I'm reading Plato and a Platypus Walk Into a Bar: Understanding Philosophy Through Jokes by Tom Cathcart and Daniel Klein. Oh, and Professional Cooking 6th Edition by Wayne Gisslen. Though that one is less for sheer enjoyment. Both were christmas presents.

I read the first one this past year and I liked it but I didn't love it. I can't seem to put my finger on why. Did you find that they get better or about the same?

Hard to say at the moment. I'm enjoying the characters and storylines so far though they aren't masterpieces by any stretch of the imagination. I do find they serve the purpose and style they were written in: light, fun, easy to read and fast paced meshing of detective noir and fantasy. I'll have to lean with each is more of the same with different villains, crisises, surprises so far, but I'm only halfway through the third book right now.

I'm currently reading a book I got for Christmas, entitled Leviathan. It's set in an alternate history, where Darwin not only discovered evolution, but also pioneered genetic alteration. Now there's a divide between two warring peoples of different opinions, The Clankers who use mechanics, and the Darwinists who use genetically-engineered animals for war.

Both good series...es.

I'm currently wanting to read Green by Ted Dekker and First Lord's Fury by Jim Butcher. Until then I may grab Dragons of Hourglass Mage from the library.

Also going to go through C.S.Lewis' Space trilogy at some point.

I'm going back to work on some classics that they felt weren't necessary to cover while I was in High School. *Grumble*

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There
The Picture of Dorian Grey
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Also will attempt to trudge through a little more of the Divine Comedy, but that is extremely hard reading so I do it in small bits.

I am currently reading Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince
Which it turns out was more a series of letters than a single codified book.
I had a bit of trouble with the slightly stilted language of the translation (done in the 60's) but now that I have the flow of it it's a bit better.
I can see why it was a so contentious a book considering that during the time and in the area it was written a mans personal honor and reputation was everything.

The version I'm reading also goes into quite a bit of detail on Machiavelli's life and background, which gives some insight into other reasons why it was so inflamitory. Machiavelli was a politician who wholeheartedly supported his peoples system of government, when a turn of bad luck saw him outed from that system for a time he sent "The Prince" to a foreign king (france). Not only was the king of France his peoples enemy/friend/enemy but the book advocated nearly the opposite of the system Machiavelli had spent years supporting and building his career in.

Actually when I was picking them up I got a little annoyed. The classics set that all of them are from doesn't contain Faust. I was sort of hoping to have all the classics in one set but now it doesn't look like thats going to happen. Too bad all matching books looks great on a shelf.
