"Stinger" Drum, 2L Fighter Custom Lineage (Dwarf/Halfing)Crossbow Expert | Archery Style | Second Wind 1/1 | Action Surge 1/1

left-aligned image

For the first few minutes after the mercenaries have sequestered themselves from the more debilitating toxins, Stinger Drum nonetheless watches the continuing harder drinking, perhaps cautiously, or perhaps enviously. After he has downed a couple of shots of the weaker stuff, though, he settles into a pleasant distraction. The dwarfling works at a partially unrolled parchment with a straightedge, a pen, some charcoal, and cartographer's toolssome less recognizable metal instruments. Anyone stealing a look can now deduce the purpose of Stinger’s regular note-taking while on the road: he is making a map.

Syrota Hittebarn
right-aligned image

The appearance of Oodiliana in the form of a winged, owl-headed humanoid had thrown Syrota a little, though there was some sense of diminishing returns on the mage's ability to surprise the urchin. After all, once you'd established that someone had the propensity to be turned into a talking animal by magical means, becoming some different combination of humanoid and wildlife necessarily lost a little of its shock value. Oodiliana had never actually said she'd been a human prior to becoming a sheep, after all, even if Syrota had absolutely made that assumption. She wasn't sure this owlish configuration was the 'true' Oodiliana, either - if such a thing even existed - but arrangements for their departure had continued apace, and she'd missed the opportunity to ask.

Not that it particularly mattered to the Half-Elf to begin with. Her life to date didn't exactly teach her that you could be choosy about who was allowed to care for you. She didn't know why Oodiliana gave a damn, but she clearly did, and Syrota was grateful for that.

Syrota allowed herself the occasional glance at her friend swooping gracefully above, but like Zook, her eyes largely fixated on the road ahead. Even without the memory of ambush seared into her mind, constant vigilance had become a matter of habit. Nevermind that it had been Oodiliana, not her, who had officially been tasked with the role of lookout.

Still, though her knuckles would remain white from gripping her shortbow throughout, the journey passed off uneventfully. Syrota emerged with a yawn into the evening air, noting with satisfaction that none of her travelling companions had been waylaid. While Zook took it upon himself to tend to his mount, Syrota opted to offer Jon her assistance in cleaning his mud-sodden boots. She suspected that the blond human must have been bone-tired, having been the only member of the party to have made the journey on foot, though he didn't seem like the type that would admit it.

Once inside, Syrota had devoured the simple stew as if it were the best meal she had had in months, for the simple reason that it was. Feeling sufficiently grateful to the innkeeper for his generosity, she disregarded Zook's warning about the after-dinner tipple, and tossed it down her throat with enthusiasm. That it did not immediately return took reserves of fortitude that the girl hadn't known she possessed. Still, the slight greenish tinge that overtook her told anyone who was paying attention quite how poor a decision that had been.

Unable to trust her insides any longer, Syrota retired to bed prior to any of her companions. Though the room initially spun unpleasantly, the fact that the surroundings were more luxurious than anything she'd experienced in a decade meant that it did not take her long to enter into a long, deep slumber.

Declan
right-aligned image

Like many of their group, Declan keep a wary eye on the cobblestone road. As they pass a father and son travelling with their ox drawn cart, he feels his thoughts try to drift back to his own youth. Time in the woods spent with his own father. A tinge of sorrow snaps his mind back to the present. He was on a job, and that needed his focus. Solidifying his resolve. The groups of chained prisoner roadworkers don't contain anyone he'd arrested. That was good. He wasn't city watch anymore, however if any that he had arrested held a grudge, they wouldn't care about that detail.

Song always made travelling pass quicker. For that reason, he was thankful for the colorful Owlin. Most of her songs he didn't recognize, but he enjoyed them all the same. Before long it was evening and they have reached their first stopover. The Old Boar Hunter. After dismounting, and before heading inside Declan helps Prod stable the wagon, horse, and dogs. Inside Declan glances around the room. Noting the layout and customers. Smirking slightly as the three friends greet one another, and offering a friendly nod to the innkeeper as welcomes each of the party member.

