I consider violence a last resort. Ideal: An orderly society is best, but rulers have as great a duty to their subjects as vice versa. Bond: I must help the helpless to make up for my past mistakes. Flaw: I'm excessively cautious, reluctant to act, and preoccupied with contingencies and what-ifs. Appearance: Zhong-Jie is a human woman in her twenties with black hair, brown eyes, and a lithe build. She is quick with a polite smile, but just as quick to fret when she thinks herself unobserved. She wears loose, flowing clothes, and rigorously maintains both the functionality and appearance of her equipment. Personality: Zhong-Jie is polite and formal with everyone, be they royal or wretched, worthy or wicked. She presents an air of good-natured, soft-spoken humility, and her speech and mannerisms are so controlled that it's difficult to gauge her emotions, motivations, or even opinions. When she thinks no one is looking, she often appears regretful or apprehensive, but avoids discussing her feelings even if confronted directly. Zhong-Jie tries to help those in need, but is overly cautious and slow to violence; in a crisis, she's prone to overanalysis and is reluctant, even unable, to make a decision. History: Zhong-Jie was born to a peasant family, the second of five children. At the time of her birth, her people suffered under colonizing invaders, but in her childhood, a cunning and powerful sorceress single-handedly captured the capital, removing the invaders and allowing the nation to reclaim its lands. The grateful people made the sorceress their queen and the nation flourished under her rule. As a teenager, Zhong-Jie left her family's farm for the capital, hoping to send money home to her family but also to be closer to the queen that she idolized. The artisans and bureaucrats of the city had little use for an illiterate farmer, but her physical fitness found her a place in the city guard and her dedication and quick study earned her a rank of authority and respect. Times were good for Zhong-Jie, but they wouldn't last. The queen, once the hero of the people, became their enemy. Her rule became increasingly strict and demanding, eclipsing even the invaders she'd replaced - for while they had wanted everything possible from the nation, the queen wanted the impossible: perfection. When the people resisted, she imposed harsh punishments, but this only caused further unrest. Finally, the nation rose up in violent rebellion, stormed the palace, and slew the royal family. In this way, Zhong-Jie saw the queen she admired fall from grace and everything she had worked for destroyed. And when she tried to walk away from the city she'd sworn to protect, the Mists swallowed her up.   RP Sample "We meet again, little rabbit." Zhong-Jie looks over. The speaker lounges against a horse-drawn wagon, one of many in the encampment, a smoking pipe held loosely in one hand. Their clothes are hardy enough for travel, but flamboyantly colourful and accented with jewellery. The cut is unlike that of her homeland - much more form-fitting and skin-revealing - but Zhong-Jie is very far from home. "Please forgive me," Zhong-Jie says, bowing her head and smiling politely, "but I think you are mistaken. We haven't met. Perhaps you have confused me with someone else?" The stranger chuckles and smiles, gazing at her with lidded eyes. A golden tooth glints in the evening light. "You forget me so easily, little rabbit? And I work so hard to make an impression. But I am but one jewel in the treasury, I suppose." They motion with their free hand towards the rest of the caravan. "Maybe we are all as one to you." "Again, I apologize." Zhong-Jie bows her head again, holding the position for emphasis, making eye contact with the stranger before she straightens up. "But I'm certain I would remember you and your group if we'd met, and I do not. Is it possible you've met another of my people? I'm far less memorable than you, and easy to mistake for another." The stranger's smile disappears, but their eyes stay on Zhong-Jie, now inspecting her carefully. They inhale deeply from the pipe and hold the breath for several seconds before slowly blowing a jet of smoke through pursed lips. Zhong-Jie stands in place, returning their look with the same polite smile, but her left hand adjusts its grip slightly on her sheathed sword. "Perhaps...it was not you." They lean their head against the side of the wagon and give a soft sigh, watching her through lidded eyes again. "Tell me then, have you eaten?" Zhong-Jie is so surprised by the question that, for a second, she lets it show on her face. That phrase is common in her homeland, especially in her rural village, but seemingly unknown in the land she walks now. After a moment, she puts on a shyly flattered expression. "So you have met my people before." "Yes." The stranger lifts the pipe to their lips for another drag. "I know more of your struggles than you'd think." What is it you would like to get out of the game? What kind of things appeal to you in a PbP game?: I've always seen D&D and roleplaying games as a vehicle for collaborative, character-based storytelling. Play-by-post in particular allows me to carefully consider my character's actions and really get into their head. Primarily, I want to explore the stories of my and other players' characters. What sort of things do you not want to see in a PbP game?: Railroading and prioritizing plot over character development and roleplay annoy me. In terms of horror content, I don't want to see explicit sexual assault or harm to children, but I have a pretty strong stomach for anything else. What is it that made you want to apply to this game?: I've always loved the creepy and macabre and am a longtime veteran of Ravenloft, Call of Cthulhu, and other horror games. I also enjoy that Ravenloft games tend to feature more anti-heroes and complex villains than D&D's usual heroic fantasy. When it comes to this game in particular, I'm excited to explore Har'Akir, which I think has incredible potential but rarely gets the attention it deserves. Do you prefer PbP games that are predominantly focused on combat, or predominantly focused on role-play? Or a mixture of the two?: I like a mixture of both, and Ravenloft isn't Ravenloft without danger, but I tend to lean towards roleplay. Of course, combat can itself be an opportunity for roleplay, especially in play-by-post.

Ok, one of my games has died which is a shame as I was enjoying it. So now I have some free time, which is now taken up with deciding whether to throw my hat in the ring. The draw is great, so I may sneak it in within the next day or two.

Ravenloft is a favorite demiplane of mine, and Har'akir particularly ever since Stone Prophet! I'm not hugely familiar with 5E though (Despite being in a game of it, hahah) but I am intrigued. I didn't see it mentioned but is there any restrictions regarding alignment or class? Super tempted to haul out an old... Old necromancer character that hasn't seen the light of day in a hot minute, but I do believe he would constitute as lawful evil.
