VictorVictor listened intently, reproducing the visualization of the stories in his head. Vicsious battles, landscapes forever scorched thousands upon thousands lying dead. The struggle between angel and demon has always been and there is little evidence that will ever end; yet somehow, angel and demon were living together here in the fortress, even he and Vyxl seemed to be able to work together.

The great race struck Victor as odd though. In what possible way could it solve the strife between the two? Again, he listened closely, savoring every bit of information as though it nourished him somehow. Finally, the real reason was revealed: deception. Though why was the fiend so intent on corrupting these monuments? When Mira finally revealed the nature of what Eligos did it brought further questions to his mind.

"Why would Eligos be so intent on creating far travel? And why only allow it from a twisted creature rather than giving the secret to the people? It seems like there is more to it than this story let's on," the Aasimar asked. Regardless of what the reason, the book that she read from was like a waterskin of cool soring water to a man stranded in a desert; he had to try to get his hands on it if possible, to study it. Hundreds of years of history existed within its pages that could benefit them in understanding how the world worked now.

Kosk WolfhookKosk kept up with the tale as best he could, but his childhood stories were of barghests - not great angelic and demonic struggles. The archivist's account sounded far fetched to him. Even if it was true, it didn't really concern him, did it? He didn't think so. However, when the archivist mentioned a way to return, he quickly regained interest. "And this Thunder. Would he grant us permission?"

The Archives"Who can know the mind of an elder devil? Eligos was a Duke back in Hell. perhaps for his own convenience, perhaps to grow the first Beasts." She explains to Victor's question. "Perhaps the travelling was a happy accident alongside some other purpose. Eligos was a hunter first and foremost. The opportunity to lay a trap that would slay an Archangel may have been enough for him."

"Thunder is a good bird, and a fine judge of character. He would open his wings for you, unless he thought you a threat to his territory. Then he'd kill you without a second thought." A worried look settles beneath her hood and frames. "But you came through the stones. You should have seen him. Was he not there?"

Victor"The stones we came through were the ones next to the village south of here. As you said, they are of no use as the guardian there has not existed for a while," Victor stated. "Our origination was not with Thunder. We were confronted with a bear-like beast that had no eyes, a serpant tongue and thick hide; far to the East of here from our best recollection of the maps we saw."

It was hard to say whether or not an indication of attacking the beast was a good idea or not. Some of the creatures are apparently good while others are corrupted and twisted forms.

Having indicated their origination point, though hopefully not too specific, Victor wondered whether they should reveal they were from the dome or not. They were currently not far from another dome as well, but how did Adigal feel about that dome? Was there a curiosity or was it deep hatred? Perhaps it was nothing more than a legend of some great power he wished to get his hands on. Regardless of the reason, they had to find a way to meet with him and to convince him that they should be the ones to first enter the castle inside.

"We have also heard that there is a dome of light nearby. What can you tell us of it? And why is Adigal so interested in it?" It was blunt, but there wasn't much other way to approach the subject.

It was difficult for Vyxl to grasp the thought that Demons and Devils could get bored of slaughter, but then he remembered about himself. Perhaps I'm not so unique after all. he thought to himself as he thought on his desires. If at first he wasn't listening, now he was listening fully, scratching his chin, and imagining the details in his mind.

"Although I must admit my history is a little rusty, the tale is interesting none-the-less. I found the trap rather amusing."

He watches Victor and Kosk for a second as they say there peace. "Oh, I'm sorry to say. I tried to talk to it, to get it to back down, but unfortunately it decided to attack instead."

The Archives"The dome of light? Is that up again? I must get out more." Archivist Mira seems unimpressed with her own knowledge of current events. "Lord Kamus has sent men to patrol and investigate a castle that stood before the heavens fell. It had been surrounded by some form of magic barrier for centuries. Anyone that touched it would lose any appendage that passed through. Terrible business."
She mumbles to herself for a moment, trying to remember more details. "The dome of light though, it stays for a few days, then disappears. Very strange, there are all sorts of rumours about it, but no hard evidence.

Mira doesn't seem worried at all about the lack of a guardian beast at the ruins. "There's always another. The magic Eligos bound to the stones will create a new guide when it can. A week, maybe. A month, a year, but it will become operational again in time. Until it does, we simply walk."

VictorThe dome of light just flickers on and off? I wonder if their magister is ok, the Aasimar pondered, remembering the condition of their own protector and dome. If Renois wakes up maybe he can tell us what is going on.

"Are all of the guardians willing to help any travelers, or do they follow some sort of alignment? If one dies, such as Thunder, will it be replaced with a creature of the same disposition," Victor queried as thoughts of how powerful the magic could be raced through his head. If the guardians can be replaced, then when was the last guardian of the stones south of them killed? Do the types of creatures in the area affect how long it takes for a guardian to be created? Or was it the amount of magic applied to the stones that determined it?

There were so many questions with no where near enough time to get them all answered during their short stay. "How far must we travel in order to reach Thunder? We need to return to our land soon to find what has become of the rest of our party. Half of them were left behind while the rest of us were sent here." There was also the option of trying to buy horses, or whatever the equivalent was now, and traveling back that way. Regardless of their choice, they would be heading into unknown territory.

"On another topic," Henry began to broach the subject, "Do you happen to have a map of the nearby lands that we might be able to purchase a copy of? I would also be interested in a tome like that one," he indicated the tome upon the lectern with a nod of his head. "We do not know of the lessons that you refer to, but it seems as though they were taught from that book. Would it be possible to borrow such a book or perhaps purchase one?"