Accepting the bread and vegetable stew with a thanks. It was funny how a long day of travel had a way of making good food taste so much better. Declan rarely drank, and when he did, he preferred cider. Not wanting to offend their host, the fighter conceded and accepted the drink. Having second thoughts after Zook's words of warning. Watching in surprise as Syrota chooses to down the drink, then proceeds to turn a few shades of green. Instead, opting to drink slowly. The oily substance's gradual ooze down the throat start strong and progressed into a discomforting burn. The after effects resolve him that next time he would risk being rude.

Excusing himself for the night, Declan bides his travelling companions a good night before leaving the taproom. Stepping outside for a bit of fresh air before bed. Once out of view of the innkeeper, he also takes the opportunity to make himself vomit behind a rain barrel to help get the substance out of his body. Wiping his face clear, he makes his way to the straw beds. Unbuckling his sheathes and laying his weapons alongside his bed. After removing his armor, the fighter props armor and shield against his backpack. Considering her reaction, Declan takes a moment to check on Syrota. Finding her fast asleep, he kneels next to her bed. She was still an off-green color, but seemed to be breathing well and sleeping peacefully. As he walks away, he pauses briefly when he hears a small squeaking noise. A mouse? Looking around but not see anything, he chooses to dismiss it as the drink. Returning to his bed, Declan lays down, looking up at the ceiling. Slowly his blue eyes drift close.

DreamThe cry of man and metal fill the forest. Combat rages around. Men and women in leather armor trading blow for blow with goblinkin in hide. Bodies from both sides litter the battlefield. A younger Declan stubbles over the body of a villager. Looking down at the man's mutilated face stare skyward. Then recognition. Horror as he realizes the dead man was his father.

So lost in grief, he doesn't notice the hobgoblin approaching until it is too late. The cleaver swings for his head as he raises his unarmed hands. Just as the blade should bite into his flesh, there is a shimmer of energy and the blade ricochets. He doesn't have time to even consider the question of why before his would-be killer tries again. Declan dodges. Snatching a weapon up from the battlefield, the young fighter sidesteps another swing and slide the longsword into the belly of creature. The look of surprise as blood spills out of its stomach.

After Stinger’s inquiry, Oodiliana offered a curtsy and smiled. ”Fancy hat! Is that to keep your brain from leaking out?”

The owlin flew ahead and landed near Jonathan. ”Good morning. Is there anything I can do to help?” She asked, with a smile. ”Where are you from?” the owlin inquired as she fell in step with the knight. It was a beautiful day for a walk.

When they reached Old Boar Hunter, there was a man force-feeding alcohol to the travelers. The owlin smiled and decided to take a drink; just a taste couldn’t hurt. Her feathers tingled, her skin burned, and her breath felt like fire… ”That’ll do.”

After eating, the sorceress watched Syrota help with Jon’s boots. ”Ooh, do you need help with your armor?” But she noticed that everyone was quiet and allowed them their introspection. Rather than disrupt them, she looked for a rafter or attic to nestle into and awaited the morning. This was proving to be a droll adventure if everyone was going to be keeping to themselves.

Jon
right-aligned image
Jon would indeed keep a more forward position. Often riding in the cart for speed's sake. He'd have just as soon walked alongside the cart with sword and shield at the ready. The road was easy enough, though he kept his eyes peeled for any sign of trouble... that hadn't stopped at the rest point. He was thankful for the food, but when the drink was given... he was trepidatious at best. He didn't drink... not that he wasn't old enough, sixteen was plenty old in many parts of the world... he just never had a taste for it. He had his own goals to focus on... namely return home with an army on his heel and retake his homeland... but he was still not ready for that. He hadn't enough allies... He thanked the innkeeper for the drink regardless, but if he had even a moment's chance to dispose of the drink, be it in a potted plant, or an open window... He'd excuse himself early, and move to settle in for the night. He was still unsure about this group. The Owlkin had been the sheep, which brought with it a'whole'nother series of questions in his mind. He'd excuse himself at the earliest opportunity, drinking only if no other option was available... and hating himself immediately after.

