"N-No! No, no, no, no!" She tried to stand but the rocking of the ship threw her back to the deck. She had told him! She had said this boat wasn't made for an ocean voyage.
I'm going to die. she thought, I'm going to die on this stupid boat in the middle of this damned ocean and there's nothing I can do it about. At least this torment will finally be over. She crawled back to the ladder than lead below decks and walked back to her cabin. Knowing she was going to die filled her with a sense of calm. She had never been afraid of dying. She knew there were worse things, had always known. She sat on the bead, and waited for the ship to sink. |

To her great surprise, the ship did not sink. Hours of tossing waves passed, with the ship nearly capsizing at several points, but, finally, the morning dawned with clear skies. However, as Valtyra poked her head up, she found that there was absolutely no land in sight in any direction.

"Ok. Now What?" Valtyra asked. "I have some knowledge of sailing small fishing boats, but I nothing of how to sail a boat this big." She crossed to the main wheel and looked at it. Would the boat even be controllable with out the main mast? And where was land? Valtyra sighed and took hold of the wheel. "I guess I don't have a whole lot of other choices. Maybe Pharasma isn't done tormenting me quite yet."

"Well, well, speak the devil's name and he shall appear."
The voice boomed around the ship just as Valtyra spoke the name of the goddess. "Of course, I'm not done with you, my pet. You got yourself into quite a predicament here, but don't worry, we'll get you out of this yet." The words would have seemed comforting if not for the slight sneer Valtyra could detect beneath the words. "You seem to have a pretty firm grasp on how to steer that thing. The land you seek is to the east." As the voice spoke, Vlatyra gasped. The entire ship lifted itself out of the water and turned in the air, setting itself gently down facing a different direction. "There. I have need for you in Waterdeep. Keep the sun in front of you and you'll be there by noon. We'll have your debt to me paid off in no time." The goddess laughed and then, although Valtyra wasn't sure how she knew, she was gone. |

Debt? Valtyra thought. Is that why she made me this way? Is that why she gave me these... powers? These things I can do, why give them to me? What am I being punished for?

The ship responded well to Valtyra, going where she steered it. She wondered briefly how it moved without a mast and sail to propel but put it out of her mind, chalking it up to more of the goddess' power. She began to become more and more aware, instead, of just how hungry she was, the little food she had eaten the day before...forfeited...during the storm the night before.

She considered going down below to look for food, but was unsure that the ship would continue to travel in the correct direction if she left it to run on its own. She decided she would ignore the hunger pangs as long as she could.

The hours wore on until finally Valtyra saw a black line appear on the horizon. The line grew until it took on the shape of a vast cityscape.

As Valtyra approached the dock, she realized she had no idea how to slow down the boat. She had only a few moments to act before she struck the dock.

"Help! I don't know how to stop!" She yelled, hoping someone on the dock would be able to help her, or at least evacuate everyone from the dock.

There were only two men on the dock, having a conversation, but they both turned to look at Valtyra's voice. One man leaped from the dock into the water, while the other one seemed frozen in place. Valtyra found that this was not the case, however, as the man gave a flourish of his hands and, with a flash of light, the water around the boat started to spontaneously flow away from the dock, slowing the boat down until it came to a stop, with a gentle bump, against the dock. The man lowered his arms and glared at Valtyra expectantly.

"Wow! I- that was amazing! Thank you! I've never sailed a boat before and the captain disappeared in the storm and I was lost but I made and where am I?" Valtyra came to a stop as she ran out of breath.

The man's eyes grew wider and wider as she spoke.
"This is Waterdeep. I...just...just pay the 1 gold docking fee, please." |
