Once a dragon, now a fleeing rat
Anybody who recognizes this username from Mythweavers, yes it's the same me. I don't much care for what's going on over there, but I heard about this place and figured I'd poke my head in, see what's what. Does anybody still play 3.5 D&D here? (Pushing my luck: at levels higher than 1?) |

Howdy SageBahamut,
You have come to the right place. We have quite a few D&D 3.5 games going on here. In fact, I'm in one that is a mix of 3.5 and 5e that I include a link to below. Tell us a bit about yourself. Do you prefer games that tell stories or hack and slash? What genre do you prefer (high fantasy, horror, science fiction, etc.). What is your favorite character class and race if you have one? Brie or feta? As far as finding games goes, try here. This is where there are games seeking players. It can be a bit daunting but don't give up. It may take a few applications before you get accepted...but it's worth it once you're in. This is a great place to scratch your RPG itch and interact with some great DMs and players. There is some incredible role playing going on here. I thought I was a pretty good story teller, but I have been put to shame by the quality of many of the players...and I have learned a lot. To start, you may want to check out a solo game. Even if you have PbP experience each site is a bit different. This is a place where the people are welcoming, where the games are interesting, and where generally they only expect you to post a few times a week. I've been playing D&D for a very long time and I thought I've seen it all, but this site has some amazing games going on. I've been playing (storytelling as much as rolling) for a few years now in a game that has been going on continuously for four decades, started tabletop and moved online two decades ago. It's set in an alternate Europe where the worlds of Tolkien and Howard existed in ages past. So there is a hint of LOTR and a hint of Conan in it and since it's set in an alt Europe it somehow feels familiar. This is just one example and there are other great campaigns on RPGX. You should take some time to "stroll around" the site and see if anything catches your eye. I hope to see you around on the boards.

There are still 3.5 games, but yes... they are fewer and further between than ever. Much of that group has moved to Pathfinder (or, 5e, but that's not the same). Hope you find your grail, but if not...consider PF, it's almost the same (better maybe?). Happy gaming!

Howdy SageBahamut, welcome to RPG Crossing.
Others have answered your question with the affirmative, but they might be hard to find. Hope you find something that interest you, even if it is in a different system. Let us know if you have any other questions. We are more than happy to help however we can.

Welcome! I'm not on ML but from what I know of it, we'll probably be pretty easy to get the hang of here. And yup, there's plenty of 3.5 stalwarts as well.

Ildrahil -- Thanks for the warm welcome!
As for my preferences, I'm a bit odd. I like powerful characters, but I prefer the roleplay and storytelling surrounding them rather than the actual mechanics of hack-and-slash. I might make a character who can conjure and command an army... but I'd rather roleplay strategy meetings and hanging out at his extradimensional castle than actually playing out the fights. I like playing crafting and support classes. In 3.5 my favorite is Artificer. In Black Crusade it's Warpsmith. Stuff like that. Maybe crafter with a side of immortal brick. Here's a couple of my favorite re-played characters for a sample: Xariphon (Black Crusade) -- Warpsmith of the Black Legion, Xariphon is a Chaos Terminator and fulfills the "immortal brick" archetype to a T... but he considers himself more scholar than warrior and would rather spend his time building daemon engines and studying sorcery than actually, y'know, waging wars of conquest or doing Chaos stuff. The last time I played him he had a human girlfriend who was a gladiatrix of Khorne; they bonded over a series of arm-wrestling matches (him in just robes vs her in power armor). Mirabelle Anne Martin (M&M 3e) -- Originally written for an MCU game, Miri is a ten-year-old girl whose powerset includes healing, but also biokinesis to a degree that verges into pure body-horror... and she had approximately the most traumatic power-awakening scenario I could come up with. The result is that she's a traumatized anxious mess who has to learn not to be afraid of her own powers. It doesn't help that she can't touch anybody without immediately knowing their entire medical history, whether she wants to or not (which is why she always wears stripey knit gloves and dresses to show basically no skin other than her face). The first time I played her, she grew up and got a girlfriend who was permanently in a forcefield and couldn't be touched... which made her "safe" for Miri, whose powers required skin contact. And since Miri could make herself resilient enough to survive Emmie's uncontrollable telekinetic super-strength, she was "safe" for her, too. Their retirement from that game was them getting married and moving to France to start a Masters of the Mystic Arts sanctum to replace the London one. and one whose story has never been adequately told (though someone on Reddit drew her for me once): Tamara Rurikovna, "Calls-The-Rage" (Werewolf: The Apocalypse) -- A pure-bred Silver Fang princess, born under the Warrior's Moon, Tamara was raised practically from birth to become a leader in werewolf society. And had she had her First Change in her mid-to-late teens like a normal girl, everything would've been fine... but hers hit when she was 13, and now she finds herself torn between the Werewolf world where she's treated like a noble (and got elected Alpha of her starting pack in two separate games) and the human world where she's barely even treated as a person. She's meant to explore themes of prejudice against young people, being a fish out of water, and having to rise to the occasion in a way you are only sort of actually ready for. Hotshot lasgun -- I do recognize that name! Good to see a familiar face. Admin Dirk -- I've tried Pathfinder and find that it's not my path. Kenjitsu -- 3.5 D&D might be my favorite, but I play a few systems. M&M3e, GURPS, 40K RPGs (Black Crusade, Deathwatch, Dark Heresy), old World of Darkness (everything but Wraith and Mummy). Tigra & HotsuSama -- Thanks for the welcomes! |

I just recently starting learning GURPS. It is a relatively transition from the HERO System that I love, since both systems are skill based instead of level based. Likewise both are frameworks that can be applied to any genre. My preference is for the sci-fi setting, specifically space opera style games. Unfortunately, those are rare to find.
Given your the list of other systems you play, would it be safe to assume that you prefer the fantasy version of GURPS?

Hey, SageBahamut! I think the game that Ildrahil mentioned might also be a migrant from your old site; in any case it's full of fellow refugees who also found a good home here and are continuing their game (originally an AD&D game and now a mix of 3.5 and 5e). It might actually be the type of flavor you're looking for!
But I'm sure you'll find your niche. There has been--for obvious reasons--a bit of a move from strictly 5e D&D games to homebrew mixed D&D games, and for many that seems like a beautiful thing to have in this world, and on this site. Hope you find your circle for high-power adventure.

Welcome to RPG Crossing, SageBahamut! 3.5e games aren't advertised as often these days. You might have some luck putting your interest in your signature. You could also try some clever searching and gentle asking whether DMs are looking for players in active 3.5 games. For example, I did a search in the 3.5e forum for the word 'roll' (you have to choose something...) and asked for threads less than 2 weeks old. Here is the result: https://www.rpgcrossing.com/search.php?searchid=1533583 (not sure how long that cached search is good for, but you could recreate it.) Start this kind of search from the 'search this game' dropdown rather than the top menu bar search; otherwise you'll never find the 3.5 forum in the mess that's there. Be gentle with big searches like this please -- just do one at a time, and be patient. Some of those games might have transitioned to Pathfinder, but you could shoot the DMs a pm with a kind query. Just a thought.

Leviticus -- No takers yet on a solo game, but here's hoping.
At the very least it's no more dead than the games I'm in on MW. Miri's game there hasn't had an update since... January 17. Maybe somebody wants to GM for one of my repeats? idk. Do you know anybody who runs Werewolf? Maybe Tamara could finally get into a game that doesn't just drop dead abruptly. (She's had this happen to her three separate times so far. GMs just ghosting games in progress.) |
