When the Halfling displayed his desire for Blood, it raised Rolen's hackles. After all, the Warlock hunted the Undead, both at the command of his Paetron, and for his own personal vengeance. However, Rolen stayed his hand, "We have made an alliance with Izim and he is Izim's minion. Besides, my companions and I seem to have our hands full with Ingnisora."

Rolen's upbringing had been more 16 Wis vs. 9 Intpragmatic than academic. He traveled from town to town putting on plays. However, Rolen's had spent time - far too much time - in Shadowfell, being hunted by and then hunting with his Patreon. It had honed his native c

Together they had faced all kinds of enemies and challenges, and she was certain they could overcome anything that came at them. The new guy made a good point, and so did Honeysuckle, and so did her own head, which she felt better about not that others were in agreement with it. ”I think going… down there… would be too scary for me, maybe even for Baern. Maybe we could go outside the town somewhere safe, so no one else gets hurt, and then do all of our heroing?”

Given that little time, I can help you create the ritual that you prefer; recording it for you, in a useful and safe form, is another matter entirely. You, Mr. Thorinson, may confidently work security at some tavern, but I imagine that you find it an entirely different task to draft comprehensive instructions regarding the manner in which to artfully punt a drunken sailor. (I am assuming here that you can write at all.) No, that would take me several hours at least. If your possession of the book is so limited, I recommend that we begin immediately.”

When Glanteth offers payment of a kind, Walton seems to regard him with new eyes. The wizard’s features soften very slightly. “It seems that you are in fact rather honorable,” he observes. “Your offer is not unappreciated, limited as your skills in assessing value may be. As I have told you, my interests trend more to the academic. If you intend to visit the hells, and you somehow return, I would be very interested in your detailed report. And yes, I may be interested in whatever…salvage you may obtain as well, if not for me, then perhaps for one of my colleagues.” Walton pauses. “Thank you,” he concludes.

Rolen: "We can bring whoever or whatever is on the other end of the ritual to a location and at a time of our choosing."

“Ah,” cautions Walton. “I may have been unclear. Yes, I can help you control the direction of the transfer, but the route remains to a location, not an individual, and even with this rather pedantic instruction book, I cannot help you forcefully summon a particular being; that is very powerful, delicate magic.”

After hearing Rikke’s concerns, Walton reminds the party, “You have an option other than the hells. The other location is on this plane. Do you have reason to believe that either destination is more promising?”

I'd prefer to exhaust the prime material alternative first, if possible."

We can go and inform Izim of the delay while you're working on it. As long as we follow through, I don't believe he'll take it as a pact-breaker, especially with us keeping him in the loop the moment something changed on our end."

When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, you can target one additional creature for each slot level above 4th.Banishment,4rd Level Transmutation - Casting Time: 1 action, Range: 300ft, Components: V,S,M, Duration: 10 minutes concentration - Until the spell ends, you control any freestanding water inside an area you choose that is a cube up to 100 feet on a side. You can choose from any of the following effects when you cast this spell. As an action on your turn, you can repeat the same effect or choose a different one.

Flood. You cause the water level of all standing water in the area to rise by as much as 20 feet. If the area includes a shore, the flooding water spills over onto dry land. If you choose an area in a large body of water, you instead create a 20-foot tall wave that travels from one side of the area to the other and then crashes down. Any Huge or smaller vehicles in the wave's path are carried with it to the other side. Any Huge or smaller vehicles struck by the wave have a 25 percent chance of capsizing. The water level remains elevated until the spell ends or you choose a different effect. If this effect produced a wave, the wave repeats on the start of your next turn while the flood effect lasts.

Part Water. You cause water in the area to move apart and create a trench. The trench extends across the spell's area, and the separated water forms a wall to either side. The trench remains until the spell ends or you choose a different effect. The water then slowly fills in the trench over the course of the next round until the normal water level is restored.