He took his armor off, but kept it tucked, largely, into his traveling pack. Using his bedroll with the straw bed to avoid the itchiness associated with straw. He'd move through some standard sword drills, as part of his evening ritual. His sword would be in its sheath, inside his bedroll, with his shield nearby. He was paranoid by nature... he'd sleep until morning, even if it was a bit fitfully...

On the road to ColdwaterThe night remains quiet. At midnight, an eerie howl of ... something... sounds from the distance. As a response, somewhere in the house, someone rattles with armor and weapons. The attack dogs whine softly. But other than that, nothing happens.

The next day starts with a light rain, changes to heavy rain and goes back to a constant drizzle with icy-cold wind. Cold rain water runs down the neck and the backs through wet clothes and into the boots. It is late afternoon, dark giant rocks and huge mountains rise at the left and right, when the caravan enters a couple of hills with thick coniferous forests on both sides of the road - or what is left: a muddy, overgrown country lane, barely enough wide for the carriages. The drizzle stays, but for now, the wind is shielded by the mountains and the forest.

Dark conifers bend far over the narrow forest path which the carriages drive slowly along. Branches hang into the path from all sides and knee-high grass covers the uneven ground where thousands of roots await the unwary hiker.
The group passes a clearing that Zook knows very well. Prod and Miguel look at each other in silence. Above a few trees, a couple of ravens alight cawing as if there is something pecking there. The ones successful Perception check DC14who are able to look closely or fly over, they can see the remaining of a slim skeleton in a rotten blue dress hanging over a tree. A creepy warning to the new adventurers from the past...

DMOC:Marching order:
- vanguard: Jonathan per pedes
- Prod with his wagon, Declan riding crossbow and the dog.
- Oodiliana (dancing)
- Miguel with his carriage, Syrota riding crossbow and his dog
- rear guards: Stinger, Ringo and Zook on their mules.

Artificer's
right-aligned image

Zook remembered the weather from his last trip to Cold Valley - cold, wet and muddy. So it was that Zooked swapped out one of his devices for another. Typically he took the fidget spinner that gave him Guidance Cantripoccasional glances of insight for a new device that he had dubbed a Prestidigitation CantripMulti-Wand for its all-around utility - it could clean things, heat or cool things, even light or snuff out fires, and flavor foods. In this case, he used the Multi-wand to heat a few scales in his armor. The heated scales warded off the worst of the cold weather. Similarly, Zook would use the Multi-Wand to clean the worst of the mud off Betsy.

Even with his hat and oilskin cloak, the industrious Artificer is soaked and ponders his situation, "A magical force to carry an umbrella? A magical shield against rain? Perhaps extending the Multi-Wand to dry as well as clean?"

Zook shuddered in memory as they entered the clearing that he knew all too well. It was the first time the Gnomish Artificer faced death up close and personal. Fortunately, it was not the first time his Centaur companion Jaeger faced death. Between Jaeger's armor and Zook's Magic Stonepeashooter the pair had prevailed.

Zook spotted the slim skeleton and the blue dress and shuddered. It was a grim reminder of those he'd not been able to save.

Declan
right-aligned image

On routine the fighter woke shortly before dawn, and begins running through his checklist. Checking all his equipment: stock and condition. Then donning his armor. Strapping sheathes at the base of his back, one holding his handaxe and one empty. He secures the longsword to his hip, a shield to his back, and longbow across his torso.

Once ready, the half-Elf makes his way down stairs. Scanning the common room for any of his travel companions. Catching the attention of any inn staff, Declan orders a small portion of food for breakfast before joining any other early risers. Engaging in small talk. Mostly how they slept and any possible hangovers.

