greetings !

Hi everyone,

Been playing TTRPGs for a while (started with D&D 3.5) and since I am the forever GM in real life, I'm looking for some moore relaxed playing through play by post !

I've unfortunately had negative experiences through PbP, all games I participated in just stopped from lack of motivation from either the GMs or multiple players. I'm hoping that this community is a bit more consistent, though I completely understand that life happens !

I'm looking forward to checking the games that are recruiting, hoping to find more narrative-driven ones instead of combat ones.

I'm familiar with many systems, and am currently GMing Scion (2e), looking forward to playing with many of you !

PS : I love that this is on a forum, it brings me back !

Welcome to RPG Crossing.

I highly recommend checking out the New Player Solo Game in the main forum's Solo Games/New Gamers folder. There are 13th Age, Call of Cthulhu, DnD (3.5, 4, 5), FATE, Pathfinder (1), and Travelers many game systems to pick from and once signed up, you will be paired with a patient and helpful GM that can help show you the ropes of how to do things at this site. They can also be an excellent person to ask any questions to while you are getting up to speed on things.

All these things can be done with the Hero System. Champions, Dark Champions, Star Hero, and Monster Hunter International (that is based on the novels of the same name). So, ever wanted to be a superhero fighting crime to make the world a safer place? Or don a mask and make the criminals fear your brand of justice? Or go where no man has gone before and explore the outer reaches of the known universe and beyond? Or have you ever wanted to join the Monster Hunter International (MHI) team to track down things that go bump in the night while the Monster Control Bureau (MCB) does everything they can to keep those things a secret and dreading the day you have to deal with the Special Task Force Unicorn (STFU) teams from the MCB?

With regards to games ending prematurely, unfortunately this site is not immune to the same behavior. Saying that, there are also several games that have been running for years. There are many seasoned players here, so I would say that your chances of finding a game that last more than a couple of months is pretty good. As far as finding a game that is more role playing instead of roll playing, I would say you have a better than average chance of finding that sort of game here. In fact, there are even sections that are dedicated just to story writing.

Anyway, enjoy your time here and let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks !

I've just posted an application for a GURPS game, we'll see how it goes. Unfortunately I've had my fair share of bad 5e games online, so I'm now quite biased against that system and simply ignoring the games of said system. (purely personal. If you enjoy 5e, the more power to you !)

I like that !

In any case, I'll be taking my time with things. There's a lot to read around. I'll definitely ask around if I have any questions !

Thank you again for the warm welcome.

I highly recommend that you also do the new player solo game. It will greatly help with the learning curve on how things work on this site, and you get to meet a wonderful volunteer who you will have as a contact if you ever have questions.

As far as avoiding 5e, I completely understand. I started out with that because that seems to be one of the most popular systems here. That led me to Pathfinder and eventually to Starfinder, which led me to Shadowrunner. In the end, the very first system I learned when I was younger is still my favorite, so I am starting to try to build a community around the Hero System (Champions, Star Hero, etc.) After getting a few games under my belt, I have learned to be much more selective in what I want to invest my time in. (Not to mention that my free time seems to be in shorter supply these days, which is forcing me to cut back to just a few select games.)

I have contemplated learning GURPS since it is similar to the Hero System. Who knows, maybe one of these days I will just jump in. Anyway, hope you have good success with your GURPS game.

ah, I've played a couple of games of Hero system, it was always great fun ! I used to be part of a club and every week I'd play different systems giving me a very broad knowledge of many systems, but without any depth (since I'd create a character during the session). I even have trouble sticking with a system as a GM ! I've just started GMing scion, and I want to buy L5R and GM that.

I did post in the FATE Core solo play thread since my last message. It is, as you said, a good way to meet someone and learn "hands-on" how things work.

Good job. I am sure you will also enjoy the experience.

BTW, love the username you picked out. I have three girls and for each one, I suggested Pi as their middle name and was vetoed all three times. I guess 3.14 is what most people will recognize, so probably better than picking the digits after that, like pi159265.

Which reminds me of a joke:

What does the number 3 and apples have in common?

Haha,

well "pi" is usually too short of a username to be used as-is.

but Pi is also my IRL nickname. I've had it since 2008, I had to disguise myself as a smurf for an event, and I had a blue shirt with a big π sign, so I was "smurf Pi" and it stayed : even my in-laws call me "pi" and for Xmas, I have stockings with the greek letter π on them.

I like the joke !

Welcome to RPG Crossing, pi314! PBP is the kind of long-term gaming that can't help but be interrupted by life sometimes, but I hope that you will find what you are looking for. There are certainly games that go on actively for years here. Have fun exploring!

Howdy pi314,

What a witty username! Truth in lending, I'm a D&D player to my core. Lately it's been 5e, which I like a lot but my favorite version is AD&D, although at one time or another I've played a whole host of RPGs. It's been years since I played PF...but we have a little bit of everything here and lot of some games, D&D 5e and PF to be specific. Do you prefer games that tell stories or hack and slash? What is your favorite character class and race if you have one? Brie or feta?

This is a great place to scratch your RPG itch and interact with some great DMs and players. There is some incredible role playing going on here. I thought I was a pretty good story teller, but I have been put to shame by the quality of many of the players...and I have learned a lot. I sent a link to one such site below that has been going on continuously for over 40 years and has been only for close to twenty. I've been lucky to be a part of it for three years...so yes, there are some games that have longevity here. You should check out the Hall of Fame games over the years for others.

As Kenjitsu said, you may want to check out a solo game. Even if you have PbP experience each site is a bit different.

This is a place where the people are welcoming, where the games are interesting, and where generally they only expect you to post a few times a week. I've been playing D&D for a very long time and I thought I've seen it all, but this site has some amazing games going on. I've been playing (storytelling as much as rolling) for a bit over two years now in a game that has been going on continuously for four decades, started tabletop and moved online two decades ago. It's set in an alternate Europe where the worlds of Tolkien and Howard existed in ages past. So there is a hint of LOTR and a hint of Conan in it and since it's set in an alt Europe it somehow feels familiar.

This is just one example and there are other great campaigns on RPGX. You should take some time to "stroll around" the site and see if anything catches your eye.

I hope to see you around on the boards.

welcome!

As others have said, life happens here, just as much as... real life. Games come and go, some go for years, others... not so long. One good thing is, there's generally time/scope to get into a couple games, so... even if one goes away, you still have others to stay busy, and you can look around for a new game.

Hope you have fun. I know I have, and I've been around a middling time.

Happy gaming!

thank you everyone for the warm welcome !

@Ildrahil, I'm definitely more of a story person. Fights need steaks stakes for things to matter.

as for race & class, I don't really know. I guess for D&D I go for martials usually because I feel maintaining a daily spell list is very much a pain in the butt.

In general I like to play young adults in games so I have less adulting to do compared to IRL. xD Though political intrigue, especially from an underdog position, is mmmmm. *chef's kiss*.