Redirect Flow. You cause flowing water in the area to move in a direction you choose, even if the water has to flow over obstacles, up walls, or in other unlikely directions. The water in the area moves as you direct it, but once it moves beyond the spell's area, it resumes its flow based on the terrain conditions. The water continues to move in the direction you chose until the spell ends or you choose a different effect.

Whirlpool. This effect requires a body of water at least 50 feet square and 25 feet deep. You cause a whirlpool to form in the center of the area. The whirlpool forms a vortex that is 5 feet wide at the base, up to 50 feet wide at the top, and 25 feet tall. Any creature or object in the water and within 25 feet of the vortex is pulled 10 feet toward it. A creature can swim away from the vortex by making a Strength (Athletics) check against your spell save DC. When a creature enters the vortex for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there, it must make a Strength saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 2d8 bludgeoning damage and is caught in the vortex until the spell ends. On a successful save, the creature takes half damage, and isn't caught in the vortex. A creature caught in the vortex can use its action to try to swim away from the vortex as described above, but has disadvantage on the Strength (Athletics) check to do so. The first time each turn that an object enters the vortex, the object takes 2d8 bludgeoning damage; this damage occurs each round it remains in the vortex.Control Water, 4th Level Divination - Casting Time: 1 action (or ritual), Range: self, Components: V,S,M (incense and a sacrificial offering appropriate to your religion, together worth at least 25 gp, which the spell consumes), Duration: Instantaneous - Your magic and an offering put you in contact with a god or a god's servants. You ask a single question concerning a specific goal, event, or activity to occur within 7 days. The GM offers a truthful reply. The reply might be a short phrase, a cryptic rhyme, or an omen. The spell doesn't take into account any possible circumstances that might change the outcome, such as the casting of additional spells or the loss or gain of a companion. If you cast the spell two or more times before finishing your next long rest, there is a cumulative 25 percent chance for each casting after the first that you get a random reading. I will tell you what to copy and bring with you from this book as I begin the preparations for the first leg." Walton begins to collect the materials. "We will do this in my room upstairs," he informs the others. "Now you must tell me when you wish me to perform the return ritual."

”How long does it take to kill a succubus?” Rikke asked as she looked at her companions in response to Walton’s question. Most of the conversation was going right over her head, which was very understandable since she was quite short, even for a dwarf. The question of how they got home, though, was of particular interest to Rikke. ”Or, ‘subdue’ a succubus,” she clarified with air quotes large enough to imply something unintentionally sinister and entirely out of keeping with her cheery demeanour.

”We can always walk back, if we’re on this… plane. I can even lead the way,” she said, trying out a new word and hoping she got it right as she waved her hands around in flat circles to gesture to where they now stood. ”Hip-hop was pretty wily, but once we got him, we got him pretty quick, aside from all the smoke and screaming and dying and stuff. I would help with the writing and stuff, but my writing is pretty messy, even though I know lots of languages, so I probably shouldn't.”

He now moves with surprising purpose and alacrity for an academic as he lays out the written materials in a convenient place and begins inscribing on his floor with chalk and ash, frequently flipping through the borrowed book as he does. "Start here," he says simply, pointing to one of the diagrams in the manual recovered from the island. "You will need that, but I have some changes to note. Whom am I instructing?"

Torgrun followed Walton along with the others upstairs. Walton began inscribing diagrams into the floor with chalk and ash as he referred to the book. When he asked the party whom he should instruct for performing the ritual, Torgrun looked to the others and said, "Aye, me thinks I can do her. I ain't the brightest at this kinda thing but I had a knack for the books when me Pappy used ta teach us the lore and history of the nature around our neck a the woods. And any help from yas would be appreciated." Looking over to Rolan, Torgrun added, "Aye, maybe that helmet ya got there, the one that helps ya understand different languages may help me read the dang book ta help me do this right."

Honeysuckle

Honeysuckle wasn't one for books, although he was getting the knack of writing, and he could draw a pretty cool pointed S that curved into itself nicely.
So he stood in the back and tried to find another means to be useful. He pulled the driftglobe out of his pack and set it to float above the ritual area. "I can make bright like daylight if you need." he added, hoping that his usefulbess would be recognised.

