"Stinger" Drum, 2L Fighter Custom Lineage (Dwarf/Halfing)Crossbow Expert | Archery Style | Second Wind 1/1 | Action Surge 1/1

left-aligned image

Stinger issues a little grunt of disapproval of the ambush, then hurriedly assesses the situation. A crypt guardian? No, Stinger realizes with some disappointment, this thing isn't even armed.

Stinger can't make out the front of the caravan, but he concludes that they are similarly occupied. He prods Wyatt a few meters forward, to get a line on the nearby thing. When he reaches the rear of the nearby wagon, Stinger levels his little crossbow and fires a bolt 28 to hit, 6 piercinginto his target. "Ms. Hittebarn," he calls out to the thin and minimally armored woman at the front of the wagon, "you may want to retreat from this creature before it forces a greater intimacy." Having already reloaded, Stinger puts another bolt 18 to hit, 8 piercinginto the undead, then turns to withdraw himself. "I will likewise insist on some space between us."

Back at his original position, Stinger speaks more simply to his dog: "Ringo, guard!"

The undead attacking one of Prod's and Miguel's guard dogs spurred Zook into action. Zook touched three of the stones in his pouch of stones and attacked
Dice Magic Stone attack :
1d20+7 (2)+7 Total = 9
(9) with his magic stone
Dice Magic Stone Damage :
1d6+5 (4)+5 Total = 9
(9) the undead attacking the rear dog. Although, the stone sailed past the undead.

Zook hoped that Betty was a stable mount, as the Artificer thought, "I'd rather be riding Jaeger."

Jon
right-aligned image
Jon moved fluidly as he found himself hemmed in. He felt the impact from the staff on his chest, with a soft grunt... though he winced as he felt warmth leave him... he turned his body to deflect the next blow meant for him, eyes narrowing, his weapon dancing in front of him again. He hoped he could keep the monsters focused more on himself up here... he could hear fighting coming from further down the line... and for just a moment, he thought he saw a very large owl... he couldn't let himself be distracted, however. His body shifting as he moved to strike with his silvery sword glinting in the light from above, while turning to bring his shield up, that being more matte black with no emblem... a reminder of what he had now... Nothing. He shifted one foot, moving closer to the horse and dog to better protect them.

Syrota Hittebarn
right-aligned image

Declan's decision to stop, in order to cut down the already-decayed body, left Syrota open-mouthed. Her reaction to the sight, for she could not miss it, had been the polar opposite - that it suggested the urgency of moving on as rapidly as they could manage. There was no doubt it was brave, but to her mind it was also dangerous, and entirely pointless. What additional indignity could there be now, after the poor unfortunate had already been left there to be picked clean by the birds? As much as Syrota tried not to, she could not help but contrast Declan's seeming determination to help someone already long-dead with the attitude the citizenry of West Haven had taken towards her and her fellow urchins. How many of her friends might well have lived but for the absence of minor kindnesses far less burdensome than this?

No sooner had she experienced the thought, than Syrota regretted it. It ain't right to 'ang the lack of good in th'world around the neck o'those who are tryin.' As much as that goodly impulse of Declan's might have been dangerous in the moment, she realized, the world was a better place for him having had it. Besides, as her street friend Artarius had always told her - it wasn't a bad idea if you got away with it.

__________________________________________

The wagon had trundled on, and after a while Syrota had relaxed just a little. Her grip on her shortbow remained firm, but marginally less vice-like than it had been. She even worked up the courage to attempt to engage Prod in small talk, though she quickly got the impression that that wasn't the Half-Orc's thing. For a while, she even managed to amuse herself by looking for portentous shapes in the clouds above, though the best she saw looked a little like a goblet, which simply left her wondering if the gods were mocking her for the previous night.

Syrota noticed the rustling from the trees Initiative 21immediately, but having never drawn her bow in anger against anything larger than a rat before, she felt utterly unequipped to take the initiative. Instead, she hesitated. It was only for a second, but it must have seemed like an age to the others, for the one who called himself Stinger had already called out to her, urging retreat. Not the worst advice in the world. She just had one small matter to attend to first.

Directly in front of her, Miguel's dog lunged at the throat of the white-haired undead... or rather, where its throat would be, were it a living thing rather than a foul parody of one. The nightmarish creature pulled its torso backward, easily evading the canine's jaws, but exposing its sternum to Syrota in an inviting manner. The urchin levelled her bow, and let an arrow fly toward the melee. Without waiting to see if it hit, she did as she'd been advised, and made her way around to the rear of Prod's wagon.

