The Primrose Guard

Game NameThe Primrose Guard
Game SystemDnD 5e
ThemeOpen World Adventure
FlavourUndecided, my campaigns tend to be more casual and fun, players will have a lot of agency.
Plot SummaryThe King of Telia has sent a decree to every corner of his domain. He has requested adventurers to guarantee his daughter safe passage to the neighboring kingdom. The request was sent out with all haste, but with the news came rumors of a political marriage. More intriguing than that, the neighboring country in question has never opened its borders to Telian citizens before and nothing is known about it. Will you answer the call?

Telia is exactly what you would expect from a generic D&D setting if you only ever read the 5e PHB, every race/subrace is represented and most populations have a generous mix of all races. Telia also has enormously diverse geography; Mountains, swamps, cliffs, plains, lakes, forests of all kinds, coast, desert, city, you name it Telia has it. So get creative.

This game will be what you make it, whether you choose to see your quest through or abandon the princess at the first sign of trouble. I will allow near-total freedom (with exceptions, of course, I do expect the party to stay together). Expect the game to be more lighthearted in tone. Plan on a heavy emphasis on RP over combat. But when combat does come plan on hard fights with narrow margins of victory.

Application deadline: 1/15/2020
I intend to post at least once a day, I understand that is a demanding pace and can dial it back as needed.

I honestly don't mind if you roll in this thread
Character Submissions
Currently only allowing material from PHB and Xanathar's guide
Characters start at Level 3 (1000XP)
Name:
Race:
Class:
Subclass:
Background:
Personality:
Ideal:
Bond:
Flaw:
Why: what made your character answer the king's decree
OOC why: Why do you want to play the character you have created?

When determining stats use this array:
16, 15, 14, 11, 9, 7
HP: Characters get max HP from all 3 levels
Starting items/gold: based on Class/Background +65gp
All characters also get 1 trinket from the trinket table in the PHB

If the +2 bonus from your character's race doesn't improve your character's primary stat you get one (1) feat. (ex. Half-orc bard, Half-orc gets +2 STR and +1 CON, Bard main stat is CHA)

If you take the Weapon Master feat your character starts with an extra weapon of your choice. (you must be proficient with that weapon)
Humans get no feat but an additional +1 to their 2 lowest stats

If you find yourself short on ideas try picking a feat and working backward from there.

I am looking for 3-6 characters with strong and unique concepts

Placeholder for a Forge Cleric. First ad that I've seen this week that allows XGtE. I'm so glad because that is my favorite book released by wizards for 5e

Question about the setting; is it using the usual Faerunian pantheon or does it have it's own gods? I'm adapting a character concept I've had for awhile to this, and I just wanted to know.

I'm always hesitant to request homebrew, but...

https://www.google.com/amp/s/dungeon...-to-pdf-in/amp

I would love to play one of these, with two alterations. 1.) I don't want the telepathy. 2.) I don't want the wild shape. Basically I just want to play a cat who goes on an adventure because it would be very whimsical and also just seems like it would be a super fun thing to do. I'm willing to alter the race further at your discretion if it will make my dream of playing an adventuring cat a reality.

Woodwind

Race: Kenku | Class: College of LoreBard | Gender: Male
Alignment: CN | Background: Ideal: Respect – All people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
Bond: The Kenku deserve a better lot in life.
Flaw: There's no room for caution in a life lived to the fullest.
Entertainer | Trinket: A whistle made from gold-colored wood, given to Wood by his former mentorWhistle

Appearance: Wood stands about 5’ 8”, 110 lbs., giving him a rather lanky build. He has a dark, orange beak and skin, with glossy black feathers. While Wood generally keeps his feathers clean, they are thick and somewhat unkempt, covering his eyes and poking out from underneath his clothes.

Personality: Wood has a very relaxed disposition, preferring to nap during the day than scheme like some of his Kenku brethren. It may be partially due to this laziness that Wood rarely engages in illegal activity. Though he doesn’t begrudge others doing what they need to survive, his chosen method of getting by has always been performing music and complex dance for coin, wearing a number of costumes that he makes himself. That said, he still possesses a Kenku’s inherent skill with trickery, which he makes use of for personal amusement or to get out of jams. He is naturally gifted at playing the fool to get the better of a foe, hiding a sharp and gifted mind behind his peaceful persona.

