More seconds pass, and Morgan remains invisible to the crews of both ships, who see nothing other than a slack rope being pulled in by Storm. “Did she do it?!” Captain Schon demands of the other adventurers. “Where is she?” Even if Schon actually expects an answer, none is forthcoming.

Then Storm finally feels the rope jerk, and Morgan feels it much more, the harness ropes suddenly seizing her ribcage, halting her progress and dragging her to her right. “There!” cries Gil, pointing along the hypotenuse outlined by the taught rope, which still leads beneath the surface.

Looking over her shoulder to take all this in, Captain Schon makes a quick decision to bet on Morgan. She barks out a fresh series of orders, several of the crew move at once, the great boom sweeps across the deck, sails flutter, then refill, and the Journey makes a 90-degree turn.

Underwater, Morgan intuits that her best course is now to turn and swim with Storm’s pull, directly toward the Journey. The marine ranger covers several more yards underwater before the rope finally forces to the surface. There she hears voices from the Devil’s Fin, but her own splashing makes the words indecipherable. In fact, Morgan is oblivious even to the occasional crossbow bolt hitting the water around her.

Gil, however, witnesses the pirates’ renewed attacks, and the half-elf renews his efforts to draw their attention away. For several more seconds, he and the enemy ineffectually exchange fire again, until Morgan is nearly at the Journey’s side, and the pirates finally stop wasting their effort and ammunition.

The pirates stop, those aboard the Journey realize, not only because Morgan is no longer doing anything threatening – or weird, even – but because she has succeeded! While the Journey pursues its new course, the Devil’s Fin holds its original line, sliding pointlessly along to where the Journey was minutes ago. The crew of the Journey spontaneously erupt in cheer. It will be many more minutes before Journey has escaped the pirates’ sight, but all know the exchange is won.

Storm drags Morgan up the starboard side, but when the genasi reaches her hand over at the top rail, it is Captain Schon who grabs it. Smiling broadly and still holding the one hand with her other Schon slaps Morgan’s shoulder. She looks the genasi over quickly. “And not a scratch on you!” she declares. “That was a hell of a thing,” she says, and turns more serious. “You saved this ship and the crew,” Schon judges. She seems about to saying something more, but instead concludes with a final nod of gratitude.

OOCNo way was I mathing all of this out. The freezing worked, so I was happy to err everything else in the PCs’ favor.

Very cool solution! I certainly didn't expect things to go this way when I introduced it. That took a while, but I think it was worth it for something this cool. I'm glad y'all worked it out in the end. Thanks for the patience of those of you who were mostly spectating.

I'm taking just a short break here for any RP you'd like to do, then likely advancing things some days.

Storm Storm sees the cubes fail and begins to pull the rope. Luckily the original plan worked before he pulled away all the slack. As she returns the captain stepped in front of him and pulled her aboard. A sign of respect Storm nodds and steps away.

Seeing the pirates fade further into the background and all the ocean around him. "The dream" flooded his mind with fear yet again as others cheered.

Storm begins to head back below. " Sorry I must retire below now. The danger has past." And he is gone.

Gil watched the sagging rope run out abeam of the Fin, slowly pulling taught as Storm hauled it in. "There!" Schon gave orders, the crew reset sail, the pilot leaned into the rudder. The Journey came around, cutting across the wind, and he held his breath as the Devil's Fin...didn't. There seemed to be frantic activity on the distant deck, but the raider kept right on a course that now took it farther from the Journey with every second.

Gil let out a whoop and traded a few more volleys as the pirate ship shrank and Morgan drew closer. Storm hauled hand over hand, loop after loop of sodden rope piled up on the deck, and suddenly the pirate potshots were falling short and Storm was pulling Morgan up out of the water. Gil dropped his bow and signed a wide variety of rude gestures in the direction of the Fin. Storm didn't really seem up for celebrating and Morgan was maybe not the type for a hug, so he restrained himself as best as he could. "Propers, Storm! An' who just beat a whole damn ship one to one? That's you, Morgan, that was a sight ta see! Harder than nails, ya are!"

Morgan
right-aligned image

After the sabotage had been completed, all of Morgan's efforts were directed toward the return to the Journey. And although the hunter-gatherer was fit and athletic herself, with the aid of Storm's superior strength she made much better progress than she could have hoped. The waves and surf were roiling around her as she kept swimming along with the pull of the unfamiliar rope harness that had been fashioned for the primordial woman, but protected by the sea and her divine magic, Morgan faced her return to the vessel and managed to reach it unharmed. The genasi couldn't tell whether her act of sabotage had succeeded like she had meant as she scaled the side of the ship with Storm's appreciated help, but just as she reached the railing and assumed a bronze-scaled claw would aid her the rest of the way, a much smaller hand grasped her cool, outstretched hand and pulled her up and onto deck. And to Morgan's surprise, it was Captain Schon, smiling broadly. The primordial woman's blank face and searching eyes failed to express her apprehension, but just as soon as Schon slapped her on the back and began congratulating her, Morgan turned from confusion to the dim understanding that the captain was actually happy with her. And even further, the human that had acted so antagonistic and blasphemous before showed real admiration and gratitude for what Umberlee's own had achieved. And then Morgan looked over her shoulder to see that the Devil's Fin was staying its course into the wrong direction and relief overcame the waif as well as comprehension for Schon's reaction.

