The group get their gear sorted out and then set forth into the wilderness. The harsh scrublands of the wilds here are unforgiving and with plenty of dangers lurking. The map the party have been given is highly detailed and easy to read, with a clear route marked to the foothills. A best guess would be that it will take four to six days of camel-back travel, or more than twice that on foot to get there.

OOC: Please each roll 5 checks for me (one per day initially). You can choose Survival, perception, Nature or stealth (in any combination - all one type, or a different one per day - your choice). If you decide to walk rather than ride please tell me.

The bard that broke the camel's back...

Amenthis handed over the magical rapier to his dwarf companion in exchange for the expertly crafted one he carried. To be sure, noble Unferth, we shall dance with our enemies the waltz of death, ha ha! As the final preparations were completed, the bard prepared a riding tune on his finger cymbals. It was designed to calm their beasts of burden and allow the group to concentrate on the tasks at hand. Matching the cadence of the their march across the barren landscape, the jangling rythm faded into the background as step after step was made. He began to wonder if this trek would ever end...if indeed it had yet begun.

Kai tries to ride Camels, but eventually prefers to walk faster

Kai "Kickass" Kayfabe, Human MonkAfter some hesitant, caareful attempts at mounting a Camel, Kai briefly managed to sit on one of the more placid animals without falling down, breaking his bones, or suffering any other sort of sudden misfortune he seemed to dread.

After a brief moment of silence, he very obviously began calming breathing exercises while doing his utmost to avoid annoying the large beast, which endured his antics with stoic patience. Soon, it became incredibly apparent that Kai had no idea what he was doing, and even as the group began to head towards their destination and the Camels moved without much prompting, Kai still managed to irritate or confuse his mount at times when he attempted to direct it.

The monk (and his camel, and his companions & their camels) suffered through this for an entire day, before Kai eventually shrugged and leapt from his poor animal, deciding to walk instead. Surprisingly, he wasn't merely capable of keeping pace with his mounted companions, but also able to move even faster, though he rarely left the group except when asked to scout ahead.

The group of adventurers set off immediately across the blasted and barren badlands towards the rising peak of Pale Mountain. The map is exceptionally clear, and the route well marked - but the group are able to find occasional spots of inefficiency nonetheless. They make excellent time, covering far more miles than the timetable predicted, with each day seeing a shortcut across a dry river bed, or a narrow trail through a set of hills that the map suggests skirting around. Their keen eyes also spot dangers before they can affect them - Kai noticing a flight of birds overhead on the first day which alerts Gabriel to a hidden Giant Spider nest, and on the second day Amenthis spies a dark shadow gliding over the ground which Gabriel immediately identifies as a dragon soaring many miles overhead. The half hour of shelter beneath an overhang certainly saves time, if not lives on the journey. Midway through day three the same shadow is seen miles to the east, darting in and out with three smaller ones which Kai guesses are griffons, possibly defending their nest against the giant wyrm's predations.

It is late on the third day by the time the travelers reach the old road marked on the map as the start of Pale Mountain's foothills, and they have traveled nearly eighty miles in that time. The looming presence of the mountain rises to the northeast, its slopes rugged and forbidding. The overgrown tracks of an old road wind through the foothills, but no visible trail leads up into the tangle of shrubs and brambles between here and the dormant volcano's slopes. Nonetheless that is where the map indicated that the group should go.

OOC: There's a couple of miles of thorny underbrush until the sandflats marked on the map, and no clear trail. It's all difficult terrain, and evening is fast approaching (perhaps 2 hours until dark). Give me actions (you're in exploration mode) and rolls to match please...
