OOCSorry about the wait, and Happy Thanksgiving!

A Fresh Gelch
left-aligned image
Before anyone even knocks, the party’s first question is answered; even through the door, they can hear a baby crying. Encouraged by a new event in this long case, Glanteth does then eagerly knock, but the heroes must wait nearly a minute for someone to noisily cross what they know to be a very small space. “Hold on, hold on, there!” comes Mr. Gelch’s voice, only a few seconds before the man opens the door.

Most of the party has met the man before. Durbin Gelch has never presented himself in a way that evidenced any vanity, but today he looks even more bedraggled than usual. His expression turns from anticipation to some small disappointment as he takes in the party at his door. “Oh,” he says. “I was expecting my – Sandra’s sister. She comes to help.” With the door open, the baby crying within is unpleasantly loud.

When Glanteth asks Mr. Gelch for a few minutes to talk, the man invites the party in, though he is understandably less welcome than in the past. A little crate with bedding, the baby within, sits in a corner. No one else is present. After a few moments of curious looks around the room, Mr. Gelch answers the unasked question. “Sandra…she didn’t make it,” he tells them, sadness tempered with resignation. “Just last week,” he elaborates. “But the boy is healthy, mercies,” he volunteers with a wan smile, before allowing the adventurers a closer look.

The baby in the crate does in fact appear fit, if presently discontent. Certainly his lungs are fully functional; at this distance the crying is oppressive. But now that the baby is in view, the wailing is only the second-most noticeable thing. Two small, bovine horns adorn his forehead, and when he wriggles a pointed tail becomes visible. Mr. Gelch breaks another awkward silence: “Looks like her, don’t you think?”

Rolen - Warlock (Hexblade) Male Half-Elf
AC 18+2 | HP: 36/36 | Init: +2 | Move: 30ft , PP 16, PI 9 | Status: normal |

Adv Charm, Immune Sleep, if Adv, re-roll lowest d20Elven Accuracy, Dim and Dark as normal, See through Magical DarknessDevil Sight, : 120ft | Spell Slots 1st(LR) 2/2, 3rd(SR) 2/2 For Target: Crit on 19 or 20, +3 damageHexblade Curse(SR) 1/1 | If you fail a saving throw or miss with an attack roll, you can roll 2d4 and add it to the total, possibly changing the outcome. Once you use this feature, you cant use it again until you finish a short or long rest. Favored of Gods 1/1 (SR)

Rolen followed the group down the street. He was not quite sure where all of this was going, but he was sure that the group would need either his persuasive ways or his Patron-provided weaponry and if it went like most adventures, it would likely be both. Then Rolen remembered the party at Lord Thomas's mansion and shuddered, "Perhaps I should befriend a Wizard. Never know when a spot of brains might be useful."

Rolen looked down at the child in the crude crib and thought, "I didn't see that coming. Although, book strange ritual, I guess I should have considered demons and devils." Rolen eyed Mr. Gelch speculatively, "Looks like his mother you say?"

Glanteth Thorinson
left-aligned image
Looking down at the "little devil" in its crib, Glanteth wonders once again why his Detect Evil and Good spell hadn't triggered a response when cast on the mother's womb. Maybe it's not inherently evil, he thought. A Tiefling?

"Any of you know how to calm a screaming baby?" the Norseman looks to each of his companions. "I've heard you're not supposed to shake them..." Turning back to Mr. Gelch, "We don't want to impose, just stopped by to check on you. I can't say how sorry we are to hear about your wife." Glanteth heads for the door somewhat frantically, the beginnings of a migraine already tightening the base of his skull.

Outside the hovel, the Norseman looks to his companions once again. "Do you think it's a Tiefling? If didn't set off my Detect Evil and Good spell when it was in the womb, but I don't believe a Tiefling sets it off either. I just don't understand what this cult has to gain by creating these babies. Anyways, I think we should go pay a visit to Brimley Walton. We've got the book and my sketches of the circle and "people controlling scars" to ask him about. If we see him first, we'll know what we have to reveal to Izim when we go ask him about the succubus. What do you say?" Again, he looks to each party member as he did when asking about calming a baby.

