Plot SummaryYou sit alone in your cell while staring at the wall as you serve out your triple life sentence. Three hundred years behind bars. Perhaps you are an evil monster, or maybe you’re a good person with strange circumstances. Whatever you’re in for, it doesn’t really matter. Your cell door opens unexpectedly, and a large woman enters. She looks at you with an icy stare. “My name is Hannah Harper.” She says. “Some call me hammer. Prey you never learn why. I’m here to offer you a deal. I’m putting together a team of exceptional individuals such as yourself to carry out missions too difficult for normal soldiers. Every mission you complete takes ten years off your sentence. If you think this is an opportunity for you to escape, think again. We’ll be casting a spell on you that I can activate at any time. You try to escape or disobey my orders in any way, you die, and I will be watching you at all times. What say you?"

Welcome to the suicide squad. I am looking for 6 level 5 players to take on a series of dangerous missions. After each mission you will level up.

First mission
: Mansion of Madness
A number of people have gone missing or turned up dead near the frontier village of Kardiff. A team was sent in to investigate. In their last communication, they reported finding a large manor deep in the forest. Shortly after entering, all communication was lost. Your team is to go in, investigate the mansion, rescue team one if possible, and eliminate any threats.

The world


This is a homebrew setting in the world of Forsena, a continent with six countries.

Almek kingdom: this is the county you are in on the West side of the continent. It is known for its high quality of living for its citizens, strong economy and socialist programs funded by the wealthy. It is ruled by king Lance, the youngest ruler who is rumored to be a puppet manipulated by the nobles who surround him.

Esgarn Empire: a meritocracy ruled by emperor Zemeckis, a harsh veteran warrior. It is known for its military, technology, and industry, it is considered to be the largest and most powerful county. The only reason it hasn’t conquered its neighboring nations is that it sits at the center of the continent and is surrounded by enemies.

Carleon confederacy: a communist nation ruled by Cai, a man rumored to be a wizard. the nation is ruled by fear and propaganda denouncing the capitalism of the empire. The nation is located to the south west peninsula and has a peace treaty with Almek.

Dutchy of Iscalio: Iscalio is a dictatorship ruled by mad monarch Dryst. The nation is known for its harsh, unjust laws, and high rate of poverty and unemployment. It is located on the south east peninsula

Leone theocracy: a religious state ruled by the pope Leoneese rumored to have divine healing powers, the nation is extremely conservative and fanatical. They are an isolationist nation sequestered on the east coast behind the rocky mountains. They believe in human supremacy.

Norhtgard: a democracy ruled by Vanyard, I cool headed, calculating tactician, Northgard is known for its cold climate, hardy people, and fierce warriors. Its technology isn’t very advanced, and its political system makes it difficult for anything to get done. It is located to the north of the continent.

What to expect

This is a homebrew world in a low magic setting. It exists but is very rare. Most people have never seen it. many don’t even believe it exists.

Potions do not exist.

Magic items are very rare.

Other races exist, but magical beasts and monsters are very rare and mostly unknown, and your character likely hasn’t encountered any before. Undead are also unknown. Dragons are unknown.

The existence of gods is ambiguous. Many people believe in many different gods, but no one knows for sure. A few clerics are rumored to be able to pray and cast miracles, but it is unclear if the power comes form them, or an actual god.

I will be using a lot of homebrew creatures.

The missions will be difficult.

I will roll behind a dm screen

I use theater of the mind, but if any player wants to create battle maps, I’ll allow it.

If you die, you can roll up a new character for the next mission.

The results of your missions will affect the country, and even the entire world.


Gear
: you have 2000 gold to spend on equipment, however none of it can be magical or potions. You can however buy poisons. you won’t be able to spend any money during the missions so any unspent wealth is simply gone. We will also be tracking weight, so keep that in mind.

Specialty item
: you can have on free rare magical item or make a homebrew item of equal power. It will require my approval, so don’t make anything too overpowered. This should be your signature item, something that is iconic to your character like wonder woman’s lasso, or green lanterns ring. It is the only one like it and it is part of what makes you special.

My initial thought is to make a Changeling with glamoured armor. Im thinking Rogue (soulknife?)

Changed my mind... Eloquent Bard.
Become anyone(including clothing) with a ridiculous deception/persuasion skills.
Yup thats the build now ill work on the character.