Despite the ability of his kind to mimic speech, Wood’s library of spoken words is limited. He prefers to use non-verbal communication, though he is willing to attempt speech when it’s necessary. He has few lasting friendships, but is friendly to strangers, especially children. In an ideal world for Wood, people would always treat one another with respect, kindness, and charity, removing the need for people like his kind to beg and steal to get by. To that end, Wood has great dislike for bullies, tyrants, and other sorts who prey on the weak.
StoryBackstory: Woodwind wasn’t always Woodwind… in his youth, he had no name. Though he had a typical kenku upbringing, living in cities and towns among local “flocks” and scraping to get by, he never knew his birth parents... maybe that was part of why he never felt attached to any one place, and began drifting when he was very young. He’d live in a place for a few weeks, helping his brethren and making coin until he got bored, at which time he picked up and traveled somewhere new with whatever merchant caravan might be passing through. The young kenku encountered many types of people in his travels, but the ones that really stuck out in his mind; bards. The traveling minstrels who shared songs and tales of glory wherever they went, collecting coin and living life to the fullest.

That was how the kenku met Samuel Kellaid, the man that would go on to teach him everything he knew. The youth never knew exactly why the aging songsmith took him under his wing, so to speak… but Samuel was a true master of his craft. He inspired a level of creativity in the kenku that he’d previously thought not to exist. Kenku were, after all, cursed with the inability to speak like other races, their minds clouded and forced to communicate through mimicry. Samuel taught him ways around it though… taught him to use magic and art to express what he thought to others. He taught him dance, and how to use instruments. The bird had a little trouble with the flute, having no lips to purse… but he got along alright anyway, producing the trills and melodies from his beak instead. That was how Samuel decided what to call his apprentice… Woodwind.

The two grew very close, until eventually, old age began to catch up with Samuel. Most in his line of work retired in middle age, enjoying their wealth, or otherwise, finding a less transient trade, but Kellaid had always kept to the craft he so loved. Having a young apprentice made the traveling and performing a little easier, but… it was time to face facts.

On his deathbed, Samuel left what he had to Wood. It wasn’t much, a bit of money, some personal effects and instruments, including his old whistle. Wood didn’t care though; he treasured them all, and swore he would carry on what he’d learned in the memory of his old friend.

And so Wood set out… to see more of the world, like he and Samuel had always talked about… to make some stories of his own.

Why: Wood's reason for joining up is simple... a call to adventure such as this is far too good to pass up. Wanderlust has always been in his blood, a trait he shared with his late master. For him to turn his back on an opportunity to accompany a princess on a secret mission into a neighboring land previously closed to the citizenry... why, Samuel would be turning in his grave. Wood just hopes when he appears at the castle, they say yes...
OOCWhy do you want to play this character?: I've been fortunate to explore a lot of character concepts in my time on this website and in irl games. One that I've always found intriguing, but never had a chance to fully explore, is the kenku bard. Bards are an incredibly fun, versatile, interesting class to play that work well in virtually any party, but I see a lot of people role-play them very similarly. The flirtatious bard is one example of a pretty used up trope. Somewhat similarly, I find that kenku are underutilized, but usually played in the same roles; rogues, rangers, sneaky cutthroats, etc. It's no surprise since their skillset kind of makes them perfect for those roles, but the kenku's curse/blessing of mimicry presents a really cool opportunity for roleplay, especially when applied to a different archetype. I love the idea of a bard who can do perfect impressions on command, dropping sound effects for comedic purpose, vocalize instruments to harmonize with the ones he's physically playing, etc. He'll be charismatic, but not a blowhard; just a friendly and supportive ally who elevates those around him as he genuinely revels in watching the story of his own party unfold before his very eyes.

Erm, I hate to be the downer here WeBeGoblins, but wouldn't losing the telepathy mean you can't communicate properly? It outright says in the langauge bit that you understand common, but are unable to speak and write it.