Honeysuckle
left-aligned image

Oh dear, this was bad. Something had very clearly happened to the baby. Honeysuckle was 100% certain it wasnt 100% human. He stared at the baby for a good long while, shifting sideways glances to his compatriots. For some reason the minotaur kept looking up as well.
With noone saying anything, he finally spoke up.
"Mr Gelch. I am sorry. I have bad news. Am sorry to say bad thing about Mrs. Gelch, but it is clear that she..." he looked nervously around the room. He was blushing, but then spoke to his feetl like he was ashasmed of existing. "...she had affair with minotaur. Am so sorry. Some minotaur so bad." he started to sob at the thought of the heartache Mr Gelch must be feeling. "But he will be ok. He has strong horns! He is strong calf, and will be gentle like uncle Honeysuckle, and you will love him. I no understand pointy long manhood. Maybe that human side. But it's long and strong!" he moved towards Mr.Glech and tried to put a reassuring had on his shoulder. "I help. Long experience raising calves. HS would like to attempt an Animal Handling (+4) check to stop the baby crying.I hold him?"

OOCHahaha! And I love the animal handling to calm the baby - I had already decided on that skill if anyone wanted to try it.

Mr. Gelch looks concerned, then aghast. "Is that - can that even work?" he asks. "I don't know...I know what people said, but I - I don't think I like that talk..." While Mr. Gelch consults his conscience and pride for decision on what to do with Honeysuckle, the minotaur picks up the baby, drapes him on his forearm lengthwise, as might the great running back Honeysuckle would have been...and rocks the baby to calm in no time. Mr. Gelch closes his mouth without saying anything more and just watches Honeysuckle quietly.

Rikke Skyhammer
right-aligned image
When Rikke finally got a chance to look at the Gelch baby, she wiped tears from her eyes and took her time looking over the motherless child, pausing only to wave back as it waved at her. ”Well, that is definitely a baby. Mostly human, which is good, I suppose.”

She didn’t know much about human or minotaur reproduction, certainly not enough to comment on whether the two might intersect, but she had her doubts. It didn’t seem any bigger than any other human babies she had seen, and given how big most minotaurs were she assumed their babies would be bigger. All she could do was shrug and pat Mr. Gelch on the arm, before giving the chubby baby a gentle poke on the tummy and heading outside to give the family some peace.

Glanteth’s talk of tieflings made more sense in Rikke’s mind when she thought about it, which she did quite a bit while standing outside the house. Mrs. Gelch had been subjected to lots of dark magic and scary demon stuff that could have affected the baby. Given that she had almost no idea what to do about any of this, whether demon summoning ritual book or mostly human baby, Rikke just shrugged when the viking looked her way, ”I suppose going to the wizard fellow is a good idea.”

"who good calf?" cooed Honeysuckle as he craddles the baby in his arms. "Uncle Honeysuckle lock horns with Mother's defiler. Yes he will, yes he will." he slide the baby carefully back into the father's arms and gently stroked his horns in farewell. "I bring milk when mission done." He bobbed his head in a bow and followed his companions out and onwards to the next stop.

right-aligned image

Not having met Mr and Mrs Gelch before, Torgrun didn't feel it was his place to question about the baby and obvious little knuckle of horns poking out of the baby's head. When Torgrun followed the others out, he said, "Aye, that was a cute little baby, whiny like all babies but a cute little fella. But them horns, so I take it that the Mrs wasn't a tieflin' or nothin' herself? Hopefully the baby wasn't tainted by some devil blood." Then he turned to Glanteth. "I suppose it's a good sign that yur warnin' senses didn't go off eh?"

