Recently I read Good Omens, Neverwhere, and Ice Song, and when I'm done with Age of Fire, I'll probably read American Gods.

Computational Complexity (for work - stochastic effects and technology to utilize them are the bread and butter of modern radiology)
Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen (hard to take seriously, but a fun read if you enjoy running)
The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl (anecdotal history of one of the worst anthropogenic disaster in U.S. history)
Fragmentation in Semi-Arid and Arid Landscapes: Consequences for Human and Natural Systems (interesting read on unintended consequences and the unfathomable complexity of Nature)

...the last fiction I read was The Iliad and Heart of Darkness, both for the umpteenth time.

Charcuterie: The Craft of Salting, Smoking, and Curing by Michael Ruhlman and Brian Polcyn.

One of the best written cookbooks i have read in a while. Everything's presented knowledgeably and concisely with a good mind for the science, art and tradition of preservation. Highly recommended for anyone that enjoys food.

"Ghost Empire -- How the French Almost Conquered North America" by Philip Marchand.

It's an entertaining mixture of history and travelogue. However, on the simple basis of numbers, I don't think the French could have come anywhere close to rivaling the British (or later the Americans) since the ratio of British to French settlers (feet on the ground) was overwhelmingly in the favour of the British.

By any chance, does he explain why he wore a Soviet commissar's uniform for the cover picture of that book? I don't get the joke.

I haven't finished it yet (So much schoolwork! I'm only on chapter 3). But I am pretty sure it is very implied if you have read 1985, or have a basic knowledge of the Soviet revolution. Its a really funny book though so I recomend you pick it up if your interested!

Hmm, maybe I'll just have to pick it up for myself. I can't think of a favorable attribute I'd attach to Soviet commissars. Thanks anyways.

I'm reading Drood right now by Dan Simmons. It's about Charles Dickens at the end of his life and the unfinished book he was writing called The Mystery of Edwin Drood. In this book Drood is someone (or something) that haunted the writer, an evil creature that lived in the underground slums of London. There's drug addiction, murder, and cults. And all of this is being told from a fellow writer of Dickens by the name of Wilkie Collins who is a drug addict... so I'm still not sure if this story is really happening or it's all just an opium dream that Collins conjured up. Really cool book.

I'm currently reading this book entitled Evil Genes. It's all about proposing a link between epigenetic conditions and antisocial behavior. ie, is there a Hitler gene? and such
