Rhazor Blackhand
right-aligned image

Rhazor watches in amazement as Arrogaio climbs aboard with the trapped creature and then suddenly dry heaves. If these beings have language and magic, what are they here to protect? Or are they just serving as guards?
Rhazor is about to ask these questions of the group when Arrogaio steps to helpless prisoner who is wrapped in a fishing net of the ship by the sailors, and kills the helpless prisoner with a thrust of his throwing spear to the head. What was that all about? Rhazor does not see any logical connection. What did he want to prove? That he has the longest? That he is the biggest killer on board?
Rhazor doesn't regret that he helped a murderer - probably his skills are still needed, but the warrior has to earn possible sympathy points completely new. That is, if this interests Arrogaio at all.

Instead of further thoughts, Rhazor now turns to his 4 HP damagewounds left on his body by the sea spawn's spikes. "Can someone please cure these scratches? I have the unpleasant feeling, the fighting isn't going to stop here and there're more nasty inhabitants on the island, too."

Snap Kick
right-aligned image

Snap Kick saunters over to the group just as Arrogaio performs his summary execution of the captive sea spawn. He squawks in shock and raises a finger in admonition. "That's not cool, Butters. You don't shoot a guy in the di..." A burst of seagull chatter overhead drowns out the end of the monk's sentence.

When the racket dies down, it becomes clear to the kenku that nobody shares his indignation. Typical. "Monsters haunt the land, on two legs or four or none, hungering for blood." He nods to himself and moves back to the ship's rail to look out over the rocks, curious to watch Duha's test of the rocks.

Cha-kra
right-aligned image

Cha-kra looked unimpressed as the battle abated and Arrogaio pulled the last remaining of the beach pests onto the deck, though possibly the Thri-kreen's demeanor had to be attributed to his lack of facial expression rather than a general disinterest. Unfortunately it was always barely possible to pick up any nuances in his opinion about matters, unless the mantis explicitly went to the effort of verbalizing his thoughts. Which for the moment he didn't do. Tying his elven longbow back onto his back, the insectoid's antennae twitched when he heard the captain's comment about illusions in the water. The idea of illusions correlated with the clues that the adventurers had received from their treasure map, but it was only through the added explanation of his companions that the Three-kreen knew how to interpret the previous information. While Arrigaio made a spectacle out of an execution and sent out his familiar to confirm the area, Cha-kra stood still in his crow's nest and verified what was truth and which didn't exist with his own facetted eyes.

For the first time since the party headed out from the inn, the psionic insect saw a reason to employ his ever-growing powers as he reached out to the entire crew's minds and conferred his findings into their head. ~The terrain was falsified by magic. Give me a moment to look for threats.~ The unnerving connection to the adventurer's minds had been established entirely unannounced, and due to the Thri-kreen's telepathy, they could now wordlessly understand his thoughts, more thoroughly as if he had stood right next to them and talked directly into their ears. It was a bodiless, directionless transfer of information, yet it came with the same emotionless curtness as when the Cha-kra had awkwardly spoken the common tongue before. His telepathy was much easier to follow, as uncomfortable as the intrusion was for some, and it begged the question why the mantis had gone to the trouble of choking out enunciated words before. It was the first time the adventurers understood that Cha-kra was no mere hunter that only relied on his weapons and guile, though the extent of his psionics was still somewhat of an unknown. Apparently, Cha-kra didn't deem his powers relevant to explain, and for a few seconds he only scanned the illusionary shoreline, this time knowing that he was looking to see more than some strange phenomenon wanted him to see. At the least his supernatural talents didn't make him a healer. Or just as likely Cha-kra ignored Rhazor for any other reason. From the insectoid's chitinous face, nobody could tell.

Confor's big mouthA keeper. How droll. But Confor said nothing, because he was both impressed and intimidated by Arrogaio’s feat. Pulled into the water by tentacled beasts, he not only out swam—in armor!—and out grappled a foe, he had pulled him back into the boat. The captain wrapped the prisoner up in netting while the warlock walked over to the edge of the ship and whistled for his familiar to return and report. A pity that cleric of Umberlee isn’t here for the interrogation...although, if the creature speaks Aquan it might understand my Primordial. "I’ll try captain, though--"

"--the torture of its damned existence." And as the former criminal turns around to tweak his rival he sees the man kill the ‘prisoner.’ Everyone else seems taken aback a moment, as if they hadn’t been trying to kill this person just a minute ago. In the back of his mind, Confor hears the distant laughter of Gnarlus. Only the kenku objected to the unnecessary killing, and the half-elf willed away a feeling of misplaced(?) shame. "Careful, Snapkick. We wouldn’t want The Beacon to decide you needed relief from your damned existence."

"By the way, Champion, I know the Primordial tongue. If it spoke Aquan, I might have been able to interrogate it. Course I would have felt bad about killing it after. "<Idiot. You wouldn’t have wanted to kill him after. Arrogaio did you a favor, boy.> He ignored his patron’s voice, though it fueled his shame, and the half-elf's restraint slips further. "You planning on stuffing and mounting your “keeper” for your den when we get back?" He then turned towards Rhazor. "Catch," he says while tossing a healing potion at the young adventurer.
OOCConfor gives Rhazor one of his healing potions (2d4+2 hp).

