Why hello there !

Hello everyone !

Back when I was a kid, I remember someone throwing the box of a weird looking video game called Baldur's Gate 2 on my lap, and oh boy what a mistake that was.
I was 10 years old and immediately proceeded to get murdered, turned to stone, disintegrated, poisoned by Otyughs and all that kind of fun stuff. And the worst part ? I loved it.
Frustrated by my inability to completely grasp the complexity of the game, I started to read up on the source material (AD&D2.5 I believe ?), trying to figure out why in the nine Hells was there nine Hells, or what does THAC0 even means ?

17 years later, all grown up, still addicted to DnD and RPGs, my love for video games opened the door for me to spend quite a few years around tables with some friends, pizza and beers.
Now that I moved to another country for work (Japan, yay) I find myself with an urge to play some DnD, but sadly not enough time to sit around a table for 4 to 6 hours every week-end... although with all the time spent in trains commuting to work, I have PLENTY of opportunities to check forums.

And here I am !

I have a fairly extensive experience of 5e and this is probably the kind of games I'll be looking for. (here's hoping there will be a few of those recruiting when I'll get to that part). I could potentially go for earlier versions of DnD aswell but I'm afraid that mixing so much rules from so many editions could get confusing for my nut-sized brain.

As usual for me, I'll try to find my place as either a cleric or a bard. I'm not much for big damage, explosions or stabby stabby, but if a song, a riff and a few pelvic thrusts can give my companions +10 to hit (or Advantage), you can count on me to do exactly that !

Welcome!

No one ever understood THAC0. We played it for years, but don't worry, we never understood it. I think it was a practical joke that Gygax played on the world.

Things are simpler now, happily!

Glad you joined us, hope you have a blast! Go out there, and nearly knock them insane!

Welcome to the club chummer!

Plenty of 5e games recruiting over in the games looking for players section and bards and clerics are always a welcome site to any party. To quote another famous bard, "But it's the pelvic thrust That really drives you insane"

Thanks for joining us! Let us know if there is anything we can do to help you settle in!

Goodmorning Elth,

I once tried 2nd edition over here, cool DM lured me in and I never understood the rules. Maybe not the cleverest move to try 2nd after having played 5E ;-). There are always 5E games recruiting so it would not be hard to get into a game or two and clerics and bards are indeed really upgraded in 5E and have become slightly more powerful.
Just curious, what was the best character you ever played? (Race and class?) And why was this character special to you?

Most important though, welcome at the Crossing, hope you have fun

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome ! I hope you are right about all those 5e games looking for people.

Indeed 2e was a nightmare but through nostalgia googles, it was an amazing time.

When it comes to my favorite character... Oh that's a hard one. There are so many that I loved for so many reasons.
The ones that easily come to mind would be a Cthulhu themed Great Old One warlock. It allowed me to have fun with crazy spell flavors, throwing out monstruosities, eldritch blasts made of non euclidian, space folding shapes driving the opponents just as insane as the character was. Very interesting to play a character that had peered into the abyss and used the resulting madness to fuel his powers.

Another was an absolutely dumb and clumsy half-orc Wardrummer (flavored bard) , using a huge modified mace on which he put bells and little maracas. He ended up convinced to be an avatar of Beshaba, persuading himself that he was capable of divine magic, calling simple hits with his mace divine smites. This one ended up with a character quirk replacing any roll of 1 with 20, and 20 replaced by 1s. Party interactions were hilarious, even if he almost died a couple of times trying to turn undeads or stupid actions like that.

Overall I'd say that what made those characters REALLY special for me aside from their flavors was the people I was playing with, any char ends up being boring if you don't have a good party with whom to banter.
