Percy, Wandering
right-aligned image

Percy rolled over onto the ledge with a sigh of relief. Allowing his complaining muscles to quiet a moment before gathering himself. Chuckling and clapping softly as his companion quickly crossed the rope after him. " Not at all! I appreciate your help. " Nodding with a smile as he turned and strode to the chest before flipping its top open.

" I suppose it makes sense, I only the hope the gold is good outside of here! " Percy gave his companion a wink as he took the gold and potion into his pack, making a mental note to remember to give Galen his share as soon as the elf had his coin purse. Percy was relieved he hadn't gotten a room and set himself up yet. Carrying around this pack had come in handy so far. " Eh we say that now, but next time it'll drop us into the sea! Last thing you need then is a heavy pack..." The monk did his best to console his temporarily unprepared companion.

Walking towards the newly appearing door Percy motioned to it with a flourish. " Shall we? " Reaching out he would wrap his hand about the handle before opening it once more. It seemed they were being returned to the tavern. " Ah Galen! Seems like you can go get your coin purse before the next un. " Stepping through the portal way and holding the door open for his new friend to join.

OOC
The wonders of a magical world mean that the characters arrive at the same place at the same time, and are un-inebriated (at least this time).

META Comment: Hm having characters come through the Door with different conditions (e.g., Drunk, Exhausted, Starving). Also, splitting up groups of characters. There are a couple of options to be added to the list of things the Door can do.

And a couple of warnings. This encounter is likely to be a 'deadly' combat encounter. Make sure you are familiar with the Death Saving Throw and Massive Damage rules. Also, familiarize yourself with the swimming/underwater combat rules.

The original two adventurers had been joined by several other new adventurers. In fact, the On-Your-Shield had even set aside a table reserved for those waiting to enter the door with the cute little sign > The table reserved for those sucidal stupid enough to walk through the magical Door. The group trickles through the door in ones and twos, but they all seem to arrive at the same time, in the same location.

In this case, the location is a small boat in the middle of a vast expanse of water. There is no land in sight. Additionally, the boat has no sail or oars. It does appear to have a few slow leaks, as the bottom is beginning to fill with water. In the distance, a fin appears above the water, before disappearing.

Teema
right-aligned image

There really hadn't been any good reason why Teema had swung through that door. The doorway had stood in the middle of the room, it looked pointless, and when it opened surprisingly she used the opportunity to occupy herself a little. There had been that warm fuzzy feeling settling in after Snap Kick had bestowed her with the burgundy red beverage for having been appreciative of his performance, but just as the petite harpy had started to enjoy the mood inside the Inn on Your Shield, the entire room and the other adventurers inside it disappeared from her eyes as she suddenly found herself in an utterly unfamiliar position, on a sinking boat right in the middle of the sea. And much more than Teema was able to understand in that moment, this teleportation was quite the sobering experience. "Huh??!" The blood harpy spun around with her back against the railing as she had been so abruptly displaced and now there were several people right beside her that she had never seen before. With a pitiable, high-pitched shriek, she spread her snow-white wings and with an ugly scraping sound as her claws pushed off the wood she catapulted herself into the air with as much power as there was behind those thighs and slender legs.

It was obvious based on Teema's expression that she was visibly upset to have ended up in this situation and her lucent eyes were widened far as she basically tried to escape these people that had perfectly snuck up on her. With more distance between her and the boat, the entire plight of her current predicament was made even further aware to her as there was no land in sight in any direction and she even spotted that there was some big-looking creature right there in the water beneath her. Nuh-uh! What? Where am I, what's happening?! Maybe Teema would be able to get those answers from the only people that were around, whom she just now had darted away from as far as she could, but for the initial moment of shock she certainly hadn't arrived at that much reasoning yet. The little harpy had never understood that the door which she had passed through had indeed been put into the inn rather purposefully and now the adventure which she had been seeking had found her much more quickly than even a whimsical being as she could have fathomed.