You probably heard this one before, but I'm thinking of playing a Whisper Bard. I've already thought of the concept, now trying to fill in this app.

Name: Flint The Busker
Race: Human
Class: Bard (Whisper)
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Background: Urchin
Personality traits: I think anyone who's nice to me is hiding evil intent.
I bluntly say what other people are hinting at or hiding.
Ideal: Change. The low are lifted up, and the high and mighty are brought down. Change is the nature of things.
Bond: My town or city is my home, and I'll fight to defend it.
Flaw: I'd rather kill someone in their sleep then fight fair.
Description: Flint stand at least 4'8", his build looks brittle and scrawny compared to most average man. Despite the fact that his only in his 30's, his face is covered with wrinkles due to many hardships in his life. The scar on his left eye appeared during a street fight in his youth, his left eye never recovered and is now mostly a decoration or feature at this point. His usual attire usually sports an old overcoat, it's crusty and filled with a terrible scent, almost like it's been in a gutter for centuries. He also wears a blue scarf, a hat someone made for him at one point in his life, and he carries around a well-made mandolin.

Personality: Flint is a calm man, he has experienced many things within his short life, fear, death, love, kindness and most of all, suffering. He is not a cruel or cold man, he shows kindness to those who suffer the same fate as himself or the ones that seem lost and afraid, but only to those kind of people. He is mostly distrustful and wary to anyone else. His often a jovial man despite his circumstances and has no need to lie to a friend or be secretive, often being very blunt in conversations. He does however despise those that flaunt their wealth and show cruelty to others, resorting to somewhat extreme measures when things go too far.

Backstory: Flint has, for a long time now, suffered from memory loss. Their are gaps to what he remembered and can't seem to recall much. He doesn't know where he came from, how he came to Iscalio or whether he was born from their or not, he doesn't even remember why his called Flint. However he does remember his experiences in poverty as a youth, he remembers the mad man that seats as the ruler of his home but treats his subjects as mere playthings and remembers how he gained powers to fight back. He remembered that day, he was trying to earn food through playing music or trying street performance, but all he received was beatdowns and spit in return, no copper was earned. He was broken, at the verge of starvation and death, Flint remembered how he cursed the lot he lives in. But his ire would then be directed to the monarchy, he cursed them and their authority with a great hate, it was at that point the broken man heard them. He heard whispers, not just one or two, but thousands of them, all whispering different words but all those words were laced with the same feeling. The same feeling his been spouting about to their ruler, they shared a feeling of animosity. These voices, Flint surmised they were the spirits of those that suffered under the Monarchy's iron grip, they fixed his body and transformed his instrument, a mandolin, into a conduit of great power, the voices. This was a day the Dutchy of Iscalio met there scourge, throughout an entire year many affiliates to the mad monarch were killed through mysterious circumstances. The public dubbed this killer as The Whisperer, cause accompanied with his killings, their were always whispers out and about that eyewitnesses heard. Flint hid with the poor, they were in full support with Flint, they saw it as a way to rebel against their oppressor, and he wreaked havoc using the voice's power. Eventually someone either was forced to or bribed to rat him out, and he was caught by the authorities. It was miraculous he was given a triple life sentence, either the monarch was truly mad or this was another tactic to demoralize the poor. Either way, that's all Flint remembers up to now and so he bides his time, he can still hear the voices. They still call him even without his mandolin, they seek that monarch's head and Flint desires the same result, but he knows restraint and waits for the opportune time to be let out once again.

This sounds very interesting! 2 questions:
1) If it's a low magic setting, does that limit our choice of caster classes at all?
2) Since Eberron is an accepted source but TCoE is not, does that mean we must use Eberron's verbiage for Artificer and can't use the Armorer subclass?

Bond I'll never forget the crushing defeats my company suffered under bad leadership. I'll fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.
Flaw I have little respect for anyone in the military who is not a proven warrior.
I made a terrible mistake in battle that cost many lives—and I would do anything to keep that mistake secret.
I’d rather eat my armor than admit when I’m wrong.

Description: Medium height for female human. Light eyes, dark hair. Sharp facial features. Ambitious and intense. Comfortable in heavy armor, strong, lean but muscular, fast, and intelligent. Clear headed. Efficient.

