Glanteth, Son of Thorin, Cleric of Thor
left-aligned image
"Well, this is the first thing," Glanteth produces the book after everyone seats themselves. "Oh, and I believe this might be connected with it," he produces his sketch of the magic circle. "None of us have ever seen a magical ritual detailed in such layman's terms. Even though we could likely perform it ourselves, the book remains cryptic about what the ritual is actually meant to do." Lastly, the Norseman produces his sketch of the scarring runes, but sets it aside on the table to give the wizard some time with the book.

Visiting Scholar
left-aligned image
The scholar flips through the pages quickly, one corner of his mouth curling into the hint of a very rare smile. "Very practical," he says. "If you have trouble following these instructions, I am afraid that you are beyond my help.

"As for what it does,"
Walton continues, "it is a summoning ritual. I cannot tell you from this quick review what is to be summoned. I should add..." Walton squints at a couple of the pages "...It is possible that the ritual 'summons' the caster to a different location. You see this here?" he asks rhetorically, pointing at a section. Walton pauses, and detects no comprehension from the adventurers. "Well," he concludes, "there it is, to the extent of my understanding, based on this initial read."

Walton looks at Glanteth's sketch and furrows his brow. "This," he says, "I believe, is a very poor representation of this." Walton taps his finger on a similar drawing in the book, which the reader is instructed to inscribe as part of the ritual.

Rikke Skyhammer
right-aligned image
Having climbed up into one of the chairs at the table and looking down at the book while Brimley talks, Rikke seems shaken by his words, or by whatever she thinks he means by his words. In truth, the simple, young dwarf has it mostly right in her head, and she doesn’t like any of it. Summons the caster had a particularly ominous ring to the ranger.

”So it would take us someplace instead of bringing something here?” she asked before her thoughts sidetracked her. ”Like, if a person can summon a demon and be possessed by a demon, could a demon summon a person and could that person get free and possess a demon? And then would they have to call a dwarf exorcist to banish that someone back to here because they were causing all kinds of trouble?” Rikke rambled on for a moment, lost in her tangent which was more comical than what had raised her initial concerns. After a long pause, she got back to the important questions, ”Where would it take us? Not, you know,” she slowed to not-so-subtly extend her index finger to point down at the ground, before continuing on in a near whisper, ”the abyss.”

Honeysuckle

Honeysuckle stood back and let the learned folk discuss the picture book. As the words came towards him, we grabbed at a few and mulled them over.
Layman's term...who that?
Beyond my help...I guess we should go then...oh he's still talking...
'summons' the caster to a different location....prfff, summon means come. different location come us. Smart. prfff
person get free and possess a demon?...That sound fun.Big surprise for demon
After a few back and forths and internal discussions with himself, Honeysuckle slowly grasped the idea that was being thrown around, but still came to the same conclusion...going to the Abyss and messing up demons would be fun.

Walton silently regards Rikke for some time, just a hint of concern in his eyes. When he finally speaks, he is brief: "I do not know to where the caster would travel; as I say, I am not sure which way the travel is to occur...or if it is only a one-way route."

Walton pauses for a moment, his fingers in a steeple position against his lips, as he looks at the ceiling. "Perhaps Elurik has something to say on the matter," he wonders. Then he looks back at the adventurers impatiently when he notices a couple looking around at the other patrons. "I refer to the tome," he informs them. "Elurik's Accessing the Planes. Its author is quite long dead and, I assure you, not in the room. Unfortunately, I have not seen a copy in years."

"I think I know who has book" chimed in Honeysuckle. He put a finger under his nose and gave his party a wink."Walton, you know Izim? Can trust? Please don't use metaphor "I trust him as far as I can throw him" Honeysuckle can throw far."

right-aligned image

"Aye, ya think this Izim has the book, HS? We should definitely visit him next," said Torgrun to HS. Then turning to Walton, "In case we come up short at the Izzy fella, any idea where we might find a copy of that Planes book? Knowin how this here summin spell works will be quite important for our case, and our wellbein," said the dwarf druid in a grave tone.

Glanteth, Son of Thorin, Cleric of Thor
left-aligned image
Glanteth looks around the table, frowning a little before turning back to Brimley. "I don't see any special reason to assume Izim has this Elurik's Accessing the Planes tome. Would you have any suspicions on where we might look for it? Possibly a temple or library here in Westhaven?" The Norseman starts as he suddenly recalls something. "I also wanted to ask you about this," producing his last sketch and sliding it to Brimley. "This is a depiction of flesh-scarring that has been present on several of our foes during the course of our investigation. These foes were never the enemies we've sought, but were somehow twisted by this rune-scar into serving those enemies. I'm just wondering if you recognize the runic configuration, or could be able to say how this might be possible."

While the wizard looks over the sketch, Glanteth turns to the others. "The only reason we had to visit Izim was to try and find out how to reach this Ignisora succubus and I didn't really appreciate his price for the last bit of information we sought from him. The ritual in this book sounds like the answer to that question already, although I don't especially like the idea of stepping through a portal who's destination is unknown. Still, it might end up being our best option if we're unable to locate this Accessing the Panes tome. What do you guys think?"

