Well, let's start, shall we?

I was thinking about making the "cave book" a small plot and try to get a book in-game, but I see we are bound to depart from the village very soon and I would be a rather useless mage without a book.

Fortunately, we are a few days after of the transformation, so it is perfectly reasonable that a clever guy like Neville would have managed to procure a book in three days.

I will consider so (unless Ysolde has anything against it, of course...)

On the equipment side, I don't think the former town drunk would have much, so I will be creative with purchases or abdicate from them entirely (which is, in fact, my first option for the moment).

Your in luck we don’t get starting equipment other than from our background so you don’t have to worry about making purchases.

I wouldn't worry too much. A proper book costs money, but technically a spell book can be anything that can store your spells. You could have a bunch of loose leaf paper bound in string to hold you over until you find something sturdier. It might not be incredibly practical, but there's already precedent for someone crafting a component pouch for themselves out of bits and bobs. You might want to consider that as well.