Taking his previous position on the first wagon, longbow at hand though bowstring at neutral. Declan throws up his cloak's hood to maintain some protection from the weather. Sitting beside Prod, it's hard not to notice the man's anxiety level rise as they enter the clearing. "Do you see something the rest of us have missed?" Just as he finishes the sentence, he spots the ravens... and then the slim skeleton in a rotten blue dress. Sighing deeply. "Stop the wagon. There is a body. We should bring it with us." Assuming the driver will stop the wagon, Declan prepares to jump down, but waits for the wagon to come to a halt first.

On the road to ColdwaterProd doesn't look too thrilled when Declan demands that the dead woman be recovered - but don't the gods demand the same? And who wants to incur the wrath of the gods. With a deep sigh, he pulls on the reins. "Whoa! Stop!"
He turns to Declan. "Hurry, Declan, this is not a good place to rest." He looks to the treetops as if expecting bad luck to fly in great wings over the forest at any moment.

Declan works his way through the brush and undergrowth to the dead woman. The skeleton is already quite decayed and many bones have been scattered by forest animals, but the half-elf manages to gather almost everything in the fragile scraps of cloth that was once a pretty blue dress.
After a few minutes, he returns to Caravan, who waits for him nervously and anxiously, as if mischief lurked in every shadow. Declan has barely deposited the bones in the cart when Prod cracks the whip. "Giddap! Giddap!" The young warrior makes a quick sprint, then he's back on the carriage seat beside the old merchant.
"May the gods reward you for this!" grumbles Prod grumpily, "But now, on to Coldwater!"

And sure enough, the clouds break briefly at one point and Declan Declan is blessed, now, too.feels divine blessing in his heart.

Silently the caravan travels on. About an hour later, the group passes through a narrow valley with a steep face rock at the south side next to the path, when a sudden icy wind blows along the narrow path and the branches of the trees creak ominously. The dogs growl and then give a bark. Something is lurking there!

Dice Joint initiative check enemies:

(10). They have weird and twisted bodies with eyes glowing like white-hot embers and mummified flesh covering the twisted skeleton. They rise hands which ends up in deadly claw and show teeth that are sharp and jagged like needles.

None of the adventurers has ever seen such a horror, not even in their worst nightmares!

DMOC:Everyone with passive perception above 11 can roll the initiative roll with advantages against DC 10. Success means, you can act immediately.
Everyone with passive perception with 11 or below rolls initiative with disadvantage against DC10.

Initiative with 9 or below means, your character has no clue and has to act after the enemies. (I'll announce when you can act.)

Pets, mounts and familiars act with their masters' initiative.

The south side of the path is blocked by a rock face. The upper area is heavy undergrowth and difficult terrain. Trees block the view through them and bushes give concealment.

This is a customized map. You can change it! If you e.g. cast a fireball, there will be burnt trees and bushes at the next map.

Clueless
right-aligned image

Zook charges up his pea-shooter and anxiously watches the sky as Declan ascends into the tree and recovers the young girl's remains. The dress and the bones bring back memories from his last trip to Cold Valley. It was eerily like this one, a full party of six adventurers rode out. However, Jaeger and Zook were the only two who returned between those who deserted and those who died.

Unfortunately, Zook's reminiscing about past adventures and dangers left the artificer surprised by current dangers.

Jon Jon was in agreeance with Declan, though arguably, his attentiveness was not the greatest. Still, with the woman secure, he had continued at the forefront of the group, when he heard the snap of a twig... he turned his head to see two figures emerge from the foliage around them... rotting flesh, ancient decay... he made a snap decision, moving to step between the wagon and the creature to his immediate left. The goal was to keep people safe, after all.

His blade spun about with surprising speed... he was at home up close with his foes. His blade hopefully cutting through the creature, though he stayed with one side guarding toward the front of the road, his shield came up to help defend the wagon.