Just the 2 questions for Brimley and 1 for everyone else. Edit: If most everyone else wants to see Izim anyways (I guess just to see if he happens to have the book) then Glanteth will go along with it. I can't personally see any reason to assume he has it, though. Being a procurer/dealer of rare objects, I can still see how he might be a lead - but (as previously stated) I didn't care too much for his price for the simplest bit of info the last time. I have a kind-of-feeling that all the book will tell us is something like: Gehenna. Not even sure how that will help us. If I'm not mistaken, we've all done our best with our current character builds to combat fiends, so I'm not sure how valuable that specific info will even be.

"As I say," Walton says, "I have not seen a copy in years - before I came to this land, to be more specific. From my survey of the scholarship in this community, I am skeptical that one resides nearby." Walton looks around the What the heck is the name of this place again?Inkpot and sighs.

He brightens at Glanteth's additional sketches and their history. "That is interesting," he says, clearly sincerely. "I am unfamiliar with these runes, and with this specific technique, but many charms and controls depend upon body parts as their material. A lock of hair, for example," explains Walton when he notices his audience's confusion. "For a lasting, powerful enchantment, this caster may have found it necessary to execute this more invasive modification." Walton looks at the drawings again. "Very painful, one assumes...and I suspect irreversible without the employment of equally brutal measures."

"Ah well, thank you Mr. Walton. Your knowledge has proven invaluable once again. I imagine in the same way you can't discern the destination location of the circle, you're probably unable to identify the specific rune in the charm that ties charmed to the specific charmer?" Glanteth worded the question like a statement, but raised the pitch of his voice at the end inquiringly. "I'm just wondering if that same rune might have been integrated in the circle as well, making the summoning destination a person rather than a place."

Glanteth's recent experience at scribing scrolls and researching extraplanar beings seemed to have given him a bit more insight into the nature of magic, although certainly not at the scholarly level of Brimley. In fact, even his better use of the common tongue so he didn't sound like an uneducated bumpkin whilst conversing with the Diviner was beginning to give him a headache. The Norseman was almost anxious to be on his way so that he could dangle his participle wherever the hells he wanted to.

Rikke Skyhammer

Sitting in the Inkpot and Quill, Rikke is somewhat disheartened by the talk of another book, knowing that it was rare enough to find one book she could understand. Sure, she could read most of the languages that books were written in, but anything that was so difficult to remember that it warranted writing down was probably also too difficult to figure out when she was reading it. Letters and maps were much more to her liking, but it seemed unlikely they were going to find some personal correspondence that broke the case wide open.

”I know he wasn’t very helpful, buddy, but Izim is the only person who seems to know about this demon lady,” she says to Glanteth, not liking anything she’s saying. ”Now that we dealt with Hip-hop, maybe he’ll be more amena… mena… likely to be helpful?”

Rolen - Warlock (Hexblade) Male Half-Elf
AC 18+2 | HP: 36/36 | Init: +2 | Move: 30ft , PP 16, PI 9 | Status: normal |

Adv Charm, Immune Sleep, if Adv, re-roll lowest d20Elven Accuracy, Dim and Dark as normal, See through Magical DarknessDevil Sight, : 120ft | Spell Slots 1st(LR) 2/2, 3rd(SR) 2/2 For Target: Crit on 19 or 20, +3 damageHexblade Curse(SR) 1/1 | If you fail a saving throw or miss with an attack roll, you can roll 2d4 and add it to the total, possibly changing the outcome. Once you use this feature, you cant use it again until you finish a short or long rest. Favored of Gods 1/1 (SR)

Rolen spoke reassuringly, making it sound like he knew what was going on. However, anyone following the content of the Shadow Knight's soliloquy knew that he had not a clue.

"Well, summoning is bringing a denizen of another plane to you, while Banishing is sending them back. I got sent to Shadowfell once, and I didn't like the trip one little bit. Of course, the idiot artist who sent me liked my return even less." Rolen smiled.

"Now, this ritual you are talking about, opening up a portal to somewhere else. That sounds more like transportation. It could be a bit dicey depending on where we are going and how to get back."

"These runes carved into bodies sound like something else altogether. Charms and Suggestions last for a limited time, while things like Geas can run for a long time and do not require concentration. Nasty stuff."

"Now you say that we are off to try and find this Izim character - a dubious mercenary - to get the information to track down a Demon. I must say, I thought this Undead slaying business was tricky. It sounds like this whole Demon thing brings it to a new level of complexity."

In response to Glanteth' s comment about the runes, Walton looks up again and cocks his head at the Viking as if noticing something strange. "That is not a foolish though," he remarks. "I believe you may be sober today, Mr. Thorinson."

Walton takes another look at the drawing in the book and Glanteth's own work. "You drew these?" he confirms. "I believe you may be the best judge of whether any similarities exist." Walton hands them back to Glanteth, who compares them. The cleric isn't absolutely certain, but yes - two of the many figures in drawing in the book resemble those he sought to copy from the scarification.

Walton nods when Glanteth reports this finding. "Mm," he says. "It appears you have substantial confirmation that your these events are traceable to the same individual or organization. Well done."

Honeysuckle was a bit confused with all this talk about rituals and what sounded like teleporting a demon into someone. "I think if Mr. Walton not know if book is nearby, then if one is near nearby, then it probably hidden. And person who likes special things and hiding things is Izim. Even if he has price, not mean we have to pay it. But at least we know snd then make plan..."Honeysuckle recalculate everything he just said actually made sense to him, and the simply added.."Yes" with a definite nod.
