Plot Summary
PremiseThe year is 2050. Earth is slowly dying, as it has been for some time. Major corporations have finally put people before profit...momentarily and much against their will, as new worldwide laws are choking out their greed in favor of finding a solution to the end of the world. The primary solution of the big corporations that own the rest? Colonize the moon. Sure, there were other solutions tossed around, and some are being done concurrently, but the colonization was the most talked about by the press. The fact they even worked together was a mystery, an oddity, and a blessing.

Seven people were randomly selected from many thousands of volunteers to start the colonization of the moon and prepare it for more people, one for each of the seven megacorporations. This is their story. This is YOUR story, as one of these seven colonists.

One person of your choosing has been generously compensated for your loss, but there is no need for currency where you're going, unless the other colonists create the need. Who knows what kind of people have been selected? The lottery was supposedly random, after all, and it was pretty clear no one was being filtered out, according to all major media outlets.

You will have access to food, water, shelter (in the form of a single room containing a bed and a high-end computer terminal with (monitored) internet access), clothing, tools, plants (including a large hydroponic garden if you wish to grow food), basic gym equipment, and other necessities, and shipments of more resources (food, personal hygiene, etc) - and occasionally new colonists! - come once a month - you can request specific items at the requisitions terminal in the Common Room.

Additionally, you have access to Lunar Mobility Platforms (LMPs, or colloquially called "Power Armor") to move around on the lunar surface outside the colonial station. While wearing these heavy, powered suits, you can move without risk of jumping too high. They also protect against the elements better than traditional space suits, and contain oxygen tanks with 6 hours of oxygen, which can be filled at any of the airlocks, where they also recharge.

What's important is that you make this colonial station sustainable for the 200 people it can currently hold. It will eventually be expanded, after all.
Colonial StationThe currently unnamed colonial station located within the Sea of Tranquility is set up for easy access to everything. It consists of an apartment-like building that burrows several stories beneath the lunar surface, with a central courtyard (full of plants) on each level, attached to the very large, open Common Room. From there, one can access:

> the science lab and attached med bay
> a large scale hydroponic garden room (with nothing growing)
> a room set up to be an interfaith chapel
> the kitchen and oversized larder (currently filled only with assorted rations)
> the recreation center (complete with a pool and gym equipment specially made for the lunar gravity)
> the library, and
> several currently unused rooms that can be set up through requisitions if necessary.

There are a small handful of airlocks throughout the station that lead outside, and all rooms can be individually seperated from the others in the event of a catastrophe.

The overall layout from above is rectangular with many circular rooms of various sizes coming off of the common room. Additionally, above the Common Room, accessible via stairway, is a large, dome-shaped observatory, with a constant view of Earth and its phases.
RPG Rules
 
 
DramaPlayers are expected and encouraged to create drama amongst each other (there's not much else to do, after all), and most importantly, find reasons to roll the dice! Come up with risky maneuvers and potentially make even bigger problems! But players are also expected to work together; they all (theoretically) want this to be a successful colony by the time more people arrive, and are setting it up to be as sustainable as possible.

There are no assigned roles within the colony initially, and you have never met each other prior to entering the spacecraft (but you will have 3 days to get to know each other on the way up). It is up to the colonists to decide whose skills matter most in a situation. Someone with high Psyche and the Medicine (Psyche) skill is probably best suited to be a doctor, after all.

This is a mostly GM-less RP - The GM designs the colonial station (optionally naming it) and introduces any necessary plot developments in the initial stages, is the arbiter of any disputes with the rules, and can introduce complications at any time (granting 1 experience point as usual to the receiver, who cannot be the GM themselves (though they do get 1 experience point as normal for a major complication)), but is otherwise like any other player (including having a character if they so choose). The GM need not be the same person throughout the drama, either; anyone willing can ask for the role.
ApplicationName.
3 hobbies. Examples include video gaming, knitting, meditation, working out, listening to music, or a martial art.
3 attributes: Soma (physical), Pneuma (mental), and Psyche (social). They start at 20, and you gain 75 points with which to raise them (1 for 1), but no score can exceed 90.
3 skills. These can be for the same or different attributes.
Biography, including faith, motivations (especially why they volunteered to be a colonist), the megacorporation (fictional or real) that randomly selected you, and orientation, and possibly including gender identity if it differs from assigned gender.
Appearance, including ethnicity, age (16+), and assigned gender.
Personal items that must be able to fit into a 1' cube locker and could go through airport security without issue.
ExpectationsPosting Rate: 1 or 2 posts per week.

I will be selecting six characters for this RP. You can have multiple characters (and let's be realistic, as this is a homebrew RPG, I expect we'll need them so there will be seven colonists).

Make sure to read the game rules!

No rolling in this thread (not that you would have a need to).

It'll mostly be up to the colonists. Complications are intended to bring plot. But the GM, whoever that may be at any time, can stir up a bit of plot, too, since whoever it happens to be can add complications as they see fit.

But it depends what we end up with character-wise for me, as current GM, whether we have an easy-to-make plot.

