Cha-kra Once the adventuring party had reconvened, Cha-kra brought them to the Red Lady where they were let aboard. The adventurers who actually possessed social grace politely waited for their Thri-kreen companion to introduce them to Captain Rockabasher. But if they had expected anything of the sort, they were quickly proven how much Cha-kra considered such human customs. "I am back. These will be the new hunters, and we have new hunting grounds. We're not going to choose the same approach, nor will we waste time on overland travel again. When will you be able to set sail? We have the gold that you asked for the last time." The chitinous insectoid confronted the captain in the bluntest way imaginable. It didn't even appear as if he expected his new companions to take part in these negotiations, if Cha-kra even attempted to negotiate at all. The adventurers had already heard from him that the captain had been for sale once, so it somewhat seemed as if the mantis was jumping the conversation straight to the end.

He switches to a friendly smile for the 'real' adventurers. "Shall we, gentlemen?" As they walk up the gangplank, the half-elf whispers to the kenku. "Be a good sport, my friend, and play the role of a loyal retainer for the negotiation. We want to make a good first impression." As the group assembles before the captain, Confor nods respectfully (though not deferentially) to him. "Hello Captain Rockabasher. I'll come straight to the point. The group of adventurers that sailed with you previously brought back a map of sorts, I'm sure you remember it, relating to a pirate's ill-gotten treasure. My colleagues and I have formed an adventuring company to search for and hopefully recover this treasure. We would like to hire the Red Lady to transport us. Snap Kick Snap Kick's eyes roll eagerly at the instructions he receives from Confor and he cackles his assent. After the warlock finishes making his request of the Captain, the kenku ambles up beside Confor. Reaching out his left hand while keeping his eyes firmly on the half-orc, he squeezes Confor's jaw between his thumb and the rest of his fingers, squishing the man's lower lip slightly. Then he says in a tough guy voice, "Is that a face you can trust or what? They oughta stick this face on a stamp, whaddya think?" He wobbles the warlock's chin back and forth in a gruffly affectionate manner before dropping his hand again, then tilts his head and watches Rockabasher's reaction expectantly.

Cha-kra approaches the captain followed by confor and snap kick. You convince the captain to have him take you aboard. He goes to accept the gold from cha-kra. Seems we've got ourselves a good adventure. yeah? Be prepared for monsters of the deep and the sea hag. Ready men were to head out prepare the sails and rigging.

"So we have secured passage to the mysterious isle," he observes, catching the tail end of Rockabasher's agreement. "Well done!" With a nod and a slight gesture, Arrogaio encourages Cha-kra's payment to the captain,* then leads the way up the gangplank. Once on deck, Arrogaio pauses to take in the scene and to respond to Rockabasher's warning. "Marine terrors," he carefully enunciates. "Captain, you will find me and my crew unsinkable."

As a DM, I usually don't actually charge a payment required by the mission, but if we're tracking it, let's remember to get that back to Cha-kra when we split loot. He seems like the type who will speak up if the others "forget," no?

Cha-kra It took very little encouragement for Cha-kra to pay Captain Rockabasher as the Thri-kreen warrior was already standing there with the counted-out coinage that would suffice to hire this ship's services. The mantis handed the gold over with one of his secondary limbs and just as soon the orc began instructing his sailors to start preparing their departure, Cha-kra reconvened with the other adventurers and listened to hear what their information search had uncovered while he hadn't even lifted a single antenna. There were many peculiarities that were attached to the bits and pieces that the rumor mill had attached to Blackbeard and the man who superseded him, but even as the others explained about foreign territories and possible encounters that could await them along the way, the insectoid hunter didn't physically react to the conversation until the matter of turning to stone was brought up. "Turning to stone is clearly magic. Do any of you know magic?" For the moment, Cha-kra's psionics were still in their infancy, but he didn't bother to explain his actual abilities to his party, seemingly assuming that his arsenal of weapons would describe plenty how martial he was in his approach to combat. Otherwise, it appeared like the Thri-kreen wasn't ready to spend much more time in Westhaven, giving a brief reasoning when one of Confor's new mateys talked about wanting to buy some whiskey. "Don't waste time. We don't know how soon the pirates will arrive at their goal, so we will want to be faster. Don't hold us back." And even without a particularly aggressive annunciation, the or else in Cha-kra's statement appeared heavily implied. He clearly thought nothing about the evidently cumbersome troop that had wanted to join the real adventurers on this outing.

"You should know that I am quite practiced in the arcane arts. Like so," he says, pointing to his open palm, where a rose blossom Prestidigitationsuddenly appears. He closes his fist around it. "And so," he says, opening his palm to reveal a diamond instead. He claps his hands together, opens them to release a small shower of sparks, then smiles proudly. Arrogaio raises an eyebrow in bemusement over Cha-kra's commands. "I appreciate your eagerness, Cha-kra," he says, with some reservation, "but do not worry; I will see us to the prize. You will receive your fair share." Arrogaio considers the thri-kreen's minimal garb. "If you value riches," he adds. "I have not previously had the pleasure of meeting one of your kind," Arrogaio informs Cha-kra. He holds a hand up, but something in the thri-kreen's stance recommends against touching his exoskeleton. "Are you from this land? I wonder what brings you here. What does your heart desire, Cha-kra?" Arrogaio points toward the thri-keen's chest. "If I may presume..."

