Leon doesn't quite manage to get past the lock, although he does come frustratingly close.

I'm losing my touch. Must be all that Halvan food. Desperately, Léon reached out with his mind, feeling and probing the lock to find the right pressure point. This better work.

Leon is still struggling with the difficult lock when he hears distant voices and heavy footsteps coming around the corner.

Typical. Léon wasted no more time with the lock. He knew that he would beat it eventually, but now was not the time nor the place. After giving the malicious locking device a look filled with hatred, the thief sliced open the shadows and tried to travel to a location within the High Priests' room. It was a thin sliver, but Léon hoped the wards did not stop interdimensional travel between rooms. Whatever the result the thief blended with his surroundings and spread out his senses hoping to find anything out of the ordinary - like a thief in a priests' room.

Fortunately Leon's gamble paid off, as the room itself was not warded, landing the Elernan in a large, dark, bedroom. He didn't sense any danger or hostility within the room, although it took him only a moment to realise he was not alone. From the soft breaths coming from the large canopy bed, Lady Ahilyeh was either still asleep or had been persuaded to retire again by her husband.
This sort of sneaking wasn't new to Leon though, and he was able to have a quick look around the room without disturbing her and, more importantly, he had found the stairway that led up to the study. It was a recess in the wall that had a steep spiral staircase inside. A quick look over for any traps revealed an indentation in the wall, most likely an amulet-shaped key or something similar, although what it did exactly was another matter. ~MTWC

Do sleep on, my lady. Léon pulled another set of instruments from one of his many pockets. And now try to not act like a bumbling amateur. But apparantly he seemed to be losing his touch - trying to dismantle a trap while keeping silent enough to not wake the woman proved to be more difficult than he thought.

After checking out the indentation in more detail, he finds what appears to be a mechanism inside. If Leon had to guess, the 'key' was used to turn off something or to otherwise show that it was Ahilyeh himself coming up. Unfortunately Leon is distracted by the Lady's presence and isn't able to trip the mechanisms himself.

Clear pigeon: drunk con-artist victim
Cry cockles: be hanged.Stop acting like a clear pigeon or you're going to cry cockles. Léon mentally bitch-slapped himself. Under duress the thief reverted to his native slang, even mentally. And it seemed to work.

With some clay, pins and other bits and pieces he kept for just such an occasion, Leon was able to trip the mechanism and to lock it in place, although he didn't see or hear anything new. Perhaps it unlocked something up the stairs or disarmed a trap that trigger up there?

One down. Let's see what else the priest has got in store. Léon mounted the stairs, only after inspecting every step before softly planting his foot upon in. Catpaws. That's what we called it back in Elern. Keeping his eyes peeled, the thief expected nasty surprises around every corner.
