Alana purses her lips in thought as she cups her chin in her hand. Shaking her head, she replies, Never seen him. Nor the other guy. I think the farmer may live somewhere around here, but I can't be sure I've ever seen him either.

The Paladin finishes his fruity drink and stands, stretching. "Well, might as well be off to see the Duke."
To Alana he smiles warmly "Thank you for the warning, it is appreciated. But if there was no danger involved then he would simply send his own guardsman in to do the job, and wouldn't need such as us at all. I will do my best to bring the others back safely, don't worry. They all seem like strong warriors, so I am sure we will have no trouble at all." Putting his full pack on one shoulder, he slips the longbow onto the other and heads for the door, walking backward a couple of steps to make sure the others were following before opening it and heading toward the meeting.

As everyone is preparing to leave, Tedd pulls Moradin over. They talk quietly for a few seconds when Moradin looks back at the group and says Yeah, this group of scoundrels be good.
Tedd comes out from behind the bar and speaks in a low tone looking around making sure you are alone, Good luck boys, er, um and ladies. I, uh, we, don't know how much longer we can stay. Our savings are almost all gone and things don't look so good. If things ever get bad, we plan on using the smuggling tunnel to get out. Ain't been down there in many years--no need to smuggle anything any more. Goods aint taxed on a regular basis as you saw. The tunnel leads to the old Cayden Abbey in their wine cellar. The tunnel has a magic door on it so nobody can see it. I gave the password to Moradin. If you find yourself in a tight spot or if you find us gone, you know where to go. |

The Paladin stops, concerned "Things are that bad? But surely they wouldn't intentionally Tax you out of buisness... We are going to talk to the Duke now, would you like me to ask him for a temporary stay on the taxes, until you get back on your feet..?"

Tedd leans on the bar, looked tired and dejected. Son, I'm not sure the Duke is in charge of Brad or the other way around. Not sure even how much of the "taxes" gets passed on. Brad Weston, that thug Braden's uncle, is the captain of the guards and lately it seems he's running the town. You can ask the Duke, but I don't think he can change it even if he wanted to.

"Aye, it not be changing much. The duke be knowing whats going on, how could he not be, but its not like he can do anything about it." Moradin piped in gathering up his pack and strapping on his shield before continuing. "The main problem be that the captain, well he's one tough piece of work, and has control of the guard. There be noone to take his place, noone willing to stick around long enough for that. I be seeing what we can do Tedd, How much he be saying ye be owing him?"

"We can always take Brad out if necessary." Bareris said, "I think there is something deeper going on. Why else would a priest of the Destroyer show up here?"

Azura rose from her chair, and listened to the conversation between Carroway, Moradin and the innkeeper. She held her tongue - not knowing much about taxes nor the current situation in Old Crossroads. She'll follow the rest of the party as they move out.

"What ye mean a priest of the destroyer, here in True Crossroads?", Moradin asked in a bit of surprise.

Oh my! Alana exclaimed. You mean that man you asked me about? I saw him come into town alone on horseback. While the Duke was talking to you. He came straight here and joined the other two.

"Great, as if things weren't complicated enough, well I guess we be finding out whats really be going on as we go about cleaning the place up, " Moradin told the other shrugging as if it couldn't be too bad. Although in truth it did concern him a good bit, even if his stubborn face refused to show it. "Speaking of which, we should be getting a move on, it not be good to keep royalty waiting. They start getting crazy things like plans going on in their head, and the last the we be needing is a duke with plans. You two take care of yerself, and get out without looking back if things do turn south."

Alana answers Bareris, I'm not entirely sure, but I think I heard the horse leaving town. Certainly he didn't go through the market towards the guard barracks or the other way to the Duke's estate.

Jaya sets her dagger on the table, thinking nothing of it as they're all alone in the tavern now. Dropping the meat Alana had given her into her pack, she waits a few seconds before reaching in and retrieving the mug of water, now empty and also sets it on the table. Seemingly oblivious to the fact that the others have started getting ready to go, she takes the time to put the dagger back in her glove, and checks that everything is in place in her pack, securing the straps and rechecking them.
Content that everything is in it's place, she stands and gently puts the pack on her back, again checking the straps, giving a tug on them making them just a bit tighter. Walking directly to Alana, cutting through the group, she places a single gold piece in her hand, then walks to the door, waiting for the others.