Personality: Originally a very positive person with a reasonable outlook on life who wanted to do well. She wanted to restore her family name. But, under a superior who she knew came from a family that harbored a huge grudge against her own, and who used his authority to try to eliminate her, she broke bad. At the present, jaded and more than ready to go...somewhere else.

Backstory:
Background: Soldier: You have a military rank from your career as a soldier. Soldiers loyal to your former military organization still recognize your authority and influence, and they defer to you if they are of a lower rank. You can invoke your rank to exert influence over other soldiers and requisition simple equipment or horses for temporary use. You can also usually gain access to friendly military encampments and fortresses where your rank is recognized.

 


Gear: plate armor @1500, shield @ 10, longsword @15, crossbow @50, longbow @50, starting equipment backpack with the bedroll, mess kit, torches, tinderbox, water canteen, rope, set of playing cards.

Specialty Item: Ring of Spell Storing. This ring is heirloom with a big story behind it. Her ancestral family, a few generations back, were called out as traitors and lost all their lands and holdings. However, this ring is an heirloom from her mothers side and not part of the records of the grand estate and holdings which was seized - and she is just about the last of her family on both sides. The ring and a little bit of money was left to her directly, held for her until after all of the family estate was seized and settled. The money went toward special equipment, such as her armor and shield, her horse, a squire, her sword, crossbow, longbow, saddle, rainy day fund. She kept the ring and has recently deduced what it does.

Personality traits: Flattery is my preferred trick for getting what I want. I am always calm, no matter what the situation. I never raise my voice or let my emotions control me
Ideal: Darkness is not evil
Bond: No one else is going to have to endure the hardships I've been through
Flaw: I will never fully trust anyone other than myself

Description: Long black hair and brown eyes. She stands 5' 9" and is lithe and limber from years of training and practice in her cell. She still has a noble grace to her movements and her voice has a certain nobility and lyrical quality that makes what she says sound so very tempting.

Personality: Tenebria is darkness personified. Sultry, seductive, and prepared to kill without a second of hesitation. She is perfectly reasonable in conversation, entirely friendly and understanding, she seems the perfect confidant and is more than willing to listen to your darkest of desires and perhaps make a pretense that those desires might come true. She is the person anyone would pick for a friend and that is the last mistake they might ever make.

Backstory: Born into a noble family Tenebria knew only wealth, excess, and joy as a young child. Though she could have been spoiled her parents taught her about helping others, being a good citizen, and more. She learned those lessons well: she would give alms to the poor, help charities, and more. Perhaps the world would be a better place had things stayed that way, but it was not to be. There was an attack on her noble estate. Tenebria watched as her parents and brothers were tortured and killed. She tried to flee through secret tunnels with her ladies maids, sisters, and friends, but they were taken prisoner.

She and the others endured all forms of torment and suffering. She had lost everything in her life and was staring into the abyss prepared to take her own life when she heard the siren's call of darkness. She found a black onyx medallion and within it she gazed into the depths of the abyss and they responded. A long forgotten goddess of darkness called to her giving her the option to serve her. Tenebria harkened unto the words in the shadows and with the power of the dark goddess Tenebria killed every single one of her captors. Ever since she has been devoted to the Dark Goddess.

From then on she continued her crusade. In the light she seemed the same noble born woman, but in the darkness blood drenched the streets from all of those she killed and while most of the deaths were bandits, murderers and the like, others seemed to simply be nobility or the rich. She was a dark vigilante with a code that seemed entirely unreasonable and unable to be understood. She was caught and tried, put in jail for all the people she had killed.

Personality Trait: I honor my deities through practices that are foreign to this land.
Ideal: Suspicious. I must be careful, for I have no way of telling friend from foe here.
Bond: I'm fascinated by the beauty and wonder if this new land.
Flaw: I pretend not to understand the local language in order to avoid interactions I would rather not have.
Description: He stands at 5'8, slender, wiry and athletic build. His skin is obsidian with various shades of blue and his eyes a pale shade of silver, matching his pure silver hair. He wears a colorful robe made of cotton and silk, of mostly red with silver embroidery and elastic leg bindings that is common among the monks.

Personality: A Quiet man but with piercing eyes. Quick to action when needed, sees no need for using unnecessary energy. While does work with others in a group, his trusts in them or anyone, is low. He knew life would be hard on the surface, he been taught that, but it's been much harder than anticipated. So he just takes things day by day.

