no gods to pray to. I was my own master in life and that is worth an afterlife of servitude. I died of old age, peacefully surrounded by loved ones and without enemies on my trail.
Where did you expect to be now? I honestly didn‘t think about what came after, I was a godless man so I had no misconception about enjoying any afterlife and I believe my bads where countered by my goods, should there be a cosmic force keeping score. If I had awoken in a sea of screaming fire then so be it, had it be a city of clouds full of peace and serenity then that would be as it is. This city, this Sigil.....now that actually came as a surprise. In any case, I got a debt to pay. So be it.