Arrogaio takes a breath as the crew relieve him of his prisoner. "If this thing could speak," he responds to the captain, "I doubt it would tell us anything other than the torture of its damned existence. "The fighter abruptly draws a javelin and runs it through the monster's skull.

Snap Kick saunters over to the group just as Arrogaio performs his summary execution of the captive sea spawn. He squawks in shock and raises a finger in admonition. "That's not cool, Butters. You don't shoot a guy in the di..."A burst of seagull chatter overhead drowns out the end of the monk's sentence.

Rhazor questions the motive of the creature while comfor seems to do so verbally.

Rhazor asks for healing from the creatures while waiting for what to do next

For the first time since the party headed out from the inn, the psionic insect saw a reason to employ his ever-growing powers as he reached out to the entire crew's minds and conferred his findings into their head. "~The terrain was falsified by magic. Give me a moment to look for threats."

With a wave of his hand, Arrogaio is magically dry, clean, and handsomely coifed. He turns to follow the direction of the captain's observations. "Indeed, Captain" he confirms." I wondered if anyone else had noticed the telltale signs of illusion. It now appears that our original path to shore is clear. Turn us back that way, while Duha verifies that the way is clear."

The two worked together to clear the illusion and though mostly clear on tides of the beach you could see grung and newt like people. The grung seemed to be warriors while holding spears and the newts seemed to be spell casters and the ones attempting to hold the illusion.

Small huts were built that seemed to fit for these creatures. With the danger of the sea spawn over the grung seemed to be wrapping their spears though the newts still held the illusion.

“‘Not cool?’” Arrogaio repeated in a bemused tone, then smiled. “You think you could question such a thing,” he observed. “No, it is like…eh…what do you call them here? ‘Walker’…‘infected’…” He snapped his fingers. “A zombie.. Still riding that good knowledge skill check a while back. *shrug*A sea zombie. They are only to be destroyed, preferably burned. Once, when I was travelling in Durpar – ” Arrogaio began, before the reports of the activity ashore aborted his tale.

"Ah!" he exclaimed contentedly at the sight of the humanoids on the beach. "Now these," he said, pointing toward the shore, "you can interrogate - provided that you speak the unique language of the grung. And are those firenewts?" he asked rhetorically. "It seems they have found some way to communicate."

Arrogaio paused to consider the situation. "Caution would suggest that we engage them at longbow range," he said, "but...we are not invaders, or marauders. Perhaps I can negotiate a peaceful passage. A warning, though," he added. "Do not touch the grung with your bare skin, in combat or otherwise." Arrogaio glanced at the inscrutable, and chitinous, Cha-kra. "I am told that the experience is most unspleasant."

Rhazor Blackhand
right-aligned image

When Confor wants to hand over the healing potion to Rhazor, the young rogue shakes his head. "Thanks, but this is overdoing. It's just a deep scratch." This isn't completely true, but Rhazor still feels strong and tough and doesn't want to use an expensive healing potion.
"I though more about a minor healing spell or so, but thanks a lot!"

Then, he turns with the others to the beach to watch the amphibious defenders awaiting them. "How many to you see?" he asks the others, especially the one in the outlook before he tries to count the foes on his own.

ConforArrogaio's knowledge surprised and embarassed Confor. The bastard had effortlessly shown the warlock up again. "Sea spawn are a form of lesser undead? Well well, we learn something new every day, eh Snapkick?" He glanced over at his friend the kenku with an apologetic expression. He looked over at the shore as Screwtape became visible and perched on his shoulder as the fighter-mage continued a lecture on grung and firenewts. "Ah, you've met Prrup-tik I take it? Yes, a grung's skin secretions are poisonous and they can use their skin to apply the poison to their weapons. So if we can avoid fighting them, it would be good. As for talking to the fire newts, maybe. I know Primordial, which may allow us to talk. Don't get your hopes up though."

The warlock shrugs when the rogue declines the use of the healing potion, then presses it on him again. "Just stow it in your pack, in case it's needed to help yourself or someone else in the middle of battle. You never know Rhazor," the former con-man said with a grin, "it might be my life you save if I go down during a fight."

Snap Kick

Snap Kick clicks sympathetically at Confor's comment. He responds in the voice of a wise, elderly man, "While I’m still confused and uncertain it’s on a much higher plane, d’you see, and at least I know I’m bewildered about the really fundamental and important facts of the universe."

Then the kenku goes back to mulling over how much he loved the shortbow Briggs had lent him, and wondering when he would get to shoot it at something else. He eyes the creatures on the beach hopefully. But then Confor explains about trying to not fight the grung, and he whistles disappointedly.