Backstory: When he was young (well, young for an elf), part of his family had split. A few had met up with a few other drows and headed to the surface to stay. At first, he didn’t mind, the females were in charge, and he would have freedom to be his own person. They followed the goddess Eilistraee. Out of all the drow deities, Eilistraee was the one god that Loth had tried to keep hidden. If Loth was afraid of her, then Eilistraee couldn’t be a bad god to follow. So up they went.

He was told it would not be an easy adjustment. Even though he was told what could and would happen, he still thought it was an understatement. You think his people would be given a chance, but his people were well known for their evilness that most would not take a chance to trust them or at least give them the benefit of a doubt.

Key word was most. While the humans wouldn’t accept them, the drow headed to the woods, knowing their surface cousins lived in them. When they did find them, the wood elves quickly chased them out. They had heard of Eilistraee, but they needed the drow to prove themselves first. The high elves were of the same mind, but a few had accepted them, and they escorted the drow on a trip that took a few days and nights. There they found an area with only two villages and a monastery. They began to work the land and with the help of the few high elves, they became good farmers and the villagers eventually found out about them a few months later.

It was a good thing that the high elves that came with the drow stayed with them, for the humans in the two villages had mixed reactions. Some were deathly afraid, a few tolerated them, figuring they were actually living on the surface and farming, then perhaps they were the rare good ones. However, you also had a few that tried to make trouble. If the high elves weren’t there, there would have been huge trouble. In the deep of the nearby forest, wood elves had been watching them very closely. It was after a whole year when they finally accepted the drow.

The drow were told of life and culture of the surface. There were probably more magic back in their underground then there were on the surface. Plus, the humans didn’t either believe or know about many of the gods. A few centuries ago, something had happened that even the clerics were rare.

Time went on and as with any family, not all wanted to do the same thing, which was farming, some, like Varis, were bored of it and began to get bored with life in general. Some had tried to tell others about their goddess Eilistraee, but most wanted nothing to do with it and a few laughed, thinking it was all made up. A few, including Varis took a trip to the monastery for the first time. It was about two miles away. When they arrived, they were surprised that not only had they heard of Eilistraee, but also of other gods, but since people thinking the god were either a myth or no longer around. They had a very large library where they could learn of history, places, people, and areas of the world.

Varis had watched some monks doing hand to hand combat and was amazed by what they did. He immediately wanted to join. Surprisingly, he was welcomed in open arms. Besides fighting, learning proper defense, doing studies, they also meditated, it helped the soul they said, soothing the nerves and helped on stay calm and relaxed in everything they do. Varis had some build in anger from the way his people had been treated. Sure, it had gotten better, but there always been travelers and there were still a few troublemakers. The high elves were ready to head back home. The monks, knowing the hardship the drow had gone through and probably had more hardship in the future were ready to help.

Turns out the monastery was very well respected in the area and not many were willing to mess with them. Varis had spent some years there, learning all he can of the surface world and how to fight. While the mediation has helped, it didn’t help ease his anger fully, the workout though helped with the rest. He had gone on trips and a few adventures as time gone on. Some were very successful, some were not so much and a few ere nightmares. He was always glad to get back at the monastery, it was peaceful there. Back home, a few had made a living being farmers, a few had gone out into the world doing various things. Varis was doing so well, that he was given a gift at the monastery, a pair of Bracers of Defense. Since monks wear no armor, the gift was precious.

Many years had gone by and at least once a year, all the drows that had gone to the surface had gotten together, to celebrate the anniversary of leaving the underdark and coming to the surface. One year, one of Varis’s cousin did not show up. There was some concern, but when the following year came and went without him, they then expected the worst. Eight of them had gone out the year after that. They left in pairs. Two headed north, two headed south, two headed east, and the last two headed west. Varis and another cousin had gone west.

It was a few months when the two got a clue of cousin. A traveler the had come across saw them and warned them of a town they were headed. They had killed a drow, even though the drow was innocent. The drow thanked the human for his information, which he didn’t have to say anything. The drow needed to go to town anyway because their supplies were low and the next nearest town was too far for their supplies to last. So, they decided to chance it, figuring two of them would be safer than one.