Keep in mind, complications can be things beyond character drama. Major complications, especially, since they affect the whole colony. They range from unexpected jealousy to First Contact with aliens, after all.

Edit: Also, as a note, since it's set in the Real World (tm), we can totally play other RPGs in it. Just a thought.

Edit 2: I also left tech progression (other than LMPs) deliberately vague. If you're selected, tech you mention is canon (whether it's on the moon is another thing).

Okay, here's what I have currently. I think I've done the initial stats correctly based on the rules write-up. Might tinker with it over the next couple of days.

Name: Lumi Novak (She/her)

Hobbies: Listening to music (mostly metal), swimming, fossicking

Appearance: Lumi might be Slavic by family name, but her appearance is more Mediterranean from her Maltese mother's side. She is late 20s, with tanned skin and thick, wavy hair she tends to keep short and only moderately maintained. She's fit but not overly muscular.

Background: Lumi was born in Ukraine, but has led a life on the move. Her mother was a geologist and part of a team studying the effects of urban development on the environment in Eastern Europe - an endeavour which ultimately fell apart due to funding becoming unavailable. Lumi grew up influenced by her mother's bitterness over the collapsing balance between humanity and nature, and has inherited a love for geology, although her education remained incomplete. Lumi was a delinquent in her youth, with escalating rebelliousness which spiked when her mother died unexpectedly from an aneurysm. She left home as a teenager following a bitter fallout with her father.

Eventually Lumi fell in with a deep-sea surveyor outfit, who took her on-board off-the-books as a deckhand on several trips. She settled in well, and even earned herself a regular spot monitoring the comms and radar, and her affable but fiery personality earned respect and friendship among the other surveyors. She took lovers frequently, mostly men but occasionally experimented with women - but these flings never lasted long, Lumi being distrustful of relationships to the point of self-sabotage.

Her name was put into the volunteer pool for lunar colonisation by her then-lover without her knowledge, and she immediately broke up with him when she found out, but didn't bother to retract her name, reasoning there was no way she'd be picked. Lumi initially had mixed feelings when she was indeed selected by the megacorporation Huxley Holdings as their candidate - especially since it may have been Huxley's lobbying that choked resources for her mother's research team. Eventually she accepted, reasoning that a lunar colony may be able to operate with some maverick independence once the foundations are established and basic amenities secured. It could be both a great adventure and a place of 'freedom'. The compensation was sent to her father - even though they still haven't spoken since the night she left.

Personal effects: Printed notes on the moon's geological data (already dog-eared with highlighted text), photo of her parents, her mother's old hand shovel, thumbnail drive full of years' worth of downloaded music.

This is an old Star Trek character of mine that I’ve modified so it might need further modification.

Timothy Treadwell

Appearance: Timothy is of british decent and has a rather pasty pale white complexion. He is of average height for a man and lightly built. While not athletic in the traditional sense years of working with sometimes heavy pieces of machinery has at least left the young man fairly fit and while not obvious he does posses some musculature.

Timothy is somewhat of a neat freak at heart which has led to the young man keeping his dark brown hair short and constantly neatly gelled in to place. His clothes are also always kept in a pristine condition and his shoes kept at a constant shine. Timothy has a preference for wearing smart clothes and wherever possible wears a suit. His idea of dressing down is wearing a smart shirt and trousers. His ensemble is usually finished off by a pair of dark rimmed glasses that Timothy has a habit of constantly adjusting.

Personality: Timothy is socially inept and completely unsuited to dealing with normal people. Engineers and scientists he can deal with without a problem as being able to speak in 'tech speak' relaxes the young man and his speech is often filled with needlessly long words and unnecessary technical details. When having to speak 'normally' however Timothy can become easily flustered and his words can become a complete mess. Timothy is also somewhat timid and overly shy. If he is bad at dealing with men then he is absolutely diabolical at dealing with women who he finds exponentially harder to deal with.

Despite his flaws Timothy has one of the sharpest minds in a generation. His brain is always on the go and he is constantly thinking possible solutions to problems others have not even spotted yet. Ofcourse Timothy's inability to communicate well does mean that often he is the only one who knows what he is talking about.

While Timothy comes across somewhat meek and cowardly he is capable of taking actions that some might consider brave, it is just however that Timothy see's such reckless actions as last resorts and will endeavour to explore every other option before taking such an action.

Timothy is somewhat Xenophobic... well perhaps that isn't quite correct, he likes to know exactly how something works and that applies to foreign cultures aswell. If he doesn't know or understand how a people operate then he can become incredibly anxious around them. This however does not only apply to foreign cultures but also different social groups. In fact Timothy more relates with people based on their profession rather then their race or faction of origin. Timothy would much rather associate with a group of engineers of various nationalities than he would with a group of British people with differing backgrounds.

Background: Timothy was born in England in 2025 to Elizabeth and Timothy (Snr) Treadwell. Elizabeth was a software Engineer and Timothy a Technical Research Associate who met while while working for the newly formed Pan Tech Solutions (A company formed after the merger of a number large Tech companies)

The Treadwell's were so focussed on their work to the point some believed it to be an obsession while other important aspects of their life were merely overlooked. In fact when Elizabeth fell pregnant it took either of the new parents to be many months to realise.

