Thank you, CE2, and of course Sed and Magrok. No big deal and I appreciate your sentiments.

My normal sig, along with much of the kwalitee in my gaming, is on hold for now. I've just started a huge new job, am filling out paperwork relating to clearances, will be required to obtain new professional certifications, and am trying to move out of my roach-infested apartment, all the while navigating my youngest daughter's 9th birthday, which is the day after Halloween, and various new work-related challenges. My posts are shorter, and--if possible--crappier than usual.

Oh man, I was kinda expecting that link to take us to a photo from the movie "Joe's Apartment", but that's a lot of roaches regardless!!
But don't worry mate, I used to live in a place that had a roach problem like that too! It's pretty nice not having them around anymore. Good luck on the getting the hell out of there... ![]() And kwalitee is only what you make of it. So no worries, we'll be fine! ![]()

If I may interject and offer some advice:

I cannot agree more Toad'. I'm already thinking about it...and dreading the sight of one of the little crawly bastards in my new place!
BSR, neither...northern Virginia! Hah, threw you! You are not alone in underestimating my excessive mobility. However, I hope and plan to stay in this area for the next 9 years. We'll see what the fates have in store! The job: The position is with an IT consulting firm that works at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). There are like 27 different Institutes, and I'm at the National Institute of Allergies & Infectious Diseases. (yum!) NIAID for short. My company has plenty of other clients besides, but NIH is my focus. Basically, NIH has a lot of computer systems: the regular kind for desktop computing, but also heavy hardware for clinical trials and the like. My employer (NETE) has a long standing contract to assist with running various projects relating to these systems. There are NETE IT Project Managers in NIH (NIAID). There's also a Program Management Office, which is responsible for setting the standards and practices by which all those projects will be run. Except the NIAID Program Mgmt Office doesn't exist. It'll be my responsibility to work with the NIH guy in charge of it...and to determine and advocate the project management practices that all the PMs will use on all the IT projects. That is huge. I've never worked on that scale. In the next 6 months I'll need to: get my Project Management Professional certification (a 4-hour exam); become an expert in some software project management technique called RUP--the Rational Unified Process; gain the trust and acceptance of the higher-ups at NIAID; start implementing NIAID-wide standards; and oh yeah, run the development effort for a small and yet-to-be-determined software product that NETE will create in-house. There will not be a lot of free time. I think there will be a lot less time to spend with the girls, but what time we do have will be very high quality, because all that work will be well compensated and Tess, Carly and I can eat at the nice restaurants now. See first-run movies. Go to plays and things. And there's all the other stuff life brings...what with the roaches, I'm breaking my lease and moving this Saturday. Who wants to move right when they start a new job?! And the motorcycle needs a heap of engine work I've been putting off and putting off for the past 2,000 miles. And and and...Ah well: this is life. To struggle, strive, and to learn!

Never, ever tell people what you do for a living, no matter what you do it will usually sound boring. So lie a bit. I, for instance, work at a Arctic boot camp where I beat Polar Bears into shape and wrestle Killer Whales. It's what we do here in Iceland. Yup. ![]() |

Oh and good luck. It sounds...uh..interesting. ![]() No worries though. My job is probably 10x more boring. I am nothing but a glorified accountant. Last edited by BraveSirRobin; Oct 23rd, 2008 at 09:01 AM. |

I get to tell people what to do and organize them as I see fit.
It may come as a surprise, but I get satisfaction out of that kind of thing... ![]() Cedric, I believe what you do in Iceland right now mainly consists of going around and asking other countries for huge sums of money so your vast aluminum refineries can keep the geothermally-powered lights on. ![]() ![]() Colatine! I'm in Falls Church...

No but...you see there's these Polar Bears... and Mad Killer Whales....and you know... stuff.... really I...I....
Damnation. But yeah the economy here is hung over at the moment and no one wants to pay for the party. So it falls upon me and the rest of "peasantry" to pay for it. |