Declan
right-aligned image

Oodiliana's warning had Declan look closer at the creature he failed to hit with an arrow. These things again... so soon. As much as remaining in the wagon was the safer choice, he couldn't leave a brother-in-arms outnumbered. Letting out a grunt of frustration, Declan tosses his family bow into the back of the wagon, and the fighter jumped down to the hoping the dog wouldn't confuse him for another undeadground beside the wagon. His hand grabs the hilt as he draws his longsword. Making his way around the guard dog, he clutches the blade in both hands and brings the sharp steel down on the undead creature.

Oodiliana looked into the eyes of the advancing zombie which attacked the poor dog and saw a vortex of vitriol in place of a soul. These were soul-less, evil creatures either constructed by an evil mage or damned to walk the earth for eternity feeding on the helpless.

The owlin would have no part of it. With a flick of a claw, she ushered forth a bolt of fire that looked to have been carelessly aimed. The sorceresses’ eyes widened and, calling upon the tides of chaos, she waved her fingers in a gesture that corrected the trajectory of the errant fire missile.

Though it was not a very damaging spell, it held potential and was something she was trying to master.

Ambush in the valleyStinger acts first and after approaching on his mule, he shots two bolts into the closes undead. Both bolts hit, but the effect seems to be less than normal.

Zook throws a magic stone at the same undead, but misses.

In the front, Jon swings his blade against the damaged undead and nearly cuts the former shepherd in two. Bones break and muscles are torn by the silvered blade. The undead screams in pain or desperation. Jon moves closer to the dog and the horse, which makes the undead swineherd swing his staff at Jon
Dice Melee attack:
d20+2sh19 (15)+2 Total = 17
(17), but the wood bounces off the armor.

When Syrota sends her arrow into the undead, she also notices that the hit which would normally kill a human just causes few more damage than a heavy thud.

Declan jumps down the wagon and into the heavy undergrowth to attack the damaged undead. His blade cuts powerfully into the twisted body, but is only leaving a small wound.

From the sky above, Oodiliana casts a firebolt onto the undead, hitting the next hit destroys itundead monster which tumbles. Miguel's fighting dog attacks bravely again, but as futile as before.
Dice Bite attack:
d20+3sh11 (2)+3 Total = 5
(5).

In the front, Prod's fighting dog attacks, too,
Dice Bite attack:
d20+3sh11 (9)+3 Total = 12
(12) and tears a piece out of the rotten flesh
Dice Bite damage:
d6+1 (2)+1 Total = 3
(3). The undead shepherd screams again and collapses in the ground. Immediately, the corpse dissolves and black liquid and dark slime seep in the ground. A broken skull and with broken bones and some rotten clothes are the only things left.

Now, the white-haired undead attacks the dog with her claw hands
Dice Melee attack:
d20+2sh14 (8)+2 Total = 10
(10), but again, the dog is too fast to be hit.

The undead swineherd follows Jon and attacks him with his staff again
Dice Melee attack:
d20+2sh19 (4)+2 Total = 6
(6) but the weapons does not even come close to the fighter.

"Prot'ct my dog!" Miguel, the half-orc, shouts angry when he sees Stinger and Syrota retreating. "Yo' cow'rds! We pa' yo' for this!"

DMOC:Everyone can act in any sequence.

Pets, mounts and familiars act with their masters' initiative.

The south side of the path is blocked by a rock face. The upper area is heavy undergrowth and difficult terrain. Trees block the view through them and bushes give concealment.

This is a customized map. You can change it! If you e.g. cast a fireball, there will be burnt trees and bushes at the next map. Don't feel limited by the features of the map.

Syrota Hittebarn
right-aligned image

Syrota heard Miguel's angry words. While she didn't exactly like being called a coward, she'd been called far worse in her time. The Half-Elf emerged from her position behind her employer's wagon, and, creeping forward, lined up another arrow. The white-haired abomination didn't appear to notice Syrota taking aim until the very last moment, when its head turned toward her - just in time for the arrow's shaft to embed itself in the skeletal creature's eye socket.

Syrota carried on walking in a measured, unhurried manner. As she reached the side of Miguel's furry friend, she allowed herself a quick, furtive look back at the Half-Orc, meeting his gaze in a manner which seemed to ask: Worth the money, eh?

"Prot'ct my dog!" Miguel, the half-orc, shouts

Zook did not want to get into melee combat, particularly with an undead who looked bigger and looked stronger than he was. Still, Zook didn't want to get crosswise with Miguel. This was his second trip to Cold Valley with Miguel and it was likely that Zook would be taking another trip.

As Zook nudged Betty forward, he called out, "I got the Dog, you two focus on taking out the undead."

