Hello! This feels like an odd time to be introducing myself - since Christmas Eve is when the celebrations happen in my part of the world - but the in-laws have gone home and the kids are asleep so I'll write while the going's good.

I was introduced to D&D 5e some years ago, and found roleplaying and especially DMing satisfied a creative urge I didn't know I had. Sadly family life and the pandemic have put paid to both my face-to-face and online games... and yet the hunger remains...

So I thought I'd try PbP! I did a fair bit of text-based roleplaying many years ago (before I really knew that tabletop RPGs were different from the videogame kind), but from my cursory poking-about this site seems a lot better organized. And I like this little guy

Welcome Flying Bat Megafox! You’re definitely in good company here. A great way to get started with this site is to do a new player solo game. If I were a more responsible member of the welcome committee, I’d have a nice link for you. Unfortunately, I’ve yet to prepare the link for easy copy/pasta and I’m on my phone currently. But someone here must have that link handy. They’ll be around shortly, I’m sure.

Hello Loun! Thanks for the tip - I'm somewhat familiar with BBcode from other online adventures (roleplaying-adjacent, now I come to think of it), but I'm certainly not above a bit of shameless theft!

Always seems to be plenty of interest in 5e games here (myself included) but dont let that be a reason to not consider some of the other exquisite delights this place offers. I fully admit to be being a rules-poly and love the excuse to buy new books.

 

• New game adverts are like the weather in that there might be a pattern and overall consistency to them, but like the weather droughts and floods can and do occur.
• Real Life is also like the weather so leave yourself time for the expected and unexpected, don't overextend yourself and the same applies to those you play with.
• Games can get lots of applications and you will be passed over, treat it as a bad roll and move on
• The solo game is a great intro - do one. You can also join other games early on but be upfront about your experience
• Some real soloists play Ironsworn Give it a whirl...
• Wow - even more free fun what are you waiting for
• What even more gaming opportunities
• Give XP when you see or read something you like (the scales icon on the top right of every post)
• The staff are kind but human so don't ignore the rules, smackdowns can be public

Howdy Flying Fox Mega Bat,

That's quite a mouthful. It sounds like you are a fairly experienced player. I'm a D&D guy too (5e now but my favorite is AD&D) who enjoys fantasy, but I have played many other RPG systems. If you are looking for a place to role play, and not just roll play, this is it. Well, there is some incredible role playing going on here. I thought I was a a pretty good story teller, but I have been put to shame by the quality of some of the players...and I have learned a lot. I sent a link to one such site I've been lucky enough to be a part of below. Of course, there are plenty of hack and slash games too, so take your pick.

To get some PbP experience you'll want to check out a solo game. Even if you have PbP experience each site is a bit different.

This is a place where the people are welcoming, where the games are interesting, and where generally they only expect you to post a few times a week. I've been playing D&D for a very long time and I thought I've seen it all, but this site has some amazing games going on. I've been playing (storytelling as much as rolling) for a bit over two years now in a game that has been going on continuously for four decades, started tabletop and moved online two decades ago. It's set in an alternate Europe where the worlds of Tolkien and Howard existed in ages past. So there is a hint of LOTR and a hint of Conan in it and since it's set in an alt Europe it somehow feels familiar.

This is just one example and there are other great campaigns on RPGX. You should take some time to "stroll around" the site and see if anything catches your eye.

nooo I can't possibly start collecting books for OTHER systems too. Where will it all end? Although Ironsworn does look interesting... and it is free...

Thanks also for the link to solo games Ildrahil! I'm going to read up about some of the other systems on offer there, and maybe step outside my comfort zone a little. FATE, Traveller, and 13th Age are all new to me... there's a game called Lancer I've been wanting to try as well, does anyone have any experience of that?

I'm doing well, thanks for asking! pseudenim above linked me to the (a?) big West Marches game here on the site, and I've just finished applying with a witchy artificer. I've never made an artificer before and I got a bit stuck on her background so it's taken me a while

I've also had the New Player Solo Game recommended, but I've been dithering about what system to apply for.