I'd argue not being able to communicate with human words doesn't negate being understood; it faces similar challenges to playing a mute character. Sharing specific information would often be difficult for sure, but figuring out how to overcome that challenge would be part of the fun.

Plus, in my experience cats are very assertive communicators, both vocally and physically.

Wow... what are the chances two of the first three interested parties would request characters that can’t properly speak common? That’s kind of hilarious.

I get the feeling that my gypsy tiefling paladin may be doing a lot of relaying information.

Yeeeeaaaah, it seems like that would be the case. We'd potentially be the first adventuring party that absolutely cannot be taken seriously when initially encountered.

Not the most ideal situation when looking for imposing bodyguards... but then of course you could think of it the other way.

Nobody would look at a group like that and ever believe wed be trusted to escort someone even REMOTELY important.

Its the perfect plan.

It's almost TOO perfect...

One of my ideas involved being the princess's pet that she absolutely insists on bringing with her, so it would make sense for a cat to be there. I have a few different ideas, but I'm not really fleshing them out in my head a lot in case the race doesn't get okayed.

"Yeah, this cat can lob a fireball and annihilate a group of cultists, and this bird can charm a whole tavern full of nobles into wanting to sleep with him. Me? Oh, I'm just a regular old girl from a group of nomads. I'm told I trust people too much and that I've no common sense, but I've gotten on just fine throughout the years."

(writer's note: I have NO idea if the cat can lob a fireball. Also, editor's note, this girl has pearly white skin and horns, a long smooth tail, and goat feet. She's anything but normal.)

Malori Kaleja
right-aligned image

Name: Malori Kaleja
Race: Tiefling
Class: Paladin
Subclass: Oath of Devotion
Background:
Ideal: Greater Good. It is each person's responsibility to make the most happiness for the whole tribe.
Bond: My family, and tribe is the most important thing in my life, even when they are far from me.
Flaw: I'm slow to trust outsiders.
Outlander
Why: Malori hopes to make her tribe's treatment better by delivering the princess safely to her destination. Also, she wants to see the princess firsthand, and befriend her.
Personality: Malori is almost too good a person for her own good. Naive, endlessly optimistic and happy, and incredibly friendly, her happiness is infectious to everyone. Believing in the good of everyone, even if they seem bad, and happily attempting to redeem them.

Her naivety is...perhaps too far, though. She only recognizes when people are lying to her when she has trusted information to the contrary, and the girl has no common sense. No sense of the usual positioning and fealty and respect given to people of higher status. Everyone was equal in the tribe, and she never learned otherwise.

Why OOC: It's an idea I've had on the backburner for awhile after she was made as a backup for an in person campaign, and I've really wanted to use her. I don't often play characters that act in this way, so I'd like to try doing it.
How would Malori react if the princess hated her?: "Well...that wouldn't be nice, considering that she'd be making her bodyguard angry with her. I'll just have to earn her trust! I'm sure if I perform well, she'll turn around. Probably."
If Malori could go back in time and train as a different class, would she?: "Ooh, ooh, I've always wanted to do those fancy things that those magic guys who perform on the streets do!...that's not real magic? Oh. Well, regardless, I wouldn't trade the blessings of Lathander for anything, really. People like me more now."
How would Malori react if her own naivety got a close friend killed?: "That...wouldn't happen, right? I'm good at protecting people, so I wouldn't let someone die on my watch! But, uh, if it happened...I don't know. You can't really predict that sorta thing, and even if you could..."
What feat are you gonna pick?: I've been considering Polearm Master or Sentinel, and while normally I think I would go for Sentinel first it doesn't really...work well without a map to work off of, so...probably Polearm Master? What ideas did you have?

That would be no trouble at all to fit into my game. I think that would be a joy to run. My rulings would be these:
1) No Wild Shape
2) You have the telepathy feature but it only applies to the last creature you touched

This setting houses all the gods. They exist in a sort of "Pantheon of Domains" You could pray to Pelor or to Ra, the Radiant energy comes from the same place.

I don't see the kenku's limitations being much of a problem for that particular character. One tweak though, you must take Message as one of your cantrips, but you may cast it as a bonus action, and the target creature will understand the message.

please noteI reserve the right to keep tweaking stuff until it's balanced