Glanteth Thorinson
left-aligned image
"That was a good show in there, my friend!" Glanteth clapped the Minotaur on the shoulder. "I didn't know you had experience with babies." Turning to the druid, "well, despite its name, Detect Evil and Good only reveals creatures of a certain physical nature. It doesn't penetrate their hearts and minds to reveal their capacity for behavior. We can only hope that a nurturing environment will allow that baby to mature into someone admirable."

To everyone now, "I know that adding the extra stop seems excessive, but if Brimley can tell us anything, he might save us from revealing more than we'd need to Izim. Whether Brimley knows anything or not, I have no intentions of revealing my sketches of the scarring runes to Mr. Mustachio. At the same time, I worry about what he might charge us for directions to finding the succubus. Anyways, I suppose we should get over to The Inkpot and Quill to see if Brimley's about. I hope he still maintains a room there."

Once you use this feature, you cant use it again until you finish a short or long rest. Favored of Gods 1/1 (SR)

Rolen shook his head and quoted, "Evil is as evil does." and then an explanation, "I know not of Devils and Demons. There are two types of undead - those created or summoned by another and those choosing to try and cheat death. The former have no choice in their evil, while the latter chooses evil." Rolen shook his head, "Where was I, oh yes. Spell sense the type of creature, not the intent of the beast. So, Protection Good and Evil would not protect me from a Necromancer, while it would work against a zombie - a mindless undead who has no real intent to good or evil. Perhaps your spell of detection is similar."

To Glanteth, Rolen replied, "Each scene builds upon the next. We need to see this Mr. Mustachio fellow lead into the next scene. Or perhaps it is about character development. It shows that you all are in that twilight area - balanced betwixt light and darkness." The party does not know precisely where Rolen is going with all of this. Perhaps he is merely talking to hear himself talk.

Rolen wiggled his fingers in the air. "As to Brimley and Izim, I can be pretty persuasive when I ah, well, when I get to play a part."

OOCAgain, sorry. Real life calms down starting Wed. I wrote a longer post, assuming certain dialogue, but I didn't want to cheat you. I'll be able to move this conversation along quickly regardless of my distractions, though.

Glanteth leads the party to the Pot and Quill, where they have no trouble finding Brimley Walton. Does he ever leave? Those familiar with the wizard spot his good posture contrasted with his unwashed hair even though his back is turned to the door. He appears engaged in some transaction with a male elf. The two stand strangely close to each other while their hands exchange something. Then the elf quickly moves to the door, pulling a cloak tighter around him as he exits, though the day is warm. The elf does not look at the adventurers' eyes.

After a moment Walton puts something in his pocket and turns back to the room, where he immediately spots the party. He raises his eyebrows with a not-unfriendly curiosity as they approach. "Mr. Thorinson," he says, "and companions." His eyes linger a little longer on the newer party members. "You live," he observes. "And we have not been overrun by creatures from the lower planes. It seems I have lost a bet. You have some request of me, one assumes?"

"Brimley is a friend who's helped us in the past. He's also a competent wizard, so please don't employ anything charm-based, just your natural abilities at persuasion." The Norseman says to Rolend outside The Inkpot. Having placed his hand on the warlock's shoulder in a friendly manner as he'd spoken, "casts Guidance on RolendVeiledning", he says just before removing it. "I'll try and help grease the way for you by starting the conversation, and then leave it to you. We're hoping to get his insight on the book we found, as well as my two sketches." Glanteth finishes with a reminder.

"Arch-Mage Walton," Glanteth replies with a smile after being addressed. "You look as though you're doing well. We've come across a few things in our recent travels and I didn't want to deny you first peek, considering your keen interest in such arcane curiosities. Would you care to join us at a table?"

In fact, there is a table only feet away. Walton silently steps over and takes a seat facing out into the room, toward the party, and waits expectantly.

This was the first time meeting Brimley for Torgrun so he just nodded his head to the wizard in a friendly manner and waited for the more charismatic members of the group to discuss the matters at hand. But he did try to get a perception check to get a look at the elf as he passes bycloser look at the exiting elf as he passed the group on his way out.