Accepting Prod's request, Declan nods, "agreed. I'm make this as quick as possible." Considering his recent brush with skeletons within the DOOR the warrior takes the briefest of moments to bind the skeleton within the remains of the blue dress. Depositing the body before making a quick sprint after the wagon. Repositioning himself next to Prod, but making no fuss as he understood the man's nervousness. Smiling at the kind words, "thank you. The woman deserves a decent burial, and her loved ones to know her fate." The warm feeling he experiences during a momentary break in the clouds has Declan wondering if or some other deityFharlanghn was watching over their group. He pushes such thoughts to the side. Theological questions were usually best left to more pious individuals than he.

He spots the moment of the figures only a second before the dogs begin to growl and bark. Standing quickly, his right hand draws an arrow from his quiver and nocked. Pulling the string back as takes aim at the creature closest to Jon.

If the party has positioned Stinger Drum in the rearguard in the hopes of him detecting up pursuers, they have misplaced their faith. Though his reserved mien suggests otherwise, the man has none of the patience of a skilled outdoorsman. He spends the first hours of the journey with his head down, to create the optimal slope of his hat for channeling water off of it. When Declan retrieves the skeleton, Stinger takes only a passing interest; he uses the pause to shake off some of the wet and to check his weapon. Once in the valley, he seems more alert, but not for dangers. Stinger can be seen studying the rock face through breaks in the trees.

On excursions outside towns and cities, Stinger has become reliant on his animals – Wyatt, to keep moving over difficult terrain, and Ringo, to warn of danger. This time, the dog lets his master down. Ringo only lifts his head when the barking begins. Stinger’s eyes follow, but too slowly.

The song in Oodiliana’s heart had been too loud for the trail, so rather than sing and play her flute she imagined these things as she juked and danced and twirled along the caravan. Ever smiling, her frequent posturing was more than practice, it was uninhibited expression.

But as the owlin was twirling, her staff came down at the edge of the forest by a tree. Out of a shrub shambled a foul-skinned zombie with a wide gaping toothy snarl. With a ”Yip!” Oodiliana instinctively let out a blast of necrotic energy as a ghostly spectral hand rushed out to grab the offending zombie. Meanwhile, the sorceress hopped up into the air as, in a flash of glitter, she nearly doubled in size.

”There be zombies!” exclaimed the owlin, spreading her arms and staff in a grand gesture encompassing the grove. As she was not entirely certain where they all were, it felt prudent to alert everyone to the ubiquitous presence of the offensive spirits.

DMOC:After 6 days, I allow myself to continue. Syrota Hittebarn can act now, after the attackers, no need for rolls.

Ambush in the valley
When the undead break through the undergrowth, Zook, Stinger and Syrota are all three too inattentive to react before the attackers. However, Prod and Miguel are also too slow and more than busy to keep the horses under control.

Jon steps to the closest undead and his silvered blade cuts deep into the twisted body, leaving a deep wound. A black liquid pours out of it. Prod's fighting dog attacks, too,
Dice Bite attack:
d20+3sh11 (4)+3 Total = 7
(7), but misses.

Declan reacts quickly and shots an arrow, but the sudden movement of the wagon makes him miss his target.

Oodiliana casts a spell and the undead tumbles under the impact, but continues walking, until it is attacked by Miguel's fighting dog
Dice Bite attack:
d20+3sh11 (1)+3 Total = 4
(4). The undead stops, but the dog misses. Oodiliana This is marked by the blue frame.hops into the air and enlarges herself.

The undead swineherd attacks Jon with his staff
Dice Melee attack:
d20+2sh19 (17)+2 Total = 19
(19) and leaves a small wound
Dice damage:
d4+1 (3)+1 Total = 4
(4). Although the wound is barely noticeable, Jon Maximum HP reduced temporarily by 4 HP until long rest or divine restoration.feels his life drained.
The female shepherd swings her crook at the fighter, too,
Dice Melee attack:
d20+2sh19 (16)+2 Total = 18
(18) and the blow nearly hits the brave fighter.

In the middle of the caravan, the third undead attacks the dog with her claw hands
Dice Melee attack:
d20+2sh14 (10)+2 Total = 12
(12), but the leather armor protects the animal from any harm.

DMOC:Everyone can act in any sequence.

Don't feel limited by the features of the map.