It was a long stretch to think that the Archivist would part with such a valuable book, but there had to be other copies somewhere, or at least some version of a book that was even remotely close to the same level of detail; especially if their young were given lessons about such things.

Kosk WolfhookKosk was starting to understand how sheltered he had been. There was a whole world, an entire mythology (or reality) that he had been previously unaware of. Sure, he knew something was going on when these people emerged from their fortress, but he had never heard what had led up to whatever catastrophe happened before he was born. His upbringing was focused on hunting, surviving, and fighting. He had been warned as a child to stay away from places like this, but doing so had only held him back. He resolved to be better.

"Walk, eh? How long of a walk?" he sucked at his teeth as he thought. And what could be between here and there? Has anyone even gone that far?

Vyxl sighed at the prospect of having to walk back, would they be lent horses, or would they be forced to make the trip by foot? He thought about the idea for a bit, all the while listening into as much of the conversation as he could. He thought about asking a couple questions, then quickly decided against it.

How long before they realize that we are not of this time? he wondered to himself.

Archives"Most, yes. They are created to serve a purpose, and they tend to do so. A few have turned rogue before, maybe a handful over the last three hundred years? Started preying on nearby communities, abandoning their stones. Our men slew Thunder's forebear when it learned it could collapse the buildings in Santmare at night, and eat those asleep inside. That was seventy-so years ago though now." Mira responds, estimating the passage of time as best she could. "Yes, about that. Just after I was initiated by Kamus Iragan."

"Thunder should be near his stones, where you came from. Unless he's off hunting. Some guides can go a long while without eating, but they do all still require food." Closing the book and laying it back on the shelf, she addresses the next concern. "You're welcome to read through it, just be careful. We don't allow our manuscripts to leave the compound, but we could perhaps arrange for another copy to be made. The Chief Engineer, or the Sutlership failing that, should have spare maps for sale."

Vyxl chuckled a bit upon realization that the creature they slaughtered was merely trying to "help" them. "Is there a way to communicate to them, or are they generally not capable of such intelligence?"

Were you aware of the plans to create such creatures? he asked his blade telepathically, Whether or not I knew is irrelevant. It goes to show that the well thought out tactics by the Devil in command of them. What better way to conquer the world than to have the ability to teleport across the land unhindered? Vyxl made a subtle nod, and then focused back on the conversation. It was obvious to him that Tyranus was beginning to get bored, and angry at being stowed away. He was a proud creation after all. Although he was capable of acting like a normal sword for the sake of subtlety, he didn't like it one bit.

Victor"A copy would be much appreciated. How long do you think it would take to create," he asked as the older woman finished telling them where they could find maps. Victor then turned to their guide, "Would you be able to take us to the Chief Engineer? I would like to get a map if possible."

He realized that he hadn't had a chance to really talk with his companions though, wondering what they were thinking beyond the questions they had asked of Mira. A meeting with the lord of this keep would be nice, more information on the Sennic Envoy and additional details on the dome that keeps appearing and disappearing.

"Would you allow us a moment to converse in private before taking off?"

Kosk Wolfhook"Why do you need all that? Books, texts." Kosk knew reading didn't steal your soul - his family didn't hold to that particular goblin tenant - but he really didn't see the use. Maybe if the text cleared up exactly what these gates and guardians were. "Let's just get out of here, one way or another."
OOCKosk's confusion isn't just in character. I'm a little lost on a couple of things. Here's my understanding:
We killed this guardian thing, it teleported us. A different guardian (old Thunder?) should have been at the stones we ended up at, but was not there. However, some of whats been said implies that they are one guardian? Or maybe I'm just misunderstanding.

OOCOld Thunder is the guardian of the gate we ended up at, but it was also said that they can travel away from the gates to go hunting and what not. It sounded like they can travel a distance, but not extremely far.

The original guardian we killed seemed to be good and willing to help us, but we attacked it because we weren't sure what it was and only knew that it was making it impossible for others to hunt in the area because they were afraid of it.

Each stone has a different guardian. If one is killed another will arise in time, not likely to be the same as before and not even assured to be good/evil/lawful/chaotic. They are beings that can learn and use their powers how they wish it seems, but mostly they start out by helping teleport people to other places.

That's my understanding at least.

"If I put a few acolytes to work, by tomorrow afternoon?" Mira estimates. "Figuring you don't want the illuminated fanciness, of course."

"Certainly." Runner Thomos agrees, leading the group upstairs, out of the archives, and back to the courtyard. "Take a moment among yourselves." He paces several feet away, just enough to be out of earshot, but keeping the three visitors in sight.

When the party is ready to continue, he leads them down a wide track between the palace and the eastern overlook. The sounds of hammering steel ring down the path, as engineers repair and produce the artillery surrounding the fortress.

A burly man swings his hammer menacingly, bellowing orders at the engineers and soldiers under his command.
"NO. NO. NO, For ire's sake! Put it IN THE DAMNED CORNER! It's no good to me here!" The veins on his forehead bulge as he fixes a steely gaze on the object of his wrath with his one good eye. "Stuff it. Just go. Come back in the morning when you're ready to pay attention!"
The admonished soldier salutes the enraged man, mumbles a quick 'Yes, Chief Engineer, Sir!' and slinks past the group, hastening to get away.

"And what do you want NOW, Thomos?!" he shouts at your guide, answering his own question before the Runner can respond. "Visitors? I don't have time for visitors, unless they're here to be put to work!"
