New Arrival
Let's get this out of the way - I'm a writer / storyteller by desire. Let me sink my teeth into a character and a tale, and I'm a happy camper. As far as systems go, DND 5e is my preference. I'm willing to learn other systems but that's where my experience is. My preference for setting is fantasy: high, low, or modern/urban. I'll happily dive into any game in that genre. My dislike are settings that are unrelentingly dark or grim. Curse of Strahd is my least favorite module, never finished it despite several attempts. I'm CAN play dark or unsettling scenarios, angst, edge, whatever, but I gotta know that's what I'm getting into so I can make an appropriate character. Otherwise I burn out on the experience. It's been a long time since I've played in a forum setting like this. I have experience in gaming and dming play-by-post up to about 7 years ago, admittedly in homebrew or freeform systems. I don't have interest in DM'ing at this time. If anyone knows any games that are looking for players, shoot me a link. |

Welcome to RPG Crossing, Thread! DnD5e is a pretty handy preference around here. There are new game ads up in the Games Seeking Players forum, and also check out the continuous recruitment links there. The New Player Solo Game (you should have received a private message with a link to this) is worth checking out too -- it's a short game that'll give you a running start in the community here. Have fun exploring and let us know if you have any questions!

Welcome to RPG Crossing.
I too highly recommend checking out the New Player Solo Game in the main forum's Solo Games/New Gamers folder. There are 13th Age, Call of Cthulhu, DnD (3.5, 4, 5), FATE, Pathfinder (1), and Travelers many game systems to pick from and once signed up, you will be paired with a patient and helpful GM that can help show you the ropes of how to do things at this site. They can also be an excellent person to ask any questions to while you are getting up to speed on things. All these things can be done with the Hero System. Champions, Dark Champions, Star Hero, and Monster Hunter International (that is based on the novels of the same name). So, ever wanted to be a superhero fighting crime to make the world a safer place? Or don a mask and make the criminals fear your brand of justice? Or go where no man has gone before and explore the outer reaches of the known universe and beyond? Or have you ever wanted to join the Monster Hunter International (MHI) team to track down things that go bump in the night while the Monster Control Bureau (MCB) does everything they can to keep those things a secret and dreading the day you have to deal with the Special Task Force Unicorn (STFU) teams from the MCB? Anyway, enjoy your time here and let us know if you have any questions.

Howdy Thread,
What an awesome username, and it sounds like it fits your playstyle. It sounds like you are an experienced player. I'm a D&D guy too (5e now but my favorite is AD&D) who enjoys fantasy, but I have played many other RPG systems. As far and coming to a site to role play and tell stories rather than just roll play...have you ever come to the right place. There is some incredible role playing going on here. I thought I was a a pretty good story teller, but I have been put to shame by the quality of some of the players...and I have learned a lot. I sent a link to one such site I've been lucky enough to be a part of below. You should check out the Hall of Fame games over the years for others. As Kenjitsu has said, you may want to check out a solo game. Even if you have PbP experience each site is a bit different. This is a place where the people are welcoming, where the games are interesting, and where generally they only expect you to post a few times a week. I've been playing D&D for a very long time and I thought I've seen it all, but this site has some amazing games going on. I've been playing (storytelling as much as rolling) for a bit over two years now in a game that has been going on continuously for four decades, started tabletop and moved online two decades ago. It's set in an alternate Europe where the worlds of Tolkien and Howard existed in ages past. So there is a hint of LOTR and a hint of Conan in it and since it's set in an alt Europe it somehow feels familiar. This is just one example and there are other great campaigns on RPGX. You should take some time to "stroll around" the site and see if anything catches your eye. I hope to see you around on the boards.

I'm confused, are you a writer or a happy camper? Cause most writers I know aren't happy when camping...in fact they are rather high-maintenance campers. But maybe I camp with the wrong crowd? (Ok, I don't camp. Or I do, but only in writing prompts.)
Anyway...delighted to see you join the site and a BIG welcome to you! I totally get what you mean about the grim campaigns. I think a lot of the modern scenarios/adventures get dinged because they have strayed from the true-roots of dark, grim old-school flavor, but the world is a pretty dark place anyway, so sometimes our games should be the opposite, right? BUT whatever type of game you like to play (and maybe that changes from year to year or month to month, which is vaild), you'll find one here. Even "Poets & Privies," the exciting new 2d6 system that sends out your party of writers into the great outdoors ... never to return again, dum, dum, dum dummmmm!

Welcome, PbP is a slower format so even if you do join other games you can use a solo game to try out ideas/styles/whatever. You also get an automatic friend - your DM.

Goodmorning TheThreadWeaver,
Welcome over here and I tried Curse of Strahd several times, as a player, but we never got far into the adventure unfortunately. There are always games recruiting, there is even a thread for that but rumors go one of the DM's over there has a rough December month :-s. But still, there is a waiting list in desperate need of character applications so if you are willing and patient, feel free to post in those 'Always Recruiting Games'. Besides that, since I am being very late to the welcoming party, what have you been up to so far?

Thank you for asking!
I've been slowly reading through different threads, trying to get my bearings on the website. I'm sorry to hear someone's having a rough December, but I can understand it. It's a rough month. I applied to the solo-game thread for 5e. I will read through the other spots you recommended! |