They entered town with their hood up, gone into the shop to get supplies. Strangers, but Varis, wearing his monk outfit, people didn’t pay much mind, some thought monks were strange but capable fighters. Being close to the shopkeeper though, they couldn’t hide everything. With gloves on, the only thing that was not completely covered was their face. Even with the hood over the face, the keeper thought something was different. When the walked out, Varis used the drow cant to warn his young cousin to get to the horse quickly. They were loaded when Varis was about to get on his horse when the keeper came and pulled his hood, revealing the drow.

They tried to keep calm, but it did no good. The town sheriff came to see what was going on and his eyes bulged at the drow. He waved to his men and Varis quickly picked up a stick and hit his cousin’s horse in the rump, setting the creature off and running. The men came at him, and the sheriff yelled that he would do to him what he did to the last drow that came into town. All this time, Varis had tried to keep his cool, but when the sheriff started calling him all kinds of things, the drow had enough and fought back, all was fine at first, no one was really hurt, even though they were trying to kill him. It was when he threw a chop at the sheriff, aiming for the chest but the man leaned down to grab him and instead of hitting the human in the chest, Varis got him in the throat and the sheriff staggered for a few moments and fell. Varis quickly got on his horse and took off, but arrows took down the horse, the were not going to let him escape and when a shout rang out that the sheriff was dead, they were quickly on him. The drow fought them off the best he could, but it seemed like the whole down was ganging up on him. Tow them rushed to take him down and once he hit the ground, he managed to get free, but he only got half way up when he felt a blow to his head and all went black.

He woke up in the cell all bruised and bloodied, they had beaten him while he was unconscious. He was then transported out of town. The only bright side was he heard them from a distance that the other drow was long gone and lost track of him. His family and friends will find out now what happened, not only to him but to his other cousin.

Alignment: Neutral Evil. It's complicated; he's always been an outsider and a nihilist and now he's rooting for an ecological catastrophe BUT he can't cast Gate himself. He needs friends to help him find a wizard who can. So he's got strict rules about teammates.

Description 5’5” tall, 170 pounds, mauve skin with white hair, blue on blue eyes. Muttonchop sideburns. Wears black and green vestments and turban over a dark robe and desert boots.

Personality Trustworthy to his allies, devious with everyone else, downright treacherous to foes. “Mad, bad, and dangerous to know”. Sort of evil like a mafia member who has few social skills and few curbs on his behavior, but willing to cooperate with a team. Favors swordplay over sorcery but doesn’t let that stop him if the odds are wrong.

Backstory: Xanapal was orphaned by adventurers and left to be raised in a college by mundane sages in the Duchy of Iscalio. Because of his eyesight he was given the odd chores of the astronomer’s observatory. Day soon became night for this odd scholar, and he was given over to reading old books and charting horoscopes by archaic methods.

One day, after drawing up a convoluted horoscope involving several Forbidden Stars, he tranced and had a vision of the Dark Angel of Shai-Hulud, an efreeti paladin in the god's service.



Shai-Hulud is an alien god who rampages on the planet Arrakis, and he hungers for new worlds. On behalf of Shai-Hulud, the Dark Angel offered Xanapal magical powers in exchange for a service: to find a wizard who can open a Gate for Shai-Hulud to leave Arrakis. Xanapal agreed, and woke to find a rapier with a ruby pommel at his feet. It serves him as an arcane focus.

Sadly for Xanapal, he proved entirely naive about how to go about finding an interdimensional wizard. His college kicked him out. He took to joining murder-hobo dungeon-crawlers, and became the sort of sordid adventurer who orphaned him in the old days.

The Dark Angel of Shai-Hulud has returned to Xanapal several times, each time in a trance, and left him with tools to assist him in his quest. Xanapal has a Book of Shadows with rituals inscribed inside. He has priestly vestments of green and black cotton and a loop of wooden prayer beads. He has a nine-string baliset for droning hymns to Shai-Hulud. He has the power to perform religious ceremonies in the name of Shai-Hulud, and has summoned a tarantula familiar to himself named Escobar.

Xanapal's travels took him to the kingdom of Almek, where eventually he got arrested for conspiracy and treason against the Almek State, for calling for an alien menace to invade through a forbidden arcane Gate.

Specialty item: Ruby of the War Mage on the pommel of his rapier.