Hex
right-aligned image
(Click for Sheet) @James Zapata

Having finished the last bits of his tentacle salad, Hex rose from the reserved table and dusted his pale hands on the deep purple leather trousers he wore.

"This door, then?" He asked. The half-drow's voice still rasped like a metal file over rusted pipes, but it was definitely louder now; fuller. More his own.

Not waiting for a response, Hex shrugged his broad shoulders, turned the knob, then pushed the door open.

"We're on a... boat?"

It took him a moment to get his bearings. Hex liked the water well enough, but he was very much opposed to drowning. This would be a good time to have a potion of water breathing, he thought with a sigh.

"Don't suppose any of you can sail this boat to shore, hmmm?"

Hex shielded his eyes and looked up at the shrieking harpy above. He was about to blast it with eldritch power until he noticed that she seemed just as disoriented as he was at the moment.

"From Westhaven too, I presume? Charmed, I'm sure. My name's Hex. I'm waving at you, see?"

Hex waved at the sky, his grin plastered on a purply-pale, sharply-angled face. He then waved at his companions in this sinking and decidedly un-life boat. "Today's a good day to die, wouldn't you say? Call me Hex."

The unhinged sorcerer then surveyed the expanse of water. He raised a thin eyebrow at the protruding fin in the water. Hex wasn't very familiar with marine fauna, but this had the look of a predator. He then eyed the leaks in the boat.

"Hm. I wonder..."

Concentrating on a spot where the water was seeping into the vessel, Hex manifested frost to try and solidify at least a few holes with ice.

Girgadan Enters!

Girgadan
For some reason this reminded Girgadan of his first hazing when he had joined up with the clans troops. Hopefully less traumatic, Orcs, Half-Orcs and initiations of Grummsh were not lilely to be found behind this door.

Imagining the voice of his favourite captain... Charge! - fortune favours the brave and those first get the best loot thought the Half-Orc as those pithy sayings have never been wrong!

Girgadan rushed through the door and was pleasantly surprised to find he had just rushed onto an occupied boat and tripped over the side into what appeared to be an endless ocean.

His attempt to say Hi and Sorry at the same time as trying to breath water did not work well "Slorggle, glug, Hirgh"as he made to grab the side of the boat.

Galen nodded at Percy giving him a smile as the monk opened the new door. So far he was pleasant and competent which were two things the elf greatly appreciated in an adventuring partner. They were two basic things that often got over looked when recruiting for an outing beyond Westhaven. Sure skills and experience were needed but being competent and knowing when it was your turn to shine and turning it off were necessary too. And being a pleasant human being was also good. No one wanted to repeat an outing with someone who was argumentative and combative about the simplest decisions. So far Percy was in that category of being on Galen’s recall list of people to consider on an adventure or job outside Westhaven in the future.

The shock of going through the door was just as jarring the second time as it was the first. It felt like an eternity and just a second or two at the same time. The elf thought he was floating in the air one moment and then stumbling over feet and wood planks the next.

The light was bright, and nearly blinded the Ranger as his eyes took some time to adjust to the sudden sunlight above and glinting water below. Galen shielded his face as he felt a wing beat him as screeching scream ringed in his ears. Sitting up the elf found himself in a small wooden boat with Percy, a purple skinned Drow and what appeared to be a half-orc going over the opposite side of the boat.

Launching to his feet the Ranger went after the yet-unnamed person going into the water, “I got him,” Galen shouted setting the boat rocking.

He didn’t have time to be polite at the moment as the feet disappeared from sight. He did feel a chill inside the boat as well as his boots getting damp.

Percy, Wandering
right-aligned image

Stepping through the doorway Percy was treated to yet another of the rooms tricks. A whirling of color as if he turned to fast and the scene had changed in just a moment. The doorway clicked behind him and a cacophony of sound erupted around him. Not the least of which a shrieking harpy. But also many boots, the lapping of water on the ships side and the puddling of spurting water.

