Your eyes first found a hint of the tattoos on his arm when he reach for his cup of ale on the table, making his sleeve slide up a bit. They were of small but snaking and vicious looking text that coiled up and around his left hand, wrought with writing unlike the blank palm he had previously offered to you. The fingers on his inked hand were almost jet black with tiny, crowded words and his fingernails were stained the same shade. It was certainly no wonder why Sam had specifically mentioned such a detail. Then, taking notice of his garb, you notice that they are rather high quality--something of casual wear for nobility--underneath a layer of dust and dirt which no doubt came from his travels and the beating he had received from the guards earlier.
"The Gate? I suppose that's of no great surprise though," Vadimas said partially to himself. "Have you ever had the pleasure of visiting the capital?" He closed his journal. Last edited by TheDrakemund; Jul 26th, 2014 at 05:00 AM. |

"Unfortunately, no," I replied. "I may head there in the near future, however."

"Ah..." His eyes slid to you, electric-blue knives that seemed intent on cutting. "And what is your business with this humble traveller, Dr. Warzick? I know you sent the indiscreet lad to look for me."

I laughed. "Yes, he isn't the most subtle of fellows," I said, "but he is useful. Anyway, I am an alchemist by trade, taking my studies abroad, as the Gate gets rather dry."

"The Gate? Dry?" He gave a curt, mocking laugh at your words. "It barely holds back the flood with it's leaks and cracks." He ran a hand through his silver hair. "But the king could certainly use a reliable, skilled alchemist in his city though. Too many of the alchemist and blacksmith's guilds would see the crown on the head of his younger brother, power hungry warmonger that the young boy is. "

"Trust me," I said. "An alchemist has naught to do in that region." I paused. "But why are you concerned with the king's affairs?"

"... One could say that I'm something of a friend to Andrias, I suppose," Vadimas shrugged, "though he would openly deny that fact. It isn't good for his image to be known as close to non-tieflings who come from Aasimar territory."

I nodded. "So was that line about a needed alchemist a tease or a job offering?" I asked.

"That," he flexed his hand, tired from all the writing he had been doing, "would depend on why you are so far north, especially having come from The Gate." He smiled, showing his teeth, and tapped his canine with a charcoal colored finger.

I shrugged. "I left The Gate so I could study mutagens in various locations and see what they could do," I said. "Also, it is hard to maintain a steady job when you're. . ." I lowered my vioce. "Half undead."

Uncaring of your nature, Vadimas stated humorously, "It's even harder when you must tell people that you are not an Aasimar, but from a long line of dragon-slayers instead. I understand the feeling well." He offered a sympathetic shrug. "That is a fare enough reason, I suppose, though I would have thought the necromancers would eagerly welcome one such as yourself into their flock?"

"Does anyone welcome a bastard into their flock?" I asked. "Besides, necromancers do not like vampires. Vampires intimidate them; they are much harder to control than a zombie or skeleton."

"Ah. My apologies, I don't often deal with such things unless I must, as rot disgusts me greatly," he said bluntly.

I chuckled a little. "As a matter of fact, I don't like it much either," I said, ironically. "But anyway, what was that you said about dragon-slayers? Sounds like there are a few exciting stories behind that family line."
