Hey, all.

I have been playing ttrpgs for near 20 years. Most of my experience is with D&D 3.5e, 4e, and 5e and some Cypher System. But, I am really interested in playing more indie or rules lite systems like Mothership, Troika!, Monster Care Squad, and a slew of others.

I work a night shift job and have had issues finding a steady game to fit that schedule. Solo GMless rpg has been real fun but nothing quite replaces the experience of cooperative storytelling with others. I have figured I should try play-by-post games. A few google searches later I found RPG Crossing.

Looking forward to exploring this new facet of the hobby and meeting you all.

Welcome to RPG Crossing.

I too highly recommend checking out the New Player Solo Game in the main forum's Solo Games/New Gamers folder. There are 13th Age, Call of Cthulhu, DnD (3.5, 4, 5), FATE, Pathfinder (1), and Travelers many game systems to pick from and once signed up, you will be paired with a patient and helpful GM that can help show you the ropes of how to do things at this site. They can also be an excellent person to ask any questions to while you are getting up to speed on things.

All these things can be done with the Hero System. Champions, Dark Champions, Star Hero, and Monster Hunter International (that is based on the novels of the same name).So, ever wanted to be a superhero fighting crime to make the world a safer place? Or don a mask and make the criminals fear your brand of justice? Or go where no man has gone before and explore the outer reaches of the known universe and beyond? Or have you ever wanted to join the Monster Hunter International (MHI) team to track down things that go bump in the night while the Monster Control Bureau (MCB) does everything they can to keep those things a secret and dreading the day you have to deal with the Special Task Force Unicorn (STFU) teams from the MCB?

Welcome, FavoredFrenemy! Very cool you're getting into PbP to get around those scheduling issues. I was also drawn to it for those reasons, but have since found that PbP has so many other awesome aspects that table-top RPing doesn't, like really getting into your character and being around such amazing writers!

Are you a player or a GM?

 

• New game adverts are like the weather in that there might be a pattern and overall consistency to them, but like the weather droughts and floods can and do occur.
• Real Life is also like the weather so leave yourself time for the expected and unexpected, don't overextend yourself and the same applies to those you play with.
• Games can get lots of applications and you will be passed over, treat it as a bad roll and move on
• The solo game is a great intro - do one. You can also join other games early on but be upfront about your experience
• Some real soloists play Ironsworn Give it a whirl...
• Wow - even more free fun what are you waiting for
• What even more gaming opportunities
• Give XP when you see or read something you like (the scales icon on the top right of every post)
• The staff are kind but human so don't ignore the rules, smackdowns can be public
• Some of this is in the rules and some of this is in my head - use accordingly

Troika was super simple to set up as a solo game and it forces a gonzo high fantasy setting. I played using the Acid Death Fantasy setting book. I feel like the game would shine so much more with a good group. Which is great if you're aiming for wild almost Spelljammer-esk adventures.

I usually GM and vastly enjoy GMing over playing. New to PBP, so I wanna play in a game first. I think I'll get in line for a Solo game here. If I grasp it well enough I'll start GMing soon as I have some material.

I love the username!

It sounds like you are an experienced player. I'm a D&D guy too (5e now but my favorite is AD&D) who enjoys fantasy, but I have played many other RPG systems. It sounds like you are looking for a place to role play, and not just roll play. Well, there is some incredible role playing going on here. I thought I was a a pretty good story teller, but I have been put to shame by the quality of some of the players...and I have learned a lot. I sent a link to one such site I've been lucky enough to be a part of below. You should check out the Hall of Fame games over the years for others.

As others have said, you may want to check out a solo game. Even if you have PbP experience each site is a bit different.

This is a place where the people are welcoming, where the games are interesting, and where generally they only expect you to post a few times a week. I've been playing D&D for a very long time and I thought I've seen it all, but this site has some amazing games going on. I've been playing (storytelling as much as rolling) for a bit over two years now in a game that has been going on continuously for four decades, started tabletop and moved online two decades ago. It's set in an alternate Europe where the worlds of Tolkien and Howard existed in ages past. So there is a hint of LOTR and a hint of Conan in it and since it's set in an alt Europe it somehow feels familiar.

This is just one example and there are other great campaigns on RPGX. You should take some time to "stroll around" the site and see if anything catches your eye.

Well met, Frenemy!

I've had fun with solitaire RPGing myself in the past. Been wanting to get back into it, but have been holding back. In addition, agreed about indies and rules-lite, especially for online play. I could find a D&D game anywhere, in addition to other popular games. Why not play something more niche or underrated? And while I do enjoy some good crunch here and there, I respect rules-lite games like PbtAs that just give you the rules in plain flappin' English, and respect one's intelligence. And one's gaming experience!

I can definitely recommend the solo adventure to start off here, especially to get one's feet wet. There'll be games out there when you're well and ready, trust me. Great to have ya!

Well I went out and looked at Troika and it sounds suitably nuts and nostalgic as Adv FF was what got me into this hobby (choose your own adventure being the gateway that got me there)

You know what happens when you grow up, your free time to money ratio changes. So I bought Troika but now I need to find time to read it along with all the other stuff this place It doesn't but I do have a book buying problemFORCES me to buy.
