"Well," I asked, "Do you at least know where to look? Because if you don't know what it looks like, then you'll have a hard time finding it unless you have decidedly precise instructions. Otherwise, it could easily be hidden or replaced with a facsimile."

"It will not be hidden nor replaced, as it was meant to be found--the key itself longs to serve it's purpose given to it by some forgotten magics. And I have a fair idea of where it will find it nonetheless." He offered a reassuring smile the no doubt helped him many a time in the king's court.

"Well," I said, "I'll just do what I'm paid for. If you want me to help get this key, then I shall do it. If you decide to fire me after our journey, then I will find work elsewhere. Such is life."

Vadimas closed his eyes for a moment. "I am not honorable, but I am honest. You will have work if you see and wade through what I expect we will."

I shrugged. "In the majority of cases, the two are the same," I said. "All that ought to be expected of an honorable man is the capacity to do what he says he will."

Hours passed, the snow fell long, and night threatened to pull the sun from the sky, but still Vadimas had traveled onward until his horse had come to a stop and yours had followed it's stubborn example. Aggravated, Vadimas had spent a good ten minutes kicking the tired animal in the sides before he himself gave in to the wear of travel. With a few curses muttered under his breath, pale in the cold, he jumped from his temperamental horse and began leading it towards the treeline with a bit of effort. "Are you by chance experienced in camping, Dr. Warzick?" He called back, his tone a pleasant one despite the show of irritation he'd just given.

"Not very much," I admitted. "Most of my work has been done more densely populated areas, or at least among a group. Thus that knowledge has never been incredibly useful in my case. However, I would be more than willing to learn such things."

"Well," Vadimas started with a sigh, "that makes two of us." He pulled piece of bread from his bag and tossed it back to you.

"Well," I said, "I'm sure we will survive. I'm already have dead as it is." I chuckled a little. "But I suppose one of us should keep watch; we're both a bit pale to be in tiefling lands during the night."

Vadimas popped his neck subconsciously. "Shall you start, or I then? I'm indifferent on the matter."

"Well, I am technically your subordinate at the moment," I replied, "I'll take first watch; let you rest just a little."

Vadimas nodded in approval. "Very well." And so he came to a stop just beyond the tree line, safely out of view from any who may look their way. "A fire... would be risky I fear." He patted his horse's neck and it flinched slightly. The frost had no doubt gotten to him with his bluish lips and paling skin. He looked like winter personified with his blue eyes and silver hair shining ever so slightly in the dark of the forested night.

I dismounted my horse. "Well then," I said, "let's settle in. From the look of it, we've still got a bit of travel in front of us."

Vadimas nodded in agreement and pulled fine furs from his bag. "A bit of travel indeed, as we are destined for mountains tomorrow if we make haste." He slowly made his way to the base of a tree and sat down with some effort in his now apparent exhaustion. Tiredly, he held a fur out to you. "Should you get cold if you aren't already." His arm was practically trembling. |
