The Red Champions of Luk

The Nation

Name: The Merchant Fortress of Luk and the Red Champions
Race makeup: Humans and Dwarves mostly but any are welcome, status is based on personal skill and merit, from the master gunsmith and the merchant that sells his wares to the Red Champion Trooper, a skilled veteran of the war.

Homeland terrain: The fortress and surrounding town rest atop a defensible mesa, defenses carved into the rock by Dwarven stonemasons and with a natural spring providing fresh water from within the keep, which forms a broad, shallow river year round, a large delta leading into the nearby ocean creating a vast flood-plain year-round. The silty soil perfect for crops and the earth beneath the mesa rich with iron. Using the hotspring, the dwarves who have lived here for centuries have harnessed the natural heat and experimented with steam power and learned to harness it, creating walking steam engines for war, providing heat and running water for the city through a vast sewer system. Gas lamps light the streets and the dwarven defenders have long since carved defenses into the mesa itself, hidden tunnels allowing troops to move quickly and undetected in the city and out of the city. Riflemen man the ramparts and sappers operate cannon and other large weapons of war.

National mindset: After a long war the citizens have grown close to one another. Having had to depend on one another for so long. Originally the outpost of a single great merchant house, a weapons manufacturer who guarded the mesa fiercly for control of its iron, over the centuries other merchant families have risen to prominence, leaving the progenitor House Kalarr, dealers of arms and armor from studded leather to fullplate and clubs to rifles and cannon. House Nentor, who own nearly all of the surrounding farmland and ranches, and House Cand. Who deals in luxury items, furniture, clothing, and medicine. Most citizens are members or servants of the great houses though individual merchants exist. Religion is not regarded as important and magic is considered a weakening crutch. Technology is focus and a citizen of Luk will always regard something made by ones own hands than a creation of magic.

Government type: meritocracy

Background: Centuries ago the Dwarven House Kalarr was driven from beneath the earth in a great feud and was exiled to the surface. They started the outpost of Luk, building a fortress in the mesa and being a house of warriors and artisans. They were armor and weapon smiths, proud of their craft and eager to sell. Over the hundreds of decades that followed they slowly allowed others to settle around their fortress, the Human Nentors being the first family who farmed the nearby delta and river, offering food for protection and soon growing in an economic power itself. Following after were the Cands and together the three grew the town into a prosperous merchants haven. A well-defended city where artisans came to improve their craft and pass it on to others. The Red Champions were allowed to take up shop and quickly grew, the houses own guards growing insufficiently powerful to protect their own caravans despite their advanced equipment and technology. During the war when the guards of the city left in an act of cowardice and betrayal, leaving the gates open for invaders. Without hesitation, the Champions led by Arius took charge of the cities defenses, having grown to know the fortress as home and under the Iron Mountains leadership survived the long war, the Mercenary Commanders men already fearsome and well-trained now some of the best equipped soldiers in the world, wielding rifles, riding purebred Nentor horses and being well taken care of by Cand doctors. Unsure of its future, the city is sure of two things. The leadership and protection of Commander Arius Norrath and his Champions, and the power of technology

Its resources are a prized, large natural hot spring which the first fortress was bult around. Rich mines filled with iron and silver and a river delta which creates silty floodplain for farming as it leads to the nearby sea.