When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, you can target one additional creature for each slot level above 4th.Banishment,4rd Level Transmutation - Casting Time: 1 action, Range: 300ft, Components: V,S,M, Duration: 10 minutes concentration - Until the spell ends, you control any freestanding water inside an area you choose that is a cube up to 100 feet on a side. You can choose from any of the following effects when you cast this spell. As an action on your turn, you can repeat the same effect or choose a different one.

Flood. You cause the water level of all standing water in the area to rise by as much as 20 feet. If the area includes a shore, the flooding water spills over onto dry land. If you choose an area in a large body of water, you instead create a 20-foot tall wave that travels from one side of the area to the other and then crashes down. Any Huge or smaller vehicles in the wave's path are carried with it to the other side. Any Huge or smaller vehicles struck by the wave have a 25 percent chance of capsizing. The water level remains elevated until the spell ends or you choose a different effect. If this effect produced a wave, the wave repeats on the start of your next turn while the flood effect lasts.

Part Water. You cause water in the area to move apart and create a trench. The trench extends across the spell's area, and the separated water forms a wall to either side. The trench remains until the spell ends or you choose a different effect. The water then slowly fills in the trench over the course of the next round until the normal water level is restored.

Redirect Flow. You cause flowing water in the area to move in a direction you choose, even if the water has to flow over obstacles, up walls, or in other unlikely directions. The water in the area moves as you direct it, but once it moves beyond the spell's area, it resumes its flow based on the terrain conditions. The water continues to move in the direction you chose until the spell ends or you choose a different effect.

Whirlpool. This effect requires a body of water at least 50 feet square and 25 feet deep. You cause a whirlpool to form in the center of the area. The whirlpool forms a vortex that is 5 feet wide at the base, up to 50 feet wide at the top, and 25 feet tall. Any creature or object in the water and within 25 feet of the vortex is pulled 10 feet toward it. A creature can swim away from the vortex by making a Strength (Athletics) check against your spell save DC. When a creature enters the vortex for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there, it must make a Strength saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 2d8 bludgeoning damage and is caught in the vortex until the spell ends. On a successful save, the creature takes half damage, and isn't caught in the vortex. A creature caught in the vortex can use its action to try to swim away from the vortex as described above, but has disadvantage on the Strength (Athletics) check to do so. The first time each turn that an object enters the vortex, the object takes 2d8 bludgeoning damage; this damage occurs each round it remains in the vortex.Control Water, 4th Level Divination - Casting Time: 1 action (or ritual), Range: self, Components: V,S,M (incense and a sacrificial offering appropriate to your religion, together worth at least 25 gp, which the spell consumes), Duration: Instantaneous - Your magic and an offering put you in contact with a god or a god's servants. You ask a single question concerning a specific goal, event, or activity to occur within 7 days. The GM offers a truthful reply. The reply might be a short phrase, a cryptic rhyme, or an omen. The spell doesn't take into account any possible circumstances that might change the outcome, such as the casting of additional spells or the loss or gain of a companion. If you cast the spell two or more times before finishing your next long rest, there is a cumulative 25 percent chance for each casting after the first that you get a random reading. The GM makes this roll in secret.Divination, 4rd Level Evocation - Casting Time: 1 action, Range: 300ft (20ft radius cylinder), Components: V,S,M, Duration: Instantaneous - A hail of rock-hard ice pounds to the ground in a 20-foot-radius, 40-foot-high cylinder centered on a point within range. Each creature in the cylinder must make a Dexterity saving throw. A creature takes 2d8 bludgeoning damage and 4d6 cold damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. Hailstones turn the storm's area of effect into difficult terrain until the end of your next turn. At Higher Levels. Quite certain her help was not needed with the writing and the learning, what with Torgrun and all the tall folk already on it, Rikke found a nice quiet spot out of the way from which to sit, and observe. And maybe fiddle with some stuff that was just lying about on the table nearby, but only a little bit until she got a cross look from Walton and went back to sitting quietly.