Rhazor Blackhand (rogue level 4) Rhazor had listened to the conversations of his comrades, but said nothing. He knew practically nothing about the history of the map, nor about seafaring. As he looks around the ship, he sees only a lot of ropes.... pardon... hawsers, oars and sails, and wood. Lots of wood. A lot of wood that moved. That the ground was moving worried the young rogue the most. His last adventure had started on a flying boat, continued in a huge ship and ended in a barrel. With him trapped inside. In a barrel on a wild river trip. Like some stupid dwarf on the run from elves... He felt sick again just at the memory. Was this a good omen or a bad one? In any case, he had to make a sacrifice to the sea god before the ship left. A big one. Stinginess never paid off with the gods. Generosity didn't always either, but stinginess never did. And he still had to buy 2 healing potions. In case divine generosity didn't help either. As a backup. Only a fool trusted the gods alone.

Snap Kick Snap Kick bounds up onto the ship, his excitement rising at the thought of feeling the open air rushing through his feathers out at sea. It had been a while since he piloted that strange otherworldly hovercraft known as Valkyrie. He hoped she was doing well. But now, a new mission called. He squawked at the sight of a long ladder rising up the side of a mast to the crow's nest. Oh, yes! That was the place to be. He taps Confor on the shoulder then points up at the crow's nest while hopping eagerly from one foot to the other and whistling. Then he dashes to the mast and scales the ladder to the top as quickly as he can. A few minutes pass, after which the party hears faintly from high above, "I can see my house from here!"

Confor uses his knowledge of the arcane to understand that their might be a sea witch who might be able to control the elements of the ocean. Everything else seems natural or historical.

He adds, "Speaking of adventure on the high seas, I’ve heard tell that this Blackbeard whom we’re racing may be in another pirate’s employ. Have you heard of a sea-dog. who styles himself “The Blue Eyed Captain”?"

Cha-kra The Thri-kreen warrior watched Arrogaio's arcane artistry without interrupting, although it wasn't surprising that his chitinous face showed no appreciation. Once the boisterous honorary son of the Shining Lands had finished his presentation, Cha-kra appeared pressed to explain why he had asked about magic in the first place. And so he did in his ever-curt manner. "Are these gestures able to undo petrification?" His mandibles snapped shut, underlining that this demonstration had been pointless if the magic had been as ineffectual as it had looked. The difference in wavelength between Arrogaio and the mantis kept showing itself as Cha-kra threatened the scoundrels which Confor had picked up somewhere along the way. The Champion of Skuld professed once more that he would lead this party to the riches behind their quest, yet evidently this wasn't able to capture Cha-kra's passion. It grew increasingly questionable that the Thri-kreen had even a single passionate bone behind his exoskeleton, but when he was asked whether he valued riches the insectoid chose to answer at least. "I don't value human craftsmanship. Your tokens of trade are a lot less valuable than your kind seems to think." And then without any hesitation he contradicted his disinterest in riches in the very next sentence. "My share will find me surely." And that was all the explanation that Cha-kra offered. But it took more to curb Arrogaio's conversational curiosity than Cha-kra's unsociable replies and so he ended up inquiring more about the Thri-kreen's origins. With no visible reaction to the plated human's raised hand, the mantis stood stoically even when said hand was lowered to point at his carapaced chest. And while the question about his anatomy was easily disregarded, for some arbitrary reason Cha-kra deigned to reply even though a few seconds of silence suggested that he might not. "I came from beyond the sea. These are my new hunting grounds." His eery mandibles snapped shut and as always the seemingly needless gesture reminded everybody how alien Cha-kra was. There was one more moment where no reply followed before the mantis offered as much insight into his desires as he would. "We Thri-kreen don't desire beyond what is required." And then he spread his arms to point his claws into all cardinal directions at once. "To survive this world, one requires skill. Make sure, human, that your skills will allow you to survive. Then your desires won't have been quite as foolish." Cha-kra lowered his limbs and the sailors sang as their captain announced that the ship would set out. On his bent legs, the mantis began to stalk away to explore below deck. He ignored any possibly philosophical reply.

"With an elegant leap, he jumps over the railing and disappears between the alleys of the harbor. A few minutes later - thanks to quick steps and a brief, nearly rudely brief conversation with the landlady of his room - he's back. His backpack and a bundle of weapons land heavily on the wooden deck. "OK, I'm ready."

Snap Kick High above the deck, Snap Kick stands at the rail of the crow's nest. Although this ship is not yet fully underway, being at a height always makes him feel good. He watches his companions on the deck below, and the sailors finally making ready to cast off. A surge of well being fills the kenku. The party can hear from above what sounds oddly like an entire chorus of male and female voices, rowdy and clearly tipsy: "Oh....what do ye do with a drunken sailor What do ye do with a drunken sailor What do ye do with a drunken sailor Ear-lye in tha moooor-nin'?"