"I... succeeded..." The exertion from what she had just done was clearly felt after all that physical activity and the adrenaline that Morgan had felt during her act of determined bravery, but now that her prayers had been heard and both her magic and intent in saving this crew from harm had succeeded, there was a deep feeling of happiness welling up inside of Morgan as well. Like with all the other emotions that she richly felt most of the time, it never moved to her face. Yet when Gil joined by Schon's side and gave her praises as well, she couldn't help but look away a bit bashfully. It had been months since any others had directed such positive feelings at her so blatantly, but within seconds the water genasi had regathered herself and looked back at the two land walkers in front of her. A bit to the side Storm quickly excused himself as he fled from the sight of the ocean, but Morgan was wrapped up in elation herself, and even though she felt a pang of pity that the dragonborn seemed to be so very deeply afflicted, her heartfelt happiness at having shown her strength and having been able to protect her own was too great to be bleared right then. It was to the point that it was even a little uncomfortable to be now at the center of attention, but even in victory as the speaker of her tribe Morgan knew that it wasn't good to appear faltering or weak right then. "We... escaped... Because you are... under my protection." Even with her soft voice, the cleric sounded confident and firm in her sentiment. And although Morgan usually felt so distant from everyone else, right then she felt... accepted. It was weird to feel that way, but she recognized it inside of herself all the same. It even included Schon, and although the primordial woman right then didn't know what to do with those new feelings, as her green hair drifted in the air and framed her face she simply let herself flow with the waves of positivity and the cheers that now surrounded her.

After evading the Devil’s Fin, the crew of the Journey are in good spirits. A narrow escape from death will have that effect, but Schon’s subordinates also now enjoy the knowledge that they are protected by warriors competent enough to deflect the infamous tiefling pirate Captain Krule without sustaining the slightest damage. This mood of strengthened partnership is a significant improvement over the tensions evident at the start of the voyage.

The Journey does lose a few days in the exchange and the subsequent long evasion, but that is a very small price. In any case, the travelers arguably regain that time by bypassing Grumbulbarg, the humble capital of the small island kingdom. Captain Schon sees no need to stop there for repairs or for reinforcements. So it is that after first sighting land, the Journey spends three days in somewhat distant view of the rocky coast of Grumbulund that runs west from the capital to Fishbark, the adventurers’ destination.

On the third of these, the adventurers wake to a storm that began in the predawn hours. Only Morgan takes her usual place on deck, while those less enamored of water keep their shelter below. The Journey’s deck crew work in silence, grimly suffering wet, wind, and wobbling ship, lifting their faces only as absolutely necessary.

In contrast, Morgan watches all of Umberlee’s work on the seas with appreciation, so she is the first to make a discovery: to the south, further asea, a boat. It’s largely obscured by the lashing rain, but Morgan can see it keeling dangerously on the wind-stoked waves. Within it is a large bundle, about the size of a human.

Tolan was watching the entire plan play out with amazement from his perch. This was followed quickly by laughter as the other ship sailed harmlessly by. "I am glad I joined this group. It is going much better than the last time I was aboard a ship."

As soon as Morgan was on deck, the halfling grabbed a hold of a rope, and swung down where he was standing. When his boots touched the wooden planks, he tucked into a tumble and continued walking as though nothing had happened. Casually making his way to the group the rogue flicked his wrist and drew a dagger waving it around jokingly. "Good thing you showed that lot the mercy you did. I would have had to cut them all down single-handedly." He knew based on his last run in with pirates that in fact Morgan had saved his life more than the others. He would find a way to make things even.

As the journey continued, Tolan made it a point to show her how grateful he was. During one of the meal times, the halfling brought Morgan some food, handing it to her with a smile. "Hey listen, don't let the others know, but you saved my life when you stopped the pirates from attacking us. That was amazing. I have to say that I was scared, my last fight on a ship I barely made it and I thought for sure that it would have been my last....but you did what no other could....so...thank you." Jumping up on a nearby create, the rogue swung his feet as he ate the food.

When the storm began Tolan stumbled around below deck trying to keep his footing. He spend a lot of the time with the dragonborn making sure he was calm, or at least doing his best. "Do not worry my friend, just think of the amazing feat you accomplished. This storm is nothing, just stick near me and we will make sure we both get through it. This crew is well trained."