Turning Percy regarded Galen but also several new folks, one of which still mid charge from their end of the door and ending up off the far side of the boat. The monk offered a smile and chuckle as he bowed openly to his new friends. " More inquisitive souls eh? So good to be here with you. I am Percy. " Afterwards stopping for a moment before trying to work out a friendly greeting to their circling feathered friend. He settled on copying Hex, and waved a long open arm in greeting.

Taking in his surroundings Percy felt his heart sink a bit. Hailing from a far island; he once traveled on a long voyage with a ship to the mainlands. The sea was terrifying in its expanse. Treacherous as it always seemed to bare empty hands but hid vicious tricks along every turn. Such trick was already on its way towards them, and another was slowly seeping into the bottom of their vessel. Galen seemed to be on his way to help their swimming companion, so instead Percy focused on the leaks.

Doing his best to keep a level head he quickly returned to his helpful backpack for solutions. He found little in ways of boat repair; and instead chose his own clothes to take the fall. Tearing a few strips from his cloak he would seek to try and stop up the leaks in the bottom of the boat. Chuckling as he stooped down on his hands and knees to find small cracks. " Anyone know a sea shanty? "

Girgdan's plunge into the water appeared to have set everything in motion. The shark moved towards Girdan, attempting to consume the semi-naked barbarian. Additionally, a pair of shark-like humanoids appeared out of the water, attempting to attack Percy and Hex.

Teema is, fortunately, out of range of these aquatic attackers.

Girgadan
Feeling very wet and a little foolish Girgadan makes to climb back into the boat. Once on board its time to beat that shark senseless...

"I'm gonna smack this shark senseless. Come to Girga-doom you high speed piece of sushi!"

Holding onto the boat as best as possible Girgadan starts 'clubbing' the Reef shark as best he can to knock it unconscious.

"When this fish goes to sleep we're going to need something to keep it with the boat" shouts out the Barbarian to anyone that might be in a position to help.

Teema
right-aligned image

There were no two ways about it. Teema had escaped all of these strange men that had suddenly surrounded her, yet on all accounts that hadn't helped her much because she was veritably lost at sea. Her head snapped left, then right, but still there was nary of land in sight, and even as one who had an optimistic spirit the little harpy didn't believe for even a moment that she would be able to fly past the horizon without falling exhaustedly into the ocean before she found somewhere to land. Her widened eyes fell back onto the couple of large men that were starting to scramble in and out of the boat beneath her, and as Teema was still finding her bearings with this abandonment situation, the avian woman suddenly heard a voice that was talking right into her head. She shrieked once more for good measure, but when she listened she realized that it was actual dialog transmitted to her and after two, three seconds she managed to reconstitute what had been telepathically said to her. And just like the greeting had promised, when the blood harpy peered down below she saw one and then two males looking up to her and waving with seemingly friendly intentions. ~I'm Teema!~ The harpy tried to respond with her mind just like she had been approached, but more than the thoughts which she transmitted to Hex, she was still somewhat frightened by the abrupt displacement that had even brought her here. Does he know what's going on? From Westhaven too? Why can he speak right into my head like that?!

With a bit more time there would have been a great likelihood that Teema would have explored her telepathic connection with this Hex more thoroughly and the questions that had popped into her head were surely meant to be verbalized just as soon. But before more of a dialog could happen or before Teema could have gotten curious enough to fly back down to talk with these men who had spooked her so unfairly, dark shadows began to emerge from the ocean's surface surrounding the boat and the blood harpy watched with attentive nervousness how suddenly sharp-toothed beings burst from the saltwater and appeared to be lunging for the sparse crew that Teema had never gotten the chance to learn more about. Oh gosh! They're about to be eaten! That didn't bode well considering that it had appeared that these people were her lifeline to the place she had been spirited away from. But equally pressing to Teema was that this would be the first time that she would see anybody eaten by a shark or really the first time she ever had seen someone thoroughly murdered to death. Her primal instincts told her that she wouldn't feel the need to shy away from this violence, but that didn't change the fact it was the young female's first time actually witnessing this kind of bloodshed, even if nothing had even happened yet. It made her freeze up as she kept her height, feeling very relieved that she hadn't spotted any sky sharks as well. If that even was a thing in the West Marches, which it probably was. I... I should help them!