Cha-kra
right-aligned image

Cha-kra had spent a long time in the crow's nest isolating himself from his party, but after he keenly saw through the illusion that had been masking the reptilian and amphian sentients that had their hamlet on this shore, he stacked all his belongings and swiftly made his descend, jumping the rest of the distance where he landed nimbly next to his adventuring companions who had been trading verbal jabs. The Thri-kreen warrior arrived just in time to listen to the end of Arrogaio's explanation about grungs and firenewts, finding the knight regarding him with his gaze. Once more the mantis telepathy invaded the minds of those who were on deck, yet the choice to listen to Cha-kra's thoughts was theirs as their mental defiance would have shut him out easily. ~Why is that? Are they a poisonous frog race?~

The insectoid clicked his mandibles as he turned to look past the ship's railing while Confor gave the answer to his question instead of Arrogaio. For a while his unblinking eyes just regarded the village before them, until Rhazor inquired about what the other adventurers counted of their population. At that Cha-kra turned around with an alien, curt motion, and after a few steps he was bearing down on the human rogue, putting him face to face with his chitinous face and mandibles. ~They number slightly less than three dozen. Maybe one dozen of them ready to oppose an invasion.~ There was an eery stillness to Cha-kra as he conveyed his thoughts to all around him, and only a single snap of his mandible created actual noise. ~More importantly. Who in our group possesses magical healing? Who possess magic at all?~ His antennae quivered slightly. ~Magic is very practical. I want to know what our party can do. If we land and will make these creatures tell us if they know about the progress of our prey and whether they can decipher more of the landmarks on the map, then I want to plan with all our capabilities to achieve their compliance. We might gain more with a non-violent approach. Any of you may talk.~ Finally Cha-kra turned his facetted gaze away from Rhazor and regarded the entirety of his party. ~Does magic exist to alter thoughts or to break wills?~

Briggs IC
left-aligned image
Briggs shows no interest in interrogating the Sea Spawn. He doubts diplomacy of any kind would work on such a creature, and even an inveterate scoundrel like Briggs finds the idea of torture distasteful.

But the mention of Grung piques his interest. "Ah, now maybe they can be reasoned with. I've worked with a Grung before, and I must say he was a right decent sort. Lent me his own magic sword when I had no other weapon that would wound our foes. If one of us can translate, I'd be happy to open negotiations."

"Yes," Arrogaio agrees with Briggs, "I have seen that one in town. An amusing little fool - he looks like a frog, but acts like a puppy. I am glad he has not gotten himself killed yet."

Arrogaio frowns at Cha-kra's silent monologue. "'May talk...'" he repeats. "An imperious manner will not endear you to anyone," he informs the thri-kreen, "at least of the mammalian races. But I will try to make allowances. Your question.

"Our friend Briggs, you have seen, is a man of action, wielding those pokers with finesse. I doubt that our avian companion possesses the ability to master the vocalizations often required in the working of magic. You already know me to be proficient - to say the least - in the arcane arts, but I do not engage in the distasteful manipulation of minds. Perhaps Confor? And Rhazor here - well, he can answer for himself. You do have a certain sly air about you..."

Snap Kick waves a hand before Arrogaio defiantly, and declaims dramatically, "A la peanut butter sandwiches!"

ConforThe anger of an illegitimate, unwanted son stirred within Confor again as the obnoxious cretin insulted the others. Arrogaio, did you need to training to be such an offensive sell-sword or is it natural talent? If you weren't so useful... But the words were left unsaid, as the half-elf still felt foolish from the last time he challenged the bully. Instead the warlock opted for less confrontational words. "If I could change the minds of others, I wouldn't start with the newts or grungs."

Not expecting that he could get the island inhabitants to negotiate, but deciding it wouldn't hurt to try, the warlock stepped up to the edge of the boat and conjured up the Misty Visions Invocationillusion of a the illusions he can create can fill a cube 15 feet on a sidelarge white flag being waved back and forth above his head. "PARLEY!" He shouted the phrase in Common, then in Primordial. "We don't want to fight you! Will you talk to us?" He again repeated the phrase in both tongues.

Rhazor Blackhand
right-aligned image

Rhazor nods to Confor's explanation. "Well, then this one is reserved for you." He puts the healing potion into one of his pockets. The young rogue isn't sure whether Confor's choice is good or bad and he has not much time to think about it, because the oversized locust approaches. Not just in his head which is already quite disgusting, but moving closely into Rhazor's personal space. The face and the moving mandibles makes him nearly puke. Fortunately, the sour smell of the beast's mouth is blown away by the sea breeze. Rhazor expects the antennas to touch his face any moment, so he steps back.
On this ship, everyone is nuts,...

But he's also unable finish this though as the other males start a loud testosterone-powered quarrel about ... well ... who is the greatest ... whatever. Rhazor doesn't listen, but it's clear that Arrogaio wins. This time. Unfortunately. The young rogue doesn't care. He has no ambitions as leader and as long as the warlock is front of him and not in his back, he feels much safer.
So he watches the defiant Confor as he takes the initiative again and starts the first trial for negotiations with the strange amphibians.