Zook rode Betty next to the wagon. He stopped her far enough to be out of the Undead's reach, before the GnomishA Artificer dismounted. He flicked another stone at the creature,
Dice Magic Stone Attack:

"Ha Beastie. I'm the one that shot you." Zook taunted the undead, hoping that the creature would target him, not the dog.

Slide your foot, don't step... if you step, your opponent can unbalance you while one foot is in the air, the soft, yet strict voice of Yasmin echoed in his head as his foot slid across the ground, his sword slashing out at the swineherder. He felt his weapon cut deep... Be mindful, always, of even the angle of your shield, the face can stop an attack cold, but the edges can redirect it... His shield came up in one fluid motion. He wasn't leaving any openings for the creature to get through, to hit him, or anyone else, now that the first one was down, he was going to make sure this one's head left its shoulders...

His eyes moved, only briefly, toward Prod's concern... his dog... if this creature fell like a good monster, he'd run back to help out, he supposed.

Ambush in the valleySyrota shots a well-aimed arrow into the white-haired undead. The arrow hits it into the right eye, piercing through what was a brain and the black tip leaves a few inches via the left ear. The undead turn the head to Syrota, so it can see its killer and gives her a strange, confused glance before it collapses on the ground and melting into a black, slimy mess with an arrow-pierced, white-haired skull on top.
Syrota quickly moves closer to the undead to impress Miguel, but this lacks bravery, as the puddle does not attack anyone anymore.

With the second undead destroyed and the way cleared, also Stinger goes into attack mode and rides with his mastiff behind Prod's wagon to shoot two bolts into the last undead. But not without mumbling a snotty answer to Miguel, first, who roll his eyes behind the halfling-dwarf's back.

Zook follows this comrade's example and throws a magic stone at the last undead. The stone hits and leaves a clear wound at the shoulder.

In the front, Declan and Jon watches the undead swineherd tumbling under the impacts of bolts and stones - and they don't give it a break to act. Declan moves carefully over the black mess of bones and slimes to avoid slipping. He neither want to touch what is left from the undead not does he feel the staff of the undead swineherd. So, he swings his blade and cuts deep in the rotten flesh of the undead's right leg.

The undead swineherd tumbles which triggers Jon. He has been practicing these movement a thousand times within the last years. Maybe even more. Block, step, attack! Block, step, attack! Without a moment of hesitation, his reflexes block the staff with the shield, turning his body to the right, then let his right foot step aside a two feet and swing back to the left with the rising sword. The silvered blade hits the neck and beheads the undead without losing velocity. The skull spins around and disappears in the dense undergrowth. The headless body shivers, makes a farting sound and falls to the side.

Everyone is silent for a moment, expecting more undead breaking through the undergrowth, but there is no more sound and no other undead.

It's Prod who breaks the silence by asking loudly. "I'm not expert in owlbears, but these were none, I would say."

Miguel jumps off the car and pads his dog. "Go'd b'y! Go'd b'y! Well d'ne!" he praises the dog loud enough for the ones around to hear. "You 're w'rth ev'ry s'ngle co'n!" The mastiff's tail wags the big dog with excitement.
DM's notes:End of combat! You won! Congratulation!

Everyone is free to act as they want.

With a flick of his longsword, he scattered the creature's ichor across the swineherder's body. Normally he'd use his foe's shirt to further wipe the blood off it... but he wasn't sure the wisdom of touching such a foul creature, even in this state. He used a nearby leafy plant to do the job. He paused to listen to their surroundings, weapon remaining at the ready.

"No, they do not seem like Owlbears in the slightest, but that's not to say there isn't any in the area... if rumors say an owlbear has been causing issues, it may be these horrors that agitated them... or worse..." he nodded toward the monster he had beheaded. "Are you familiar with any shepherds in the area? If there truly is such a beast out here... it could also be one of these things..." he mused. "Mere speculation at this point, but one of those two don't seem outside the realm of possibilities..." he said simply, wincing at the weakness he felt from the minor hit he took. It didn't hurt too badly, but he felt some of his strength leave him as a result... Thankfully he remained a bastion.

"Is anyone else hurt?" he asked the group.

Declan considered using a leafy plant similar to Jon, but choice instead to use the sleeve of a spare shirt from his pack to clean the ick off his blade. "I'm unharmed," glancing back down the line in consideration of the others in their group. Sheathing his sword once more.

"If we're all okay, we should get moving." He climbs back onto the wagon beside Prod, lightly chuckling, "and very observant. Owlbears, as the name suggests, are much more bear shaped. Mind my asking, how do you know it's an owlbear feeding on sheep and shepherd?" Twisting in the seat, he reaches behind himself to collect his longbow once again.