Storm Storm could feel the storm above. And it made him think of "The dream" flooding his mind with fear.

Storm was pacing below. When friend Tolan came. " It's ok Tolan. It feels as if the storm God's anger is directed else where. Unless it boils over to us it's just a storm...
But then again. Only Fools Get On Boats To Drown And Die Alone!"
And he paces back and forth.

Morgan
right-aligned image

After the day that the Devil's Fin had been surpassed, Morgan more or less returned to the same routine that she had followed before. But it couldn't be stressed further that it felt different. Her desire to protect this voyage and the duty she placed on herself for it remained the same. But to have changed the perception of those around her to one that welcomed having the primordial woman aboard. Now that was precious to Morgan and at the same time something she only was slowly able to adjust to. She figured that openly crediting Umberlee for her success against the pirates would have been something Schon still would have disliked, yet the genasi cleric eventually realized that by not pressing the matter, there was at least harmony. And although the general sentiment from Schon was still blasphemous and reckless, Morgan felt like she had proven the loyalty of her faith twice now and possibly earned the Journey enough complacent favour for the Queen of the Deep Sea to remain indifferent. Tribute had been paid, and although avoiding the Devil's Fin was more akin to a prank rather than a dominant resolution, to have braved the pirates' bows and outsmarted their human construct was at least a sign of Morgan's competency. And Umberlee only needed strong servants.

So while the partnership between crew and adventurers had been strengthened and the tension on deck had grown considerably lower, the introspective undine would still spend her time much the same as she had before. Just that she now also felt like the pack had shown first signs of knowing that it was pack. And so the secluded study of her musical instrument was less an exile from the company of the other light it might have been before, but rather simply the most favourable choice that Morgan could make between activities that were possible on such a voyage. But at least she would reconvene with the others to rest or sustain herself, and in these moments was it that she was far more at ease than at the beginning of this adventure. And one of those times she was sought out by Tolan, who gave her extra food and additional gratitude as he saw himself particularly saved by the feat that she had accomplished. Was this why he... had decided to hide in the rafters? But Morgan clearly recalled the promise that she had given Tolan before, and so his gratitude for her to look out for him had been greatly expected. For him to be thankful for it, after the genasi's deep green eyes regarded the small halfling for a few seconds she found a reply. "As long as I yet breathe... I will not stay hand or voice to prevent your death from happening... I... I'm glad you survived." And although Tolan's lack of confidence still worried the primordial woman, given how small and scrawny he was it seemed only appropriate that this was how things would be. And she felt closer to him too after establishing this bond as packmates.

As Morgan came to understand, escaping the pirates had led their trajectory onto a detour, but one that had them arrive at their destination just about as quickly as they had intended. And when it was attributed to something she had been able to do as the only one capable of it, it kept warming the cold of the deep sea that the water genasi felt inside of herself evermore. She was now certain that this would have to become the first composition, her first great feat in the West Marches. And although she still held herself back from composing the specifics, practicing with the holographic chimes as well as the closeness to the sea was what kept dragging her on deck during most passing moments. And so as well when they had already been reached by a storm during the night. At first Morgan was truly worried that Umberlee had rescinded any attempts to appeal to her that Morgan had made, but as much as it was a storm, the daughter of the waves realized it was not yet threatening to sink the ship. Because if it did, it would all be Morgan's failure.

Yet seeing as there were little signs of the Wavemother's direct involvement, the primordial tribeswoman settled down and instead simply experienced the weather. Because while Morgan's magical instrument would have not been disturbed by the storm in the least, the genasi simply loved the rain. It was water brought to land, the one thing that sired life and beauty on top of the earth, as well as its cool embrace welcomed any undine to remind them of home. There was no rain underneath the waves, yet it wasn't Morgan's religious affiliations that made her love the rain. And thus, Morgan simply sat in the rain and peered out at the roiling ocean which threatened to turn dangerous should the storm become much worse in its progression. That's when the primordial woman spied the boat keeling on top of the waves, a small vessel for those that could not breathe water and it even seemed to contain a single abandoned straggler inside. The healer and life cleric quickly conferred her observation to Captain Schon who stood at the helm. "Before us... Quickly, a life seems to have been embraced by the storm, yet I know not if it can withstand it." In her genuine worry for the life at stake, the usually soft-spoken Morgan showed more urgency as her feelings remained hidden on her blank face while raindrops pearled off of her blue, smooth, maritime skin. "Can your men... lend me their aid...? I feel... we should recover this life..."

At Morgan's report, Schon passes the wheel to her mate and rushes to the side. Holding her hat, she peers southward before turning to Morgan. "Good eye," she says. "Let's get a closer look." Then she returns to the helm and begins issuing orders to turn the Journey toward the little bobbing boat.