The small boat was far too precarious as Galen backed off helping Girgaden back into the boat, the half-orc doing it himself. The curved floor of the hull rocked as the fourth man settled himself leaning over the side bashing at the shark in the water. It was unsettling having the ground move so much under his feet. The Ranger did not like being out on the water right now; at least in such a tiny boat that was being attacked and sinking at the same time.

The boat tipped the other direction as two more figures appeared in the water reaching up towards Percy and Hex. They were sharp-toothed and looked like they were ready to shed blood.

“Percy, behind you,” the elf warned his companion instinctively reaching for an arrow on his hip. The Ranger thought better of it retracting his hand. He was too close, it wasn’t worth wasting his shot when the fishman was just a few feet away. Instead Galen took his bow in both hand and swung it down at the creature trying to go after Percy.

Hex

(Click for Sheet) @James Zapata

"Well, this boat refuses to cooperate," Hex declared with a sigh as the water continued coming in through the holes. He glanced at the spot where a half-orc was half-drowning. "Ah, a live one! Nice day for a swim, is it?" Hex thought of helping the poor chap, but he wasn't exactly the strong pulling type. Thankfully one of the others solved that particular quandary for him.

The orc's splashing apparently alerted the marine predators that there was food to be had. Strangely enough, the same orc wanted to "keep" the shark with the boat? As the creatures approached, Hex took out the sword and shield strapped to his back. Hex then felt the harpy respond mentally to his greeting, which made the half-elf smile. "A lovely name! I'd love to chat, but we're a wee bit busy at the moment..."

IC Blood in the Water
Only two of the party, Girgdan, and Percy, are fast enough to respond to the attacks from the shark and the two shark-like humanoids that attack the boat. Girgan lands a solid blow on the shark with his Battle Axe, and Percy lashes out at one of the shark-like creatures with his quarterstaff. Both creatures are seriously wounded (~50%). Rather than discouraging the creatures, the injuries seem to drive them into a frenzy.

The shark bites Hex, rather than the Barbarian that injured them. Meanwhile, the shark-person facing Hex attacks the Warlock with its spear and a nasty bite. The two injuries drive Hex to near unconsciousness. In fact, it is only his experiences fighting the pirates that allowed the Warlock to remain conscious.

Unfortunately, it is Percy, the Monk who newly arrived in the West Marches, that takes the worst of the attacks. The second Sahuagin bites him and rams his spear into the monk. Percy slumps motionless in the bottom of the leaking boat.

  • I NPCed Percy who seriously damaged one of the Sahaugin. If healed, Percy will be able to act this round. Otherwise, we'll need a death saving throw.

Hex

(Click for Sheet) @James Zapata

Perhaps it was his recent experiences against pirates that enabled Hex to protect himself from these sea predators. They tribe to bite and pierce him with their sharp things, but the arcane barrier Hex had prepared in advance rebuffed their attacks. Unfortunately, one of the others - the tattooed human - had no such protection.

"Welp, that's my cue!"

The half-drow half-jumped back to extricate himself from such a precarious predicament. He weaved out of the boat's edge and settled on the stern. It wasn't much considering this was such a small vessel, but Hex would take any edge he could get.

"Have at it, friends!"

To the flying harpy, Hex sent: "Teema-friend! Can you heal? I think one of these humans are, y'know, dying. Or you can distract these ugly teethy things. Can you distract?"

When Hex thought "ugly, teethy things," his mouth moved of their own accord, magic infused in his words.

Excellent - me shipmates know how much I love smacking things and made room for me. Once I finish... The Half-Orc grins and grits his teeth, (a nasty look that doesn't express happiness unless you know him) and gives another mighty swing at the Shark "kill, err... subduing this finned fiend."

"Once I've done with the shark I will be smacking the fish mans next - appreciate the room for axe swinging"

Girgadan makes to move over so he can cover Percy and put some axe marks in fishy folk once he subdues the shark.