For most of Timothy’s early life he was either homeschooled or taught by private tutors as his parents moved from place to place to work on various projects for the company. Growing up Timothy therefore did not often mix with children his own age. Timothy however did not care as he got to spend lots of time with his parents often sitting in while they worked on one project or another. The young Timothy would ofcourse attempt to emulate his parents and whenever he was not being watched closely he would end up attempting to take something apart and put it back together again or playing around with one of the computers.

Once he was old enough Timothy was sent to Eton to study (just as his father had done when he was a boy). This was a massive shock to the young boy who was used to spending the majority of his time with his parents or other responsible adults. Eton was not an easy time for the young Timothy and while he excelled academically he often found himself socially excluded by the other boys, teased or even physically bullied as the young boy was considered somewhat weird.

After graduating college Timothy enrolled at Cambridge University to study Engineering. University was again a serious adjustment for the boy, now young man. While Timothy found the engineering course he had enrolled in rather simple having been doing such things himself when he was only half his own current age that the course was now only referring to in theory, what Timothy did struggle with was interacting with people his own age. While he could hold advanced conversations on the theories of engineering with the the professors and lecturers at the University when he attempted to talk or socialise with his classmates he would freeze up or become a complete bumbling mess particularly if he was speaking to a member of the opposite gender.

Despite his awkwardness Timothy did eventually graduate at the top of his class though to the socially inept young man it felt as though it had took a lifetime.

After graduating from University Timothy immediately enrolled in the Pan Tech Solutions Advanced Apprenticeship Program. The aim of the Program was to develop future leaders in the field and it was w highly competitive and sought after program. With his keen intellect and experience Timothy was doing exceptionally well much to the chagrin of his peers who were competing for a place. Things were going well for Timothy until a freak industrial accident left the young man with a broken back. Rumours began to spread that this had in fact been no accident and was instead set up by one of Timothy’s competitors but nothing was ever proved.

The break had been rather severe and completely severed the base of Timothy’s spinal cord. He was informed by a Doctor that he would likely never walk again. Fortunately for Timothy Pan Tech Solutions gifted him with a prototype set of exoskeleton legs that they had been developing with the Paramortal Corporation. Inorder to work however these ‘exo-legs’ would need to be connected directly to Timothy’s spine.

The first time Timothy heard that he had been entered in to the lunar colonist lottery was when it was announced that he had been selected as Pan Tech’s candidate. Timothy was later informed by his father that he had been the one to put his name forward and Timothy therefore but his father’s name down as the beneficiary.

Timothy wasn’t sure how he felt about being selected as a colonist or about the going to the moon, however when he though logically about it he realised the importance of the project and knew he had to go through with it regardless of any personal feelings.

Personal Items: Top of the range personal portable computer (ie laptop or tablet), Pan Tech Glasses (think advanced google glasses), mini toolkit (a gift from his parents)

Appearance: Silas' overall appearance is deceptive, for a few reasons. He's of Northern European descent, which accounts for his height. This, paired with a mesomorphic body type tends to make him look more imposing than he actually is. He also sports a well groomed beard. This, paired with his demeanor, manner of speech, and the way he carries himself, make him generally appear far older than he actually is. In reality, he's in his thirties with a fair complexion, thick brown hair with natural blonde highlights that he keeps semi short and well groomed. He has pale green eyes, a deep yet almost soft spoken voice and an easy smile.

Background: Silas was Born into poverty to a single mother in he northern reaches of Canada. The first decade of his life was spent on welfare, but from ae early age, he had distinguished himself as different. He matured physically and mentally more quickly than his peers, perhaps in small part due to the challenging conditions of his childhood. He demonstrated a natural inclination towards academics, and his mother fed his intellect with books of all sorts, hoping that he would grow to be successful, and striving to give him the advantages she never had. He excelled in school and in the Dramatic arts, as well as in music. Athletics never interested him, which estranged him from some peers, but by his teens he was demonstrating a charisma that came surprisingly easy to him. His teachers said he was destined for a career in academics, or politics, and indeed, that is what he decided to pursue.

He graduated with degrees in History and Anthropology from Oxford University and McGill University respectively, focusing on Gender and Church studies, and was set to become a professor at the University of British Columbia. before this however, he was headhunted by the Megacorp "Tenebaum Industries" Canada's only globally competitive corporation that focused on land development. They wanted him initially to be in charge of concocting new policies that treaded the line between profit and environmental accountability, but when the opportunity to send a candidate to the first Lunar colony arrived, after some deliberation they decided to send him, partly due to his charisma, and partly because he begged for months about the opportunity to be the first historian on the moon. it also allowed his mother to be compensated which finally ensured her financial security, something he had been trying to get for her his whole life.

Personal effects: A beautifully crafted modular Violin, along with tightly packed replacement strings, wax and bow, Several books on World history, and several empty notebooks for personal and professional notes, A personal laptop, A picture of his mother, A thumbdrive with a selection of his favorite music, and his Oxford graduating class ring.