The hubbub regarding Morgan's find quickly makes its way below deck as well.

With the pirate menace gone, Gil settled into a shipboard routine of doing nothing much for long periods, something he had a natural talent for. He passed the time fishing off the stern, shooting the breeze with the pilot, dicing for coppers, trying to cadge grog off of the galley crew, and sometimes playing fiddle until pointedly asked to stop.

The weather got nasty as the Journey neared its destination and he'd turned his attention to intensively catching up on his sleep, but a bit of commotion was enough to pique his curiosity. He pulled up the hood of his cloak and headed above. "Huh, ya'd think a little skiff like that'd keep to land in a storm." The sorcerer peered at the bundle, but Perception 8couldn't make out much through the driving rain. "Yah, let's see if we can bring 'em in."

Morgan
right-aligned image

With Schon agreeing to turn the Journey closer to the boat, Gil came onto deck while Morgan was worriedly looking over the railing. The concern was only discernable by how she didn't even turn to greet the half-elven packmate, but she must have noticed that he had joined when she turned her voice loud enough to overcome the noise of the heavy rainfall. "They... would not be here... by choice..." The undine's webbed hands lightly grasped the railing as she turned her gaze lower to inspect the heavy swell of the waves. She wondered if she was strong enough to overcome these natural forces, not because she had any reason to fear drowning but because she was thinking to leap into the sea to pull the straggler from their boat and into the ocean. If Schon's men readied a rope similarly to the harness before they could pull the two of them up and it would fall to Morgan to have the strength to keep the rescuee's head above water. "I worry... their boat might spill... any moment now." The primordial finally looked away from the sea and peered into Gil's eyes with deep-green pupils of serenity. "Their life... I wish to recover it safely."

"They... would not be here... by choice..." Gil peered from under his hood. "Right about that, they must be desperate. Or stupid, could be stupid too. Ya can get to them okay, do ya think? Cap'n, is that rope still together?"

The tiny boat rolled on the waves, nearly obscured by sheets of rain, and Gil still couldn't see if the bundle was a person at all, much less alive or dead. "I worry... their boat might spill... any moment now. Their life... I wish to recover it safely." Gil felt, deep in his heart, that there was something fundamentally icky about sharing hats. You never knew but what someone else had lice or fleas or something. On the other hand, it was awfully hard to refuse Morgan's blank stare. He bit his lip, then fished around in his belt pouch and came up with an undistinguished gray knit cap. "'ere. If they're alive an' awake an' they come outta the boat, make 'em put this on an' tell 'em to say 'Help, I'm drowning' whenever they go under. It'll keep 'em alive. They gotta give it back though, it was bloody expensive." Ugh. He could wash it. Boil it maybe.

Tolan stepped out onto the deck of the ship. After looking around at the commotion going on all around him. The rogue spotted Morgan and Gill looking over the side. "How can I help?" Seeing the lifeboat floating in the water the halfling thought for a moment. "I wish I could swim out there with you."

Setting the Hook
left-aligned image

Morgan readies herself for another solo mission as the Journey sloshes through the wind-driven waves. She and Gil exchange proposals, shouting over the drum of the rain on the wooden deck and the howls and whistles of the wind blowing across and through the Journey’s riggings.

Suddenly, a scream cuts through the howling wind. A six foot-tall, piscine creature has speared a crew member on a crude trident. The creature’s shark-like jaws open wide, revealing row upon row of serrated teeth, which are poised to sink into the crew member’s neck.

The adventurers turn to face the threat, but they are not nearly quick enough. Three of the creatures immediately, inexplicably, swarm Gil, snapping at him, slashing with their claws, and stabbing with spears. He keeps his feet, but 19 total piercing and slashing damage, no Reactions because of surprisejust barely.

The shouting and sounds of combat rouse the crew remaining below deck.

OOCInitiative, of course. Beat/tie a
Dice Roll:
1d20+1 (20)+1 Total = 21
(21) to act immediately. Everyone was surprised the first round.

Four of the creatures have boarded. All have visible teeth and claws; three are greenish and armed with spears; two are reddish and armed with nets.

The crew will also fight. Rather than run a gigantic combat, I’m just assigning a portion of the enemy to the PCs, as you see in the status table. If you want to do something against a larger group of enemies – an AoE or something – let me know and I’ll tell you what’s possible, and I’ll give you an additional combat benefit if you’re successful.

Because I'm abstracting all the extra combatants, I’m also not using a map for this unless/until it becomes necessary. The deck isn’t very big, only about 40’x20’, with crew and enemies on deck, horizontal movement will be difficult. I’ll keep note of who’s engaged in the table. Let me know any questions you have to make the theater of the mind work; I should be able to answer quickly, and I’ll err on your side.
